Nikki Haley says if voted to power, she will cut foreign aid to countries which hate America

Washington: Indian-American Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has vowed that if voted to power, she will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries which hate America.
She mentioned Pakistan, China, Iraq and other countries, saying “a strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys”.
The 51-year-old two-term Governor of South Carolina and the former US Ambassador to the United Nations formally launched her 2024 presidential bid earlier this month.
“I will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries that hate us. A strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys. A proud America doesn’t waste our people’s hard-earned money. And the only leaders who deserve our trust are those who stand up to our enemies and stand beside our friends,” she wrote in an op-ed in the New York Post.
She said that America has spent USD 46 billion on foreign aid last year, which is given to countries like China, Pakistan, and Iraq. American taxpayers deserve to know where that money is going and what it’s doing, she added.
“They will be shocked to find that much of it goes to fund anti-American countries and causes. As president, I’ll put a stop to this fiasco,” she said.
According to Haley, the Biden administration resumed military aid to Pakistan, though it’s home to at least a dozen terrorist organisations and its government is deeply in hock to China.
She said that as the US ambassador to the UN, she strongly supported then president Donald Trump’s decision to cut nearly USD 2 billion of military aid to Pakistan because that country supported terrorists who kill American troops.

“It was a major victory for our troops, our taxpayers and our vital interests, but it didn’t go nearly far enough. We’ve still given them way too much in other aid. As president, I will block every penny,” she added.
She said that the Biden administration restored half a billion dollars to “a corrupt United Nations agency” that’s supposed to help the Palestinian people but in fact covers for deeply anti-Semitic propaganda against our ally Israel. She added the US has given Iraq more than USD 1 billion over the last few years, even though its government is getting closer to Iran.
She said American taxpayers still give money to “Communist China for ridiculous environment programs, despite the obvious threat China poses to Americans.”
“We give money to Belarus, which is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s closest ally. We even give money to Communist Cuba a country our own government has designated as a state sponsor of terrorism,” she said, adding that it’s been happening for decades under presidents of both parties.
“I am running for president to restore our nation’s strength, our national pride and our people’s trust. Backing American allies and friends like Israel and Ukraine is smart. Sending our tax dollars to enemies isn’t,” she added.
“At the UN, I put together a book of how much money we give other countries and how often they vote with us. It was eye-opening. We are giving huge amounts of cash to countries that vote against us most of the time. That doesn’t make sense. I’ll stop it. America can’t buy our friends. We’ll certainly never buy off our enemies,” she added.
Less than a fortnight after entering the race to the White House, Haley is leading against President Joe Biden in a hypothetical match, according to a latest opinion poll on Friday. But she trails badly against leading GOP candidate former president Trump, Rasmussen Report said based on a survey it conducted between February 16 to 19.
Among the Republicans she comes at the third position after Trump (52 per cent) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (24 per cent).
Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa to immigrant Punjabi Sikh parents, Haley is the third Indian-American to run for the US presidency in three consecutive election cycles. Bobby Jindal ran in 2016 and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020.
Before entering the presidential ballot, Haley has to win the Republican Party’s presidential primary which will start in January next year. The next US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024.

Florida Dems elect Nikki Fried to lead the party after ‘horrific November’

In her remarks following her victory, Fried vowed to unite the party, and work to deny the White House to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to run for president.
“You better believe we are going to take it to Ron DeSantis every damn day,” Fried told a crowded room of Democrats gathered at a hotel just north of Orlando. Fried also vowed to send Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who is up for re-election in 2024, “home to Naples” next year.
A few months ago, Fried told reporters and fellow Democrats that she wasn’t interested in becoming party chair. But now she’s in charge of an undercapitalized and deeply demoralized party that was crushed by Republicans last November. DeSantis defeated Democratic nominee Charlie Crist by nearly 20 points, Republicans gained a supermajority in the Legislature and the GOP picked up four more congressional seats, which helped them retake the U.S. House.
One of the most obvious signs of Republican dominance is that Florida flipped from a state where Democrats held a voter registration advantage to one where the GOP now has 417,000 more active registered voters.
In the 2022 elections, national Democrats largely abandoned the state and did not put any significant amounts of money in any of the statewide or congressional races.
Some Florida Democrats, such as Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, have insisted that Democrats will not walk away from Florida in 2024, when President Joe Biden is expected to be on the ballot. Biden lost the state to former President Donald Trump by 3 percent.
Fried, who acknowledged Democrats had a “horrific November election,” pledged to ramp up “low dollar donations” while saying she has been talking to Democratic donors and national groups about reengaging with the state. She also discussed extending money to local Democratic groups and organizations and getting involved in more down ballot races.
“When we are showing success, when we are showing that we got a plan for success, the donors will be here,” said Fried.

Fried also argued that national groups will get more involved in the state because it is “ground zero” of the “radicalization of the Republican Party.” During her remarks to Democratic executive committee members before the vote, Fried also said she had been fighting against a “zealous fascist dictator,” though she didn’t say DeSantis by name at that time.
Republicans took glee in Fried’s selection, pointing how she was soundly defeated by Crist in the Democratic primary last August.
Christian Ziegler, who last week was elected chair of the Republican Party of Florida, said before Fried can even address all the Democratic Party shortcomings “she is going to have to start by convincing the 65 percent of Democrats who rejected her just months ago.”
“Fried drew the short straw,” Ziegler said via text. “The losing by Democrats will continue and Florida will better because of it.”
A significant number of Democrats pushed back against Fried after she jumped into the race for chair less than two weeks ago.
Some of those hesitant to support Fried said her decision to run for party chair would put her on the sidelines in the near term and take her out of the running to challenge someone like Scott. Samantha Hope Herring, a Democratic National Committee member from north Florida, said anyone who becomes chair will get “dirtied up.”
Steve Schale, a political strategist who directed Barack Obama’s Florida campaign in 2008, said that “the reality is, to do this job right you are going to have to make decisions to anger people who elected you to this job.”
“You can’t go into it with a mindset you will run,” said Schale, who said the main directive of the new party chair should be to raise money and register voters.
Thomas Kennedy, a Democratic National Committee member from Florida who backed Taddeo for chair, added that “it’s a punching bag job.”
“We need a chair that’s not interested in running again in 2024 or 2026 and is interested in the job,” Kennedy said. “You unseat Rick Scott and you’re a goddamn hero.”
When asked, Fried said she had not made any promises to Democratic executive committee members that she would forgo any future political campaigns in the next two cycles.
But she added she planned to be chair for “the foreseeable future” and that “no matter who wants to run for statewide office in the future we got to make sure the structure is here.”

Nikki Yadav murder case: Victim’s family planning to write to PM for justice

Jhajjar: The family members and supporters of Nikki Yadav, who was allegedly murdered by her purported husband Sahil Gehlot, so he could marry again, are planning to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that the accused be tried in a fast track court and receive stern punishment.
“We, along with 36 other communities, will jointly write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand the case be moved to fast track court,” Yadav Samaj district chief Virendra Yadav, commonly known as ‘Daroga’ in the area, said.
Daroga said that in coming days they will hold a meeting with the members of Yadav community and decide their further course of action. “We are also planning a candle march to pay our respects to the deceased Nikki,” he said.
“We want the case to be fast track and Daroga from our community is planning to write a letter to the PM. My fight will continue till the accused is hanged till death,” said Nikki’s father Sunil Yadav, in his house at village Kheri Khummar, two km away from Haryana’s Jhajjar city and 144 km from Delhi.
Daroga said that there is extreme anger among the villagers and community members over the brutal murder of Nikki Yadav. “She should be given justice and the only way to give justice is if the case is heard in a fast track court and the culprit gets capital punishment,” he said.
Days after it was believed that Nikki and Gehlot were both live-in partners, the accused interrogation had revealed that the couple had actually tied a knot at an Arya Samaj temple in nearby Greater Noida in October 2020.
Nikki Yadav’s body was found in a fridge at dhaba, owned by Gehlot, in Mitraon village, outskirts of Delhi on Valentine’s Day (February 14). He had allegedly killed her on February 10 and gone on to marry another woman on the same day.
Police have also arrested Gehlot’s father, his two cousins Ashish and Naveen (a constable in Delhi Police) and two friends, Amar and Lokesh, for hatching a conspiracy to get rid of Nikki and go ahead with the wedding with another girl.

The interrogation of Gehlot revealed that he had earlier planned to push her out of a moving car and show her death as an accident.
As his plan could not work out, he then strangled her with a charging data cable in the car at Nigambodh Ghat parking and then stuffed her body inside the fridge in his dhaba.
Meanwhile, Nikki’s family members said that the murder of their daughter was not done in fit of rage but was a pre-planned conspiracy and so far they are completely satisfied with the ongoing Delhi Police’s Crime Branch investigation.
“As we see the circumstances of the murder, from no possible way it was the result of sudden outrage. They had planned it and Gehlot went to Bindapur flat with the intention to kill her. Everybody who is involved in the murder should be given a death sentence,” Parveen Yadav, Nikki’s uncle, said.
Nikki’s uncle is a Kargil war veteran and had even lost a part of his right arm during the war.
Nikki’s father, who runs an automobile business in Gurugram had shifted back to their house in the village from Dwarka in 2020 after Nikki’s grandfather Ramkishan asked them to, however, Nikki continued her studies in Delhi, said a relative.

Older voters balk at Nikki Haley’s competency test

It’s also a risk.
In her short time on the trail, Haley has irked some older voters, the cohort that just so happens to be a substantial and reliable voting bloc within her party.
“I do like Nikki’s platform, her plank regarding term limits. I think that’s important,” Richard Ploss, 71, of Exeter, New Hampshire, said at her town hall in Manchester. But the mental competency test? “That’s a little over the top.”
“Well, we’re old …,” his 72-year-old wife, Susan Ploss, interjected. The Republican couple, who own a chemical supply company and previously voted for Trump, hesitated to applaud the line in Haley’s speech and ducked out before the question-and-answer portion of her event.
Interviews with more than a dozen attendees at Haley’s first campaign events in recent days — all but three in their 60s, 70s and 80s — revealed a GOP primary electorate open to a younger standard-bearer but sharply divided over the insinuation that someone their age might be lacking in mental aptitude. Seven said they opposed the call for applying mental acuity tests to elderly politicians. Three thought the testing requirement should apply to people of all ages. And three thought her plan targeting older people was a good idea.
Some political veterans in the key states said they weren’t surprised by those findings.
“I just feel like the competency test was a gimmick to get attention and one that ultimately could backfire, because arguably, the largest voting bloc in the Republican primary is older voters,” New Hampshire-based Republican strategist Mike Dennehy said. “New Hampshire’s population has been aging over the last decade. There are more and more older people coming to New Hampshire to retire.”
Haley’s campaign, in a statement to POLITICO, said she is merely suggesting the type of brief screening that doctors frequently used to measure older patients’ cognitive abilities.

“When 81-year-old Bernie Sanders is chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, it’s not too much to have him take a 10-minute test to see whether he has the mental ability to draw a clock or identify an animal,” said Nachama Soloveichik, one of Haley’s campaign advisers. “We’re not talking rocket science here.”
On the trail, Haley has framed her call for cognitive tests on septuagenarian politicians as “not being disrespectful” but, rather, pursuing “transparency.”
The call was part of her campaign launch in South Carolina, accompanied by tangential proposals under the umbrella of generational change: such as calls to drain the swamp and institute congressional term limits. The proposal was echoed in her speech before a few hundred Republicans packed into the showroom of Royal Flooring in Urbandale on Monday. It was delivered between popular lines about stopping gender lessons and “woke ideologies” in schools and ending national “defeatism.” Mostly, Haley drew a rhythmic applause from the crowd, including when talking about competency tests. But approached directly, not all older voters were totally on board.
Eric Riedinger, 63, of Des Moines, said he could get behind a competency test that would apply to candidates of all ages — and believes “Trump would do excellent.” But he is against merely targeting people who have reached their 70s.
“Why base it on your seniors?” Riedinger said. “You know, I’m a senior now, too.”
Haley’s potential opponents on the trail have largely dismissed her call or come out in opposition.
Trump, for his part, spent much of the last week ignoring it. But by Tuesday morning, he had embraced it, adding that such a screening should not just apply to older politicians. “ANYBODY running for the Office of President of the United States should agree to take a full & complete Mental Competency Test,” Trump posted on his Truth Social website, also suggesting candidates take “a test which would prove that you are physically capable of doing the job.”
Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, 72, on Tuesday said there was no need for more restrictions on voters’ choices.
“The U.S. Constitution lays out requirements to hold the office of President of the United States, so let’s stick with that,” Hutchinson, who is considering a run for president, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Additionally, there is a mental acuity test every time a candidate stands before voters in a town-hall setting, a diner on the campaign trail, or on a voter’s door step.”
Vivek Ramaswamy, the 37-year-old entrepreneur now eyeing the Republican nomination, said Haley was “dead wrong” in calling for competency tests.
Former Vice President Mike Pence largely deflected when asked by a reporter last week, laughing as he said that voters in Indiana “think every politician should submit to a cognitive test.”
A representative for Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) declined to comment about Haley’s proposal, while staff for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu did not respond to requests for comment.
In an interview at Haley’s Urbandale event, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), 67, said “there may be something” for Congress to do, eventually, with regard to gauging candidate competence. But she wasn’t convinced that there was any need for an immediate fix.
“But I would like to say that Sen. Grassley is tremendously competent,” the congresswoman, an ophthalmologist, said of 89-year-old Chuck Grassley, Iowa’s senior senator. “You talk to him, there’s not a subject that he’s not proficient in.”
Haley’s call comes as more than half of registered voters in a new national Harris/Harvard Center for American Political Studies poll say they doubt Biden’s mental fitness. That includes 66 percent of independents who, in open-primary states like New Hampshire, could pull a Republican primary ballot.
But Haley’s mental competency suggestion could prove to be off-putting to crucial voters in New Hampshire, which has the second-oldest population in the country based on median age, according to the most recent Census data.
At her town hall at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics in Manchester, Haley’s stump-speech line about cognitive tests for 75-year-olds drew noticeably less applause than her calls for generational change in leadership and for congressional term limits. Some voters grew visibly uncomfortable when asked their opinions of it.
Walter Neuman, an 80-year-old Republican from Hopkinton who voted for Trump in 2020, said “it’s about time” for younger leaders to take the helm of the party. But he added that he was “on the fence” about testing politicians’ mental acuity.
“I understand the concept,” Neuman said. “But we’ve been pretty successful through the years without it.”
Still, Haley has sold some voters on the idea, including those in the advanced-aged bracket. David Freligh, a 78-year-old from Pella, Iowa, said he fully supports the proposal.
“I’m slipping a little bit,” said Freligh, who wore an Air Force cap and a Haley 2024 T-shirt to her Monday town hall. “I think I’m still quite competent, but I’m not what I used to be.”
Republican Betty Gay, a former New Hampshire state representative who voted for Trump in 2020, said she would want mental competency tests “for people much younger” than 75.
“Age is not a guarantee that you’re wise,” the 77-year-old Republican said.
But there are signs that Haley knows the messaging on the competency tests needs to be fine-tuned. Across her two nights in New Hampshire, she added a line that tacitly acknowledged some older voters might be offended by the concept.
“I don’t mean any disrespect by that,” Haley said in Manchester. “But we all know young 75- year-olds and we all know old 75-year-olds, right? And you look at D.C. and you see a whole lot of old people. What I’m saying is you should have trust in who you send to Washington.”
By Monday night in Iowa, instead of focusing on all the old folks in D.C., Haley mocked Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-V.T.) disapproving response to her cognitive test suggestion. She then moved along to another topic.
Kim Schmett, a Republican consultant and activist in Iowa, said he “had to chuckle a little” when he first heard Haley’s competency test suggestion.
Schmett, who noted that his own age is creeping up, said he didn’t believe a cognitive exam is necessary for candidates, despite acknowledging concern about some aging officials. But he didn’t imagine the proposal itself would be determinative to Haley’s presidential prospects.
“I think most senior citizens realize there are some physical questions and so forth that are more frequent when you’re older,” Schmett said. “I don’t see any backlash for her on that.”

Nikki Yadav case: Sahil Gehlot taken to temple where they solemnised marriage in 2020

Delhi: The Delhi Police took Sahil Gehlot, accused of killing his first wife Nikki Yadav and keeping her body in a refrigerator, to the Arya Samaj Mandir in Greater Noida where they had solemnised the marriage, sources said on Sunday.
According to the sources, police have recorded the statements of the temple’s priest and the witnesses who were present at the time of the marriage.
Gehlot allegedly killed Yadav, stuffed her body inside a refrigerator of his dhaba in southwest Delhi, and went off to marry another woman. The incident had come to light on February 14, Valentine’s Day, four days after the crime.
The police have so far arrested Gehlot, his father and four others — two cousins and two friends — in connection with the case. The police claimed that they had planned to get rid of Yadav so that Sahil Gehlot could marry a second time to a woman of the family’s choosing.
The police on Saturday recorded the statement of Nikki Yadav’s younger sister.
In her statement, she denied that she was aware about the marriage of her sister with Sahil Gehlot. She told police that she knew that they were good friends, they said.
Gehlot married Yadav at an Arya Samaj temple in 2020. The couple had not informed their respective families about their marriage.
“However, when Gehlot’s parents started looking for a girl for his marriage and started pressuring him to take interest in marriage…, he finally revealed to his family that he was already married,” a police officer said earlier.

When Gehlot’s family got to know about his marriage to Yadav, they expressed their displeasure over him marrying a girl of his choice without informing them.
Nikki Yadav’s parents told police that they were not aware of her relationship or her wedding with Gehlot.

Nikki Yadav murder: Delhi court sends 5 accused to 2-day custody

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sent Sahil Gehlot and four co-accused in the Nikki Yadav murder case, to two-day police custody.
Gehlot had strangled the 23-year-old woman at Kashmiri Gate on February 10.
The police had produced the five arrested people before the court on Friday night.
On Wednesday, the court had sent Gehlot to five-day police custody for interrogation.
In a recent development, Gehlot has told the investigators that the two had married in 2020.
Police have also arrested Gehlot’s father, his two cousins Ashish and Naveen (Constable in Delhi Police) and two friends Amar and Lokesh for hatching a conspiracy to get rid of Yadav and go ahead with the wedding with another girl.
According to a senior police official, the prime accused Gehlot was interrogated at length during police custody and disclosed that Yadav was dissuading him from marrying someone else as they had already solemnised their marriage in 2020.
“She was pleading with him not to go ahead with the marriage fixed by his family with another girl on February 10. However, Sahil along with his father, two cousins and two friends hatched the conspiracy and planned to remove the deceased from their way,” said the official.

“Sahil executed the plan and murdered her and informed the other co-accused persons about it on the same day and then all of them went ahead with the marriage ceremony,” said the official.
“All the five co-accused were thoroughly interrogated and arrested after verifying and ascertaining their role,” the official added.
According to the official, on the night of February 9, Gehlot, a resident of Mitraon village, went to meet the woman at her Uttam Nagar residence where she lived with her younger sister.
“Sahil stayed there for two-three hours and later both of them went to Nizammudin railway station. But as they could not get tickets to Goa, they decided to go to Himachal Pradesh instead and reached ISBT, Kashmere Gate,” said the official.
When the duo reached ISBT, an argument broke out between them. He then strangled Nikki with his mobile phone data cable inside the car, probably around 8 a.m on February 10, drove to his dhaba to hide her body, and then proceeded with his wedding on February 10.

In a racist tirade, Nikki Haley asked to go back to ‘her own country’

New York: Calling Indian-American Nikki Haley a ‘bimbo’ and ‘preposterous creature’, conservative pundit and author Ann Coutler asked the Republican presidential candidate to return to India.
“Why don’t you go back to your own country?” Coulter said, making an appearance on the ‘The Mark Simone Show’ podcast this week.
Born Nimrata ‘Nikki’ Randhawa, Haley announced her presidential bid on February 14 in a video message where she proudly talked about her Indian heritage.
She had said that as a brown girl, growing up in a black-and-white world, she saw the promise of America unfold before her.
“Her candidacy did remind me that I need to immigrate to India so I can demand they start taking down parts of their history,” Coutler said.
Coutler’s rants did not stop at just Haley, she targeted India as well, the NBC News reported.
“What’s with the worshipping of the cows? They’re all starving over there. Did you know they have a rat temple, where they worship rats?”
Coulter said that Haley’s decision to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s Statehouse following the 2015 mass shooting at a predominantly black church in Charleston, angered her.

She slammed Haley, calling her a “Bimbo” and a “preposterous creature” for her decision.”This is my country, lady,” she said.
“I’m not an American Indian, and I don’t like them taking down all the monuments,” NBC News reported Coutler as saying.
Haley, so far, has not responded to Coutler’s comments.
Haley has been a rising star in the Republican party and long expected to run for the White House, IANS reported earlier.
She is a former two-term Governor of South Carolina, one of America’s most conservative states, and former Ambassador to the UN, a cabinet-rank position she held in the administration of then President Donald Trump.
Haley is the third Indian American to seek the Week House, following Bobby Jindal in 2015-16 and Kamala Harris in 2019-20.

Nikki Haley calls CNN’s Don Lemon a ‘sexist middle-aged’ anchor after comments about her not being in her prime

Lemon on Thursday morning criticized her comments — and got personal.
“This whole talk about age makes me uncomfortable,” Lemon said to co-hosts Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins during the “CNN This Morning” show. “I think it’s the wrong road to go down. She says people, you know, politicians are suddenly not in their prime. Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime. Sorry, when a woman is in their prime in 20s and 30s and maybe 40s.”
The comments received instant backlash on social media, and caused on-air tension. “Wait … prime for what?” Harlow, who is 41, asked.
“Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just saying what the facts are,” Lemon responded. “Google it.”
Lemon took to Twitter to apologize for those comments Thursday afternoon, calling them “inartful and irrelevant.”
“The reference I made to a woman’s ‘prime’ this morning was inartful and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I regret it,” Lemon wrote. “A woman’s age doesn’t define her either personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who prove that every day.”

Nikki Yadav murder case: Accused taken to crime scene at Kashmiri Gate

New Delhi: The police team probing the Nikki Yadav murder case took the accused Sahil Gehlot to the crime scene in Kashmiri Gate where he had allegedly killed her, police sources on Thursday.

Meanwhile, police teams are also scanning CCTV around the place and on the route to verify all this.
“The complete sequence is being examined so that the exact place and time of Nikki’s murder can be known. Police have also summoned Ashish, Gehlot’s brother, in whose car he strangled Nikki with a data cable, for questioning,” said the sources.
Sources also said that the police team will also take Gehlot to Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar railway stations, where he had taken Yadav in the car the day he killed her.
According to the official, on February 9 night, the accused Gehlot, a resident of Mitraon village, went to meet the woman at her Uttam Nagar residence where she lived with her younger sister.
“Gehlot stayed there for two-three hours and later both of them went to Nizammudin railway station. But as they could not get tickets to Goa, they changed their plan to go to Himachal Pradesh and reached ISBT, Kashmere Gate,” said the official.
“When the duo reached ISBT, an argument broke out between them. In between the fight, Gehlot kept receiving back-to-back calls from his family, which he says triggered him to his threshold point and he turned violent,” said a source.

He then strangled Nikki with his mobile phone data cable inside the car, probably around 8 a.m on February 10, drove to his dhaba to hide her body, and then, proceeded with his wedding on February 10.

Why Nikki Haley shouldn’t be counted out just yet

We are old enough to remember when pundits in 2015 declared that Donald Trump would never be president, and we can recall nights in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada in late 2019 and early 2020 when the same was said about Joe Biden.
Haley acknowledged the low expectations set by the nattering nabobs. “I’ve been underestimated before,” she said. She entered politics in 2004 by defeating South Carolina’s longest-serving House member. In 2010, she leapt from the statehouse to the governor’s mansion after defeating a field of seasoned politicians in a GOP primary and overcoming her close association with disgraced Gov. Mark Sanford. She was 38 years old.
Now 51, you can see why she looks at the 2024 race and thinks she can repeat that kind of upset — and why her speech yesterday was heavy on the theme of “a new generation,” which has the advantage of working against both Trump, who will be 78 next year, and Biden, who will turn 82 after the election. Much of the coverage emphasized that Haley was a throwback to the pre-Trump GOP, but she is not above Trump-style trolling. One of the few specific policies in her speech was “mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.”
The GOP primary is being described as a matchup between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, but the defining characteristic of recent GOP presidential primaries is volatility.
In 2008, there were three different frontrunners (former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Arizona Sen. John McCain). In 2012, there were five candidates who took the lead in national polls (former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, businessman Herman Cain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum). In 2016, there were three leaders (former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Trump).
The cases of Cain and Carson are instructive. They were Black candidates who decried what Republicans now call “wokeism,” and they received a rapturous response from the party’s primary voters, who are overwhelmingly white. But as inexperienced outsiders to politics, neither could cope with the sustained scrutiny and attacks that came with their surges in the polls.
In addition to her relative youth, Haley is emphasizing an anti-woke pitch that has more resonance than ever among her party’s voters. “Every day, we’re told America is flawed, rotten and full of hate. Joe and Kamala even say America’s racist,” she said. “Take it from me, the first minority female governor in history, America is not a racist country.”
In recent primaries, it only took one breakout moment during a debate to kick off a surge in the polls. Haley has been in politics since 2004, which complicates her “new generation” pitch, but it also suggests that she’s more prepared for the scrutiny if she catches fire.

Much has been made of Haley reneging on her promise not to run if Trump does. This is great fodder for reportorial intrigue because it’s such clear evidence of the main rap against her: that she constantly shifts positions. But voters have a long history of ignoring such pledges. (Then-Sen. Barack Obama also said he wasn’t going to run for president in 2008, and it worked out okay for him.)
The Republican field now seems like it will be smaller than previously thought. In addition to DeSantis, here’s a list of the most credible potential candidates, oldest to youngest: former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (72), former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (66), former Vice President Mike Pence (63), former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (60), former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (59), Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina (57), Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (56), former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (56), South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (51) and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (48). (DeSantis is 44.)
Do any of those names jump out as unambiguously superior candidates to take on the two MAGA frontrunners?
The last piece of Haley’s argument for her candidacy is electability. “If you’re tired of losing, put your trust in a new generation,” she said to fellow Republicans.
She will not be the only candidate to make the “loser” case against Trump.
In an evenly divided country characterized by over two decades of close presidential elections, electability can be a tough sell to a party’s base. It generally becomes a more relevant pitch after a party has been out of power for a long time. (Think Bill Clinton in 1992, after Democrats were in the wilderness for 12 years.)
Being shut out of the White House for just one term might not be enough to convince GOP voters to abandon Trump as a clear loser, even if you throw in the results of 2018 and 2022. But it’s certainly the obvious argument to be making. And Haley may have as good a chance of making it stick as any of her potential opponents.
