Bhubaneswar: With the mercury soaring to 40-degree Celsius at nine places across Odisha on Tuesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered closure of all schools up to Class X along with anganwadis from April 12 to 16.

For the past few days, the temperature has been rising in the state with the Met department issuing a heatwave warning throughout Odisha.

In this context, anganwadis and schools up to Class X, both government and private, will remain closed from Wednesday to April 16, the Chief Minister directed.

On arrival from Japan on Tuesday evening, Patnaik immediately took a review meeting with senior officials on the current heatwave condition as well as the prevailing Covid situation in the state.

Patnaik directed the administration, particularly the panchayat raj, housing & urban development and energy departments, to remain preprared to deal with any situation.

The Chief Minister asked the concerned authorities to ensure smooth supply of drinking water, both in urban and rural areas, with special focus on water scarcity pockets. He also directed the energy department to ensure continuous power supply to meet the demand during heatwave conditions.

Patnaik also advised the administration to keep in touch with various professional Met agencies to collect information about monsoon and prepare advanced planning accordingly.

The Chief Minister was briefed about the current Covid scenario in the country in general and Odisha in particular. The Chief Minister advised the concerned officials to monitor the situation closely, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.

As per an evening bulletin from the Bhubaneswar centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Baripada recorded the highest maximum temperature of 41.6-degree Celsius on Tuesday, followed by Jharsuguda (41.2), Sambalpura (40.8), Bhubaneswar (40.7), Titlagarh and Boudh (40.5), Angul (40.1), Cuttack and Sundergarh (40).

Due to northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation, day temperature is likely to rise further by 3 to 4-degree Celsius in the districts of interior Odisha in the next four days.

Forecasting heatwave conditions from April 13 to 15, the Met department has issued yellow warning for several districts.

The weather department has advised people to take precautionary measures while going out between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Unseasoned heavy rains, coupled with hailstorms across the state for the past few days mark this year’s March as the wettest in ten years.

After Hyderabad experienced the second hottest February in a decade, March brought in a winter and rainy combination of weather.

Kapra, in the neighbourhood of the city, recorded the highest rainfall of 6.28 cm, while most areas in north Hyderabad witnessed heavy rains coupled with hailstones in several places including Gajularamaram and Kukatapally recording 5.6 cm and 5.05 cm of rainfall respectively.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD-Hyderabad) officials, the phenomenon is abnormal for the month of March when the temperature should have gradually increased as winter subsides completely.

“It was not a normal thunderstorm and hailstorm event that covered almost the entire Telangana. This was because of the presence of two troughs or depressions – east to west and north to south – occurring simultaneously,” the IMD-Hyderabad chief told TOI.

According to statistics collated by Telangana State Development and Planning Society, Telangana received 4.35 cm of rainfall in March 10 years ago.

A decade later, the monthly cumulative until March 19 in the state stands at 3.81 cm while the highest March rainfall of 10.74 cm was recorded in 2008.

Surprisingly, the month of March has witnessed average rainfall exceeding 3 cm only six times in 25 years since 1988.

Another water held that such events are witnessed owing to western disturbances or the winds from the west of India.

However, this year the western disturbances came as a jet stream towards Telangana which instead of being 10 km to 15 km above sea level were extremely low, bringing in massive rainfall and hailstorms.

The experts further claimed that strong unseasonal rain in March might suggest the El Nino effect, which is known to make monsoons weaker and non-monsoon unseasonal showers stronger.

“However, the arrival of the monsoons cannot be predicated until May,” said experts.

    Red alert for rains issued

Many areas in Hyderabad were also issued a red alert on March 18 while the unseasons rain videos trended on social media.

Rains cause heavy losses to crop cultivation sector

Crops cultivated on more than 20,000 acres of land were damaged following unseasonal rains.

Maize, green gram, papaya and mango and other crops, most of which were in flowering and ripening stages were destroyed by the hailstorm that lashed Telangana on Thursday and Friday.

Horticultural crops like mango, rose, onion, and papaya and agricultural crop like maize were damaged by the hailstorm.

According to Agriculture department officials, over 18,826 acres of maize, farmed by around 1,930 farmers, was damaged in the erstwhile Khammam district alone.

Mangoes prices likely to hike over unseasonal rain

Unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

Out of the total production of mangoes in the neighbouring districts of Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, a significant portion is exported to foreign countries like Gulf countries, China, Australia, and others which is also going to be affected subsequently.

New Delhi: Only 1 per cent women migrated from their hometowns to other places within the country for employment reasons, while 87 per cent women shifted out of their place of domicile due to their marriage. Almost 50 per cent men in India migrated from their hometowns to other places in search of employment within the country during 2020-21.

These are the findings of the ‘Multiple Indicator Survey India’ conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) for the year 2020-21, which were released on Tuesday.

As per the survey, among the male respondents, 48.8 per cent moved out of their hometowns due to employment related reasons, while 8 per cent moved out due to study-related reasons. Only 1 per cent of the male respondents shifted out of their places of domicile due to socio-political problems.

Among female respondents, 87 per cent moved out of their hometowns due to marriage, while a mere 1 per cent of them shifted due to employment-related reasons, the sample survey revealed.

NSSO carried out the Multiple Indicator Survey covering the entire country in its 78th round. The survey was initially planned to be conducted during January-December, 2020 but the field work was extended till August 15, 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The objectives of the MIS were to collect information for developing estimates of some important Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, to collect information regarding purchase or construction of houses or flats by the household for residential purpose after March 31, 2014 and for collecting information on migration.

The entire country was covered by the survey, barring some villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands which were difficult to access.
