Judge orders depositions of Trump, Wray in long-running dispute with ex-FBI officials

    [ad_1]

    trump russia probe fbi 74296

Jackson, an appointee of President Barack Obama, also stressed that she had not yet considered all potential objections to the demands for testimony from Trump and Wray. That could include arguments by Trump that he has the unilateral right as a former president to assert executive privilege.

Trump has spent years publicly assailing Strzok and Page for their disparaging private messages about him, claiming they proved that FBI bias fueled the Russia probe, despite independent reviews that failed to substantiate those claims. Strzok was fired amid the controversy, and Page resigned. Strzok is contesting his dismissal, and both are claiming invasion of their privacy over the manner in which the Justice Department released hundreds of their text messages.

In the suits, Strzok and Page contend that Trump and his Justice Department appointees were carrying out a political vendetta.

The Justice Department and the FBI have both denied that Trump’s public attacks played any role in the bureau’s decision to fire Strzok, saying it was a decision arrived at by career officials and carried out without political pressure. They’ve argued that deposing Trump or Wray would shed little light on decisions that were made by others at the FBI.

But Jackson’s ruling suggests there might be evidence that she thinks only Trump and Wray can provide. She noted that her decision was rooted in an analysis of the “apex doctrine,” which requires litigants to first seek information from figures at lower rungs of an organization before pursuing testimony of more senior officials.

Jackson also indicated that the depositions would be limited to a “narrow set of topics” that were defined in a sealed hearing on Thursday.

  • Will Roll Back All Anti-People Orders When NC Comes To Power: Dr Farooq

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President and Member of Parliament Dr Farooq Abdullah said that when NC comes to power, it will roll back all the anti-people steps.

He made these comments while chairing a provincial committee meeting at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha, Srinagar. Party Vice President Omar Abdullah was also present on the occasion.

During the breadth of the meeting the functionaries highlighted the contemporary public and party issues, including the inflation, unemployment, rampant demolition drive, and imposition of the property tax. The committee members also gave their estimation of the prevailing ground situation with regards to the deteriorating security situation, development deficit and the rising tide of intolerance against contrarian views in J&K. The underway wanton suppression and prolonged detention of local youth besides plethora of other issues were also raised in the meeting.

Interacting with the functionaries, Dr Farooq said that the down sliding of democracy has hurt every sector of Jammu and Kashmir without any exception. “The litmus test for a democracy is if the policy decisions are made through democratic procedure and have popular support. Unfortunately the current administration’s decisions sans both!” he said.

Terming the recent government actions as anti-people and a grave injustice, he said, “Such decisions must be left to a democratically elected government in J&K. It all started with disempowering, disenfranchising our people, now they are dispossessing them. We won’t allow this. If NC comes to power, all these anti people policies have to go lock stock and barrel. We cannot act as mute spectators to the injustices committed by this government. People will punish them through elections as and when they are held. They cannot run away from it for long, one or the other day they have to face the people’s raging anger.” He asked the functionaries to enhance their public contact.

  • Bengaluru: Bus conductor fails to return Rs 1; court orders BMTC to pay Rs 3K as compensation

Bengaluru: Bus conductor fails to return Rs 1; court orders BMTC to pay Rs 3K as compensation

    [ad_1]

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) was recently ordered to pay a man Rs 2,000 in compensation after he was denied Rs 1 change for a bus ride by the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.

According to several media reports, in 2019, a man named Ramesh Naik went on a BMTC bus from Shantinagar to Majestic bus depot, during which the conductor issued a ticket for Rs 29. The complainant paid Rs 30 and was not given the change.

Keeping up the fight, Naik then complained about the conductor to BMTC’s high authorities. To his surprise, the authorities made fun of him and drove him away.

Unhappy with this, he filed a complaint with the local consumer court, asking Rs 15,000 in compensation.

The court has now ordered the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to pay the guy Rs 2,000 in compensation. The court also ordered BMTC to pay Rs 1,000 towards the complainant’s legal expenses.

“It is the customer’s right to receive the balance due to him, even if it is Rs 1,” the court said while slamming the managing director of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for the incident.

When Naik presented his case in court on his own, the counsel for BMTC refuted the charge, claiming the lawsuit was frivolous.

The judges of the consumer court stated in their judgement announced on January 31, 2023 that the complaint is undoubtedly modest in nature, but the BMTC bus conductor’s ‘inattentive’ and ‘irresponsible’ service is unacceptable.” It is the right of the consumer to collect his money even if it is Re 1 and, thus, he is entitled by the Customer Protection Act, 1986 to receive proper compensation from BMTC for the shortcomings,” the judges underlined.

The court ruled that the BMTC’s MD must repay Re 1 to the bus passenger in addition to providing him Rs 2,000 in compensation for the inconvenience. Court further directed that Naik be given Rs 1,000 for his lawsuit fees, and that all monies be paid within 45 days of the decision, or interest would be assessed as a penalty.

  • MP: Court orders registration of FIR in Dalit youth suicide case

MP: Court orders registration of FIR in Dalit youth suicide case

    [ad_1]

Indore: A special court in Indore has ordered registration of a First Information Report in connection with the February 2022 suicide of a 21-year-old Dalit man due to alleged police torture.

The family of the deceased had alleged that he was tortured by police as he was in love with a Brahmin girl and eloped with her.

Police allegedly refused to probe the suicide, so the family moved a special court for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act cases, said the family’s lawyer Neeraj Kumar Soni.

Special judge Manoj Kumar Tiwari earlier this month ordered the Scheduled Castes welfare police station here to register a case and submit a report after probe, Soni said.

Badia, a B Com student, left home along with his Brahmin girlfriend on February 9, 2022, with the intention of getting married, as per the complaint.

Police sub-inspector Vikas Sharma, posing as the girl’s uncle, visited his house on the same day and threatened the family members using casteist words, the complaint said.

Sharma called Akash to Chandan Nagar police station on February 10, 2022, and beat him up inside an ambulance parked on the police station premises, it alleged.

The police official allegedly warned him that if he married the woman, he would be implicated in rape and drug cases and spend his whole life in jail.

Akash allegedly hanged himself at home on February 16, 2022.

A note on his mobile phone accused Vikas Sharma and another official of the Chandan Nagar Police Station of being responsible for his death.

Despite the family’s complaint, no suicide case was registered, the complaint alleged.
