BJP leaders praise BBC when it suits them: Owaisi on IT raids

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday attacked the central government over the I-T department’s survey operation at BBC offices, saying when it suited the BJP during the Emergency period (1975-77) their leaders used to praise the foreign broadcaster.

He stressed that the freedom of press was very important for a functional democracy, while concurring with the statement issued by the Editors Guild of India, condemning the raids.

The AIMIM chief expressed hope that BBC will not be pressurised and will continue to tell the truth.

“When it suited the BJP during Emergency period, their leaders used to praise the BBC. I am sure that the BBC will continue to tell the truth to the people. The timing is absolutely wrong and that is why the Editors Guild issued a right statement condemning the raids,” the Hyderabad MP told reporters here reacting to queries on the I-T survey against BBC India.

The Income Tax department survey against BBC India continued for the second day today with sleuths understood to be making copies of electronic and paper-based financial data of the organisation.

The tax department had launched surveys on Tuesday at the Delhi and Mumbai offices of the media house along with at least two linked premises as part of a probe into alleged tax evasion against the British broadcaster in India.

The action comes weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary, “India: The Modi Question”.

Reacting to another query on Centre’s decision to appoint retired Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazeer, who was part of the 2019 Ayodhya verdict, as Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Owaisi said there is no constitutional bar on appointing anyone to the honourable post of Governor, but wondered why the retired judge accepted the post.

“Now if some doubts arise in the minds of common people that the biggest litigant in this country is the government. Now, after your retirement, you are given a post by the same government, who is the biggest litigant and you were presiding over that litigation… so, some doubts might arise in the mind of a common man. I don’t know whether those doubts are genuine or not,” he said.

“So, these doubts should not have arisen and this will lead to so many questions in future. I don’t know why the honourable retired judge has accepted this post because as a judge he was allotted a house and every facility. It is for the BJP to answer this question.”

Justice (retired) Nazeer was part of the five-judge Constitution bench which had in November 2019 cleared the way for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) and directed the Centre to allot a five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for a mosque in a different location.

Owaisi also welcomed the top court’s appointment of its former judge Justice L Nageswara Rao to oversee the upcoming elections of the office bearers of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).

“It is a good thing. HCA elections should be held at the earliest. If elections are held genuinely, meritorious young cricketers of Hyderabad who are performing well will get opportunities,” he added.

Akbaruddin Owaisi slams Centre for failing to release funds to Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Extending complete support for the Telangana government’s annual budget for 2023-24, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre for failing to release the funds and to allocate projects to Telangana.

Taking part in the discussion on the annual budget in the Assembly on Wednesday, the AIMIM floor leader said the Centre was only giving 2/3 of amount to Andhra Pradesh and 1/3 of amount to Telangana from the taxes collected from the respective States and other than this, the Centre was not extending any help for the development of Telangana State.

He alleged that the union government was not honouring the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and it didn’t deliver a single promise mentioned under the Act.

Stating that the revenue was drastically declined to States after the introduction of GST, Akbaruddin Owaisi advised the Telangana BJP leaders to bring a mount pressure on the Union government for bringing funds to Telangana, instead of criticising the BRS government.

Reminding that the Centre has abolished the facility of pre-metric scholarships to Minority students, the AIMIM leader urged the State government to think over the introduction of a similar scheme in Telangana so that Minority students will continue to get a financial aid during their education.

He also asked the State government to release all the arrears related to the Minority community and students and fillup all teaching and non-teaching posts lying vacant in the Universities across the State.

Hyderabad: KTR, Owaisi on same table for Old City development

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi attended a high-level review meeting chaired by IT and municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao on Tuesday.

Home minister Mahmood Ali, Chevella MP Ranjith Reddy and other officials were also present in the review meeting.

Akbar, during an Assembly session on Saturday, had slammed the BRS over the ‘injustices’ done to the Old City. In response to this KTR stated that the AIMIM MLA with just seven seats was taking much more than the time allotted to it.

Akbar angered by his reply had said that the AIMIM will contest 50 Assembly seats in the coming election and try to win at least 15 seats so that his party gets a greater say in the Assembly.

While addressing the review meeting, KTR said that irrespective of political affiliations and areas, the development of the entire Hyderabad was the ultimate motto of the state government.

KTR listed out the projects underway and progress achieved in providing drinking water, power supply, mobility infrastructure, maintaining sanitation, conservation of heritage structures and works on other fronts during the meet.

The Minister said, “As part of the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), strengthening of the road network in the Old City area is going on at a brisk pace and several flyovers, and construction of roads have been completed,” adding that projects worth crores of rupees were underway.

Stressing on road widening in the Old City area, KTR asked officials to speed up the work in localities where it was essential.

He further went on to say that works related to traffic junctions, and the construction of FoBs were under progress and the construction of bridges across the River Musi will be taken up soon.

Drawing attention towards the water supply in the Old City area, KTR said that the drinking water supply has improved in the last eight years and that more than Rs 1,200 crore was spent for the same.

“Over 2.5 lakh tap connections were provided in the Old City under the free water supply scheme of the Telangana government and the HMWS&SB has taken up several initiatives to strengthen the sewage water system.

Regarding future developments, the minister said, “Plans are ready for the restoration of Mir Alam Mandi and that the proposals for the construction of a six-line cable bridge over Mir Alam Tank are in the stage.”

Expressing satisfaction over the priority given to the development of the Old City, Akbar thanked the government and assured that his party would extend all support to implement the development projects.

  • Assam govt’s motive malicious: Owaisi on crackdown on child marriages

Assam govt’s motive malicious: Owaisi on crackdown on child marriages

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday questioned the Assam government’s motive behind its crackdown on child marriages in the state and said the exercise reflects a “failure of governance” by the BJP dispensation.

“There is a malicious motive behind all the action that is being taken,” the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader told PTI in a telephonic interview, when asked about the hundreds of arrests made in the northeast state.

More than 2,250 people have been arrested in Assam till Saturday in the crackdown on child marriage, according to an official statement by the state government.

Owaisi, who was in Lucknow to attend the executive committee meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said, “As you know the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act was passed in 2006, and it is the BJP’s government which is in power in Assam for the last six years. Now, why did the government not stop all these in the last six years? This really shows the failure of their governance.”

“Experts have said that if you want to stop child marriages, you have to open a lot of schools, (but) you have not done that. You have closed down the madrassas too which were imparting some form of education,” he alleged.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the drive against child marriage launched by the state police from the previous day would continue till the next Assembly elections in 2026.

A total of 2,258 people have been arrested so far across the state based on 4,074 FIRs, the Assam government statement said.

Speaking to PTI, Owaisi asked who would now take care of the poor women who have been left in the lurch after the state government’s crackdown on child marriages.

“Now, who will look after those poor women? Forget about whether they are Muslims or not Muslims or Hindus? Who will take care of them now? What steps is the government taking to look after them? … many of them have children now,” he said.

Owaisi also informed that he recently shared a tweet about an Assamese woman who has died by suicide.

“You must remember that at 18-plus, we allow consensual sexual relationships. So, how does it make sense if at 18 she is having a consensual sexual relationship and then you are saying it is child marriage? Even in the law, this needs to be looked into,” he said.

“It is a completely biased government against Muslims, discriminatory against Muslims. For example they went on an (anti)-encroachment drive, wherein they made hundreds of Muslim families homeless in Assam. In upper Assam, they gave ‘pattas’ (land strip) to landless people, but in lower Assam, they don’t do that,” Owaisi alleged.

The Assam cabinet had recently decided that those having married girls below 14 years of age will be booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The council of ministers also took the decision that cases under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 will be registered against those who have married girls in the 14-18 years age group.

AIMIM to contest on 50 seats in next Assembly polls : Akbaruddin Owaisi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on Saturday informed in the Assembly that the party would contest on as many on 50 seats across Telangana.

During the heated debate ensued between the ruling BRS government and the AIMIM during the passing of motion of thanks to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan ‘s address on Saturday, Akbaruddin Owaisi said that he would discuss with the party president about fielding of more candidates in the forthcoming elections in the state and see that AIMIM contests on fifty seats and double the number of legislators from seven to fifteen.

Earlier AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin requested the Assembly Speaker to allow the MIM legislators more time to discuss the people’s issues in the House, Minister KT Rama Rao retorted saying the party has only 7 MLAs and questioned how much more time their legislators needed?

With this, the heated arguments and sharp exchanges took place between KTR and Akbaruddin Owaisi. The MIM MLA also said the BRS government is working for the overall development of Hyderabad city but it overlooked the Old city. He demanded that the government should also consider developing the surroundings around the historical Charminar.

Asaduddin Owaisi raises concern over Assam govt’s crackdown against child marriages

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday raised concern after the Assam government’s crackdown against child marriages.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Hyderabad MP said, “What will happen to those girls who have been married? The Assam government has booked 4000 cases and is talking of booking 4000 more. So, who will take care of those girls? You are putting a mountain of troubles over them.”

“You are in the government for six years, so it is a failure of the state. Why haven’t you built more schools in the state,” he added.

He further accused the BJP of being “biased” and alleged that the government is not giving land to people in Lower Assam.

“This government is biased against Muslims. They gave land to landless people in Upper Assam but didn’t give the same to people in Lower Assam, instead are evicting people in huge numbers,” he said.

The AIMIM chief also raised concern over the adjournment of Parliament for the second day in a row.

“We want to raise certain issues in the Parliament, but the government is not letting the Parliament function. It is benefitting them as they are able to get away with the questions,” he further said.

Notably, considering a surge in cases of child marriage (below the age of 18 years) of Assam women as reported by the National Report of the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led State government is carrying the crackdown against child marriages.

As per the latest development, Assam police have arrested 2258 people, across the state, involved in child marriage incidents.

Police said they have a list of 8,000 accused and as the drive continues, the figures will increase.

The drive was launched on Thursday night after CM Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a video-conference meeting with senior officials of the police department directing them to launch a crackdown to rid the state of the evil practice of child marriage.

This episode of this slew of crackdowns dates back to May 5, 2022, when the Health Ministry released the fifth report of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), carried out in 2019 and 2020.

The report, following a fine and detailed reading by the Assam government, showed serious concerns regarding child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and maternal mortality.

It was found in the report that 31.8 per cent of women in Assam between 20-24 age were married at a minor age or before 18 years. This was even higher than the national average of 23.3 per cent.

Of these 31.8 per cent of women, more than half (50.8 per cent) cases were from All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MP Badruddin Ajmal’s parliamentary constituency, Dhubri.

As per the government, child marriage leads to teenage pregnancy in women causing maternal deaths in the state.

According to the Assam police data, 139 people have been arrested in Biswanath, 126 in Dhubri, 120 in Baksa, 114 in Barpeta, 97 in Nagaon, 96 in Hojai, 94 in Kokrajhar, 87 in Bongaigaon, 79 in Karimganj, 76 in Hailakandi, 72 in Cachar, 72 in Goalpara district in cases related to child marriage.

Director General of Assam Police (DGP) GP Singh, while addressing a press conference on Friday, said that 4,074 cases related to child marriage have been registered at different police stations across the state.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that the crackdown against child marriages in the state would continue in the coming days.

UP: UCC, Gyanvapi on agenda in Muslim personal law board meet; Owaisi to attend

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLA) has called for an Executive Committee meeting tomorrow in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow.

The meeting is believed to be convened to discuss topics like Gyanvapi, Uniform Civil Code, and Religious Conversion, among others. “Future strategy will also be engineered in the said meeting,” AIMPLA Executive Member Qasim Rasool Ilyas told ANI.

The AIMPLA has 51 Executive members including All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

Board General Secretary Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, Asaduddin Owaisi, Arshad Madani etc., will attend the meeting.

Earlier, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in Rajya Sabha told BJP MP Nishikant Dubey that a proposal to examine issues relating to Uniform Civil Code and make recommendations may be taken up by the 22nd Law Commission.

The minister told Dubey, who had raised the issue as a matter of urgent public importance on December 1 last year in Lok Sabha, that the proposal was referred to the 21st Law Commission but since its term has ended, the matter may be taken by the 22nd Law Commission.

Article 44 of the Constitution provides that the State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code (UCC) throughout the territory of India.

“In view of the importance of the subject matter and sensitivity involved and it requiring an in-depth study of provisions of various personal laws governing different communities, a proposal to examine issues relating to uniform civil code and make recommendations has been forwarded to the 21st Law Commission of India,” Rijiju said in his letter.

Nishikant Dubey had urged the party-led central government to expedite the process to bring in a law to implement the Uniform Civil Code.

If implemented, UCC is likely to provide one law for the entire country, applicable to all religious communities in their personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

Owaisi urges Centre to ban movie on Godse

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded a ban on the upcoming movie on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse.

The Hyderabad MP asked the Union government if it will ban the movie on Godse like it banned the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Stating that nobody in India can be greater than Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R. Ambedkar, Owaisi said this country can never allow portrayal of a terrorist as a hero.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president was addressing a public meeting in the old city of Hyderabad on Sunday night.

He demanded the Centre to ban the movie and ensure that it is not released in any theatre.

Owaisi was apparently referring to the movie ‘Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh’ of Rajkumar Santoshi, scheduled for release on January 26.

Recalling that in 2013 a film on Bhindranwale was also banned by the government, he asked why a film on Godse can’t be banned.

“Why do you have so much love for Godse. How long will you continue to chant the name of Gandhi but love Godse in your heart?” he asked.

Terming Godse as the biggest terrorist of independent India, Owaisi wanted to know the opinion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the assassin of Gandhiji.

Referring to the ban on BBC documentary in India, he asked if the Prime Minister would also ban the movie on Godse.

The Hyderabad MP also asked the RSS to speak about Godse. He pointed out that Godse and Savarkar had a close relationship. He alleged that the ruling party was trying to portray the murderer of Gandhiji as a hero.

The AIMIM chief also slammed the union government for its attempts to interfere in the judiciary.

Stating that the judiciary is independent under the Indian Constitution, he alleged that the Modi government wants to appoint judges who agree with its ideology.

He said the government recommended a BJP Mahila Morcha leader in Tamil Nadu who had declared herself a ‘chowkidar’ on her Twitter account, for the post of judge.
