  • Telangana HC’s conditional nod to YSRTP for hunger strike

Telangana HC’s conditional nod to YSRTP for hunger strike

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday granted conditional permission to the YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) for a day-long hunger strike at Indira Park in Hyderabad on the problems faced by the unemployed.

The hunger strike was scheduled on April 17 under the umbrella of ‘Telangana Students’ Action for Vacancies and Employment’ (T-SAVE), a platform mooted by YSRTP President Y.S. Sharmila but the police had denied permission for the same.

Sharmila had filed a petition in the High Court, seeking direction from the police to allow the protest. The High Court, however, directed that not more than 500 people should participate in the hunger strike.

    MS Education Academy

The organisers were also directed to approach the police 48 hours before their hunger strike.

Sharmila is likely to announce a new date for protest in a day or two.

After the police denied the permission, the YSRTP had lashed out at Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for it calls his atrocious reign and dictatorial treatment of those who raised voice against his failures and fake promises.

Blasting the state government for forcing Hyderabad police to refuse permission to T-SAVE hunger strike, YSRTP official spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said that it is shameful in a democratic setup to not let activists enter their own party office.

The Political Affairs Committee had alleged that Sharmila is repeatedly being targeted because KCR is now scared of her fight and commitment towards Telangana. “We have been tirelessly fighting for the cause and the rights of the unemployed. Not only is the state government silent and arrogant, they are also depriving us of our right to fight and protest,” he said.

“T-SAVE was proposed as a common platform and we had decided to conduct a hunger strike for a day near Indira Park. This plea was rejected by the city police. Is this fair on the part of the party that claims its emergence and existence to public movements and people’s protests? Didn’t KCR conduct numerous protests at Indira Park earlier? How can the rules be different for BRS and others?” added Ramachandra Rao.

He claimed that the proposed hunger strike had the support of 39 social organisations and various political parties.

No FIR against school jobs scam investigators without nod: HC

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday said that without its permission, no FIR can be registered against officers of the ED and CBI, who are investigating irregularities in recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools.

Kuntal Ghosh, an accused arrested by the ED in the case, recently alleged that he was being pressured by investigators to take the name of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and this was alluded to by the Trinamool leader in a public speech which was taken note of by the High Court.

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s direction came while hearing a matter related to the recruitment scam.

    MS Education Academy

He observed that a letter to the lower judiciary by Ghosh, who is alleged to have acted as an agent in the scam, to the effect that the investigators were pressuring him to take the name of the TMC leader was an attempt by the accused to influence them.

The aspects indicated in Abhishek Banerjee’s public speech should also not be outside the purview of the investigation by the CBI, the court observed.

Later in the evening while addressing a press conference, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh alleged that a section of the judiciary is “not behaving as per law”.

“I have immense respect for the judiciary. The TMC as a party has immense respect for the judiciary, too,” Ghosh said.

He, however, also alleged, “But, unfortunately a section of the judiciary at the Calcutta High Court is not behaving as per law.”

Reacting to Ghosh’s statement, BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said the outburst of the TMC is quite natural as “the cat is now out of the bag”.

“Several TMC leaders are being arrested in corruption cases. And, whoever speaks out against the corruption of TMC is wrong, be it the governor or the judiciary. This proves they have no respect for the judiciary,” Ghosh said.

Appearing for the petitioner, senior lawyer Bikash Bhattacharya prayed before the court that a forensic examination of the letter be ordered.

ED counsel Samrat Goswami submitted that Ghosh was arrested by the agency on January 21, and was in its custody for 14 days on orders of the lower court.

After his ED custody ended, Ghosh has remained in judicial remand.

Justice Gangopadhyay directed the ED and the CBI to file reports before the court by April 20 with regard to the letter.

Congress slams govt after NGT forms panel to revisit environmental nod to Nicobar project

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday attacked the Centre over the National Green Tribunal constituting a committee to re-examine the environmental nod to the Great Nicobar Island project, alleging that the Modi government has embarked on “ecocide” and what is being pushed through is an “ecological nightmare”.

The National Green Tribunal has constituted a high-powered committee to re-examine the environmental clearance granted to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIDCO) for the multi-component mega project in the Great Nicobar Island.

Alongside the development of an international container transhipment terminal, the project also involves the construction of a military-civil dual-use airport, a gas-, diesel- and solar-based power plant, and a township.

    MS Education Academy

Tagging a media report on the committee’s constitution, Congress general secretary and former Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh said, “When we are applauding 50 years of Chipko Andolan and Project Tiger and 40 years of the historic decision to protect Silent Valley, the Modi government has embarked on ecocide in Great Nicobar.” “What is being pushed through is an ecological nightmare,” Ramesh said.

The National Green Tribunal was hearing appeals against forest clearance and environmental clearance provided to the project proponent ANIDCO. On January 11, it had sought a response from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the project proponent.

A bench of chairperson Justice AK Goel along with judicial members Justice Sudhir Agarwal, Justice B Amit Sthalekar and Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi said there was a need for adequate studies on the adverse impact on coral reefs, mangroves, turtle nesting sites, bird nesting sites, other wildlife, of erosion, disaster management and other conservation and mitigation measures.
