Malda: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday maintained that she would “never allow” implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

“No one has to worry about citizenship. That (NRC) won’t happen here (in West Bengal). I am the guarantor,” Banerjee said at an administrative review meeting here.

The CM had earlier, too, asserted that she would not allow NRC in her state.

Banerjee also advised people to exercise voting rights and ensure that their names appear on the voters’ list.

“You all must make sure to vote I would also advise people to update their Aadhaar card on time and in every 10 years,” she added.

Chidambaram cautions people of Karnataka against Uniform Civil Code, NRC

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday cautioned the people of Karnataka against the BJP poll manifesto promising Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) by calling these topics “a pernicious agenda” of the ruling party to divide and polarise the state.

BJP’s election manifesto for Karnataka released on Monday said: “We will implement the UCC in Karnataka based on the recommendations given by a high-level committee which is to be constituted for the purpose. We will introduce the National Register of Citizens in Karnataka and ensure speedy deportation of all illegal immigrants in the state.”

Addressing a press conference here, Chidambaram termed the UCC and NRC as the “pernicious agenda that is creeping into the south of India” and said they (BJP) are looking for a gateway in Karnataka”.

The former Union minister also said he was not worried about anything else in the BJP’s manifesto as “those are irrelevant”.

“I am concerned deeply about the promise of the UCC and the NRC. This will divide Karnataka, this will polarise Karnataka. This will create social conflict,” he said.

According to Chidrambaram, the BJP will try to enter other states including Tamil Nadu (using UCC and NRC).

“We will fiercely resist these pernicious ideas entering Tamil Nadu. But my humble appeal to the people of Karnataka is fiercely resist and stop the entry of this sinister, pernicious agenda into Karnataka,” the Congress leader asserted.

NRC finds place in BJP’s Karnataka manifesto – Know what it is

    [ad_1]

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its manifesto for the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections on Monday. The document, titled “Praja Pranalike’ 2023”, includes 16 top promises, and among them, the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Karnataka are controversial.

The manifesto was released by BJP President JP Nadda in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his predecessor BS Yediyurappa. The party has also announced that it will ensure the speedy deportation of all illegal immigrants in the state.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Nadda have held roadshows in the state as part of the party’s campaign.

Karnataka is scheduled to go to the polls on May 10, with the counting of votes set to take place on May 13. As the elections draw near, the BJP is expected to push for its promises, including the implementation of the NRC.

    What is NRC?

The NRC is a register of all Indian citizens, whose creation was mandated by the 2003 amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1955. It was first implemented in Assam in 2013-14.

The NRC includes persons who satisfy at least one of the listed conditions, such as

    1. Those whose name appeared in the NRC of 1951 or Electoral Rolls up to March 24, 1971,
    2. Those who can provide any one of the admissible documents issued up to March 24, 1971,
    3. Descendants of the above persons.
    4. All members of the Tea Tribes are also included.

While updating the NRC in Assam, the cut-off date was March 24, 1971, whereas, in the case of other parts of India, there is no such date.

    Citizenship by Birth in India

As per the Indian constitution, all persons born in India between January 26, 1950, and July 1, 1987, automatically received citizenship by birth, regardless of the nationalities of their parents.

From July 1, 1987, until December 3, 2004, children born in the country received Indian citizenship by birth if at least one parent was a citizen.

After December 3, 2004, citizenship by birth is granted only if both parents are Indian citizens or if one parent is a citizen and the other is not considered an illegal migrant.

The inclusion of the NRC in the BJP’s Karnataka manifesto has raised concerns among some citizens, as the implementation of the NRC has been a contentious issue in the country.

Won’t allow NRC in Bengal: Mamata at Eid congregation in Kolkata

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed some people are trying to divide the nation by pursuing politics of hate and said that she is ready to give her life but “will not allow a division of the country”.

Banerjee, speaking at a congregation for Eid namaz at the city’s Red Road, also urged people to unite and ensure that the right-wing BJP party is defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“Some people are trying to divide the country and practise politics of hate … I am ready to give my life but will not allow any division of the country,” she said, without naming anyone.

Accusing the saffron camp of trying to change the constitution of the country, Banerjee said “she will not allow implementation of NRC in West Bengal.” It has been the TMC’s stand that the National Register of Citizens and the citizen’s amendment act which confers citizenship rights on minorities from neighbouring countries was not needed and existing citixenship records and acts were sufficient.

“I am ready to fight the money power (of her political opponents), and (central) agencies (which her party alleges has been unleashed on TMC with a political motive), but I will not bow my head,” she said.

“In one year’s time, elections will be held to decide who will come to power in our country. Let us promise that we will unite and fight against divisive forces. We must ensure that all of us together vote them out in the next polls. If we fail to protect democracy, then everything will be finished.”
