Biopic on Pakistani queer anchor, former ‘Bigg Boss’ contestant Begum Nawazish Ali in works

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A new biopic based on Pakistani queer television personality Ali Saleem is in the works. Ali is a Pakistani television host, actor, scriptwriter and impressionist who broke into the mainstream audiences through his impersonations of late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and went on to play the cross-dressing Begum Nawazish Ali on various television channels.

Ali, who was biologically born a male to a retired colonel father in Pakistan Army, has sometimes called himself gay, bisexual or at other times even a transsexual. He was also a contestant in ‘Bigg Boss 4’ back in 2010.

Deepak Pandey, CEO of EORTV, who has announced a biopic, has expressed his desire to cast Mallika Sherawat for the part.

He said, “This is a strong story, a story of boldness and courage. The character is multifaceted and needed someone as courageous and undaunted as the Begum thyself. I am planning to approach Mallika Sherawat for this role as she would be apt for a fearless performance like this. It is important to create stories like these that can encourage more and more people to be open about their sexuality and sexual preferences. This is going to be a story of an unapologetically fearless man who’s leading a life of his own choice in spite of living in a politically warm environment”.

He further mentioned, “Begum Nawazish Ali’s background and childhood is interesting but the journey he makes in due course of his life is even more interesting. He has interviewed the who’s who from business, politics, entertainment with gusto. He has courted satire and controversy but managed to make a place in the hearts of the common man. His life will make for very compelling content on screen”.

EORTV works to build awareness among the society towards the Queer community and educate people about them. The platform showcases queer stories on screen with an aim to normalise it within mainstream society.

  • Pakistani court grants Imran Khan protective bail in 8 terrorism cases, one civil case

Pakistani court grants Imran Khan protective bail in 8 terrorism cases, one civil case

    [ad_1]

Lahore: In a relief to embattled Imran Khan, a top Pakistani court here granted protective bail to the former prime minister on Friday in eight terrorism cases and a civil case after he appeared before the court, hours after another court suspended non-bailable arrest warrants against him till March 18 in a corruption case.

Khan, the 70-year-old chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, travelled to the Lahore High Court (LHC) in a bulletproof vehicle to seek protective bail in nine cases.

A two-member bench of the LHC, comprising Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh and Justice Farooq Haider conducted the hearing on bail pleas filed against the cases that are lodged under terrorism sections, according to Geo TV.

For the five cases in Islamabad, the court granted bail to the PTI chief till March 24 and for the three cases in Lahore, Khan received bail till March 27, the report said.

Meanwhile, Justice Saleem also heard the bail pleas that Khan filed against the civil case registered against him, it said.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court suspended non-bailable arrest warrants issued against Khan till March 18, providing him with a chance to appear before the district court hearing the Toshakhana case.

Ahead of the LHC decision, a tense calm prevailed in Lahore’s upscale Zaman Park near Khan’s residence, which was the scene of pitched battles for two days between his defiant supporters and Punjab Police.

The clashes ultimately subsided after the courts intervened on Wednesday.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana, and selling them for profit.

Established in 1974, the Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries.

Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan in October last year for not sharing details of the sales.

The election body later filed a complaint with the district court to punish him, under criminal laws, for selling the gifts he had received as prime minister of the country.

Khan has vehemently denied those charges.

According to Khan, he was facing over 80 different cases in various courts across Pakistan.

Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician, was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China, and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has been asking for early elections to remove what he termed an “imported government” led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

  • Video of Pakistani dad schooling reporter on ‘purpose’ of Aurat march goes viral

Video of Pakistani dad schooling reporter on ‘purpose’ of Aurat march goes viral

    [ad_1]

The Aurat March is an annual event held by women across Pakistan on International Women’s Day to express their concerns and celebrate womanhood. A video of a Pakistani father educating a reporter about the ‘purpose’ of the march went viral as netizens praised his progressive mindset.

A Pakistani woman named Leena Ghani shared the video of her father debating the man with the mic about the Aurat March.

Leena’s father was seen in the first video responding to a reporter’s query about the ‘reason’ for the “Aurat March” and advising the man to do his research properly.

The man continued by saying that, aside from legislation prohibiting sexual harassment, most laws discriminate against women, and they feel overlooked in several sectors.

“Women’s voices are underrepresented anyplace you go, including in courts of law. If you’re unsure, send a lady by herself to the police station or court, the man said, advising the reporter to learn more about gender studies.

The video garnered 333K views and 2810 likes by the time of publishing this article.

Leena further added that it’s a privilege in Pakistan to have a supportive father. “It breaks my heart that so many women don’t have that. I wish that for every girl, every young adult, and every woman,” Leena wrote.

    What is Aurat March

Aurat Azadi March is held annually in different cities of Pakistan such as Lahore, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta, Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar on the occasion of International Women’s Day to fight for women’s rights. The first Aurat March was held in Karachi in 2018, and subsequently in Lahore and Karachi the following year,

  • Moody’s downgrades long-deposit ratings of five Pakistani banks

Moody’s downgrades long-deposit ratings of five Pakistani banks

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded the long-term deposit ratings of five Pakistani banks to Caa3 from Caa1, The Express Tribune reported. The ratings of Moody’s Investors Service suggest that the ongoing economic crisis in Pakistan is likely to have an adverse trickle-down impact on banks.

The inflation readings are at a historical high of 31.5 per cent in January and the central bank’s benchmark policy rate at a record high of 20 per cent has weakened the borrowers’ capacity to repay loans taken from banks, as per the news report.

Financial institutions might witness a large proportion of borrowers defaulting on repayment, which will lead to an increase in non-performing loans (NPLs) and bad loans, likely to affect the earnings of banks and deteriorate the quality of their assets.

Pakistan’s cash-strapped government stands to be the single largest borrower, having taken 85 per cent of total deposits in loans. Meanwhile, other borrowers comprise businesses and households, as per the news report.

According to Moody’s Investors Service, the five banks to be downgraded on deposit rating include Allied Bank Limited (ABL), Habib Bank Ltd (HBL), MCB Bank Limited (MCB), National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Ltd (UBL).

In addition to downgrading their long-term deposit ratings, the global ratings agency has also downgraded the five banks’ long-term foreign currency Counterparty Risk Ratings (CRRs) to Caa3 from Caa1, according to The Express Tribune report.

Furthermore, Moody’s has lowered the banks’ Baseline Credit Assessments (BCAs) to Caa3 from Caa1, and as a result, also downgraded their local currency long-term CRRs to Caa2 from B3 and their long-term Counterparty Risk Assessments to Caa2(cr) from B3(cr).

The global rating agency said that the downgrading of banks comes after its decision to downgrade the Pakistan government’s credit rating to Caa3 from Caa1, all of which reflect that default is imminent. However, Moody’s has changed the outlook from negative to stable earlier this week.

The downgrading of the banks by Moody’s demonstrates the weakening operational environment in Pakistan, as showcased by Moody’s lowering of its Macro Profile for Pakistan to “Very Weak” from “Very Weak+,” and the high interlinkages between the sovereign’s weakened creditworthiness and the banks’ balance sheets, as per the news report.

It further said, “The deterioration in Pakistan’s operating environment reflects both the rising government liquidity and external vulnerability risks, with foreign exchange reserves declining to critically low levels, as well as the high costs of living with headline inflation likely to rise further as energy prices increase in tandem with the removal of energy subsidies,” The Express Tribune reported.

Moody’s noted that these factors along with high-interest rates will dampen consumer confidence and compromise borrowers repayment capacity. Moreover, these factors will create additional pressure on banks’ earnings, asset quality, and capital metrics, and also potentially affect their financial stability.

  • Pakistani girl who was arrested for illegally staying in India returns home, says family

Pakistani girl who was arrested for illegally staying in India returns home, says family

    [ad_1]

Karachi: A minor Pakistani girl who went missing from her home in Hyderabad city in the southern Sindh province last September and was arrested from Bengaluru in January has returned back, her family said on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as Iqra Jeevani, entered India in September through the porous India-Nepal border. She married a 25-year-old security guard from Uttar Pradesh, whom she met through a gaming app.

The girl’s father, Sohail Jeewani, said they had already gone through a lot of pain and embarrassment and just wanted to move on.

“I don’t want her or anyone else in my family to speak on this issue. What has happened has happened. Yes I confirm she has been returned to us and we are leaving from Lahore tonight,” Sohail told PTI over phone before hanging up.

The girl’s case has garnered a lot of attention in both countries after she was recovered by the Indian authorities in January in Bengaluru.

Iqra, who is 16 years of age, left her home in Shahi Bazar in Hyderabad for her college – Federal Government Girls College – on September 19, 2022 and was found four months later in Bengaluru when police arrested a young boy she was living with.

It transpired she had developed a friendship and then relationship with the Indian man, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and apparently married him.

“She had called us from India in early January to inform us she was safe and married to this Indian man,” her uncle Afzal Jeewani said.

A senior police official said the family informed them about the call and they got in touch through required channels with the Pakistan foreign office who then contacted their Indian counterparts to help find and recover the girl.

A few days after her contact, she was arrested along with her purported husband.

Afzal claimed that the Indian man had deceived his niece by posing as a Muslim boy when the two met on social media while playing online Ludo games.

According to reports, Bengaluru police arrested Yadav, accusing him of bringing a Pakistani girl to India after befriending her.

Iqra was subsequently handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office officials, who later remanded her to a state home for women.

She was handed over to the Pakistani authorities on Sunday at the Wagah border.

  • Pakistani PM calls for national unity after terror attack in Peshawar

Pakistani PM calls for national unity after terror attack in Peshawar

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: In the wake of the recent suicide bombing in Pakistan’s Peshawar city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called for national unity to fight the menace of terrorism.

Chairing the Apex Committee meeting in Peshawar, convened after the attack on a mosque in the city that killed over 100 people, Sharif said that all the stakeholders should work together against terrorism, Xinhua reported.

“It is the need of the hour that provinces and the center along with the leaderships of political parties take ownership and shun their differences … We should unite and tackle this (terrorism),” the prime minister said.

He said that KP province recently witnessed a fresh spate of terror incidents, and therefore needed capacity-building in its security departments, adding that maximum support will be provided to the counter-terrorism department of KP police to strengthen its capabilities to combat terrorism.

“In the recent attack in Peshawar, the terrorist managed to breach the security check post and reach the mosque. We should not feel hesitant in admitting the facts and faults … The occurrence of the incident due to security lapses will be probed,” Sharif said, as reported by Xinhua.

“A full-fledged investigation has been launched into the suicide attack, and the culprits behind the terrorist incident would be taken to task soon,” he added.

The prime minister said that military operations in the past have successfully wiped out terrorism from the country, vowing the Pakistani government would collectively overcome the on-going challenge as well.

“Many people have lost their lives confronting terror. Our police and armed forces gave huge sacrifices. Our citizens were on the frontline. Their sacrifices would not be wasted,” he said.

On Monday, a powerful blast ripped through a crowded mosque in Peshawar, killing at least 100 worshippers and wounding more than 200 others.

Pakistani police said they have found a network of terrorists behind the deadly suicide bombing.

  • Pakistani rupee plunges to historic low

Pakistani rupee plunges to historic low

    [ad_1]

Karachi: The Pakistani rupee resumed its downwards slide on Thursday after two modest sessions as the “optimism surrounding the government and IMF talks scaled back”, local media reported.

The Pakistani rupee depreciated by Rs 2.52 to settle at Rs 271.35 at the close of the day. However, the local currency touched 272.17 against the dollar during intra-day trade, Geo News reported.

The rupee had closed at Rs 268.83 on Wednesday.

Since the start of this year, the rupee has depreciated by 44.92, Geo News reported.

Capital market expert Saad Ali said that reports regarding the rejection of the circular debt management plan (CDMP) presented by the government to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had dented the market’s confidence.

Ali said that these reports created doubts about the possibility of a bottleneck in the ongoing government-IMF talks, Geo News reported.

An IMF mission is currently in Pakistan holding talks on the ninth review that will continue till February 9 after which a staff-level agreement is expected between the two sides.

The IMF has rejected the CDMP presented by the government and asked the authorities to raise the electricity tariff by Rs 12.50 per unit in order to restrict the additional subsidy at Rs 335 billion for the current fiscal year.

During the second day of technical-level talks, the Washington-based lender termed the revised CDMP as “unrealistic”, which is based on certain wrong assumptions. So the government will have to bring more changes in its policy prescription to restrict the losses of the cash-bleeding power sector.

The IMF and the Finance Ministry will work out a gap on the fiscal front after which different additional taxation measures will be finalised through the upcoming mini-budget.

The revised CDMP envisages an increase in the monster of circular debt to the tune of Rs 952 billion for the current fiscal year against an earlier projection of Rs 1,526 billion, Geo News reported.
