Meeting Government, A Futile Exercise: Omar Abdullah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Thursday demanded the release of all political prisoners including former legislature Engineer Rashid.

In response to a question, Omar Abdullah said that not only Engineer Rashid, but all those Kashmiris incarcerated in different jails should be released. He said Public Safety Act should go once and for all.

Omar Abdullah was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party convention at the Aarigam Khansahab area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

He admitted that a delegation from Jammu and Kashmir is meeting the Election Commission of India to know the reason for the delay in conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “There is nothing wrong in meeting the Election Commission which is responsible for holding elections across India. The delegation wants to know what wrong did Jammu Kashmir do that people here are being deprived of having their own elected government.”

Omar Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said that the last time elections were conducted was in 2014 in Jammu and Kashmir and since then there is no elected government.

When asked why they are always meeting the opposition leaders and not the government, Omar Abdullah said there is no fun in meeting the government as it doesn’t budge and doesn’t listen to them. “We have stopped meeting the government as it is a futile exercise,” he said.

Omar Abdullah said except for the Opposition there is nobody in Jammu and Kashmir while the government dictates the terms and doesn’t take people or political leaders on board.

“Government only knows how to harass people. When we tried to meet the government, it didn’t oblige.”

Regarding the deferment of examinations by JKSSB after a row over the APTECH job recruiting agency, Omar Abdullah said it was better late than never. However, he demanded a thorough probe and said there is something fishy and people wanted to know why a blacklisted agency got the contract in Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]

Satya Pal Malik’s Security Cover Downgraded, Omar Abdullah Reacts

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik criticised the Union government for downgrading his security cover.

In an interview with India Today, Malik said his security cover has been downgraded just because he spoke on the farmers issue and the Centre’s Agniveer scheme.

Satya Pal Malik said that instead of Z+ security cover, a personal security officer (PSO) would now be deployed for his security.

“I would like to say that I am not joining any political party. I am not a political person. But if something happens to me, please come to Delhi,” Malik told India Today.

Maintaining that the security cover of NN Vohra, who served as JK Governor from 2008 to 2018, was still intact, Malik said he has written to the home ministry about the issue but no response has been received so far as to why his security cover was downgraded and what was the reason behind the move.

India Today reported that while the protocol is to provide lifetime security cover to presidents and prime ministers, security cover is provided to governors and lieutenant governors based on intelligence reports from security agencies.

Satya Pal Malik was the Jammu and Kashmir Governor in 2019 when the Article 370 of the Constitution was read down and the state was split into two union territories

Reacting to Malik’s claims, NC Vice president, Omar Abdullah said, “What goes around comes around, jaisa karoge vaisa bharoge. He messed with a lot of peoples’ security, including mine and of my senior colleagues.” Omar wrote on his Twitter.

Deeply hurtful: Omar Abdullah on BJP leader K S Eshwarappa’s comments about Azaan

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah Monday termed Karnataka BJP leader K S Eshwarappa’s comment about Azaan — the Muslim call for prayer — “deeply hurtful”.

Senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa on Monday said loudspeakers used for ‘Azaan’ disturb people, especially students preparing for examinations and patients in hospitals. He was responding to a query on his comments on Azaan made during the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Yatra on Sunday at Shantinagar, which has gone viral on social media.

Reacting to Eshwarappa’s comments, Abdullah tweeted, “Setting aside the deeply hurtful comments from the BJP for a moment, who will explain to this ignoramus that an Azaan is not a prayer meant for Allah but is, in fact, a call to prayer meant for people. While Allah hears and sees all, humans alas often don’t.”

  • Omar Abdullah Joins Chorus, Seeks Cancellation of Purported Contract to APTECH Ltd.; Condemns ‘Use of Force & Lathich

    [ad_1]

    Asif Iqbal

Srinagar, Mar 8 (GNS): After widespread resentment by job aspirants and condemnations from politicians cutting across party lines, Jammu Kashmir National Conference senior leader and vice-president Omar Abdullah has sought an immediate cancellation of purported contract to the Company for conducting exams.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Omar Abdullah wrote; “This contract must immediately be cancelled. What is the point of black listing company if they are going to be awarded plum contracts.”

“This contract is even more dangerous because it puts at risk the future of scores of aspirants who rely on JKSSRB to conduct recruitment exams”, reads the tweet.

In a subsequent tweet, Omar wrote; “I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the use of force & lathi charge against students & JKSSRB aspirants. These youngsters were exercising their democratic right to protest against the recent decision to engage a blacklisted firm #Aptech by JKSSRB.”

Notably, scores of JKSSRB aspirants assembled at Press Enclave here to register their protest against the purported grant of contract to APTECH Ltd. to conduct various exams in Jammu and Kashmir.

Many political leaders including Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Gani Lone have also condemned the purported contract by administration to the ‘blacklisted’ company. (GNS)

Anti-encroachment drive: Omar says bulldozer should be last resort

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti on Monday launched a frontal attack on the Union Territory administration’s anti-encroachment drive, with the National Conference leader saying that people should be allowed to prove their claim while the PDP leader said use of bulldozers has made Kashmir worse than Afghanistan.

At a press conference on Monday, Abdullah said the government should allow people to prove their claim on the lands they occupy and make the use of bulldozers its last resort.

The National Conference vice-president asserted that his party was not against those who have grabbed state land, but some proper procedure should be followed.

“In Jammu and Kashmir, there is chaos everywhere. Bulldozers are being sent everywhere to demolish houses, complexes and buildings. But nobody knows what is the procedure.

“My sister approached the high court with regard to the proposed demolition of the Gupkar house of Omar and was told by the government that the lists making rounds in the media are forged.

“No government is supposed to bring trouble for the people. Bulldozers should be the last resort. The government must issue proper notice to those who have grabbed state land and give them at least six weeks time to prove their claim on land under them and show the documents.

“In our case, my sister produced the documents before the high court that states that the lease of Gupkar house is still active and has some years to expire. Likewise, people should be given time to present the documents and let the revenue team verify the same. If after proper verification, land under anybody is found in illegitimate possession, then a bulldozer can be used.

“The government should also make public a genuine list of people who have occupied state land. It seems that the ongoing drive is aimed at creating a wedge between communities. This drive lacks proper procedures.

“Officials accompanying bulldozers at Nedous, told my relatives that they had pressure from the top and had to do something to show their bosses,” he said.

Omar alleged in many areas the ongoing demolition-cum-eviction drive is becoming a hub of corruption.

“I got many calls from several areas with people saying that they are being told to pay Rs 1 or 1.5 lakh to get their names removed from the list,” he said.

He said that National Conference MPs will try to raise the issue in the Parliament if they are given time to speak.

Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti told a separate media conference on Monday that the use of bulldozers has made Kashmir worse than Afghanistan.

She alleged that the anti-encroachment drive launched is being used as a weapon to suppress the people.

She said they are not against the government’s move to retrieve the land from land grabbers but the livelihood of people should not be affected.

Mehbooba also alleged that the drive is aimed at taking the shelters away from the people and the situation in Kashmir has turned worse than Afghanistan.

She also alleged that the government is trying to divert attention from the main issue of restoration of statehood, Article 370 and other things.

Make Bulldozer Last Resort, Give People Chance To Prove Their Claim: Omar to J&K Admin

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  Stating that the ongoing demolition drive going on across J&K has triggered a wave of frustration and chaos among people, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah Monday advocated that the government should make the bulldozer its last resort, give people a chance to prove their claim and issue proper notices to the people having illegal possession of State land. He was quick to add that the National Conference was not against those who have grabbed State land but “a proper procedure should be followed.”

“In J&K, there is chaos everywhere. Bulldozers are being sent everywhere to demolish houses, complexes and buildings. But nobody knows what is the procedure and on what basis this demolition drive is being conducted,” said Omar while addressing a press conference in Srinagar, as per news agency KNO.

He said his sister approached the High Court with regard to the proposed demolition of the Gupkar house of Omar and was told by the government before the Court that the list making rounds in the media are “forged.” “Given the government response in the court, I urge the government to make the genuine list of people who have grabbed State land public,” he said.

Omar suggested a slew of measures to the government with regard to the demolition drive. “No government is supposed to bring trouble for the people. Bulldozers should be the last resort. The Government must issue proper notices to those who, according to it, have grabbed State land and given them at least six weeks’ time to prove their claim on land under them and show the documents,” he said. “In our case, my sister produced the documents before the HC that states that the lease of Gupkar house is still active and has some years to expire. Likewise, people should be given time to present the documents and let the revenue team verify the same. If after proper verification land under anybody is found under illegitimate possession, then a bulldozer can be used for sure.”

Omar said that the government should also make a public “genuine list of people who have occupied State land.” “It seems that the ongoing drive is aimed at creating a wedge between communities. This drive lacks proper procedure,” he said.

He said in the case of demolition of NC leader Ali Muhammad Sagar, he found that no notice was served. “There is a procedure that if the person doesn’t receive the notice, the same is fixed on the front portion of the gate. Nowhere this is being done,” he said, adding, “Officials accompanying bulldozer at Nedous, told my relatives that they had pressure from the top and have to do something to show their bosses.”

Omar said in many areas the ongoing demolition-cum-eviction drive is becoming a “hub of corruption.” “I got many calls from several areas with people saying that they are being told to pay Rs 1 or 1.5 lakh to get their names removed from the list,” he said.

He said that NC MPs will try to raise the issue in the Parliament if they are given time to speak.

To a query that whey NC would approach the court on the issue, Omar said that he has suggested some measures to the government and that if the J&K administration fails to give positive response, they would surely consult lawyers and discuss the future course.

  • Omar, Mehbooba Acknowledge Musharraf’s Efforts To Settle Kashmir

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah on Sunday said former president Pervez Musharraf was the only Pakistani general who genuinely tried to address the Kashmir issue.

Expressing condolences, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said Musharraf was perhaps the only Pakistani General who “genuinely tried to address the Kashmir issue”. “He wanted a solution according to wishes of people of J&K & acceptable to India & Pak. Though GOI has reversed all CBMs initiated by him & Vajpayee ji, the ceasefire remains,” Mufti tweeted.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah posted a photo of him shaking hands with Musharraf and said he will always remember Musharraf as the only Pakistani leader willing to meet and engage with mainstream Kashmiri leaders from India, much to the horror of Hurriyat leaders.

“His solution for the “Kashmir issue” put the interests of the people of J&K at the forefront while being realistic that the framework must ensure that neither India nor Pakistan “lost face”. It didn’t happen & we are where we are today. May Allah grant him place in Jannat,” Omar tweeted.

  • House ousts Ilhan Omar from foreign affairs panel over Israel remarks

House ousts Ilhan Omar from foreign affairs panel over Israel remarks

    [ad_1]

Washington: Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota was fired from the Foreign Affairs Committee over past comments about Israel following the debate on the House Floor on Tuesday morning, according to the statement released by the House of Meeks.

“Today’s vote is not a reflection of Representative Omar, but on the rank hypocrisy of Republican leadership, which has used its power to exact revenge on their political opponents and, in the case of Omar, punish a Member to satisfy the extreme MAGA (Make America Great Again) wing of their party,” the statement read.

This decision came after Omar had made what Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) recently described as “repeated antisemitic and anti-American remarks” throughout her time as a member of the House. The resolution explicitly condemns Omar for using an antisemitic trope to suggest Israel’s allies in US politics were motivated by money rather than principle when she in 2019 tweeted, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” according to The Washington Post.

“If the purpose of this vote is to punish a Member for antisemitism, this resolution should not be aimed at a Representative who has apologized and learned from her mistakes, but those within their own party who’ve yet to apologize for their antisemitic remarks and actions. It should be condemning Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene – of ‘Jewish spacefarers fame – for spreading conspiracies that ‘Zionist supremacists” are flooding Europe with migrants to replace white populations. It should be condemning Rep. Miller for quoting Adol f Hitler in Congressional remarks, or Rep. Gosar for inviting a Holocaust denier to the State of the Union,” the statement added.

The statement also stated that this resolution should condemn Speaker McCarthy himself for his November 6th tweet accusing three Jewish men of buying the election, an antisemitic dog whistle about Jewish money buying elections.

“Not only does Representative Omar not deserve to be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as the only African-born and Muslim Member on the Committee, but her perspective and insight also make her an invaluable asset to the Committee’s important work. Rather than allowing Congress to do its job and legislate, the very purpose that people have sent us to Washington in the first place, Republicans are spending time stripping a Member of her Committee assignment on grounds they themselves can’t stand on,” the statement added.

Calling Omar’s past statements ‘unfit’, McCarthy tweeted, “Make it clear she is unfit to represent the U.S. on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She repeatedly used anti-semitic tropes. She described 9/11 by saying ‘some people did something’. She compared America and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban.”

lawmaker Ilhan Omar was arrested in July in Washington DC during an abortion rights protest in front of the Supreme Court. A video clip shared by Omar’s official Twitter handle showed the lawmaker pretending to be handcuffed as they were escorted away from the Supreme Court by police.

Earlier, controversial Omar visited Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Not known to take much interest in Pakistan or the Kashmir issue previously, United States’ Muslim lawmaker Omar paid a highly publicized visit to PoK and promised to ‘mainstream’ Pakistan’s concerns with India which has made a little impact over the years in Washington.

Omar received a red carpet-welcome. She met Sharif and his foreign minister Hina Khar but also held a much-hyped meeting with Khan, her original host.

  • Democratic Party representative Ilhan Omar ousted from US Congress panel

Democratic Party representative Ilhan Omar ousted from US Congress panel

    [ad_1]

New York: The US House of Representatives has ousted Ilhan Omar, a Democratic Party legislator from the influential Foreign Affairs Committee.

The House voted on Thursday mainly for her bigoted comments against Jews to remove her from the committee that she had used before to campaign against India.

The vote was on party lines, 218 to 211, in the House that was captured in last year’s election by the Republican Party.

The Democratic Party leadership and members were solidly behind her.

Fellow Democrat Pramila Jayapal, the leader of the Progressive Caucus who is also a critic of India, in a voice filled with emotion said that voting her out of the panel was an attempt to silence her “strong and necessary voice” and an act of revenge by the Republicans.

A defiant Omar said, “We didn’t come to Congress to be silent”, and added that despite the ouster, “my voice will get louder and stronger”.

Republican Mike Lawler countered that rhetoric aceleads to harm” and Omar “is being held accountable for her words and her actions”.

The US has seen a rise in attacks against and harassment of Jewish people and the Anti-Defamation League which monitors such incidents said they reached an all-time high with 2,717 incidents recorded in 2021.

Omar is a member of the left-wing wing of the Democratic Party and one of the four in the radical group called the “Squad”.

One of three Muslims in Congress, she represents a constituency in Minnesota with a large number of immigrants from Somalia like her.

Two months after a visit to Pakistan and to the part of Kashmir it occupies, she introduced in June last year a resolution in Congress to condemn India for what she termed “human rights violations and violations of international religious freedom”.

That resolution, which drew the support of 12 Democrats, failed to even come up for a vote.

During her visit to Pakistan, she had gone close to the Line of Control and complained that Kashmir was not “being talked about to the extent it needs to in Congress but also with the administration”.

She met with Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif, whose office said that he valued her “courage of convictions and her political struggle”.

Omar also voted in 2019 against a bill that would have cut for Indians the waiting time for permanent residency or Green Cards that stretches to several decades making the wait futile for many.

In one of the last bid attempts to save her from ouster, an op-ed was published in The New York Times highlighting her opposition to India in what the writer, New York City University Professor Peter Beinart, called an example of her asking “uncomfortable questions”.

In the encounter with Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman at a committee meeting cited in the article, Omar let loose a propaganda salvo likening the democratically elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who had ousted a democratically elected government in a military coup and killed thousands and tortured and detained tens of thousands.

She was critical of US policies to forge closer ties with India to counter China.

It was Omar’s record of anti-Semitism – a characteristic often shared by those who are also anti-India – that did her in when the protective mantle of the Democratic majority disappeared in the House.

Among her controversial statements, one said, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel”.

Alluding to supporters of Israel, she spoke of those with “the allegiance to a foreign country”.

She suggested that Jewish people were buying support for Israel in a tweet that said, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby”, which is a reference to $100 notes that carry the picture of Benjamin Franklin and anti-Semites the name to link it to the Biblical Jewish sacred figure.

She has also compared Israel to the Taliban in a statement with other Democrats.

The Democrats set a precedent when held the House majority by removing two Republicans, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar, from House committees accusing them of promoting violence.

At that time Kevin McCarthy, who is now the speaker, warned that he would remove Omar and another Democrat, Eric Swalwell from committees when his party controlled the House.

Last week, McCarthy removed from the House Intelligence Committee Swalwell and Adam Schiff, who had been its head when the Democrats controlled the Hous — leading to Jayapal’s accusation of “revenge”.

An alleged Chinese operative Fang Fang had placed an intern in Swalwell’s office and participated in raising funds for his campaign, which was a likely reason for his removal.

McCarthy alleged that Schiff had misused his office while heading the intelligence panel and created misinformation against Trump.
