‘Congress backing terrorism by opposing Kerala Story’: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

Ballari: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a poll rally in Karnataka on Friday launched an attack on the Congress and accused the Opposition party of opposing “The Kerala Story” film, which he said exposed the consequences of terrorism.

“‘The Kerala Story’ film is based on a terror conspiracy. It shows the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes the design of terrorists”, the PM said adding that Congress is standing with terrorists who are trying to ban the film.

Addressing a rally in Ballari ahead of the upcoming May 10 elections in Karnataka, the Prime Minister also accused the Congress party for shielded terrorism for the vote bank.

“Congress is opposing the film made on terrorism and standing with terror tendencies. Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank”, PM Modi said.

“The Congress has kneeled down before the terror outfits when in power. We have suffered because of the violence for very long and Congress never protected this country from terrorism. I am surprised to see that Congress has succumbed to terrorism for the sake of its vote bank. Can such a party ever save Karnataka?,” PM Modi said.

Security system, law and order is the most important requirement to make Karnataka number one state of country, the prime minister said. “It is equally important for Karnataka to remain free from terrorism. BJP has always been tough against terrorism. But Congress gets stomach ache whenever action is taken on terrorism,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress manifesto released for the Karnataka polls which promised to ban organisations like the Bajrang Dal.

“The Congress is shuddering to see the support we are getting. They get scared even if I say Jai Bajrangbali,” PM Modi said.

Lashing out at the Congress the prime minister said that the Congress had long back accepted that it’s an 85 per cent commission party. “Congress’ former PM Rajiv Gandhi himself told that his government sent 100 paise from Delhi, but only 15 paise reached the poor. In a way, he himself accepted that Congress is a party with 85 per cent commission,” the prime minister said.

Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court today refused to issue a stay order on the release of ‘The Kerala Story’.

Asserting that secular Kerala society will accept the film for what it is, the High Court today asked petitioners how the movie, which it observed is fiction and not history, would create sectarianism and conflict in the society.

The court sought to know whether the entire trailer was against society.

“Nothing will happen just because the film is screened. The teaser of the film was released in November. What was offensive in the film? What is wrong in saying that Allah is the only God? The country gives the citizen the right to believe in their religion and God and spread it. What was offensive in the trailer?”, the court observed while considering a batch of petitions seeking to cancel the censor certificate of the film.

“So many movies have already come out about such organizations. There have been references against Hindu monks and Christian priests in many films before. Did you see all this in the way of fiction? What is so special now? How does this movie create sectarianism and conflict in society?”, the court observed.

The petitioners argued that the film would inject poison into the minds of innocent people and added that no agency has yet detected the existence of ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the upcoming movie.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles. The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Faced with backlash the makers then withdrew the figure and called the movie the story of three women from Kerala, in its trailer description.

Russia accuses US and its allies of opposing multipolar world in Asia-Pacific region

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The US and its allies have severely eroded the global security architecture in a bid to maintain global dominance, Russian Defence Minister Gen Sergei Shoigu said on Friday amid Moscow’s increasingly frosty relations with Washington over the Ukraine conflict.

In his address at a conclave of defence ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Delhi, Shoigu also said that Western powers are actively opposing the formation of a multipolar world in the Asia-Pacific region.

“As has been noted, today’s meeting takes place against the background of a highly volatile international environment,” he said.

“Fundamental, dynamic, and irreversible changes are taking place as the new multipolar world takes shape. This is actively opposed by the collective West. In a bid to maintain global dominance, the US and its allies have severely eroded the global security architecture,” he alleged.

Russia and the US have been at loggerheads over the Ukraine conflict with both sides making allegations and counter-allegations against each other.

On the sidelines of the SCO defence ministers’ meeting, Shoigu also met his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu.

“We have always stressed the importance of building equal and indivisible security, of preserving the central role of the UN, of upholding its charter and its purposes and principles aimed at maintaining peace and stability,” the Russian defence minister said.

“We believe it is important to strengthen the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation as one of the pillars of the new multipolar international system, a model of inter-state relations based on equality and mutual respect,” he said.

“It is necessary to maintain close coordination within the SCO and to hold regular consultations on common security issues, both in multilateral and bilateral ways,” he added.

India hosted the meeting in its capacity as chair of the grouping.

The SCO is an influential economic and security bloc and has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations.

The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan became its permanent members in 2017.

  • “There’s a new ‘sheriff’ in this town”: DeSantis corners Disney for opposing his “anti-woke” policies

“There’s a new ‘sheriff’ in this town”: DeSantis corners Disney for opposing his “anti-woke” policies

    [ad_1]

The crusade anti-woke Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida and probable candidate for the White House for the Republican Party in 2024, will stop at nothing, not even before the almighty Disney, the main employer of the Sunshine State. DeSantis has it in for the entertainment company since its then-CEO Bob Chapek last year criticized an education law that opposes teaching in Florida schools up to the age of nine about topics related to sexual orientation and gender identity. His detractors call that law Don’t Say Gay (Don’t say gay).

DeSantis summoned the media in Lake Buena Vista on Monday to sign a regulation that allows him to take control of the governing body of the Reedy Creek Improvement District (Reedy Creek Improvement District), an area of just over 100 square kilometers in the that sits since 1971 Disney World, the most famous amusement park in the world. The site, renamed the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, will no longer be governed by a board made up of people close to the company, but by five members handpicked by the governor.

Ron DeSantis supporters protest on the highway leading to Disney World in April.OCTAVIO JONES (REUTERS)

Announcing it Monday, DeSantis, who is gearing up for a busy week that will continue this Tuesday with the release of his second memoir, The Courage to Be Free (The courage to be free), said: “There is a new sheriff in this town.” He is taking a liking to the phrase, which he already pronounced last week, when the law passed the parliamentary process in a Congress whose two chambers are comfortably dominated by the Republicans, which is allowing the governor to meet the objectives of his agenda in a hurry, before of the foreseeable announcement of his presidential candidacy. DeSantis added: “The corporate kingdom has come to an end,” in an apparent reference to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

In the reign of DeSantis, that ultra-conservative experiment that is being carried out in Florida, there is no respite for the “culture woke”, a term that the American right has turned into its favorite insult and used to define those who “woke up” to injustices to fight against racism and inequality and in favor of feminism, LGTBI rights or trans people. All these groups have become the governor’s obsessions, and he seems to have obtained a high yield from them, as demonstrated by the results of the last elections in November, when he won by a margin of 1.5 million votes over the opponent from he.

“Disney opposed something [la ley educativa] that he was only meant to protect the little ones and make sure that students can go to school to learn to read, write, add, subtract and not have a teacher tell them they can change their sex,” DeSantis said Monday. “I think most parents are okay with that.”

The move against Disney, harsh as it may be, is only a partial victory for DeSantis. His initial idea was to have made the district disappear, as of June 1, 2023, which would have been divided between Orange and Osceola counties. Both would have had to take care of paying municipal services such as electricity or water, as well as the costs of the police, ambulances or firefighters, accounts that since 1967 have been borne by the company. In addition, they would have inherited a debt of approximately one billion dollars. Those small details made Florida lawmakers recoil. And for a moment last fall it seemed that the multinational and the State were ready to sign peace, after the return of Bob Iger at the controls of Disney, replacing a struggling Chapek.

Although DeSantis could not strip the Californian company of the tax advantages it enjoyed, the new board members will have powers to tax, build infrastructure and borrow money for projects related to the theme park. The law also removes permits, never used, that Disney had to build its own airport or even a nuclear power plant.

Among the profiles chosen for the new board, which will meet for the first time next week, are Martin Garcia, a Tampa lawyer whose investment firm contributed $50,000 to the governor’s re-election campaign, and Bridget Ziegler, founder of the conservative organization Moms for Liberty, which is behind many of the book ban campaigns in libraries and school curricula across the United States. Faced with the prospect, DeSantis, a Yale and Harvard graduate who appears to have carved the rhetoric of him in a multiplex, watching 1980s movies, threatened Monday: “So fasten your seatbelts.”

  • ED counsel cites Vidyasagar while opposing Partha Chatterjee’s bail plea

ED counsel cites Vidyasagar while opposing Partha Chatterjee’s bail plea

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) counsel on Tuesday drew the reference of iconic educationist and social reformer from Bengal, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, while opposing the bail plea of former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment scam in the state.

“Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on September 26, 1820. He advanced the education system of Bengal during his time by 100 years. Partha Chatterjee’s birthday is on October 6, 1952. He pushed West Bengal’s education system backwards by a hundred years,” ED counsel Phiroze Edulji said during the hearing at the special PMLA court on Tuesday.

He also claimed that the ED has secured information that Partha Chatterjee received Rs 10 lakh from arrested Trinamool Congress youth leader Kuntal Ghosh as a share of the scam proceeds.

“ED is investigating the matter further,” he said.

Claiming that no money has been recovered from the residence of Partha Chatterjee, his counsel claimed that his client has been arrested because of political vendetta. Chatterjee’s counsel also moved two parallel pleas, the first related to bail and the second related to his relief from the case.

However, the judge hearing the matter questioned how can the plea for bail and the plea for relief from the case be placed in a parallel manner. Thereafter, Chatterjee’s counsel withdrew the second plea.

Meanwhile, opposing the bail plea, the ED counsel said that how influential Chatterjee is is evident from the fact that during his arrest by the central agency in July last year, he had mentioned the mobile number of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as his emergency contact number.

“This proves how influential he is. Hence if his bail plea is granted, there is every possibility that attempts will be made to tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses,” the ED counsel said.

Thereafter, the court rejected Chatterjee’s bail plea.
