MP: Violence breaks out in Mhow over death of tribal woman, probe ordered

Bhopal: Tension prevailed in Indore’s Mhow on Thursday following violent protests over the suspicious death of a tribal woman even as the government ordered a magisterial inquiry.

Over six police personnel, including an inspector, were injured in the stone pelting done by the protesters.

On Wednesday, a 23-year-old tribal woman, who was preparing for competitive exams, was found dead in a rented room. Alleging that the woman was gang-raped and murdered, the family members staged a protest while keeping the body on the road.

Upon receiving information, local police reached the protest spot and tried to disperse the assembled people. However, the angry mob pelted stones at the police. Subsequently, police had to use teargas and fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

“Six cops were injured due to stone pelting. The situation was brought under control, however, police personnel have been deployed in the area. Woman died under suspicious circumstances following which her family staged protests. The woman was living in a rented room for her studies,” Indore SP (Rural) Bhagwant Singh Virde said.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter, according to a statement issued by his office on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath has sent a team of tribal MLAs of the party to the area. The Congress leaders are likely to visit the family.

“Murder after gang-rape of a tribal girl in Mhow of Indore district and murder of a tribal youth in police firing has proved the jungle raj is prevalent in Madhya Pradesh. I am pained, distressed by this heartbreaking incident and stand with the aggrieved tribal families in this hour of grief,” Kamal Nath said.

  • Telangana govt ordered to pay pensions withheld amid COVID-19 with 6% interest

Telangana govt ordered to pay pensions withheld amid COVID-19 with 6% interest

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Monday ordered the state government to pay retired government employees a portion of the pension that was withheld during the COVID-19 epidemic along with six percent interest.

A bench of the Telangana High Court comprising chief justice Ujjal Bhuyan and justice N Tukaramji emphasised that the Telangana government should follow the Supreme Court’s instructions clear out the pension dues with added interest to it.

In addition to this, the court further disposed of a group of petitions and PILs, filed by pensioners demanding 12 percent interest on the unpaid pensions.

However, the government objected to the order while claiming that the choice to postpone payment of salaries and pensions was made because of the unstable financial situation in the state arising from the outbreak of COVID-19.

It further stated that the state had behaved responsibly and that there was no justification for subjecting it to the burden of paying interest.

In 2021, the Supreme Court changed the interest rate on pensions from twelve percent to six percent.

  • Uttarakhand: Magisterial inquiry ordered in lathi charge incident on youth protesters

Uttarakhand: Magisterial inquiry ordered in lathi charge incident on youth protesters

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday ordered for detailed magisterial inquiry into the alleged lathi charge incident by the police on the youngsters who were demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the recruitment scams in the state.

“The Chief Minister has directed the Chief Secretary for a detailed magisterial inquiry into the law and order situation and the entire sequence of lathi charge,” a statement from the CM office said.

“After checking all the facts and circumstances, the inquiry officer will make the detailed inquiry report available to the government,” it added.

The Uttarakhand police used a baton charge on the youngsters who were demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the recruitment scams in the state after stones were allegedly pelted at them during a massive protest in Dehradun on Thursday, police said.

Dehradun DIG while taking note of the matter said that an investigation is underway into the matter.

He also said that some “outside elements” entered the protest to vitiate the atmosphere.

Some outside elements entered the protest to vitiate the atmosphere. Stone pelting was done and police vehicles were damaged while many personnel were injured. An effort is underway to identify the accused. Probe underway,” he further said.

However, police personnel also detained several protestors during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, hitting out at the Dhami government, former Chief Minister of state Harish Rawat said that the lathi charge by the police on the students was “unfortunate”.

“Students are demanding a robust exam system. Already there is a lack of jobs due to the BJP government, then paper gets leaked and cancelled. When students were protesting they were lathi-charged which is unfortunate,” Rawat said.

He also said that CM Dhami should speak with the students.

The government is facing sharp criticism after several exams were cancelled due to the leakage of the examination papers.

The recent UKPSC paper leak which resulted in the Patwari Lekhpal exam being cancelled for around 1.4 lakh candidates.

Uttarakhand recently faced a major paper leak case in December.

The case pertains to a written exam conducted by the UKSSSC in December 2021.

It was one of the major examinations conducted by the commission for 854 posts across 13 departments.

However, there were widespread allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the test. Following these allegations, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami called for a probe and strict action against those guilty.

Following this, the secretary of the commission was removed from the post. A Special Task Force (STF) was also constituted to investigate the alleged irregularities.

After the Uttarakhand State Subordinate Service Selection Commission was caught up in a paper leak case, the government asked the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission to conduct recruitment exams.

However, UKPSC officials were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the UKPSC Paper leak for the Patwari Lekhpal exam, which was conducted on January 8, 2023. As of now, a total of four people have been arrested in the case.

A case has been registered against nine people at Haridwar’s Kankhal police station on Friday after an investigation by Police’s Special Investigating Team (SIT) for the irregularities in AE/JE exam under Uttarakhand Public Services Examination (UKPSE), as informed by Uttarakhand CMO.

However, the CM on Thursday said that he approved an ordinance to bring the country’s strictest “anti-cheating law”.

“As a promise to the youth, our government has decided to bring the strictest anti-cheating law of the country. I have approved the Ordinance in this regard and sent for further action,” he wrote in a tweet in Hindi.

  • Mohammed Shami ordered to pay monthly alimony to estranged wife Hasin Jahan

Mohammed Shami ordered to pay monthly alimony to estranged wife Hasin Jahan

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A Kolkata court on Monday ordered Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 1.30 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan.

Out of the Rs 1.30 lakh, Rs 50,000 will be the personal alimony to Hasin Jahan and the remaining Rs 80,000 will be the cost of maintenance of their daughter who is staying with her.

In 2018, Hasin Jahan filed a legal case seeking a monthly alimony of Rs 10 lakh, with Rs 7,00,000 for personal expenses and Rs 3,00,000 for the maintenance of their daughter.

Her counsel Mriganka Mistry informed the court that as per the income tax returns of the Indian pacer for the financial year 2020-2021, his annual income for that fiscal was over Rs 7 crore, and on the basis of that, the demand for a monthly alimony of Rs 10 lakhs was not unjustified.

However, Selim Rahman, the counsel for Shami, claimed that since Hasin Jahan herself was having a steady income source by working as a professional fashion model, the demand for that high alimony amount was not justified.

Finally, after hearing both sides, the lower court, on Monday, fixed the monthly alimony amount at Rs 1.30 lakh. Although expressing gratitude over the court’s directive, Hasin Jahan claimed that she would have been relieved had the monthly alimony amount been higher. There was no reaction from the Indian pacer on this count till the report was filed.

On September last year after the victory of the Indian team against Pakistan at Asia Cup, Hasin Jahan shared in social media a photo of Hardik Pandya, who led India to victory with a six and there she took a veiled attack against Shami, who was not in the Indian squad.

“Congratulations. A memorable victory. Thanks to our Tigers for helping the country win. This had to happen; the country’s reputation and honour are protected by honest patriots rather than criminals and womanisers,” her post then had read. The post sparked widespread outrage among fans and many criticised Hasin Jahan for her veiled attack on Shami.
