Maha ex-CM Ashok Chavan claims being ‘watched’, Shinde orders police probe

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday said that he has directed state Director General of Police to probe complaints submitted by former CM Ashok Chavan that he is under the “surveillance” of some elements in Mumbai and Nanded.

“I have spoken with Chavan and also with the DGP. I have given instructions to carry out a detailed investigation into the issues raised by Chavan,” Shinde said.

Chavan made a shocking claim that he was allegedly shadowed and under the “watch” of some persons and how someone had forged his letterhead as the PWD Minister of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

He said that the letter, dated May 5, 2022 was written to the then CM Uddhav Thackeray with the intent to create an impression that he was working against the Maratha community.

“I am under the watch of a few people who are following me everywherea where I go, whom I meet and are warning that I should meet the same fate as the late Vinayak Mete,” Chavan told media persons in Nanded and Pune in the past two days.

The reference was to the Maratha leader and Shiv Sangram chief Mete, who was killed in a road accident on August 14, 2022 on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. After his family raised suspicions over his death, three days later, Shinde ordered a CID probe into the tragedy.

Chavan said that he has filed a complaint on the forged letter with Nanded’s Additional Superintendent of Police Abinash Kumar pointing out how the text of an earlier letter was replaced without touching the letterhead and signature to convey a misleading narrative.

Rushing to Chavan’s support, state Congress President Nana Patole demanded to know whether the state government is conspiring to eliminate Opposition party leaders.

“Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut has given a complaint of a contract to kill him. Now a former CM Chavan is under surveillance and has spoken of plans to finish him. Why is an ex-CM of the state being trailed and what is the motive,” demanded Patole.

Besides, he pointed out the instance of the attacks on Sena-UBT leader Aditya Thackeray’s vehicle in Aurangabad, the assault on Congress MLA Dr. Pragya R. Satav, and other similar cases involving opposition parties leaders in the past 7 months, and the recent threats issued to Nationalist Congress Party leader Dr. Jitendra Awhad and his family.

Patole said that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated and if the people in power are working to eliminate the Opposition, then it is a disgrace for democracy.

He urged the state government to immediately look into all these cases and take appropriate action against the culprits.

A 20-year-old man allegedly killed a Flipkart delivery partner who came to deliver an iPhone at Karnataka’s Haasan district, reported The Hindu.

The accused stabbed the delivery person as he did not have money to pay for his order.

According to the report, Hemant Datta, the resident of Lakshmipuram in Haasan district’s Arsekere ordered an iPhone through Flipkart in the beginning of February. Hemanth Naik who works as a delivery agent with the e-commerce site came to the house of the accused on February 7 to deliver the phone. • Telangana: DGP orders inquiry into custodial death of 35-year-old

Telangana: DGP orders inquiry into custodial death of 35-year-old

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana director general of police Anjani Kumar on Saturday ordered an inquiry into the death of a man who allegedly died due to police torture by the Medak police while in custody. The incident took place in Medak district, and the deceased, 35-year-old Mohammed Khair, died in Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on February 18.

“DGP has directed IGP Chandrasekher Reddy to give investigation to a senior officer of Kamareddy District . The IGP will supervise the investigation. Disciplinary action initiated against the Insp and Sub Inspector,” said a statement from Anjana Kumar, a day after the death of Khadir. On Saturday, All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Kausar Mohiuddin attended Khaidr’;s funeral in Medak, and demanded that the police book the two cops involved in the alleged torture.

A 35-year-old daily wage labourer, Mohammad Khadir, on Friday succumbed to the injuries he had sustained due to torture by the police. In a statement while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Medak, he alleged that he was kept in custody for five days and beaten up by policemen though he kept telling them that he was innocent.

“The cops said the person involved looks like me,” he said. The police let him off on February 2 when he was unable to move his hands. They (police) asked him to tell others that he was kept in custody for one night. They also reportedly asked him to sign a paper and as he was unable to even hold the pen, one of the policemen signed the paper.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later taken to Medak for last rites. Khadir’s death triggered public outrage. Local Muslim community leaders urged Bharat Rastra Samiti (BRS) MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy to take action against the policemen involved.

Subsequently, the AIMIM MLA spoke with the Medak Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohini Priyadarshini, demanding an investigation into the incident.

The SP transferred SI Rajshekar and the two constables, Pavan and Prashanth.

AIMIM MLA from Hyderabad, Kausar Mohiuddin visited Medak and attended the funeral on Saturday morning. He slammed the police for the restrictions imposed on the funeral and questioned if Qadeer was a “naxalite or terrorist”.

The MLA demanded that the three policemen involved in the case should be booked for murder. He said the FIR should be changed to include the names of the SI and the two constables.

Telangana DGP orders probe into Khadeer’s custodial death case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar on Saturday directed the Inspector General of Police to supervise the probe of the alleged custodial torture-related death of Mhammad Khader who was picked up, by Medak police, suspecting his role in a theft case.

The 35-year-old daily wage labourer on Friday succumbed to the injuries he had sustained due to the alleged torture by the police.

The man was picked up from his sister’s house in Hyderabad on January 29 on suspicion of being involved in a theft case and was brought to Medak.

They also asked him to sign a paper and as he was unable to even hold the pen, one of the policemen signed the paper.

Khadeer named the two constables and the Sub-Inspector (SI). He said while the SI only slapped him twice or thrice, the two constables beat him up all over the body.

Due to the alleged torture, Khadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged. His wife Siddeshwari, alleged that police used third-degree methods on him. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak.

As Khadeer’s condition kept deteriorating, he was referred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on February 17 and is survived by his wife and two children.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later taken to Medak for last rites.

Khadeer’s death triggered public outrage. Local Muslim community leaders urged Bharat Rastra Samiti (BRS) MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy to take action against the policemen involved.

  • Telangana govt orders state-wide inspection of all piggery farms to check for cruelty

Telangana govt orders state-wide inspection of all piggery farms to check for cruelty

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana director of animal husbandry has directed all district veterinary and animal husbandry officers/member secretaries of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to instruct field-level officers to keep a check on the usage of gestation and farrowing crates in the piggery farms in Telangana.

This happened after the department received a representation from Mercy For Animals India Foundation, a press note from the organisation said.

The letter directs the District Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of all districts to ensure compliance with Section 11(1)(e) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which states that any person who “keeps or confines any animal in any cage or receptacle which does not measure sufficiently in height, length and breadth to permit the animal a reasonable opportunity for movement” is punishable by fine or imprisonment.

“Pregnant and nursing pigs confined in gestation and farrowing crates don’t have enough space to even turn around,” said Niharika Kapoor, the organising coordinator at Mercy For Animals India Foundation. “As a result, the pigs suffer bone degeneration and show signs of extreme stress, including biting the metal bars of the crates,” she added.

After appeals from Mercy For Animals India Foundation and other groups, more than 16 states—including Delhi, Bihar, Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Manipur, Mizoram, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, West Bengal, and Punjab—have already prohibited the use of gestation and farrowing crates, the press note stated.

A right-to-information response furnished by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) National Research Centre on pigs states that gestation and farrowing crates severely restrict movement and hence violate Section 11(1)(e) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. ICAR referred to a demi-official letter dated January 2014 to all veterinary universities and the National Research Centre on Pigs advising against the use of gestation crates in universities or research facilities. ICAR also cited the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Punjab, which had issued directives to district officers to ensure that no gestation crates are used in the state.

  • Kathua gang rape: Delhi HC orders media fines to be deposited in J&K legal aid

Kathua gang rape: Delhi HC orders media fines to be deposited in J&K legal aid

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed its Registrar General to transfer the sum paid by media houses as fined for disclosing the Kathua rape case victim’s name to the Victim Compensation Fund maintained by Jammu & Kashmir State Legal Services Authority.

The amount is for donating the victims or family of deceased victims of sexual violence.

A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said: “The Registrar General of this court is directed to transmit the amounts so deposited by respondents no.8, 28 (two media houses) and by other respondents (media houses) in the present case, if any such amount is still lying with the court, to the Victim Compensation Fund maintained by the Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority for disbursement of funds to the victims/families of the deceased victims of sexual violence.”

In the 2018 brutal gangrape was followed by the victim’s murder, the High Court in the same year took by itself the decision against media houses for their reports disclosing the victim’s name, violating Sections 23 and 228A of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

“The manner of reporting of the incident is also against the public justice,” said the bench.

The court had issued notices to over 15 media houses and directed them to deposit Rs 10 lakh each.

With time, more media organisations were asked to pay the compensation.

Earlier, the court had called the media houses’ move of displaying the photograph of the victim “unfortunate” and “extremely distressing”.

The incident dates back to January 10, 2018, when the eight-year-old had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. A week later, her body was found in the same area.

  • Netherlands orders expulsion of Russian diplomats

Netherlands orders expulsion of Russian diplomats

    [ad_1]

    getty putin putinism

The Dutch government on Saturday ordered the expulsion of several Russian diplomats over Russia’s “continued attempts to place intelligence officers into the Netherlands under diplomatic cover.”

The Netherlands also said it will close its consulate general in St. Petersburg on Monday and the Russian trade office in Amsterdam by Tuesday.

The moves are the latest development in ongoing negotiations over visas for diplomats: The Netherlands expelled 17 Russian diplomats last March over espionage concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — after which Russia expelled 15 Dutch diplomats.

“Negotiations with Russia over the terms of sending diplomats back and forth to diplomatic posts have so far come to nothing,” the government said in a statement Saturday. “Russia keeps trying to surreptitiously place intelligence officers in the Netherlands as diplomats. At the same time, Russia refuses to issue visas for Dutch diplomats to staff the consulate general in St. Petersburg and the embassy in Moscow.”

It described the situation as “unacceptable” and “untenable.” The Dutch government added that it was “important to keep the embassies open as a communication channel, even now that relations with Russia are more difficult than ever.”

The diplomats now have two weeks to leave the country.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will “give an appropriate response” to the Dutch decision, according to a report by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
