Fifteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva topples Beatriz Haddad Maia at Madrid Open

    [ad_1]

Across the southern barrios of Madrid, the 15-year-old Mirra Andreeva continued to command attention on her debut at the Madrid Open as she followed up her maiden WTA victory against Leylah Fernandez by toppling Beatriz Haddad Maia, the world No 14, 7-6 (6), 6-3 to reach the third round.

Andreeva, a Russian player who was born in Siberia but lives in Cannes, is only the seventh player under 16 years old in the 21st century to defeat a top 20 player. The victory continues one of the most impressive breakout seasons this year.

Since narrowly losing in the Australian Open girls final, Andreeva has won every professional match she has played in 2023 and received a wildcard in Madrid after winning two consecutive ITF tournaments. Currently ranked 194, Andreeva will rise to a new career high of at least 164. She is also the youngest of two playing siblings: her 18-year-old sister, Erika, is ranked 114th and on the verge of the top 100.

“I’m a bit surprised [to be in the third round] but also everyone was telling me they are playing the same level as you, they are just more consistent,” Andreeva told WTA Insider. “Their mental level is different but the game-level is almost the same.”

Andy Murray’s poor run of form continued as he was beaten in the first round of the Madrid Open by Andrea Vavassori, an Italian qualifier ranked 164, losing 6-2, 7-6 (7). While Murray started the match poorly the Italian served well, with the Scot rushing the net as he quickly found himself down a set and a break. Despite his poor level throughout, Murray still had the chance to force a third set after recovering the second set break and pushing Vavassori to a tie-break.

From 3-6 down in the tie-break, Murray saved three match points and then put himself in a brilliant position at 6-6, sweeping to the net and finding an open court to finish the point. Instead, he dumped a backhand volley into the net. Shortly after Vavassori closed out the match.

“You probably would have made that,” said Murray to a journalist, smiling. “No disrespect to your tennis abilities, but I mean it’s not a shot that top players should be missing. Bad miss.”

After a positive start to the season, Murray’s form has flatlined. Over the past six weeks he has lost four matches, and eight sets, in succession. Despite a variety of views within his team, though, Murray says he would like to play at the French Open, possibly for the last time.

“I would like to play just purely because I don’t know if I’ll get another opportunity to play again,” he said. “Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give it a go. But, yeah, I also have ambitions of competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff. I know that sitting here today that probably doesn’t sound realistic, but I do believe that that’s a possibility. I obviously want to do the right thing there.”

Telangana: Officials break open strongroom of Dharmapuri Assembly segment

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Officials in Telangana’s Jagtial district on Sunday broke open the strongroom of Dharmapuri Assembly constituency on the direction of the Telangana High Court, which is hearing a petition for re-counting of votes polled in 2018 elections.

The strongroom at VRK College of Engineering and Technology in Nookapally village of Jagtial was broken open in the presence of Jagtial district collector Shaik Yasmeen Basha and other top officials as its missing keys could not be traced by the Election Commission of India officials.

The officials will submit the records pertaining to the polling percentage and votes secured by all candidates to the High Court.

    MS Education Academy

The court had earlier directed the Election Commission to furnish CCTV footage and other records pertaining to counting of votes.

On April 10, the district collector and other officials had reached the strongroom to open it on the High Court’s order. However, the Election Commission officials found the keys missing. After the High Court was informed about the same, it directed officials to break open the room.

The Election Commission officials will submit 17A and 17C documents to the High Court, which is hearing petition Congress candidate Aduluri Laxman Kumar for recounting of votes.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate Koppula Eswar was declared elected by 441 votes. Eswar is now a minister in the State Cabinet.

Eswar and Laxman secured 70,579 votes and 70,138 respectively.

Alleging that there were irregularities in the counting of votes, Laxman had filed a petition for setting aside Eswar’s election.

Last year, the Supreme Court had dismissed Eswar’s petition seeking a stay on the proceedings in the High Court

During the hearing of the case in the High Court, Laxman’s counsel had pointed out discrepancies. According to him, the returning officer in his report to the chief electoral officer said that the number of votes in all 269 polling stations was 1,65,209 which accounts for 79.96 per cent of polling. However, he claimed that as per the information furnished by authorities to them under the RTI Act, 1,65,341 votes were polled and the polling percentage was 80.02.

  • Scientists, educators write open letter against dropping biological evolution theory from Class 10

Scientists, educators write open letter against dropping biological evolution theory from Class 10

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A group of more than 1,800 scientists, science teachers and educators has written an open letter raising concerns about the chapter on “Theory of Biological Evolution” being dropped from the NCERT textbook for Class 10.

The signatories to the letter include scientists from noted institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and IITs, among others.

As part of its curriculum rationalisation exercise, the NCERT had last year announced that the chapter “Heredity and Evolution” will be replaced with “Heredity” in the Class 10 science textbook.

    MS Education Academy

Among the topics dropped from the chapter are ‘Evolution’, ‘Acquired and Inherited Traits’, ‘Tracing Evolutionary Relationships’, ‘Fossils’, ‘Evolution by Stages’, ‘Evolution Should Not Be Equated With Progress’ and ‘Human Evolution’.

The new books as per the rationalised curriculum have hit the market now with the commencement of new academic session.

Demanding that the theory of Darwinian evolution be restored in secondary education, the signatories, who are part of the “Breakthrough Science Society”, have said that understanding the process of evolution is “crucial in building a scientific temper” and depriving students of this exposure is “travesty of education”.

“Knowledge and understanding of evolutionary biology is important not just to any sub-field of biology, but is also key to understanding the world around us. Evolutionary biology is an area of science with a huge impact on how we choose to deal with an array of problems we face as societies and nations from medicine and drug discovery, epidemiology, ecology and environment, to psychology, and it also addresses our understanding of humans and their place in the tapestry of life,” the letter said.

“Although many of us do not explicitly realise, the principles of natural selection help us understand how any pandemic progresses or why certain species go extinct, among many other critical issues,” it added.

The scientists noted that in the current educational structure, only a small fraction of students choose the science stream in grade 11 or 12, and an even smaller fraction of those choose biology as one of the subjects of study.

“Thus, the exclusion of key concepts from the curriculum till grade 10 amounts to a vast majority of students missing a critical part of essential learning in this field,” the letter said.

Dropping of several topics and chapters by the NCERT has been caught in controversy with several chapters, which were not notified by the council last year, found missing from the new textbooks.

While earlier the NCERT had claimed that not mentioning certain changes in the rationalisation booklet could have been an “oversight”, later it said “minor changes need not be notified”.

  • Hyderabad: Neglected open spaces to get ‘Urban Acupuncture’ makeover

Hyderabad: Neglected open spaces to get ‘Urban Acupuncture’ makeover

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana government on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hyderabad Urban Lab Foundation (HUL) to turn various open land parcels in the city into vibrant living spaces through ‘Urban Acupuncture’.

This initiative aims to promote well-thought-out design solutions for informal settlements like slums, abandoned and open places, stepped spaces and places with rapid urbanisation.

Neglected open spaces will be converted into vibrant living spaces such as playgrounds and libraries using ‘Urban Acupuncture’. All this will be taken up using low-cost intervention techniques.

    MS Education Academy

The open spaces will be reclaimed by clearing garbage and Construction and Demolition (C&D) dumps.

The Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) department along with the Revenue department and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) aim to develop them into meaningful public activities such as libraries, play areas, social gathering places, and points for economic convergence, over a period of time.

The project also aims to include the local stakeholders in order to promote a sense of ownership.

Citizens are encouraged to send the list of such neglected, misused and likely to get encroached open spaces in their neighbourhoods, through Twitter @TSmaudonline or @ghmconline or contact the local deputy commissioner or the zonal commissioner of GHMC.

An MoU was signed between the MA&UD department and the HUL foundation to promote sustainable models, tools, and best practices for low-cost urban innovation and sustainable urbanisation in the presence of minister KT Rama Rao.

HUL, led by Anant Maringanti, will provide urban infrastructure and aesthetic design solutions. HUL shall partner with the local stakeholders, private organisations, architecture students and colleges, and nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.

  • Biden to open up Medicaid, Obamacare plans to DACA recipients

Biden to open up Medicaid, Obamacare plans to DACA recipients

    [ad_1]

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement that the proposed rule would “improve health outcomes for DACA recipients and would in turn improve the economic and productive capacity of America.” He estimated that roughly a third of immigrants enrolled in the DACA program are uninsured.

The details: The proposed rule submitted by CMS amends the definition of “lawful presence” to include DACA recipients, also known as “Dreamers,” for eligibility for Medicaid and marketplace coverage. Medicaid and exchange applications will have their eligibility verified electronically when they apply for coverage, the administration said.

While finalization of new rules usually takes some time, the Biden administration expects to have the new policy in place by the end of the month.

Context: President Barack Obama created the DACA program in 2012, shielding immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation and allowing them to work legally in the United States. But DACA recipients have continued to lack access to key federal programs and benefits, such as health care coverage, because they lack permanent legal status.

Biden has focused on using his executive powers to protect and extend benefits to DACA recipients. And the president said on Thursday that he will continue to press Congress to create a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.

The moves represent a sea change from the approach taken by the Trump administration, which attempted to dismantle the DACA program.

State perspective: Several states, including California, New York and Minnesota, already cover DACA recipients through Medicaid. However, they have been unable to receive federal matching dollars for the coverage and have had to pull from their own state coffers.

Other states have taken creative approaches to expand health insurance access for immigrants, such as Colorado’s new OmniSalud program, which allows people to purchase health insurance through the state marketplace without disclosing their immigration status and potentially receive state subsidies to help with premium costs.

  • Telangana: One-Time Registration launched by TREI-RB, registrations open

Telangana: One-Time Registration launched by TREI-RB, registrations open

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: For the first time ever, the One-Time Registration (OTR) service provided by the Telangana Residential Educational Institutions Recruitment Board (TREI-RB) is available for candidates seeking regular employment in various residential educational institutions.

Similar to the Telangana State Public Service Commission’s (TSPSC) OTR, the TREI-RB’s OTR makes it easier to apply for Board-issued recruitment announcements.

The OTR form can be found on the website https://treirb.telangana.gov.in/. Aspirants must complete the form before signing up for notifications.

    MS Education Academy

Candidates need to provide details of local status, Aadhaar, community, EWS status, residence address and mobile number. Education from Class I to VII along with the local district, zone and muti-zone need to be filled in as part of the basic information in the OTR.

Notably, other educational qualifications including the highest qualification obtained have to be mentioned in the OTR.  No need to upload photocopies of educational qualification certificates.

Candidates must fill up their community certificate number issued by the State government.

A TREI-RB official said candidates who received their community certificate before 2016 in the State are suggested to get the latest certificate from a concerned authority as such certificates lack a unique number.

“The community certificate number mentioned in the OTR should be validated. Candidates who don’t have the unique number on their certificate must apply for a fresh certificate,” the official said.

Candidates who complete OTR successfully will receive a unique ID that can be used to generate a password. Applications for various recruitment notifications can be submitted with this ID and password.

“All essential subtleties given in the OTR will automatically reflect in the application structure. However, the applicant must fill out the subject-wise qualification and other details. There is no last date to fill the OTR,” the official said.

Recently, nine notifications for 9,231 vacancies were released by the TREI-RB. Applicants can register for lecturer, physical director, and librarian positions in degree colleges, as well as junior lecturer, physical director, and librarian positions in junior colleges between April 17 and May 17.

Online applications for vacancies of postgraduate teacher, librarian physical director in schools, craft teacher, art and music teacher can be submitted between April 24 and May 24.

Likewise, online applications for the Trained Graduate Teacher recruitment notification can be applied between April 28 and May 27.
