Spartz won’t seek elected office in 2024

    [ad_1]

The Indiana Republican only arrived on Capitol Hill in 2021, but she’s cut a peripatetic path since getting there. Just last month, she voted “present” multiple times as Kevin McCarthy struggled to win sufficient support for the speakership, a switch after initially supporting him.

Then she issued a strong statement opposing the removal of House Democratic members from their panels, citing due process concerns, before backtracking amid party leaders’ non-binding concessions and supported yanking Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The first Ukrainian-born lawmaker elected to Congress also drew cringes from within her own party after intense criticisms of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid the country’s struggle against a Russian invasion. Many feared Spartz’s comments would be used to undermine the U.S.-Ukraine alliance at a crucial point in the conflict.

Spartz has also drawn scrutiny for her poor staff retention rate. Several of her former aides described to POLITICO a hostile work environment where the boss wielded an unpredictable and volatile temper.

Her district, Indiana’s 5th, was made significantly more Republican-friendly during redistricting, so the GOP will be favored to retain it next fall.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James says former President Donald Trump and three of his adult children lied in the answers they submitted to the court in response to James’ $250 million lawsuit accusing them and the Trump Organization of large-scale financial fraud.

Both the former president his children “falsely deny facts they have admitted in other proceedings,” deny knowing things “ that are plainly within their knowledge,” and use defenses “repeatedly rejected by this Court as frivolous and without merit,” Kevin Wallace, senior enforcement counsel in the Attorney General’s office, said in a letter to New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron.

James’ office is seeking a pre-trial conference to work out fact from fiction and to “sanction Defendants and their counsel,” for the false claims, according to the letter.

  • BRS to raise misuse of Governor’s office in Parliament

BRS to raise misuse of Governor’s office in Parliament

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will work together with other opposition parties to expose the “anti-people” policies of the BJP-led Union government and also raise the issue of “misuse” of the office of Governor during the ensuing Budget session of the Parliament.

The decision was taken at the BRS Parliamentary Party meeting here on Sunday, which was presided over by party President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly called, made it clear that the “undemocratic” politics of the Centre should be brought to light in all the possible parliamentary democratic ways. In this direction, he made it clear that the BRS should join other parties which come together and expose the Centre in both houses of Parliament.

The BRS chief alleged that the BJPA governmentA at the Centre is undermining the federal spirit and causing trouble to the states in many ways.

“This issue should also be raised in the parliament. The Centre should be forced to tell the nation what is the reason behind creating financial and other obstacles to Telangana which is running on the path of progress. The Central government is also misusing the Governors’ system,” he said.

“It is undemocratic that the Centre is using the governors as their henchmen to weaken the states. The BRS MPs should strongly oppose in both Houses the evil policies of using the system of Governors, who are supposed to be negotiators between the Centre and States while performing their Constitutional duties, for their own political interests. The Governors are deliberately delaying the decisions taken by the state Cabinet, the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council as well. BRS MPs should expose the Centre’s attitude and undemocratic policies of the Governors, who are trying to obstruct state governance and development, in the Parliament,” he said.

The party expressed serious concern that the situation in the country is deteriorating day by day due to the unfortunate policies adopted by the Modi government.

KCR directed the party MPs to expose the Centre which is pursuing “anti-people” policies. He told the MPs that the mistakes committed by the Centre should be brought to the attention of the country by acting strategically and raising the voice on the issues relating to people of the state as well as the country during the Parliament session.

The meeting, which lasted for more than four hours and discussed several issues, expressed concern that the negligent and perilous policies followed by the Centre are causing immense damage to the future of the country.

“The policies pursued by the BJP led Union government have become obstacles to the development of the country’s integrity. This is unfortunate. The Centre is giving arbitrarily the hard earned people’s money to their corporate friends. The Central government is showing special affection towards its friendly corporate forces and waived off loans worth lakhs of crores of rupees. In public sector companies like LIC, shares are being transferred to big businessmen like Adani aimlessly,” said KCR.

“The country is watching the hollowness of the companies which are losing lakhs of crores of rupees on a daily basis as the value of their shares plunged suddenly. It is clear that their profits are not all wealth. The Centre is making irreparable loss by privatising all the country’s assets to contribute to such financial irregularities. Both the houses of Parliament should raise their voices against the dangerous economic policies followed by the Central government which is helping the private sector to gain profits and people bear the brunt of losses. BRS MPs should strongly condemn the attitude of the BJP-led Central government which is harming the interests of the people of the country,” he added.

KCR told MPs that for the future of the country, BRS MPs should come together with MPs from every party to fight against the BJP government at the Centre in Parliament on public issues.

“The prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and other essential goods are increasing abnormally. The Center is not serious on the common man’s life which is burdened day by day by rising prices,” he said, directing the MPs that the sufferings and hardships of the common people across the country should be brought to the attention of the people of the country through both houses of the Parliament.

The BRS chief also asked the MPs to raise the issue of unemployment which is increasing by the day.

He also alleged that the Central government is not serious on the promises made to Telangana under the AP Reorganisation Act and the MPs should raise their voice in this regard.

Parliamentary party leaders K. Keshavrao (Rajya Sabha), Nama Nageshwar Rao (Lok Sabha), MPs Joginapalli Santosh Kumar, K.R.A Suresh Reddy, Badugula Lingaya Yadav, Vadiraju Ravichandra, Bandi Parthasarathy, Deevakonda Damodar Rao, Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, BB Patil, Manne Srinivas Reddy, Maloth Kavita Naik, Pasunuri Dayakar, Borlakunta Venkatesh and Potuganti Ramulu participated in the meeting.

  • Documentary row: Hindu Sena puts up anti-BBC placards outside organisation’s Delhi office

Documentary row: Hindu Sena puts up anti-BBC placards outside organisation’s Delhi office

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Hindu Sena on Sunday allegedly put up anti-BBC placards outside the UK-headquartered broadcaster’s office on Kasturba Gandhi Marg here over its documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Placards reading “BBC is a threat to India’s Unity and it should be Banned” and “BBC stop tarnishing India’s image. BBC leave India” were put up outside the main gate of the BBC office amid a row over the controversial documentary.

The placards were removed by the police.

Hindu Sena members also accused the media organisation of conspiring to tarnish and malign the image of both India and Prime Minister Modi.

The BBC is a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation and the channel should be banned in India immediately, Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta said.

He recalled that the BBC was banned in India during the tenure of Indira Gandhi as prime minister. The ban was lifted after the organisation submitted an apology, Gupta claimed.

When asked, a senior police officer said, “Our patrolling team, which was present nearby, spotted the placards outside the BBC office and removed those.

“Some of them (Hindu Sena members) were still trying to display the placards elsewhere but they could not due to police presence and fled.”

Legal action has not been initiated as no complaint was received, he said.

Students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia held protests here during the past week after the varsity authorities refused to allow screening of the documentary.

The government had last week directed Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question”. The Union Ministry of External Affairs has called the documentary a “propaganda piece” lacking objectivity and reflecting a colonial mindset.

However, opposition parties have slammed the government’s move to block access to the documentary.

  • Day After Court Directions, NIA Attaches Hurriyat Office In Srinagar

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A day after Delhi Court ordered the attachment of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) office at Rajbagh, the slueths of National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sunday attached the Hurriyat office.

“The NIA team arrived at Rajbag and attached the Hurriyat office,” news agency KNO quoted officials as having said.

Earlier, on Sturday in an, order, Shaliender Malik, additional sessions judge, New Delhi district, had said the immoveable property i.e. building office of All Parties Hurriyat Conference is ordered to be attached.

The Court had said that the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act-1967 does not in any manner hinder powers of court to attach any such property of which accused is facing trial under the UAPA of which he may be partly owner.

The court, however, had added that the attachment in itself does not mean that there is any pre-trial conclusion regarding that property.

The Court further said that among the different allegations and evidence, it was also the case that office of APHC was the place where meetings held to strategize different protests, funding activities of stone pelting on security forces, recruiting of unemployed youths to carry out unlawful activities as well as terrorist activities to create an unrest in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir to wage war against the Government of India.

“In such situation taking into consideration the serious nature of the allegations as against A-5 itself, the fact that he is part owner of the property in question, cannot be a reason for not attaching the property when it is not even made clear as to who others were co-owners of that property,” the court had said.

The NIA had moved an application seeking passing of an order for attachment of building office of All Parties Hurriyat Conference situated at Raj Bagh, Srinagar.

Srinagar, Jan 28: A Delhi Court has ordered attachment of office of All Parties Hurriyat Conference at Raj Bagh, Srinagar.

  • Court Orders Attachment Of Hurriyat Office In Srinagar

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A Delhi Court has ordered the seizing of All Parties Hurriyat Conference’s (APHC) office in Srinagar’s Rajbagh area in a UAPA case probed by National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Hurriyat leader Nayeem Ahmad Khan.

Khan, who has been in judicial custody since August 14, 2017, has been accused of “creating unrest” in the Kashmir valley by the National Investigation Agency of India, LiveLaw reported. He was denied bail in December last year.

Additional Sessions Judge Shailender Malik of Patiala House Courts passed the order on NIA’s plea under section 33(1) of UAPA to attach the office.

“In view of the above reasons, the immovable property i.e. building office of All Parties Hurriyat Conference situated at Raj Bagh, Srinagar which was carlier used as a office of APHC is ordered to be attached. Necessary legal process be carried out in this regard,” the court said.

NIA told court that the property is partly owned by Khan along with his associates.

The office situated at Rajbagh was used to strategize different protests, funding activities of stone pelting on security forces, recruiting of unemployed youths to carry out “unlawful activities as well as terrorist activities” to create an unrest Jammu and Kashmir to wage war against Government of India, according to the NIA.

It was submitted by Khan’s counsel that the office was only partly owned by him whereas other co-owners were not given any notice before attachment.

Noting that the property was being used as an office of APHC, the court said that there are many other accused persons besides Khan who were affiliated to the office, who are also facing prosecution in the matter.

The court also noted that the evidence collected during investigation was duly examined at the stage of framing of charge by a predecessor court which concluded to frame charges against Khan and other accused persons.

“In that process it is needless to observe that in case any other person who claims to be co-owner and consider that such process of attachment is not proper, can avail legal right in accordance with law,” the court said.

The court said that attachment of a property in itself does not amount to any bearing upon trial and that the cannot be in any manner be considered as “pre-trial conclusion” or findings of punishment or offence against the accused.
“It simply means the property of the accused which may like to be forfeited to the State in case of him being convicted of offence of terrorist activities,” the court said.

It also said that section 33 of UAPA does not hinder the powers of court to attach any such property which may be partly owned by accused.

“In such situation taking into consideration the serious nature of the allegations as against A-5 itself (Khan), the fact that he is part owner of the property in question, cannot be a reason for not attaching the property when it is not even made clear as to who others were co-owners of that property,” LiveLaw.in quoted the court as having said.
