Border Residents in Uri celebrate this year’s first wedding amid Ceasefire pact

Baramulla, May 01: With ceasefire along, Line of Control (LoC) completing two years, joyous wedding ceremony was held in the Churunada border town of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, marking the first celebration of its kind this year.
Although the relations between India and Pakistan are currently strained, both sides have taken measures to ensure strict compliance with the ceasefire, providing a great sense of relief to those living on both sides of the de facto border who had previously experienced frequent firing and destruction of homes.
Choudhary Lal Hussain, a local resident whose sister was married told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that relatives and neighbors came together to celebrate the wedding, an event that had been previously disrupted by cross-border shelling between the two armies.
Expressing gratitude towards his loved ones for attending the ceremony, he remarked that the peaceful situation in the area over the past two years had made such gatherings possible.
Gulam Rasool, another local said that the wedding was a lively affair, with women singing traditional songs and men playing drums with great enthusiasm.
“Such celebratory events are only possible in an atmosphere of peace and stability, and we hope and pray that such conditions continue at the borders so that people in border areas can live their lives with a sense of safety and comfort,” he said.
Mohammad Amin, another elderly local expressed his joy at the newfound ability to hold celebratory events in his village.
He remarked that in the past, the fear of shelling made it difficult to even hold funeral ceremonies in their homes, let alone weddings. However, he expressed relief that the situation has now improved significantly.

“Before, we used to worry about whether we would be able to hold a wedding or not because of the constant threat of shelling and violence. But now, with the ceasefire in place and a peaceful atmosphere prevailing, we can hold our ceremonies with joy and celebration. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to carry on our cultural traditions without the constant fear of shelling,” he said.
Last year, approximately 250 weddings took place in the border villages of Kashmir, evoking memories of past times when celebrations were held in the comfort of one’s own home rather than being relocated to safer areas outside the villages—(KNO)

DeSantis-backed board moves closer to nixing Disney pact

The DeSantis administration, however, learned about the agreement in March and then scrambled to respond.
David Thompson, the managing partner from Cooper & Kirk, a Washington, D.C. law firm hired by the newly-installed board, said Disney’s agreements giving it developmental power were not following state law, quoting that they were “illegal, and they will not stand.” Thompson then compared Disney to Scrooge McDuck.
Thompson and Alan Lawson, former Supreme Court Justice, who was also hired by the board, said the district was in violation of the Florida constitution because it gave authority to a private company, and also did not establish procedures before accepting a new developmental agreement at a Feb. 8 meeting.
Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The fight against Disney and DeSantis began nearly a year ago after Disney opposed the Parental Rights in Education bill, dubbed as the “Don’t Say Gay,” that prohibits teachers from leading classroom discussions on gender identity and sexual identity in kindergarten through third grade.
DeSantis, who signed the bill into law in March, criticized Disney as a “woke” corporation and pushed the GOP-controlled Legislature to strip the company of much of its authority over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which allowed Disney to operate its own local government.
The board will meet again on April 26, where staff has been asked to make a resolution voiding the agreements.

New Zealand inks pact with IIT Delhi

New Delhi: Demonstrating its overall commitment to India, New Zealand on Tuesday announced an investment of 400K NZ dollars towards internationalisation and student mobility initiatives. These include further engagement with the New Zealand Centre at IIT Delhi to include fellowship grants and the re-launch of the partial scholarships under the New Zealand Excellence Awards. Around 10 different projects are currently going on at the IIT Delhi’s New Zealand centre.
The announcements were made at a roundtable session hosted at the New Zealand High Commission in the presence of David Pine, the New Zealand High Commissioner to India.
Speaking about the several initiatives taken to strengthen the educational ties between India and New Zealand, Pine said, “New Zealand and India share a longstanding relationship that has been growing through various mutually beneficial initiatives.

“The New Zealand-India Education Week, which started on April 17, allows us to lay our ear to the ground and hear the key stakeholders so that New Zealand can continue its varied partnership and collaboration in India’s leading institutions.”
According to Pine, over 3,000 visa applications from India have been approved recently by New Zealand and most of these applications came from students. Over 90 per cent visa applications seeking higher education opportunity in New Zealand have been approved, the official said.
Education experts from New Zealand said that the educational ties between New Zealand and India are set to strengthen following one of Education New Zealand’s biggest events of the year, the India-New Zealand Education Week.
It will encourage a dialogue on research while fostering innovation and cultural exchange and cooperation in the context of international education.
Also, the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) is a unique scholarship scheme designed exclusively for Indian students. The awards are jointly funded by Education New Zealand and all the eight New Zealand universities. Since the launch of the scholarship in 2016, it has supported over 200 Indian students to pursue overseas study at the world-class universities in New Zealand.

Education New Zealand’s Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, said, “New Zealand’s education system is future focussed and multicultural, offering the students an opportunity to earn work-ready degrees.”
“India is one of New Zealand’s priority partner countries for collaborations, exchanges and student mobility. We are excited that today’s announcements around the New Zealand Centre and the launch of the New Zealand Excellence Award scholarships demonstrate our commitment to India as an education partner,” said McPherson.
IIT Delhi’s James Gomes, Dean International, said, “The New Zealand Centre embodies IIT Delhi’s efforts to embrace internationalisation, providing opportunities for new research collaborations and global exposure to our students. The first round of jointly-funded research collaboration, awarded in 2022, has helped foster collaborative, sustainable and self-supporting research programmes.
“Today’s MoU has further enhanced the partnership and cooperation in research, teaching and fellowships between India and New Zealand and provides an opportunity to explore other innovative ventures.”

Samsung, AMD sign multi-year pact to boost mobile graphics experience

New Delhi: Samsung Electronics and chip-maker AMD on Thursday announced they have signed a multi-year agreement extension to bring multiple generations of high-performance, ultra-low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions to an expanded portfolio of Samsung Exynos SoCs.
Through the licensing extension, Samsung will bring console-level graphics quality and optimised power consumption to more mobile devices, offering an incredibly immersive and long-lasting gaming experience.
“Drawing on our technological know-how in designing ultra-low-power solutions, we will continue to drive ongoing innovation in the mobile graphics space,” said Seogjun Lee, Executive Vice President of Application Processor (AP) Development at Samsung.

Samsung and AMD first announced their partnership to license AMD RDNA graphics architecture in 2019, leading to the co-development of Samsung Xclipse, a mobile graphics processing unit (GPU) based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture in 2022.
Xclipse was the industry’s first mobile GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading features for console-like gameplay on mobile devices.
“We are excited Samsung selected multiple generations of our leadership high-performance Radeon graphics to advance the next generation of Samsung Exynos solutions,” said David Wang, Senior Vice President of the Radeon Technologies Group at AMD.
“The extension of our work with Samsung is a testament to our strong technology partnership and commitment to bring the best experiences possible to mobile users,” he added.

‘Decisive breakthrough’: UK PM Rishi Sunak declares new Brexit pact

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday unveiled a “decisive breakthrough” in achieving a new deal with the European Union (EU) to resolve the post-Brexit trade dispute related to Northern Ireland.
After weeks of intensive negotiations, Sunak was joined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a final set of in-person talks in Windsor, south east England, after which the duo addressed the media to confirm a new “Windsor Framework”.
It replaces the previous Northern Ireland Protocol, agreed by Sunak’s former boss Boris Johnson to prevent a hard border between UK territory Northern Ireland and EU member-state Ireland but eventually proving unworkable and causing much tension between the UK and EU.
“I’m pleased to report that we have now made a decisive breakthrough. Together we have changed the original protocol and are today announcing the new Windsor framework,” Sunak told reporters.
“Today’s agreement delivers smooth-flowing trade within the whole United Kingdom, protects Northern Ireland’s place in our union and safeguards sovereignty for the people of Northern Ireland and [removes] any sense of a border in the Irish Sea,” he said.
Von der Leyen echoed Sunak’s optimism to say that the UK and EU can now open a new chapter in their post-Brexit relationship.
They detailed “big steps forward” to deliver trade flow with goods destined for Northern Ireland travelling through a new “green lane” with a separate “red lane” reserved for items expected to move on to the EU.
“We will end the situation where food made to UK rules could not be sent to and sold in Northern Ireland. This means that if food is available on supermarket shelves in Great Britain, then it will be available on supermarket in Northern Ireland,” said Sunak.

The legal text of the Northern Ireland Protocol has been amended to ensure critical VAT and excise changes for the whole of the UK can be made and the devolved Northern
Irish parliament in Stormont would have a say on the changes. “These negotiations have not always been easy, but I’d like to pay an enormous personal tribute to Ursula for her vision in recognising the possibility of a new way forward… Today’s agreement is about preserving that delicate balance and charting a new way forward for the people of Northern Ireland,” added Sunak.
The British Indian leader now faces the uphill task of getting Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) on board with the new Windsor Framework.
The DUP had been strongly opposed to the earlier protocol, which meant goods arriving from England, Scotland and Wales within the United Kingdom were checked when they arrived at Northern Irish ports. This was seen as undermining the region’s position within the rest of the UK, besides severely impacting trade.
The other group likely to make things difficult for Sunak in the House of Commons include the hard Brexiteers within the Conservative Party, including backbencher Johnson, who had warned against backing down over Northern Ireland Protocol Bill which would have given the UK Parliament a chance to unilaterally change parts of the protocol.
However, Sunak had indicated that a fresh negotiated agreement with the EU was preferable over the controversial Bill that would have put the UK on a legal collision course with its European neighbours.

Economic pact with UAE given boost to Indian entrepreneurs: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with UAE has given a boost to Indian entrepreneurs.
Modi said in a tweet that it has also deepened India’s ties with UAE.
He was responding to a tweet by commerce minister Piyush Goyal, who had said on Saturday that February 18 marked one year of signing of India-UAE CEPA.
Goyal along with UAE’s minister of state for foreign trade Thani Al Zeyoudi had co-authored an article on completion of one year of CEPA.
Goyal even tagged the article with his tweet.
“One year since we signed the #IndiaUAECEPA. In this article jointly written with UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade @ThaniAlZeyoudi, we highlight how the deal is a turning point in our economic ties & a model for cross-border collaboration,” Goyal had tweeted on Saturday.
Goyal along with UAE’s minister wrote in the article that “by reducing tariff on more than 80 per cent of product lines, enhancing market access to service exports and providing platform for SMEs to collaborate and scale, both the countries have envisioned a new era of opportunity in an uncertain world”.

US NSF signs $50 mn pact with Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Samsung for chip design

San Francisco: The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced that it has signed a $50 million pact with Ericsson, IBM, Intel and Samsung to support the design of the next-generation semiconductors.
This partnership is a part of NSF’s ‘Future of Semiconductors’ (FuSe) initiative, NSF said in a blogpost.
Through this partnership activity, NSF will collaborate with Ericsson, IBM, Intel and Samsung to fund projects that “cultivate a broad coalition of science and engineering researchers to pursue holistic, co-design approaches.”
“Future semiconductors and microelectronics will require transdisciplinary research spanning materials, devices, and systems, as well as the engagement of the full spectrum of talent in the academic and industrial sectors,” said Sethuraman Panchanathan, NSF director.
“Partnerships such as this are essential to inform research needs, spur innovation, accelerate the translation of results to the market, and prepare the future workforce,” Panchanathan added.
By supporting researchers who are integrating materials, devices, architectures, systems, and applications, the new technology is designed and developed in an integrated way.
“Co-design approaches simultaneously consider the device/system performance, manufacturability, recyclability and impact on the environment,” NSF mentioned.
A nationwide shortage in semiconductors, complicated by the global pandemic, has made it challenging for the chip industry to meet the rising demand for chip-based products.

While that demand is high in the US, only around 10 per cent of the global supply of chips is produced nationally.
“Investments through this public-private partnership will help address this problem by spurring research and innovation leading to breakthroughs in semiconductor and microelectronics technologies, aiding the myriad applications that rely upon these devices,” NSF said.
“This partnership expands upon recent NSF investments to train and build a diverse semiconductor manufacturing workforce in the US,” it added.

Telangana: TSRTC, Nalsoft ink pact for ERP implementation

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nalsoft for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation.
TSRTC is the first among all the State Road Transport Corporation undertakings in the country to commission and implement it, a release from TSRTC said.
The MoU was signed on Monday and exchanged between TSRTC and Nalsoft at Bus Bhavan here by TSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director V C Sajjanar and CA Venkata Nalluri, CEO of Nalsoft.
The TSRTC has a fleet of over 10,000, and 47,528 employees (of which 37,000 are drivers and conductors, and the rest mechanics), who are managed by 200 officers.
It has 99 depots, 364 bus stations, 3,000 routes, managing about 45 lakh passengers (30 lakh fare paying and 15 lakh bus pass-holders), and covering 32 lakh km each day, it said.
In order to integrate all the departments and front office systems, Sajjanar said, TSRTC has decided to implement the Oracle ERP project and Nalsoft will be the implementation partner.
“Given the mammoth size of the organization, people, and operations, it is a very challenging task to implement ERP in a record time, but we all are committed to the same,” he said.
It is expected to go live in the record a 9 months’ time.

Sajjanar further said that as part of the digital transformation of various services and improving internal efficiency they are using the latest technology in the Corporation.
MLA and TSRTC Chairman Bajireddy Govardhan and Sajjanar had reinforced the need to have an effective Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to have an online back office system for depots, zones and the head office, integrating different departments, including m-Finance, HR, Payroll, Mechanical Engineering, Stores and Purchase Departments for a centralised control and access, the release added.
