Andhra official’s murder: Colleague, two others arrested

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday claimed to have cracked the mystery behind the murder of an Animal Husbandry Department official in Kadapa district with the arrest of three men, including an employee in the same department.

The body of Kadapa Animal Husbandry Deputy Director Chinna Acchanna, 58, was found at Guvvalacheruvu Ghat in Ramapuram Mandal of Annamayya district on March 24, about 12 days after he went missing.

The murder of a Dalit official in the Chief Minister’s home district had triggered a row with opposition parties and some Dalit groups staging protests.

A special panel of Kadapa and Annamayya district police cracked the case.

Kadapa’s Superintendent of Police K.K.N. Anburajan on Monday told reporters that Subhash Chandrabose, working in the same department as assistant surgeon, committed the crime with the help of two others.

According to police, Chandrabose had differences with Acchanna over some departmental issues and had developed a grouse after the latter had removed him from the Comprehensive Financial Management System (CFMC), stopped his salary, and later surrendered his post to the government.

Police also arrested Chenna Krishna and Balaji Nayak in the murder case.

The SP revealed that Chandrabose, along with two others, hatched the murder plot at a lodge in Porumamilla.

On March 12, when Acchanna was returning from prayers at a church, the accused kidnapped him and took him to Guvvalacheruvu Ghat in a car. They later murdered him near the Ghat. The assailants threw Acchanna’s mobile phone on a hill at another place.

The SP said the police cracked the case with the help of phone call data of the accused. The police investigations were on to know if any other person is involved.

The murder of the Dalit officials had sparked outrage.

Leaders of the Left parties, Jana Sena, Lok Satta and BSP and BC leaders had staged a protest in front of the Animal Husbandry Department office demanding authorities to speed up the enquiry and set up a committee headed by a sitting judge.

They alleged that the apathy of authorities led to the death of the Dalit employee. They further alleged that although Acchanna’s son complained to the police on March 12, the police didn’t take any action.

On March 12, Achanna’s son Klinter Chakraborty filed a complaint with the Kadapa One Town Police. He had also named a few colleagues of Acchanna for harassing him and passing casteist remarks.

Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga demanded a probe by a sitting judge. He alleged that police took no action on the complaint by Achanna’s family for 12 days. He said the police booked a case only after his body was found. He warned that if any attempt was made to shield the culprit, MPRS will launch a state-wide protest.

Video: UP man’s sarus crane taken away by forest officials

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: A unique friendship between a harvester operator in Uttar Pradesh and a sarus crane has finally ended after the wild bird was taken away by forest department officials.

DFO, Amethi, Dev Nath Shah, said that the sarus is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act and hence cannot be kept in captivity.

Mohammed Arif, 30, of Mandka village of Amethi’s Jamo development block had found the injured sarus in a field in February 2022 and brought it home.

He nursed the bird back to health and after the sarus became perfectly healthy, it refused to go back.

“Now, wherever I go, the sarus, whom everyone calls ‘Bachcha’, accompanies me. The bird takes a stroll when I am working and then we both have lunch together before returning home in the evening,” he had told reporters.

“People stare at us and take our photographs. Some even make reels but now I enjoy the stares.”

The bird, however, was not friendly with Arif’s family.

Arif’s wife Mehrunissa said: “In the absence of my husband, whenever I have gone to feed him, I have been attacked. Neither I, nor my two kids, dare go near the sarus.”

Wildlife experts had a different opinion of the incident and they advised caution.

Sarus cranes are regarded as the least social crane species. They can be very protective when nesting and are aggressive towards intruders.

Lucknow Divisional Forest Officer Ravi Singh said: “We have a system to protect and nurture it, but one should be cautious. You cannot touch its wings or hold it near you. No human touch is allowed.”

The sarus must be allowed to live in the wild and cannot be domesticated and allowed contact with humans. A diet of insects, fish and pila must be given to the bird, he added.

Arif is sad that his friend has been taken away but is also happy that the bird will now live in its natural habitat.

GHMC officials directed to regularly inspect hotels in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hotels in Hyderabad will soon be subject to increased scrutiny, as the Mayor of Hyderabad, G Vijaya Lakshmi, on Monday directed officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take measures to curb food adulteration and conduct regular inspections at hotels and eateries across the city.

The Mayor pointed out that despite asking for reports on daily inspections by Food Safety Wing, no one submitted them.

Now, the officials have been instructed to take action against establishments found to be selling adulterated or sub-standard food. By doing so, the GHMC hopes to improve the quality of food available in Hyderabad and ensure the health and safety of its residents.

It is a positive step as by conducting regular inspections at hotels and eateries, officials can ensure that standards are being met, and take action against any violations.

With increased inspections and stricter enforcement, the hotels and eateries will be left with no option but to pay attention to the quality of the food that is served in the establishments.

  • Telangana rains: KTR seeks crop damage report from officials

Telangana rains: KTR seeks crop damage report from officials

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: After the unexpected rains and hailstorm that devastated numerous sections of the Rajanna Sircilla district, Telangana IT and Municipal Administration minister KT Rama Rao directed authorities to submit agricultural damage reports.

KTR called district collector Anurag Jayanthi and asked him to submit a crop damage report.

The Minister directed that agricultural department personnel examine the damaged fields and write a report detailing the degree of the damage, the kind of crops destroyed by rains and hailstorms, and the number of farmers who lost their crops.

Crops cultivated on more than 20,000 acres of land were damaged following unseasonal rains, which coupled with hailstorms in various districts of Telangana.

Maize, green gram, papaya and mango and other crops, most of which were in flowering and ripening stages were destroyed by the hailstorm that lashed Telangana on Thursday and Friday.

According to Agriculture department officials, over 18,826 acres of maize, farmed by around 1,930 farmers, was damaged in the erstwhile Khammam district alone.

The horticulture officer in the Kothaguydam district, J Mariyanna said that papaya crops worth Rs 10 lakh were damaged while chilli and paddy farmers also suffered losses too.

In addition to the above, Mango trees were affected in the Madapur village of Ganneruvaram Mandal.

However, the damage was comparatively less in the Karimnagar district, with maize and paddy flattened in several places.

Horticulture officer Sunitha said that the intensity of the damage is heavy in Kohir Mandal.

Agriculture minister Niranjan Reddy along with Education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and Rythu Bandhu head Rajeshwar Reddy took off from Begumpet Airport to conduct a survey of the cultivated areas affected in Vikarabad district.

The minister reminded that scientists have been advising farmers to harvest their Rabi crop a month in advance to avoid the risk of their being damaged by hailstorms, a situation recurring every March and April.

Niranjan Reddy further said that farmers in some parts of Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Bodhan and Suryapet have been following the advice of scientists about advancing their crop cycle by a month and that in all workshops farmers were informed the same by agricultural officials.

“Cabbage, onion, maize, watermelon and capsicum crops were largely damaged in the 13 villages under the Mominpet and Marpally mandals of the Vikarabad district by the hailstorm,” added the minister.

Interestingly, Niranjan Reddy said that he was yet to receive reports of crop damage in other parts of the state.

  • Election officials confront a fractured future

Election officials confront a fractured future

    [ad_1]

Over the last year, five states with Republican chief election officials — Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia, Missouri and Florida — all left ERIC. Some states have used outwardly conspiratorial-minded reasons for leaving — citing a secretive plot by liberals to take control of voter rolls. Other complaints are more about the structure of the organization bubbling to the surface, which defenders of the organization say is being used as a false pretense to leave.

Underneath it all: ERIC — once something conservatives widely praised as a key “election integrity tool” — has suddenly come under fire from segments of the Republican base still animated by Trump’s 2020 loss.

Election officials in Ohio, Texas and Alaska — which also all have Republican chief election officials — have all also publicly signaled they are considering leaving the organization.

But not all Republicans are bolting. Notably, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger pledged his support for the organization after the recent departures.

“States claim they want to combat illegal voting and clean voter rolls — but then leave the best and only group capable of detecting double voting across state lines,” he tweeted, attaching a gif of Spongebob Squarepants punching himself in the face. By “reacting to disinformation they’ve hurt their own state and others while undermining voter confidence.”

The sudden exit of the three states earlier this month “caught me by surprise,” said Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, a Democrat, in an interview the day the three states dropped out, adding that there had been a bipartisan group working to try to find a common ground to preserve the membership.

At issue for many of the states considering leaving now is the structure of ERIC, which was founded over a decade ago by a handful of states that were roughly evenly split between Democratic and Republican-led states. ERIC, generally, assists states in maintaining voter rolls by helping election officials identify people who may have either moved or died, and requires states to conduct list maintenance by removing voters who aren’t eligible.

Broadly, the complaints have landed in two buckets: In addition to removing voters on the rolls, ERIC also requires member states to contact potentially eligible but unregistered voters to see if they would like to register, a practice some Republicans want to end because they say it is superfluous and a waste of resources.

The makeup of the organization’s board has also been a big point of contention. The board is largely composed of a voting representative, generally a senior election official, from each member state.

But the board also has two non-voting positions: One that is currently vacant and one filled by David Becker, a former Department of Justice attorney who was critical to setting up ERIC and is now the founder and executive director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research.

Since the 2020 election, Becker has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump’s sweeping lies about the security of the 2020 election, and has more broadly become a prominent commentator on America’s election laws and systems.

On the way out the door, several of the departing states publicly complained about Becker being a “partisan,” without directly naming him. It is a charge Becker pushed back against vociferously.

“There’s truth and there’s lies, and I will continue to stand for the truth and for the men and women — the civil servants around the country — who support elections and have run the most secure, transparent and verified elections in American history over the last few years,” he told a small group of reporters last week.

His organization also circulated a letter from prominent current and former Republican election officials and attorneys — including Raffensperger — earlier this week defending him, saying “extremists are targeting Becker and CEIR, seeking to undermine their work to support the professional civil servants who work to ensure secure elections.”

Nevertheless, Becker announced earlier this week that he would not accept renomination as a non-voting board member on Friday, decrying what he called “attacks fueled by disinformation” that have led some states to leave the organization.

One senior Republican election official who has remained broadly supportive of ERIC — and was granted anonymity to discuss sensitive internal dynamics — predicted that Becker not serving on the board could lower the temperature on Friday. Some of the states on the fence “are more comfortable staying in now and ERIC survives,” the official predicted — at least “until the next divisive issue” pops up.

Friday’s meeting will take on some controversial questions, including a proposal that would let member states pick and choose what they do with ERIC data. Another idea on the table to try to get members to remain would effectively tie two of ERIC’s reports — the one on eligible but unregistered voters and the “voter participation report,” which member states use to catch potential double voters — together, meaning states could opt-in to participating in either both of them or neither of them. It is unclear if either have the support to pass.

It is also unclear what the departing states will do to replace the gap in their list maintenance mechanics without ERIC. States have signaled they would try to move some operations in house. Crosscheck, an interstate program spearheaded by Kansas in 2005, eventually crumbled due to security vulnerabilities — but there are early discussions of a new competitor to ERIC.

In an interview with POLITICO the day his state announced it would be withdrawing, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said that there had been “conversations ongoing for a substantial period of time,” about either “creating a new system or [finding] a way states can do that solely in-house.” (He downplayed the possibility of a larger rival to ERIC being set up in a subsequent interview with The Kansas City Star.)

And in Texas — which is still a member of ERIC, although there is proposed legislation to drop out of the program — Secretary of State Jane Nelson recently shifted her elections director to “a newly-created position to develop and manage an interstate voter registration crosscheck program.”

“I think there would be a market for such a system,” Jason Snead, the executive director of the conservative Honest Elections Project, told reporters on Thursday. Snead added that he was “not aware of any project that appears on track” to do that yet.
