Karnataka Cong alleges CMO calling returning officers to reject its candidates’ applications

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Congress on Saturday alleged Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s office is calling up the returning officers of various districts to find defects in the applications filed by its candidates and rectify the mistakes in those of BJP nominees contesting the May 10 Assembly election.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief D K Shivakumar demanded that the Election Commission should investigate the matter and summon the call details of the CMO to ascertain the truth.

“A major conspiracy is going on to reject the applications of the Congress candidates,” the party’s Karnataka unit chief said in a press conference.

    MS Education Academy

He charged that some applications of the BJP candidates, for instance in Saundatti Yellamma constituency, are defective but the CMO “directly called the officer and directed him to make changes”.

“There is no need to elaborate how a big team is trying to reject (my) application. You all have been informed about it,” the Congress state chief said.

Shivakumar said he has filed the election form 10 times yet “when they can do this to me then imagine what they can do to the ordinary candidates”.

“Pressure is being built on all the returning officers. There is rampant misuse of power. The EC must take note of it. The CMO must be investigated,” the Kanakapura candidate demanded.

On Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje’s charge that the Congress was collecting ‘bribe’ from those candidates who have been given ticket to contest the Assembly election, Shivakumar retorted that his party was not collecting ’40 per cent commission’.

“We are only raising building fund for our party. We are collecting Rs 2 lakh from general candidates and Rs 1 lakh from SC/ST candidates,” Shivakumar explained.

The opposition Congress is locked in a tussle with the ruling BJP to wrest power in Karnataka with the JD(S) also an important player as polling is just weeks away.

Karnataka will vote in a single phase on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 1

Viveka’s murder a case study for police officers: Chandrababu Naidu

    [ad_1]

Kadapa: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national President N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Tuesday that the murder of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s paternal uncle Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy is a case study for police officers.

The former Chief Minister felt that those who murdered Vivekananda Reddy should be punished sooner than later.

Addressing the TDP Zone-5 meeting at Kadapa, he said that it is the responsibility of everyone to punish in the people’s court those who resort to killings and try to escape from punishment. “How peace rallies can be taken out when those who are involved in murder are summoned for inquiry,” the TDP supremo asked, referring to a rally organised in Pulivendula town on Friday when Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy was arrested in the case.

    MS Education Academy

He said that the entire murder case of the brother of a former Chief Minister, who is also a former MP and MLA and the paternal uncle of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, is a mystery.

“When the daughter of the victim wanted a post-mortem on the body, then the blame was passed on me in the name of Narakasura Raktha Charitra. Every attempt was made to escape from the murder case even by resorting to caste politics and this culture started only in Pulivendula,” Naidu said.

Recalling how the gag order was obtained from the court and how a CBI probe was demanded into the murder, the former Chief Minister said that ultimately Jagan Mohan reddy used this in the last Assembly polls as a weapon besides the “chicken knife” drama. Now those involved in the murder are stooping so low that they are even threatening the CBI, he remarked.

Terming Jagan Mohan Reddy “a demon haunting the state”, Naidu claimed that he is minting money in the name of pressing buttons. The total amount of corruption of Jagan Mohan Reddy, his cabinet ministers and his party MLAs is a whooping Rs 4 lakh crore, the TDP supremo alleged and said that the financial burden imposed on the people in the past four years is Rs 5 lakh crore while the state’s total debt burden is Rs 10 lakh crore.

Chandrababu Naidu also said that after the Legislative Council polls, the TDP has been marching ahead in an excellent manner in 108 Assembly segments.

  • Ohio officers won’t be charged in shooting of Jayland Walker

Ohio officers won’t be charged in shooting of Jayland Walker

    [ad_1]

But the officers, not knowing Walker left his gun in the car, believed he was going to fire again at them, Yost said. Yost said it is critical to remember that Walker had fired at police, and that he “shot first.”

Walker’s death last June sparked protests in Akron after police released body camera footage showing him dying in a hail of gunfire. Activists, including from the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., spoke about his death. The NAACP and an attorney for Walker’s family called on the Justice Department to open a federal civil rights investigation.

President Joe Biden responded to the shooting during a trip to Ohio last summer by saying the DOJ was monitoring the case.

The state investigation found that police first saw Walker driving with a broken taillight and a broken light on his rear license plate, but they decided not to follow him. They saw him 10 minutes later at the same intersection and decided to pursue him for the equipment violation, Yost said.

Police said Walker refused to stop and then fired a shot from his car 40 seconds into the pursuit.

Officers chased the car on a freeway and city streets until Walker bailed from the still-moving vehicle and ran into a parking lot where he was killed while wearing a ski mask, body cam video showed. Authorities said he represented a “deadly threat.” A handgun, a loaded magazine and a wedding ring were found on the driver’s seat of his car.

Dash-cam video from a police cruiser captured images of Walker firing the gun from his car, said Anthony Pierson, an assistant state attorney general. Walker had no criminal history and had never fired a gun until he went to a shooting range with a friend in early June, Pierson said.

Walker’s family called it a brutal and senseless shooting of a man who was unarmed at the time and whose fiancee recently died. Police union officials said the officers thought there was an immediate threat of serious harm and that their actions were in line with their training and protocols.

Walker had been grieving his fiancée’s recent death but his family had no indication of concern beyond that, a family representative previously said.

Pierson wouldn’t speculate about Walker’s state of mind that night and said there was no direct evidence that he was suicidal.

“That night he encountered the police he wasn’t acting himself,” Pierson said. “By all accounts he was a good person, a good man.”

Blurry body camera footage released last summer did not clearly show what authorities say was a threatening gesture Walker made before he was shot.

The eight officers, whose names have been withheld from the public, initially were placed on leave, but they returned to administrative duties 3 1/2 months after the shooting.

Yost would not release the names of the officers, saying it was his office’s policy not to release the names of people who were not charged.

Attorneys for the eight officers released a statement calling the incident a tragedy for the entire community, including Walker’s family and all of the officers who were involved. “A split-second decision to use lethal force is one that every police officer hopes he or she will never be forced to make,” the statement said.

A county medical officer said the autopsy found no illegal drugs or alcohol were detected in Walker’s body.

After taking over the investigation last summer at the request of Akron police, prosecutors with the Ohio attorney general’s office presented the case to the grand jury.

City leaders have been meeting with community leaders, church groups, activists and business owners ahead of the grand jury meeting while also preparing for potential protests.

The city created a designated protest zone downtown outside the city hall building, where workers put plywood over the first-floor windows. There’s also temporary fencing around the county courthouse and many businesses boarded up their windows.

The city’s school district canceled classes on Tuesday in the wake of the grand jury announcement.

Less than 24 hours before the chase, police in neighboring New Franklin Township had tried to stop a car matching Walker’s, also for unspecified minor equipment violations. A supervisor there called off the pursuit when the car crossed the township’s border with Akron.

Ensure appointment of child marriage prohibition officers: SC to Centre

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre to ensure appointment of child marriage prohibition officers in every district and directed it to specify the policy steps it has taken for enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala asked the Ministry of Women and Child Development to furnish data after collecting them from all states on the number of cases registered under the 2006 law and steps taken for its enforcement.

“The Union government shall engage with state government and ensure appointment of child marriage prohibition officers in every district and that they are not given multifarious duties,” the bench said.

The top court was hearing a plea filed by NGO ‘Society for Enlightenment and Voluntary Action’ which has claimed the Act was not being enforced in letter and spirit.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, said a bill was moved in Parliament seeking raising the marriageable age of women to 21 years. The bill is currently before a select committee, the ASG said.

  • Compensate woman for illegal detention for a day, SC to Maha Police officers

Compensate woman for illegal detention for a day, SC to Maha Police officers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked police officers in Maharashtra to compensate a woman for keeping her in illegal detention despite she being granted interim protection and two weeks to surrender it.

A bench of Justices S.K. Kaul and A. Amanullah observed that the woman, an accused in a criminal case, got the interim protection on November 17, 2021 and the apex court had granted her two weeks’ to surrender and apply for regular bail.

Expressing discontent with the illegal detention of the woman, the bench noted that the court had given interim protection to the petitioner and despite the same, she was taken into custody.

    MS Education Academy

The petitioner had submitted before the court that she had also shown the court’s order to the police, though she was bailed out next but she was in custody for a day.

The top court ordered that the petitioner should be compensated with Rs 15,000 for the illegal detention for one day which will be shared by the two police officers and the payment to be made within a period of two weeks.

The bench noted that two police officers filed their affidavit seeking to express unconditional apology. However, the bench said that behaviour of the officers was in the teeth of the court’s order and cautioned the police officers to be careful in future.

The top court passed the order on a contempt plea filed by the woman against two police officers. In a previous order passed in January this year, the bench had noted petitioner’s counsel arguments that despite the November 2021 order, within two days the woman was arrested from a hospital where she was working as a nurse.

The bench noted that the police officers were ready to compensate the woman from their own pocket in the matter.

In 2021, the woman had moved the apex court challenging the Bombay High Court order, passed in August 2021, refusing to entertain her plea for anticipatory bail in the case.
