  • Aaditya, Sanjay Raut oppose defamation plea filed by Maharashtra MP in Delhi HC

Aaditya, Sanjay Raut oppose defamation plea filed by Maharashtra MP in Delhi HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut on Monday opposed before the Delhi High Court a defamation plea filed against them by Maharastra MP Rahul Ramesh Shewale for allegedly levelling frivolous corruption charges against him and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.

While Raut’s counsel submitted that they have a right to criticise in a democratic space, former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray said there was nothing slanderous about the political statements made by him.

Pursuant to an earlier high court order, former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, his son Aaditya Thackeray and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut made their appearances in the court through their respective lawyers.

    MS Education Academy

The three defendants filed their replies to the plaintiff’s application seeking an interim relief to remove the alleged defamatory content from social media platforms.

Justice Prateek Jalan listed the suit for the completion of the pleadings before the joint registrar on May 10.

During the hearing, senior advocate Devdutt Kamat, appearing for Raut, said for the first time in the history of common law, a political party is suing for defamation.

He claimed that the plaint was not maintainable and it was an attempt to gag free speech.

“Is it that in a democratic space there can’t be any criticism?” the counsel asked and said there was no question of any interim relief to be given to the plaintiff.

To this, the judge said, “We will see what is the nature of the criticism. We will see what the statements are and surely, I have due regard for freedom of speech.”

The high court issued summonses to Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray and Raut on March 28 and asked them to file their written submissions within 30 days.

It had also asked Google and Twitter to file their written statements within 30 days on the plea.

In his reply to the application for interim relief, Aaditya Thackeray said it is a regular practice for politicians to comment upon each other’s conduct in a political discourse and as a public figure, the plaintiff ought to take the “bouquets as well as brickbats” and that “public figures cannot be allowed to be thin-skinned as it would entirely stifle all criticism of them”.

“The entire suit is nothing but a malicious attempt at clamping down on free political speech, which ought not to be permitted by this court. It is submitted that the allegedly slanderous statements made by defendant no. 3 (Aaditya Thackeray) are nothing but political speech and the same is protected under the right to freedom of speech under the Constitution of India,” the reply filed through advocate Naman Joshi stated.

It said the plaintiff has filed the suit in his personal capacity and not as an office-bearer of either his own political party — Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) — or the Election Commission and has made no whisper as to how he, his party or the EC has been defamed and in whose eyes.

Shewale was represented in the court through senior advocate Rajiv Nayar and lawyer Utsav Trivedi.

In the suit, Shewale has sought a permanent injunction and damages against the defendants on account of alleged false, malicious and unsubstantiated allegations levelled and circulated on social media platforms and other offline and online media.

He has said the allegations are libellous, unfounded and misconceived and tainted with collateral objectives, which were made knowingly and deliberately to harm the dignity of the plaintiff and his political party.

“The present plaint demonstrates that the defendant nos 1 to 3 have conspired with each other and with other unknown individuals or organisations to launch a series of scathing and belligerent attacks against the plaintiff and the political party which the plaintiff belongs to, that is, Shiv Sena, with the oblique motive to malign, defame and injure the plaintiff’s reputation, based on a series of blatant falsehoods and gross misrepresentations,” the plea has said.

Hindu activists oppose Quran recitation at Karnataka religious fair

    [ad_1]

Hassan: Ahead of the Assembly polls in Karnataka, Hindu activists have opposed the ritual of reciting the Quran during the historical Chennakeshava Rathotsava in Beluru town of Hassan district.

Hindu organisations have demanded that the ritual should not be observed as it is against the religion.

They have called for a bandh on Tuesday in this regard.

The historical religious fair is scheduled to be held on April 4 and the district administration is concerned with the developments taking a communal turn at the time of elections.

The architecture of the 12th-century Beluru Chennakeshava temple is considered to be a marvel. It was built over three generations and took 103 years to complete.

The temple is expected to get a Unesco heritage tag.

Despite opposition from Hindu activists, the Quran recital tradition was carried out during the religious fair last year.

The activists have claimed that the ritual of Quran recital was forcefully added in 1932.

Dr Ramesh, a doctor and author, has released a book in this regard and explained how it is unnecessary to carry out a Quran recital before the Hindu god Sri Channakeshava.

The Hindu activists are questioning if it is possible to recite Hindu prayers at mosques and dargahs. They claim that the ritual was forced upon Hindus as a part of appeasement politics.

The ‘Rathotsav’ ceremony is performed for two days, which is a rare phenomenon in the state.

The idol of Channakeshava will be embellished with gold and diamond jewels gifted by the erstwhile Kings of the Mysuru kingdom.

Lakhs of devotees gather during the temple fair.

Last year, the administrator of the temple had written a letter to the Muzrai department seeking clarification over the continuation of the ritual which has been carried over for years and symbolic of Hindu-Muslim unity.

Rohini Sindhuri, who was the Commissioner of Muzrai Department had given green signal for the continuation of the ritual.

She had stated that according to Section 58 of the Hindu Religious Act 2002, there should not be any interference in the rituals and traditions of the temple.

After the direction, the temple committee decided to carry out the ritual recital of verses from the Quran .

Manchin’s move also comes as he faces the prospect of a tough reelection race next year in his Republican-leaning state. He has not said whether he’ll run for another term.

Manchin’s opposition is unlikely endanger Werfel’s nomination, which appears assured. Werfel won bipartisan support on the chamber’s Finance Committee, with three Republicans there backing him. The Senate is expected to vote on Werfel’s confirmation Wednesday evening.

“At every turn, this administration has ignored congressional intent when implementing the Inflation Reduction Act,” Manchin said, referring to the law that includes the tax incentives. “First and foremost, the IRA is an energy security bill with clear and direct guidelines to ensure we are able to onshore our supply and manufacturing chains.”

“But instead of adhering to Congressional intent and prioritizing our nation’s energy and national security, the Treasury Department has pandered to automakers and progressive extreme groups and continued to sacrifice the national security of the United States.”

Will oppose RSS till my last breath, asserts Siddaramaiah

    [ad_1]

Mysuru: Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday asserted that he would oppose the RSS till his last breath.

“Whether I am in power or otherwise, until I am alive, I will remain opposed to the RSS,” he said.

Addressing a meeting of Congress party workers at T. Narasipur in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah stated that the RSS is opposed to an equal society and he opposes it for this reason.

“As inequality existed, social reformer Basavanna built Anubhav Mantap. The Anubhav Mantap of those days is the Parliament,” he said.

He said that the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha have opposed the Constitution of India and the BJP also has an anti-constitutional stand. “If the Constitution is opposed it is as good as opposing Dr B.R. Ambekar,” he said.

“Ambedkar had warned that, if elected governments did not strive to eradicate social and economical inequalities in the society, the socially and economically weaker sections will demolish the pillars of democracy one day,” he stated.

Stressing that Hindu and Hindutva are different, he said: “I am Hindu. My parents are Hindus and I worship Hindu gods. BJP MLA and National General Secretary C.T. Ravi calls me Siddramullah Khan. Does he have any respect?”

  • Oppose unipolar world running in US interests: Putin

Oppose unipolar world running in US interests: Putin

    [ad_1]

Moscow: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Sunday said that the main cause of his country’s difference with the US and its allies was its strong opposition to creation of a unipolar world fitting Washington’s agenda, media reports said.

Moscow is striving to create a multipolar world rather than one that is centred around the US, he said in an interview to Rossiya-1 TV channel, RT reported.

The Russian President claimed that America’s “satellite states” are also well aware of the US’ “egoistic” intentions, but, have chosen to ignore it, for the time being, “due to various reasons connected first and foremost with huge dependence in the economic sphere and defence”.

He also contended that some of Washington’s allies also see confrontation with Russia as a unifying cause.

He cited the US government’s efforts to attract European businesses to American soil, as well as a submarine deal last year where Australia suddenly junked a contract with a French manufacturer in favour of its US rival.

Putin emphasised that Russia “cannot and will not behave like this”.

“In the end, such a stance – the fight for a multipolar world, for respect for each and everyone in the international arena, for taking into account everyone’s interests – I don’t have the slightest doubt, will prevail,” he said.

The Russian leader also claimed that Western elites will only be “satisfied” and prepared to “admit us into the so-called family of civilised nations” if Russia disintegrates into several independent states, where the the West would “place (the resulting countries) under its control”.

On his decision earlier this week to suspend Russia’s participation in the New START Treaty – the last remaining nuclear accord between Moscow and Washington – he said that the move was required to safeguard his country’s security as well as its “strategic stability”.

According to the Russian President, he opted for this course of action in light of a more aggressive NATO, which has announced that “its prime goal is Russia’s strategic defeat”.

  • Mayors Of Srinagar, Jammu Oppose Govt’s Move To Impose Property Tax In JK

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The move by the  administration to impose property tax on those falling under the jurisdiction of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Jammu and Kashmir from April 1 has come under fire, with the mayors of the twin capitals of the Union Territory speaking out against it.

Srinagar City Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattu, called the imposition of the property tax “arbitrary” and stated that the decision was not approved by elected ULBs.

He added that the SMC will explore ways to contest this move.

Meanwhile, Jammu Mayor, Rajinder Sharma, stated that the property tax was imposed by the Administrative Council of the Union Territory and not by the JMC.

He said that the aspirations of the people of Jammu must be taken into consideration, and an urgent General House Meeting (GHM) of JMC will be held on Friday to discuss the property tax and who shall be exempted from it.

“The JMC Commissioner, Rahul Yadav, will give a presentation to clear any misconceptions about the property tax, and the views and concerns of JMC Councillors will be collected and sent to the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, BJP J&K President, Ravinder Raina, and BJP National President, J.P Nadda for accommodating the concerns of the Councillors,” he added.

The mayors of both cities emphasized that the aspirations of the public and Councillors should be fulfilled, and that everything should be done to address their concerns.
