Amaravati: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh has temporarily suspended his ongoing padyatra in view of the passing away of his cousin and actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna.

Lokesh, whose ‘Yuva Galam’ padyatra was passing through Srikalahasti constituency in Chittoor district, stopped the foot march on learning about Taraka Ratna’s death on Saturday night and left for Hyderabad.

Lokesh, son of TDP president and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday paid their last respects to Taraka Ratna at the latter’s house at Mokila in Rangaeddy district near Hyderabad. He was accompanied by his wife Brahmini.

The actor had collapsed due to massive cardiac arrest during Lokesh’s padyatra in Kuppam constituency on January 27.

He was first taken to a local hospital and was later shifted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bengaluru, where he succumbed after battling for life for 23 days.

Taraka Ratna’s last rites are to be performed in Hyderabad on Monday.

Lokesh may resume the padyatra on Tuesday.

Tension during Lokesh’s padyatra in Chittoor district

Amaravati: There was mild tension during Telugu Desam Party (TDP) General Secretary Nara Lokesh’s padyatra in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district when a police official tried to snatch mike from him, citing the ban on public meetings on roads.

The incident took place at NTR Crossroads in NR Peta when Lokesh was addressing participants in the padyatra. Police asked him to stop saying there is no permission for meetings on roads. They cited Government Order (GO) number one issued last month prohibiting public meetings on roads.

As the TDP leader continued his speech, a police officer tried to snatch the mike from his hands. This led to mild tension. The opposition party alleged that the police were creating hurdles for the padyatra at every place.

Lokesh, son of TDP President and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, continued his padyatra ‘Yuva Galam’ on the 13th day.

The local farmers at Krishnapuram in Chittoor Assembly segment met Lokesh, and he told them as Chandrababu Naidu comes from a farmer’s family, he has thorough knowledge about the problems being faced by the farming community.

Recalling that Chandrababu Naidu, as the Chief Minister, was holding repeated review meetings with the then Agriculture Minister, Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, he felt that agriculture is now remunerative now. “Chandrababu Naidu encouraged agriculture and allied sectors on a massive scale but now the Chief Minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy, who came to power by making several promises to the farmers, did not fulfil even a single one,” he said.

He alleged that the Chief Minister is harassing the farmers by installing meters to motor pump-sets due to which the farming sector is in deep crisis now.

Stating that farmers never resorted to suicides due to harassment by the government during the Chandrababu Naidu regime, Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh is now in the third position the country in farmers’ suicides. “I am assuring you all that whenever the TDP government is formed again all your problems will be resolved on a war-footing basis,” he told the farmers.

Cold-storage plants will be set up and crop insurance will be revived and the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme that is withdrawn now too will be reintroduced, Lokesh said. “The basic problem now is that neither the Chief Minister nor the Minister for Agriculture has any knowledge about agriculture,” he remarked.

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President, A. Revanth Reddy, on Monday launched Haath Se Haath Jodo padyatra in the state to take Rahul Gandhi’s message of Bharat Jodo Yatra to people.

The padyatra is also aimed at highlighting the failures of the Central and the state governments.

Revanth Reddy launched the foot-march in Mulugu district after offering prayers to tribal deities Sammakka and Saralamma.

He along with local Congress MLA Seethakka and hundreds of party workers participated in the walkathon for six kilometers on the first day.

Addressing the participants, Reddy said he would work the spirit of tribal warriors Sammakka and Saralamma to fight and end autocratic and feudal rule in the state.

Reddy, who is also a Member of Parliament, later tweeted that the first day of the padyatra was a huge success. “We will continue to take the message of our leader Rahul Gandhi Ji to every nook and corner of the state,” he said.

Reddy would walk 20 to 25 km each day and interact with a cross-section of people along the padayatra route with an objective of covering 60 Assembly constituencies in the state in phases in the next two months.

Congress MP Uttam Kumar Reddy and some other top leaders also launched padyatras in their respective constituencies.

In Mahabubnagar, Adilabad and other places, protests were also held as part of padyatras demanding action against industrialist Adani over the scam. The protestors raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Adani, alleging that the government at the Centre is trying to shield the industrialist.

Congress leaders alleged that PM Modi is protecting his best friend. They staged a protest against the Modi government’s refusal to allow a debate in Parliament or to constitute Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the scam.

Kuppam: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh on Friday embarked on a 4,000 km-long state-wide padyatra, which is expected to gear up the opposition party for next year’s Assembly elections.

The young leader began the foot march from Kuppam constituency represented by party president and his father N. Chandrababu Naidu, to a massive public response and amid enthusiasm by party cadres.

Thousands of TDP workers and supporters joined Lokesh in the padyatra titled ‘Yuva Galam’ (youth’s voice).

The walkathon will cover 120 Assembly constituencies over the next 400 days across the state.

Lokesh launched the padyatra at 11.03 a.m. after special pooja Varadaraja Swamy temple. He also visited Mecca Masjid at Lakshmipuram and later Hebrass House of Worship Church at Bapunagar where he offered prayers and took the blessings of the community elders.

Lokesh’s father-in-law, popular actor and TDP MLA N. Balakrishna and cousin actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna also participated in the pooja. Later, when the padyatra reached a mosque, Taraka Ratna fell down and fainted due to a stampede-like situation.

The actor was shifted to a private hospital. Balakrishna also rushed to the hospital.

The president of the state unit of the TDP, Atchen Naidu, party politburo members, and thousands of party cadres walked along Lokesh.

The main opposition party said that the sole aim of the padyatra is to end the “atrocious” rule of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. It is confident that the march will create a history in the state.

The party functionaries showered flowers on Lokesh wishing him all the best in his endeavour.

Women activists offered ‘aartis’ to give a grand welcome to the party general secretary, and the locals of Kuppam raised slogans like ‘Chandranna Bidda (Son of Mr Chandrababu Naidu) zindabad’.

The TDP leader will address a public meeting later in the day. Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the walkathon.

Chittoor district police has granted conditional permission for the march. The TDP said that the conditions imposed for Lokesh’s padyatra reflect Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government’s sense of insecurity.

The TDP leaders alleged that the government is trying to create hurdles for the padyatra.
