A far-right extremist who accidentally set off a “fireball” in his own kitchen while experimenting with explosives has been convicted of terrorism offences.

Vaughn Dolphin, who had spoken of his desire for ethnic minorities to be shot, was found guilty on a series of charges after a jury viewed videos and incriminating conversations on social media.

In one self-filmed video, he was seen in a gas mask surrounded by a choking cloud of smoke after attempting to blend a blast mixture in a saucepan on a domestic hob.

Dolphin spoke of causing an “awesome fireball” in videos posted on far-right chatrooms, in which he complained: “Ah the bastard fucking mixture set itself prematurely, oh my God. Next time I’ll do this outside, but, ah well, you live and learn.”

When arrested in June 2022 at his grandfather’s home, the 20-year-old college student told police: “I’m not a terrorist, OK? I have an interest in chemicals and military memorabilia, that’s all.”

Dolphin, from Walsall in the West Midlands, was convicted at Birmingham crown court on two charges of possession of explosives, including nitrocellulose, discovered during a raid on his home. He was also found guilty of having an unlicensed firearm that he had made from a length of aluminium tube and on terrorism charges.

An encrypted USB thumb-drive found on his bedroom shelf contained a series of DIY guides on constructing a shotgun, making homemade plastic explosives and conducting arson attacks.

The encrypted files were found in electronic folders with the name “Boogaloo”, which the prosecution claimed was a “significant” as it was used as a reference to “race war” in far-right circles.

Dolphin had also written on extremist channels on the social media platform Telegram of creating a handheld “cannon”, and about mixing gunpowder. He claimed he would do “something that would make [the Unabomber US terrorist] Ted Kaczynski blush”.

He had further ranted about his hatred of Muslims on one Telegram chatgroup and he was found to have a significant collection of material relating to the Nazis, including his own body armour in which he slid a plate bearing the symbol of the SS.

Others on the Telegram channels had warned Dolphin that he risked being arrested by the “Feds”, in what appeared to be a reference to the police. In response, Dolphin had said he would be safe as he had encrypted the incriminating material. He claimed he could argue that the explosive ingredients he had purchased were for “gardening” purposes.

Dolphin, who shrugged his shoulders while keeping his hands in his pockets as the verdicts were read out, will be sentenced on 11 May.

Ch Supt Mark Payne, the head of West Midlands counter-terrorism unit, said: “This was clearly a young man with a really dangerous mindset. I’ve got no doubt at all that his intent was to cause harm.”

Hyderabad youths held for driving dangerously – Know penalty for such offences

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police recently took action against six youngsters who were driving their vehicles dangerously at Malakpet.

These youngsters were performing daredevil stunts on their two-wheelers, all for the sake of the social media craze.

They were shooting videos of their acts on their cellphone and later uploading them on social media. After receiving complaints, police took action against them for reckless behaviour.

After coming to know about the incident, the police analysed CCTV cameras to identify the youth. Soon after identifying them, the police seized three vehicles from them.

The police called the youngsters along with their parents and counselled them about the dangers of reckless driving and the consequences of such behaviour.

Penalties for reckless driving in Hyderabad

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, driving a vehicle dangerously at high speed, rash and negligent driving may attract a fine of Rs. 1000 as per section 184(b). A fine of Rs. 1000 can also be imposed on those who drive a vehicle dangerously, posing a threat to the lives of other people.

Apart from these sections, section 279 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) deals with situations where a person drives a vehicle dangerously, posing a threat to the lives of other people. Under this section, the penalty will be decided by the court, which can be much more severe than the fines levied under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The penalties for reckless driving and dangerous driving must be stringent enough to deter people from engaging in such behaviour. Driving dangerously not only puts the lives of the driver at risk but also endangers the lives of other people on the road.

  • BBC cannot hide ‘economic offences’ under garb of freedom of expression: BJP

BBC cannot hide ‘economic offences’ under garb of freedom of expression: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP said on Wednesday the BBC or any other organisation cannot hide their “economic offences” under the garb of freedom of expression.

The British broadcaster is under the Income-Tax department probe for alleged tax avoidance by underreporting income and these are serious offences, BJP’s information technology department head Amit Malviya said.

The BBC has to abide by Indian laws to operate in the country, he said.

The BJP reaction came following the British government’s strong defence of the BBC and its editorial freedom in Parliament after the Income Tax department’s survey operations on the media corporation’s New Delhi and Mumbai offices last week.

The BBC has said it is fully cooperating with the investigation and hopes to have the situation resolved as soon as possible.

Malviya claimed that the international broadcaster has a chequered past and accused it of trying to meddle in the internal affairs of democracies, including India.

He said that it once showed Russian tanks in Chechnya as Indian tanks in Kashmir to “suit its propaganda”.

Malviya said India is the “mother of democracy” and has a strong judicial system to ensure freedom of expression.

The I-T department had said in a statement following the survey that the income and profits disclosed by the organisation’s units were “not commensurate with the scale of operations in India”.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) junior minister responded to an urgent question raised in the House of Commons in London on Tuesday to say that the government cannot comment on the allegations made by the I-T department over an ongoing investigation but stressed that media freedom and freedom of speech are essential elements of robust democracies.
