Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park experience in the city is going to become more expensive, as the forest department seeks to raise revenue by increasing the admission price.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Zoos and Parks Authority of Telangana (ZAPAT) on Tuesday, which was presided over by forests minister A Indrakaran Reddy.

Adults will now pay Rs 70 on weekdays and Rs 80 on holidays and weekends, while children will pay Rs 45 on weekdays and Rs 55 on holidays and weekends, according to the new pricing system.

Previously, tickets for adults were priced at Rs 60 on weekdays and Rs 75 on weekends and holidays, while children’s tickets were priced at Rs 40 on weekdays and Rs 50 on weekends and holidays.

The Forest department, however, has decided to raise the admission price across the board in order to produce more revenue.

Information on when the new prices will come into effect is not yet known.

China: FM hits back at Cong, says Nehru had washed his hands off north-east

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday hit back at the Congress questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on Chinese actions on the border, saying the country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru had washed his hands off north-east.

She said that in 1962, the entire north-east was “left to meet their own fate” and Nehru had washed his hands off the region.

“We have stopped Chinese from coming into Arunachal Pradesh. Our action speaks for it. So they (Congress) can go on saying ‘Oh, Prime Minister doesn’t speak. I want him (Rahul Gandhi) to please check up on what their first Prime Minister, our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had said. He washed his hands off (north-east)”, Sitharaman said.

She was responding to questions at a press conference here.

“If you travel to Arunachal Pradesh and some parts of Assam, people themselves will say. The people of Arunachal Pradesh at the ground kept steadily with India and every Chinese had to go away,” the Union Minister said.

The Congress took strong objection on Tuesday to China renaming several places in Arunachal Pradesh, and charged it is the result of Modi’s “clean chit” to the neighbouring country and his “eloquent silence” on Chinese actions at the border.

India outrightly rejected the renaming, asserting that the state is an integral part of India and assigning “invented” names does not alter this reality.

New Delhi’s reaction came in response to Beijing announcing Chinese names for 11 more places in Arunachal Pradesh, which the neighbouring country claims as southern part Tibet.

  • Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a frontal attack on the Gandhi family members asking why they were ashamed of using the Nehru surname even as he criticised Jawaharlal Nehru as well as Indira Gandhi for repeatedly using Article 356 to topple state governments led by non-Congress parties.

He targeted the Congress on the issue of federalism, saying the Congress dispensations including those led by former prime ministers Nehru and Gandhi used Article 356 of the Constitution at least 90 times to topple state governments of many regional outfits.

Modi alleged that Indira Gandhi alone used Article 356 to topple governments of regional parties in states as many as 50 times.

He questioned parties such as the DMK, TDP and Left and the NCP of Sharad Pawar for aligning with the Congress which had in the past toppled their governments.

Replying to a debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address, Modi said, “I had read in some newspaper, I have not verified it, but a report said as many as 600 government schemes are only in the name of Gandhi-Nehru family.”

He said if Nehru’s name is not mentioned, some people get upset and their blood boils. They ask why Nehru’s name is not mentioned.

“…if Nehru ji’s name is left out by us, we would correct our mistake as he was the first prime minister of the country. But I do not understand why anyone from his clan is afraid of keeping Nehru surname? Is there any shame in having the Nehru surname? What is the shame? When the family is not ready to accept such a great personality, why do you keep questioning us,” he said.

His attack was targeted at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi.

Modi delivered his 90-minute speech amidst the Opposition members shouting for a probe by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) into allegations raised against the Adani Group by the US-based Hindenburg Research firm.

Responding to charges that his government was not cooperating with states, Modi said he was a chief minster before becoming the prime minister and he understood the importance of federalism.

“I have come here after being the chief minister of a state for long. I fully understand the importance of federalism. And that’s why we have emphasized on cooperative, competitive federalism.”

The prime minister asked political parties to compete, cooperate and move forward in the same direction.

“We have taken care of national progress in our policies and have addressed regional aspirations. The perfect combination of national progress and regional aspiration is reflected in our policies and we all move forward to fulfil the dream of a developed India by 2047,” he said.

He, however pointed out that MPs who are sitting in the opposition today had taken away the rights of states.

“I just want to expose them. Take a look at the history and see, which party was it, who were the people in power who misused Article 356 the most and toppled elected governments 90 times. Who are the ones who did it,” he said.

Modi said a prime minister used Article 356 as many as 50 times, hit half a century and the premier’s name was Indira Gandhi.

“Those who are standing with them in Kerala today, just remember, Left government was elected in Kerala which Pandit Nehru did not like. The first elected government was sent home within a short span of time. Today you are standing there, just remember what happened to you,” he said.

He also sought to remind the DMK that the governments of stalwarts like M G Ramachandran and M Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu were also dismissed by the same Congress.

“MGR’s soul must be watching where you are standing. Sitting here is the senior member of this House whom I always consider a respected leader, Mr. Sharad Pawar. Sharad Pawar ji was 35-40 years old in 1980. A young chief minister went out to serve his motherland, his government was also toppled, today he is there,” Modi said.

He further said the Congress harassed every regional leader, including N T Rama Rao and M G Ramachandran.

“Some people here must have changed clothes, names…after being advised by astrologers. but they were also with them at one time. NTR government was sought to be toppled at a time when he had gone to America for health check-up. This was the level of Congress politics,” Modi said.

Modi did not stop his tirade against the grand old party.

Every newspaper used to write that the Raj Bhavans were converted into Congress offices and headquarters of the Congress, he stressed.

In 2005, the NDA had more seats in Jharkhand but the Governor called the UPA to form government. In Haryana in 1982, the BJP and Devi Lal had a pre-poll agreement, but the then governor invited the Congress to form the government.

This is the Congress’s past and today it is trying to mislead the country, Modi added.

  • Bose would be embarrassed to know he was being used to diminish Nehru, Gandhi: Guha

Bose would be embarrassed to know he was being used to diminish Nehru, Gandhi: Guha

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: On most issues barring non-violence, Subhas Chandra Bose was on the same page as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and would have been “embarrassed and pained” to know he was being used to diminish the two leaders, claimed historian Ramachandra Guha.

Speaking on the launch of the third edition of his seminal work “India After Gandhi”, Guha on Tuesday noted that it was Bose who called Gandhi “Father of the Nation” and wondered “how did they (the BJP) manage to convert Gandhi, Bose, Nehru and Patel who all worked together into rivals”.

“On most things except non-violence, Bose was on the same side as Gandhi and Nehru. He would be the first person to be appalled, embarrassed and pained by what is going on, that Bose is being used to decertify Gandhi and Nehru,” said the renowned biographer of Gandhi.

The 64-year-old author during the free-wheeling discussion gave telling examples of the respect and admiration Bose had for Gandhi, Nehru and vice-versa.

For instance, he revealed how when Bose started the India National Army (INA), he named his brigades “Gandhi, Nehru and Azad (Chandra Shekhar), or how after Bose died in 1945, Gandhi made a speech in Calcutta – now Kolkata – and saluted his patriotism.

“Even on the question of the Congress presidency when Bose resigned … he said if I cannot get the trust of India’s greatest man – that’s what he thought Gandhi was — I would not continue as the president,” he said.

Bose, who was appointed as the Indian National Congress (INC) president in 1938, resigned from his position in 1939.

For the “confused” critics of Gandhi and those claiming that it was violence that got India its independence, Guha said, it is important to know that every country in Asia and Africa that won independence through violence is a “dictatorship” today.

“I think Bose is a great patriot, but the idea that he was in some ways greater to Gandhi, an alternative to Gandhi . . . I think you should read Bose himself to say what he said about Gandhi,” argued the historian of modern India.

On the Kashmir imbroglio, Guha said India due to the “petty party politics” of the Opposition missed two “extraordinary opportunities” – one under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and another under Manmohan Singh – of somewhere coming close to a just resolution.

He argued that mature democracy on important foreign policy questions should go for “some bi-partisanship”, something that both the Congress and BJP failed as Opposition in 2003 during Vajpayee’s and in 2007 when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister.

“Those two extraordinary missed opportunities and you have to blame first the Congress and then the BJP for putting the petty party interest not just over the national interest but over the possibility of peace in South Asia,” he noted.

First released in 2007 by publishing house Pan Macmillan India, “India after Gandhi” is touted to be a magisterial account of the pains, struggles, humiliations and glories of the world’s largest democracy.

  • Mehbooba Flags the 75-Year Difference Between Tricolour Unfurling By Nehru and Rahul

Mehbooba Flags the 75-Year Difference Between Tricolour Unfurling By Nehru and Rahul

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A day after warmly greeting Rahul Gandhi while joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJO) along with her daughter and mother, Mehbooba Mufti wrote a series of tweets to show the net difference between Nehru’s tricolour hoisting and Rahul’s unfurling of the national flag. At the conclusion of the BJY, Rahul led a battery of Congress leaders to unfurl the tricolour in historic Lal Chowk amid unprecedented security measures.

Unlike the Nehru-presided event soon after accession, Mehbooba said Rahul’s unfurling of the national flag took place under “different circumstances” when Jammu and Kashmir has been turned into a military garrison.

“In 1948 when PM Nehru first unfurled tiranga in Kashmir amongst a sea of people, it was a momentous occasion marked by celebrations. People of J&K had successfully fought off invaders by pushing them back & thus began a new relationship with India based on mutual trust & respect,” Mehbooba wrote in a tweet.

“Nehru’s efforts ensured a Muslim majority J&K acceded to India. He assured Kashmiris & allayed concerns about preserving their identity not only in terms of religion but also culturally within India. This was achieved through constitutional safeguards guaranteed by Article 370,” she said in another tweet.

A November 1947 photograph showing Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of Indian making his first important speech in Lal Chowk. During the course of his speech he said “India will never let down Kashmir and the Indian Army will fight on till the last raider is driven out”.

With this historic background, Mehbooba commented on the unfurling of the tricolour on January 29, 2023, by Rahul, a function she and other like-minded parties n Kashmir skipped.

“Today history stands witness as RG unfurled the same flag albeit under completely different circumstances at a time when J&K has been turned into a military garrison. Assurances given by Indian constitution have been demolished by BJP & is a complete betrayal,” she wrote. “Despite these facts, BJP claims to have resolved the Kashmir issue by the unconstitutional abrogation of Article 370. Not only have they failed to address the issue but also gifted 2000 sq km of our territory to China.”

When Pandit Nehru flew to Srinagar on November 20, 1947, he spoke to a gathering in Lal Chowk. Later, he was taken in a procession to various parts of the Srinagar city. In comparison, Rahul’s function was brief and small and was attended by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir. Nehru had unfurled the flag near the Palladium Cinema, a few notches ahead of the Ghanta Ghar, where the tricolour was unruled today.
