    [ad_1]

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor resigned from the post on Tuesday, a day after he was nominated as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Gulrez will officiate as the Vice-Chancellor till Mansoor’s successor is appointed, a notification issued by AMU Registrar Mohammad Imran said.

According to the notification issued by Chandrashekhar, Special Secretary, on Monday night, Mansoor is among six people nominated by the Governor as MLCs against eight vacancies.

Asked about his new role, Mansoor told PTI, “It is a very positive development and we will work for education and for the development of Uttar Pradesh and our country.”

“If the Governor has nominated me on the recommendation of the government, then I will work to the best of my abilities and make a contribution in the Legislative Council to various legislations and laws… especially those related to education and health,” he said.

In an open letter to university students and staff on Monday, Mansoor thanked the AMU community for standing by him during his six years at the helm, especially in facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As I demit office, this is the last time I address you as the Vice-Chancellor. I had the opportunity of serving the institution for six years during good and challenging times,” he said.

  • If PM Modi was nominated, India could have won one more Oscar: KTR

If PM Modi was nominated, India could have won one more Oscar: KTR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana industries minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Wednesday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying that India could have won one more Oscar award if the PM was nominated under the best actor category.

Speaking on the Oscar win by the RRR movie team for the ‘Naatu Naatu’ song, the BRS leader mocked the Prime Minister for being a ‘great actor’ for making promises like delivering Rs 15 lakh to every Indian’s bank account.

He also said that the Prime Minister is ‘looting’ the country for the sake of Adani. He also called the BJP the ‘misfortune’ for Telangana.

KTR made these remarks during a public meeting held at the Jukkal constituency in Kamareddy district.

“What did the Congress do for the state in the last 55 years? Why should a chance be given to leaders who haven’t done anything when they had the chance? The BJP had also promised many things for Telangana during the bifurcation like the Kajipet coach factory and the Bayyaram steel plant but has terribly failed in delivering them. Alas, they still come here and speak shamelessly,” he remarked.

The minister also attacked PM Modi-led centre for a hike in the LPG prices. “Centre increased the petrol price from Rs 70 to Rs 115 per litre. The gas cylinder is now Rs 1200 from the earlier Rs 400. Prices of all essential commodities went up. So, is Modi God for doing all these injustices? He is only God to Adani but not for the people of Telangana,” KTR said.

Earlier, KTR laid the foundation stone for Nagamadugu lift irrigation project and also inaugurated a bridge built on the Manjeera river.

  • World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The World Uyghur Congress has been nominated by parliamentarians from Canada and Norway for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for its contributions to human rights and shedding light on Chinese repression of the Uyghur people in the far western region of Xinjiang, according to a media report.

It’s the first time the Germany-based group has been nominated for the prestigious prize, RFA reported.

China has faced intensifying international criticism for treatment of the 11 million predominantly Muslim Uyghur people, whose culture, language, religion, dress and food is distinct from those of the Han Chinese majority, the reports said.

The United Nations’ human rights office had issued a damning report in August last year that highlighted widespread arbitrary detentions and other actions by China that it said may constitute crimes against humanity.

The United States, the European Parliament and the legislatures of several other Western countries have declared that the abuses, including the arbitrary detention of an estimated 1.8 million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities, constitute genocide and crimes against humanity, RFA reported.

The World Uyghur Congress has “made a crucial contribution in drawing international attention to the overwhelming campaign of physical, religious, linguistic, and cultural repression currently being waged by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against the Uyghur and other Turkic people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, a campaign that many parliamentarians define as genocide”, wrote Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, a Canadian member of parliament, in the nomination letter, RFA reported.

Brunelle-Duceppe joined fellow Canadian parliamentarian Sameer Zuberi, who is the chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights, and Ane Breivik, leader of the Liberal Party of Norway, in nominating WUC.

WUC President Dolkun Isa said that it is a great honour for his organisation to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize.

“This is despite China’s incessant demonisation to conflate our peaceful international advocacy for Uyghur rights with terrorism and separatism,” he told Radio Free Asia.

“Through decades-long global efforts to demonise the WUC, China has attempted to put roadblocks to our advocacy work and silence our voice in the world, thus continuing its ongoing crimes against the Uyghur people unabated.”

Nikhat Zareen, PV Sindhu nominated for BBC ISWOTY Award

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Women’s World Boxing Champion Nikhat Zareen, ace shuttler PV Sindhu and three others athletes are nominated for the BBC Indian Sportswoman Of The Year (ISWOTY) award on Monday.

The other three athletes are wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, who recently staged a protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and accused him of sexual exploitation and intimidation.

The athletes were short-listed after a panel of jury, consisting of sports journalists and writers, voted for their preferred players, based on their achievements.

BBC ISWOTY winner will be chosen by public vote

The winner will be chosen by a public vote that began on Monday and will continue till February 20 midnight. The winner will be announced on March 5.

Rupa Jha, the Head of India BBC News, announced that they have introduced a new award category — BBC Indian para-sportswoman of the year.

Ekta Bhyan, the 2018 Asian para Games gold medallist, welcomed the move and emphasised on the need to make the stadiums more accessible to the physically challenged athletes.

“The stadiums and swimming pools should be accessible easily for the disabled athletes. Mental barriers need to be broken, about 60 to 70 percent of disabled population is still restricted to homes. More awareness and work is required at grassroots level,” Bhyan, flanked by London Olympics bronze-winning boxer Vijender Singh, said.

“Sports should be a part of education. Why should disabled athletes start their careers at the age of 15 or 16, sport should be accessible to them much earlier and there should be a comprehensive and non-discriminatory policy for disabled,” she added.

Nikhat Zareen claimed a hat-trick of gold medals in 2022

Nikhat Zareen claimed a hat-trick of gold medals in 2022. She started the year by etching her name in the history books as she became the first Indian boxer to win a second gold medal at the prestigious Strandja Memorial meet, Europe’s oldest international boxing tournament.

The Telangana boxer replicated her idol Mary Kom’s world championship-winning feat. It was India’s first worlds title in four years and only the second (after Mary) outside the country.

The 26-year-old boxer then entered the Commonwealth Games as a strong medal contender and she didn’t disappoint, clinching the 50kg title.

The Indian boxing contingent returned home with six medals from the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Five-time world championships medallist PV Sindhu

With the India Open 2023 being upgraded to the Super 750 status for the first time, the country is gearing up to witness top-notch badminton action of the highest order at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from January 17 to 22.

Distinguished names from all over the world will be gracing the prestigious tournament with their dynamic performances.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most accomplished sporting personalities, PV Sindhu will be keen on replicating her heroics from 2017 and winning the India Open for the second time in her career.

A five-time World Championships medallist in the women’s singles, the 27-year-old is India’s first and only champion in the tournament, having defeated Nozomi Okuhara in the 2019 finals and also has two Olympics medals to her name. The current World No. 7 secured the gold in last year’s Commonwealth Games to become only the second women’s singles player to win a full set of gold, silver and bronze medals at the event.

    BBC ISWOTY Award

It is BBC Hindi’s initiative to celebrate and honour sportswomen from India.

In 2020 when the first edition of the award took place, PV Sindhu emerged as winner. In the recent edition, Mirabai Chanu, Indian weightlifter won the award.

This year, Nikhat Zareen and PV Sindhu who are from Telangana are among the nominated candidates’ list.
