Shooter at Michigan State who killed three had no ties to school, officials say

    [ad_1]

The man who stormed on to Michigan State University’s campus and shot three students to death before killing himself bought the ammunition fired during the attack only a few hours earlier, investigators announced on Thursday.

Additionally, authorities said, the murderer had no personal or professional connection to the school, making his motive a mystery to them, despite his leaving a note which – among other things – complained about feeling rejected and not having sex during the last decade.

Such details were contained in a statement from the police force at the university in East Lansing, Michigan, summarizing what officers have learned about 43-year-old Anthony McRae since he went on campus and killed students Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner and Brian Fraser.

The killer loaded at least 13 handgun magazines with 9mm ammunition that he bought shortly before 4.50pm on 13 February. He put one magazine each in two handguns that he bought legally a month apart around the fall of 2021 but never registered, the police’s statement said. He used a Michigan identification as well as a social security card for the purchases, which he could make lawfully once he was discharged from a probation stint that he served after pleading guilty in 2020 to a misdemeanor weapons charge.

In part illustrating how much devastation a gun-wielding intruder can inflict even when not armed with a rifle, officers concluded that McRae fired about 20 times while murdering Anderson, Varner and Fraser as well as critically wounding five others at two separate buildings once he entered Michigan State’s campus at about 8.20pm. He left campus and eluded police until about 11.50pm, when officers found him in the adjacent city of Lansing, minutes after they publicly released a surveillance photo of him and asked for help in tracking him down.

McRae shot himself as police approached and died by suicide, according to authorities, who used spent shell casings to determine how many shots the killer fired. He had a backpack with 10 loaded magazines and nearly 140 rounds of loose ammunition, along with a total of more than 20 rounds in the magazines in his pistols as well as a magazine in his coat’s chest pocket.

Officers found a handwritten note on McRae which was headlined “Why? Why? Why? I’ve been hurt,” according to a copy of the screed that was released in the police’s statement on Thursday. The note claimed that McRae staged the attack in coordination with others, but state and federal investigators have not found any evidence to suggest that was true.

The note also mentioned fatigue at “being rejected” and complained about not having had sex in 10 years. It doesn’t explicitly describe McRae as a believer of the misogynist involuntary celibate – or “incel” – movement, which is primarily online and blames women for proponents’ lack of sexual and social status.

But the rhetoric in the parts of the note certainly calls to mind the movement, which experts have linked to dozens of killings and less lethal attacks in the last decade, including the stabbing and shooting rampage that left six people dead in Santa Barbara, California, in 2014.

Investigators were also careful to note that McRae had not attended Michigan State, had not known anyone at the campus and had not applied to work there in recent history. A relative later told CNN that McRae toward the end of his life had been living either at his father’s home or in local shelters for the unhoused.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“There is no conclusive motive as to why McRae targeted Michigan State University,” the statement from the school’s police force said.

The murders carried out by McRae came weeks before an intruder with two rifles and a handgun shot three nine-year-old students and three adult staffers to death at a Christian grade school in Nashville, Tennessee, on 27 March. Police shot dead the intruder in that case.

As of Thursday, the killings at Michigan State and Nashville’s Covenant school were among more than 170 mass shootings so far this year in the US, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The archive defines a mass shooting as any with four or more victims who are killed or wounded, not including the shooter.

The spate of mass shootings has reignited calls in some quarters for Congress to pass legislation aimed at holding firearms manufacturers liable for violence committed with their products as well as to require background checks for gun-related sales, among other measures.

  • ‘Good riddance’: Pentagon officials cheer Tucker Carlson’s ouster

‘Good riddance’: Pentagon officials cheer Tucker Carlson’s ouster

    [ad_1]

“Good riddance,” said a second DoD official.

Asked to respond to the news that DoD officials are pleased by his departure from Fox, Carlson responded by text message: “Ha! I’m sure.” He declined to comment further.

The tension between the former cable host and Pentagon leadership isn’t new. Carlson drew the ire of top DoD officials early in the Biden administration for personal attacks on a number of military leaders, as well as ridiculing the armed forces’ efforts to increase diversity. A slew of conservative leaders quickly followed Carlson’s lead, giving rise to a small but vocal minority that to this day continues to hammer DoD officials, saying they’re focusing personnel policies at the expense of preparing for war. The Pentagon says only a small percentage of troops’ time is spent on diversity training.

Most memorably, Carlson’s remarks disparaging female service members in March 2021 prompted a rare rebuke from then-Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby.

After President Joe Biden announced new efforts to recruit and keep women in the service — including designing new body armor, updating requirements for hairstyles and the nominations of two female generals to become combatant commanders — at a White House ceremony, Carlson accused the commander in chief of making a “mockery” of the troops.

“So, we’ve got new hairstyles and maternity flight suits. Pregnant women are going to fight our wars. It’s a mockery of the U.S. military,” he said.

In response, Kirby took a rare swipe at the Fox News host.

“What we absolutely won’t do is take personnel advice from a talk show host or the Chinese military,” Kirby said during a briefing with reporters, adding that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “shares the revulsion” of others who criticized Carlson’s remarks.

The comments yielded another rarity: The Pentagon’s in-house news service published an article focused entirely on the dust-up: “Press Secretary Smites Host That Dissed Diversity in U.S. Military.”

Kirby, who is now the top spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, declined to comment for this story.

The Fox News host targeted the Air Force in particular, calling Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, then-commander of Air Education and Training Command, a “doughy moron” for updating pilot tests to address systemic racism. He also mocked Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, head of the Air Force’s recruiting office, for arguing that the service’s pilot force needs to become more diverse.

Carlson “made a mockery” of the free press and “repeatedly cherry-picked department policies and used them to destroy DoD as an institution,” said the first senior DoD official.

One general who clashed with Carlson on social media during the episode, Maj. Gen. Patrick Donahoe, had his retirement delayed for several months while the Army conducted a probe of the exchanges.

While several military leaders sent messages in support of women in the services without naming Carlson, Donahoe tweeted that the host “couldn’t be more wrong.” That prompted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to send a letter to Austin accusing Donahoe and other military leaders of expressing partisan views.

The saga ended in January with no action taken against Donahoe, who tweeted Monday’s news about Carlson’s exit with the message, “I have thoughts.” Donahoe declined to comment for this story.

Joe Gould contributed to this report.

  • Taliban kill mastermind of 2021 Kabul airport bombing, say US officials

Taliban kill mastermind of 2021 Kabul airport bombing, say US officials

    [ad_1]

The Islamic State leader behind the 2021 Kabul airport suicide bombing that killed about 180 people including 13 US service members has been killed by the Taliban, according to US officials.

The IS leader, whose identity has not yet been released, was killed in southern Afghanistan in early April as the Taliban conducted a series of operations against the Islamic State group, according to one of the officials. The Taliban at the time were not aware of the identity of the person they killed, the official added.

The US military has informed families of the 11 marines, one sailor and one soldier killed in the blast during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Darin Hoover, the father of SSgt Darin Taylor Hoover, said the US Marines provided only limited information to him and did not identify the Islamic State leader or give the circumstances of his death.

Hoover is among a group of families that have kept in touch since the bombing, supporting one another and sharing information through a private group messaging chat.

Cheryl Rex, the mother of Marine L/Cpl Dylan Merola, who died in the blast, said it was through the chat group that they were informed late on Monday about the killing as they awaited official confirmation from US military officials.

Hoover said he and his son’s mother, Kelly Henson, have spent the past year and a half grieving the death of the 31-year-old US Marine Corps staff sergeant and praying for accountability from the Biden administration for the handling of the withdrawal.

The killing of the unidentified Islamic State group leader, Hoover said, does nothing to help them.

“Whatever happens, it’s not going to bring Taylor back and I understand that,” he said in a phone call. “About the only thing his mom and I can do now is be an advocate for him. All we want is the truth. And we’re not getting it. That’s the frustrating part.”

His son and the other fallen service members were among those screening the thousands of Afghans frantically trying on 26 August 2021 to get on to one of the crowded flights out of the country after the Taliban takeover.

The blast at Abbey Gate came hours after western officials warned of a major attack, urging people to leave the airport. But that advice went largely unheeded by Afghans desperate to escape the country in the last few days of an American-led evacuation before the US officially ended its 20-year presence.

The Afghanistan-based offshoot of the Islamic State, with up to 4,000 members, is the Taliban’s most bitter enemy and top threat militarily.

After the Trump administration reached a 2020 deal with the Taliban to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan and the Biden administration followed through on that agreement in 2021, there had been hope in Washington that the Taliban’s desire for international recognition and assistance for the country’s impoverished population might moderate their behavior.

But relations between the US and the Taliban have deteriorated significantly since they imposed draconian new measures banning girls from school and excluding women from working for international aid and health agencies.

The August 2021 pullout of US troops led to the swift collapse of the Afghan government and military, which the US had supported for nearly two decades, and the return to power of the Taliban. A review of the chaotic withdrawal released earlier this month largely laid blame on Trump, saying President Joe Biden was “severely constrained” by the decisions of his predecessor.

Atiq Ahmad’s brother-in-law suspended as govt doctor: Officials

    [ad_1]

Meerut: Slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad’s brother-in-law Akhlaq Ahmad, a government doctor posted in Meerut, was suspended on Tuesday by the Health Department, a senior official said.

Akhlaq Ahmad was arrested earlier this month for allegedly sheltering and providing money to the accused in the February 24 killing of Umesh Pal — a key witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

Meerut Chief Medical Officer Dr Akhilesh Mohan told PTI that Akhlaq Ahmad has been suspended on the orders of the government.

    MS Education Academy

He said Akhlaq was posted as a paediatrician at the Bhavanpur Community Health Centre at Meerut.

Akhlaq was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF) on April 1 from the Nauchandi and was taken to Prayagraj, Superintendent of Police, STF, Brijesh Singh had earlier said.

Akhlaq not only provided shelter to the accused in the Umesh Pal murder case but also gave them money when they reached Meerut after the murder, sources said.

Umesh Pal and his police security guards Sandeep Nishad and Raghvendra Singh were shot dead on February 24 outside Pal’s home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered at Dhoomanganj police station against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

  • UP: Arif’s Sarus is female, zoo officials look for mate

UP: Arif’s Sarus is female, zoo officials look for mate

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: After almost two and a half months of controversy, the Kanpur Zoo has finally declared that the sarus crane found by Arif of Amethi in an injured state in February 2022 and nurtured back to health, is a female.

The gender was revealed from the DNA report that arrived from a Secunderabad lab.

Zoo officials said that they are now trying to find a suitable mate for the sarus.

    MS Education Academy

Since it is a female, it is not likely that it will be released in the open.

The crane that had been living with Arif for the past one year, was taken from him by the forest department in March.

On April 16, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) ornithologist Dr Rajat Bhargava took out a small feather from the chest of the crane and had sent it to Secunderabad for DNA examination and its gender was determined.

As per the zoo authorities, it will now be paired with a male sarus crane from the zoo.

Samples of four other sarus cranes in the zoo have been sent to the Secunderabad lab for gender testing.

“After the report arrives, the female sarus crane will initially be kept in an enclosure next to a male crane for socialisation and the behaviour of the female and its male counterparts will be monitored for 15 days. After that, it will be moved into the male crane’s enclosure for mating,” said Kanpur Zoo director K.K. Singh.

  • Amritpal arrest: Was in touch with officials, did not sleep, says Punjab CM

Amritpal arrest: Was in touch with officials, did not sleep, says Punjab CM

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Hours after radical preacher and Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh was arrested by Punjab police, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said he was in touch with senior officials throughout Saturday night about the operation and asserted that those who try to disturb peace will face action as per law.

In a video message on Sunday, Mann also thanked the people of Punjab for their cooperation and said he does not want the youth to be misled by people with vested interests who run their shops by driving a campaign against the country.

Punjab’s land is fertile and anything can grow here, but “seeds of hatred will never grow nor will these be allowed to grow”, the chief minister emphasised.

    MS Education Academy

Mann said that he wants the youth of Punjab to hold degrees in their hands, appointment letters for occupying high posts and medals in top sporting events.

He said people had given the responsibility to the Aam Aadmi Party, which entrusted him with the duty, as the chief minister, to protect the life and property of the people.

“For that, we may have to take any action or take tough measures but not against any innocent,” he said, adding the law is taking its course.

Facing flak over the last month for the failure to arrest Amritpal, the chief minister stressed he did not want any bloodshed during the operation.

He said after he received information on Saturday night, “I did not sleep the whole night and I was in regular touch with senior officials over phone after every 15 minutes, half an hour to get information.”

“I wanted that entire thing (operation to arrest Amritpal) should be done in a peaceful manner,” he added.

Referring to the police crackdown on March 18 against Amritpal and his aides belonging to ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) outfit, Mann said in an attempt to arrest the radical preacher on that day, “maybe, bullets could have been fired. But we did not want any bloodshed”.

Amritpal, charged under the stringent National Security Act, was arrested in Rode village of Punjab’s Moga district on Sunday morning after police personnel surrounded him, leaving him with no way to escape. He was taken to Dibrugarh in Assam where nine of his associates are presently lodged at Dibrugarh Central Jail.

Security in and around the jail premises has been beefed up since March 19, when four members of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD).

In the video message, Mann said, “Today Amritpal Singh has been arrested. Those who will try to disturb peace and harmony and break the law of the country will face action as per law. We will not trouble any innocent. We do not do vendetta politics.

The arrest came more than a month after the state police launched the crackdown against him following the storming of the Ajnala police station by his supporters to secure the release of an arrested associate.

Recalling the February 23 Ajnala incident in which Amritpal and his supporters brought the Palki Sahib of Guru Granth Sahib, Mann said he had given strict instructions to the Director General of Police that utmost restraint has to be used and the ‘maryada’ (respect) of Guru Granth Sahib has to be preserved.

He said some police personnel sustained injuries in that incident, adding for “the holy Guru Granth Sahib, we can give any sacrifice”.

He appreciated the “utmost restraint” shown by police incident while dealing with the situation.

Mann said that sometime back, an attempt to disturb law and order and brotherhood came to the notice in Punjab. “Immediately, action was taken on March 18,” said Mann as he referred to the police crackdown.

“Some persons who play into the hands of country’s enemies and some anti-social elements were nabbed,” he said.

Amritpal Singh, who used to run an organisation that used to inspire youths to take up the gun or indulge in anti-social acts has also been arrested, he said.

“I want to thank the 3.5 crore people of Punjab that during the last 30-35 when this (crackdown) operation was going on, they maintained brotherhood and no untoward incident was reported,” he said.

Peace, brotherhood and harmony are very strong in the state, he stressed.

Mann reiterated that Punjabis have made maximum sacrifices in the country’s freedom struggle and brave Punjabis continue to safeguard the country’s frontiers.

A few days ago, five of the four soldiers who died in the Poonch attack belonged to Punjab, he said.

“Punjab has always led the country – be it the country’s freedom struggle or green revolution and Punjab will continue to lead. I want that the state should emerge at the top in various developmental parameters and then no one can stop our country from becoming number one in the world,” he said.

Mann said that on Sunday he spoke to deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police and people are carrying on with their normal routine. There is no report of any untoward incident, he said.

“I want to assure you that Punjab will continue to make progress, like it has been doing during the past year,” said Mann.

Telangana: Officials break open strongroom of Dharmapuri Assembly segment

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Officials in Telangana’s Jagtial district on Sunday broke open the strongroom of Dharmapuri Assembly constituency on the direction of the Telangana High Court, which is hearing a petition for re-counting of votes polled in 2018 elections.

The strongroom at VRK College of Engineering and Technology in Nookapally village of Jagtial was broken open in the presence of Jagtial district collector Shaik Yasmeen Basha and other top officials as its missing keys could not be traced by the Election Commission of India officials.

The officials will submit the records pertaining to the polling percentage and votes secured by all candidates to the High Court.

    MS Education Academy

The court had earlier directed the Election Commission to furnish CCTV footage and other records pertaining to counting of votes.

On April 10, the district collector and other officials had reached the strongroom to open it on the High Court’s order. However, the Election Commission officials found the keys missing. After the High Court was informed about the same, it directed officials to break open the room.

The Election Commission officials will submit 17A and 17C documents to the High Court, which is hearing petition Congress candidate Aduluri Laxman Kumar for recounting of votes.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate Koppula Eswar was declared elected by 441 votes. Eswar is now a minister in the State Cabinet.

Eswar and Laxman secured 70,579 votes and 70,138 respectively.

Alleging that there were irregularities in the counting of votes, Laxman had filed a petition for setting aside Eswar’s election.

Last year, the Supreme Court had dismissed Eswar’s petition seeking a stay on the proceedings in the High Court

During the hearing of the case in the High Court, Laxman’s counsel had pointed out discrepancies. According to him, the returning officer in his report to the chief electoral officer said that the number of votes in all 269 polling stations was 1,65,209 which accounts for 79.96 per cent of polling. However, he claimed that as per the information furnished by authorities to them under the RTI Act, 1,65,341 votes were polled and the polling percentage was 80.02.
