NIA to probe Ram Navami clashes in Bengal: Calcutta HC

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ruled that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the clashes during the recent Ram Navami processions in certain pockets of Howrah and Hooghly district of West Bengal.

The division bench of Calcutta High Court’s acting Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya directed the state police to handover all case- related documents to the NIA within the next two weeks.

Following the clashes, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari had approached the same division bench of the Calcutta High Court with the plea for a central agency probe.

On April 10, the NIA authorities also informed the Calcutta High Court that they will have no problem in taking over the probe on this count if the court permits.

The division bench observed that it is beyond the ability of the state police to find those who were responsible for the clashes or who instigated it and hence a probe by a central agency was necessary.

Justice Sivagnanam also raised questions about the suspension of Internet services in the troubled belts after the clashes. “In such clashes the Internet services cannot be suspended. Such events keep the people tense,” he observed.

Earlier, the division bench questioned the efficiency of the intelligence wing of the state police regarding pelting of stones from the roofs of residences in the troubled belts. The bench questioned the failure of the intelligence in getting information about stones being accumulated on the rooftops.

  • NIA raids underway at 17 locations of banned PFI

NIA raids underway at 17 locations of banned PFI

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday conducted raids at 17 locations across the country of the banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) in connection with a terror case.

According to sources, the searches that began early this morning were on in the states of Bihar, UP, Punjab and Goa.

An official communication by the probe agency is awaited.

    MS Education Academy

The Ministry of Home Affairs had on September 28 declared the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its eight affiliates “unlawful associations” for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The ban came shortly after the NIA, ED and various state police forces carried out a coordinated nationwide crackdown on the PFI.

In 2019, the Uttar Pradesh government sought a ban on the PFI for its alleged involvement in anti-CAA protests in parts of the state.

The Central government’s ban on the PFI was imposed on several counts centred on terror, including terror funding and training. Consequently, hundreds of its leaders have been apprehended in the past few days.

As per the sources, the specific reasons for the Union government to ban the outfit pertains to the PFI’s efforts to “radicalise” vulnerable people of a community, its links to other terrorist organisations, including the IS, and more significantly, posing a threat to India’s internal security by way of involvement in major violent incidents that point at the PFI.

    Details are awaited.

  • NIA officer suspended on corruption charges

NIA officer suspended on corruption charges

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Ministry of Home Affairs has suspended a superintendent of police rank officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of corruption, sources said on Tuesday.

The officer has been identified as Vishal Garg, who is deputed at the Delhi headquarters of the NIA.
This is the second time since 2019 that Garg was placed under suspension on charges of corruption.

In 2019, Garg along with two other NIA officials– Nishant and Mithilesh– was placed under suspension for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore from a Delhi-based businessman for not naming him in a terrorism funding case involving Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed. Nishant and Mithilesh were then posted with NIA’s intelligence and operations wing.

    MS Education Academy

In 2020, the MHA reinstated Garg and gave a clean chit to two juniors. Garg was then transferred to New Delhi from Lucknow and made incharge of training with “immediate effect”.

As per sources, the fresh suspension of Garg is linked to another charge of corruption.
The MHA’s action followed an examination of Garg’s probe report. MHA is the cadre controlling authority for IPS and NIA officers.

Garg was earlier the chief investigation officer of the 2007 Samjhauta and Ajmer blast cases that resulted in the acquittals of Swami Assemanand and others.

The train blast in February 2007 had led to the death of 68 people, mostly Pakistanis.
Garg, from the Border Security Force, was among the first officers to be permanently inducted in the NIA, which was set up in the aftermath of the 26/11 attack.

  • BJP MP demands NIA probe in Sambalpur violence

BJP MP demands NIA probe in Sambalpur violence

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP leader and Bargah MP Suresh Pujari Monday demanded a NIA probe into the recent violence in Sambalpur district.

The BJP leader claimed the Sambalpur violence where many people including 10 police personnel were injured during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, may be linked to “anti-national activities”.

This came as the ruling BJD said that the state BJP has been trying to create tension in Odisha between communities,

    MS Education Academy

“Anti-national slogans were raised during the group clash in Sambalpur on April 12. It proves presence of anti-national forces here,” Pujari alleged.

He claimed that as gangster Guddu Muslim’s driver came to Bargarh district and allegedly stayed with one man identified as Raja Khan after the Praygraj shootpit incident, the communal violence which broke out here could be linked to anti-nationals.

“What is the link between Guddu Muslim and Raja Khan? Who were given shelter in Odisha? Are they in anyway linked to the Sambalpur violence?” he querried.

Stating that the Odisha unit of BJP has already apprised Union Home Minister Amit Shah on these issues, Pujari said that Odisha Police does not have the resources to conduct a detailed investigation into such incidents and the state government should hand the case over the NIA.

Earlier, the Odisha BJP had alleged that Raja Khan, a close aide of Guddu Muslim, is an associate of BJD MLA Susanta Singh, a claim which the ruling party rejected outright.

Odisha’s Industries Minister Pratap Deb alleged that BJP was attempting to create tension for the last 15 years.

“Action should be taken against those breaking the law or instigating violence irrespective of the party affiliation. Let police and law do their work,” he said.
