    Amritsar: A video has gone viral showing a Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employee stopping a woman tourist with the national flag tattoo painted on her face from entering the Golden Temple, also known as the Harmandir Sahib.

    She claimed that she was denied entry over the tricolour row.

    The sewadar, an SGPC employee, who denied her entry, was heard purportedly saying “This is Punjab, not India” when the woman said this was the Indian flag.

    In the 40-second video clip, two people accompanying the woman were heard asking the guard “Is the Golden Temple not in India?” On being asked why the woman was not allowed to enter the holy shrine, he pointed out the flag painted on the woman’s face.

    The guard also tried to stop the woman and the man accompanying her from capturing the incident on their phone.

    Apologising for misbehaviour by its employees towards the visitors, SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Grewal told the media that this is a Sikh shrine. Every religious place has its own decorum.

    “We welcome everyone. We apologise if an official misbehaved. The flag on her face was not our national flag as it didn’t have Ashoka Chakra. It could have been a political flag.”

    Slamming the people for criticising the SGPC on the social media, he said, “Don’t these people know that Sikhs have played a great part in India’s Independence? Will anyone tweet about who sacrificed 90 out of 100 heads for the national flag? The Sikhs are being defamed intentionally.”

    New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Sunday she is worried the U.S. is headed toward a national ban on abortion, as state legislatures and courts move to squeeze abortion access across the country.

    “It’s every social issue that you disagree with, is it stem cell research, is it fertility, drugs, whatever it is, in this context, if we’re going to use the federal courts as a way to bar and ban access, we are looking at a national abortion ban and more,” Lujan Grisham said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

    The Democratic governor recently signed two bills into law protecting abortion providers and guaranteeing access to reproductive and gender-affirming care, just as a judge in neighboring Texas moved to suspend the FDA’s approval of mifepristone — one of two drugs used together to cause an abortion.

    New Delhi: The construction of national highways in 2022-23 was 10,993 kilometres, falling 13.70 per cent short of the government’s target of 12,500 km, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) latest data.

    The ministry awarded highways of 12,375 km length in the last financial year.

    While the pace of the construction of national highways (NH) in the country touched a record high of 37 kilometre a day in 2020-21, it slowed to 30.11 kilometre a day in 2022-23.

    The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) are primarily responsible for the construction of national highways and expressways in India.

    The ministry said it had constructed 10,237 km in 2019-20, 13,327 km in 2020-21 and 10,457 km in 2021-22.

    The historic indictment of the former president by the Manhattan district attorney brought hundreds of protesters last week to the Manhattan criminal courthouse.

    Meanwhile Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, a darling of progressive Democrats for his criminal justice reform policies, has drawn the ire of House Republicans, who say the top prosecutor should focus on violent offenders instead of Trump’s alleged involvement in a hush money scheme. They plan to hold a so-called “field hearing” in New York City next week on violent crime.

    Adams criticized House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for his hearing’s singular focus on New York City when “crime in congressional Republican areas per capita is through the roof.” He faulted southern states for the “proliferation of guns” flowing to major cities.

    The hearing is the latest move by House Republicans to pressure Bragg, who is pursuing 34 felony charges accusing Trump of falsifying business records to bury damaging allegations of an extramarital affair during the height of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty.

    The House GOP recently subpoenaed a former Manhattan prosecutor who criticized aspects of Bragg’s investigation. Bragg sued to block it, calling the move a “campaign of harassment.”

    The House Judiciary Committee’s scheduled hearing on violent crime pledges to “examine how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for New York City residents.”

    Adams said the committee hasn’t communicated with city officials to prepare for the hearing that will be held in a lower Manhattan federal building.

    “This is just an extension of Donald Trump campaigning and it really makes no sense,” Adams said.

    The National Guard prevented the protesters from reaching the amphitheater. Later in the afternoon, a teen climbed a flagpole and lowered the American flag, and the police arrested him.

    One of the protest organizers, Rennie Davis, told the police that the group had a legal protest permit and requested that the officers leave the park. The officers then beat Davis unconscious.

    Another protest organizer, Tom Hayden, encouraged protesters to return to the hotel. However, early in the evening, outside the hotel, police officers began attacking antiwar protesters with billy clubs and tear gas.

    Meanwhile, Sen. Abraham Ribicoff, in his nominating speech for McGovern, referred to “Gestapo tactics in the streets of Chicago” as televisions inside the convention hall showed the riots happening outside.

    Later at the convention, delegates voted for Humphrey to receive the presidential nomination.

    The police used tear gas to stop the remaining protesters and antiwar delegates from reaching the amphitheater.

    Officers arrested over 650 protesters during the convention.

    Kolkata: None of the senior Trinamool Congress leaders have come forward so far to air their views after the Election Commission of India on Monday withdrew its national party status, though there was hint that the ruling party in West Bengal might consider taking legal recourse in this matter.

    Just a one-liner came from party spokesman Kunal Ghosh, who said that it is too early to make any comment on the ECI’s decision.

    “The party leadership will review the development before making any detailed statement in this matter,” Ghosh said.

    Senior Trinamool leader and three-time Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy, while claiming that the party leadership will take a final decision in this matter, said that the ECI’s decision will surely be opposed.

    “Previously, a number of decisions taken by the Election Commission have proved to be wrong. The Commission has also been censored by the Supreme Court a number of times. Besides sending a deputation to the Commission, we might also consider taking the legal route in this matter,” Roy said.

    A senior member of the state Cabinet said on condition of anonymity that the apprehension about this development was there for some time now.

    “The party leadership has decided to announce a detailed blueprint of the action to be taken after thoroughly reviewing the decision of the Election Commission,” he said.

    Political observers, however, feel that although the Trinamool leadership has every right to challenge ECI’s decision in court, in all probability, that will not be an effective step since the Indian Constitution has given full liberty to the poll panel in such matters.

    Death knell for Trinamool: BJP

    The West Bengal unit of the BJP ridiculed the Trinamool Congress after the latter lost its national party status, terming the decision as a death knell for the party’s pan-India plans.

    State BJP’s President and Lok Sabha member Sukanta Majumdar said that this development was inevitable.

    “Trinamool Congress tried to retain its national party status by contesting polls in Goa, Tripura and Meghalaya, where it spent huge sums to lure the voters. But the voters rejected the Trinamool candidates as they realised that it would be a disaster if Trinamool comes to power. So this development was inevitable and it shattered the dreams of many parties like Trinamool who want see their leaders as the Prime Minister of the country,” Majumdar said.

    BJP’s national Vice President and Lok Sabha MP Dilip Ghosh said that the huge sums spent by Trinamool for election campaign in Goa, Tripura and Meghalaya were mainly the proceeds collected by the party leaders from different scams in West Bengal.

    “The people of these three states were aware of the plight of the common people of West Bengal, so they rejected the Trinamool Congress. This is the beginning of the end for Trinamool,” Ghosh said.

    New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday recognised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a national party and withdrew the national party status of the All India Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).

    In an order issued on Monday, the Commission also revoked the state party status granted to RLD in Uttar Pradesh, BRS in Andhra Pradesh, PDA in Manipur, PMK in Puducherry, RSP in West Bengal and MPC in Mizoram.

    The Commission said the AAP has been named as a national party based on its electoral performance in four states — Delhi, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.

    The Arvind Kejriwal-led party is in power in Delhi and Punjab.

    The poll panel said that the status of NCP, CPI and the Trinamool Congress as national political parties would be withdrawn.

    The BJP, Congress, CPI(M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), National People’s Party (NPP) and the AAP are now national parties.

    The Commission said that NCP and Trinamool Congress will be recognised as state parties in Nagaland and Meghalaya respectively based on their performance in the recently concluded assembly elections.

    It also granted “recognised state political party” status to the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in Nagaland, Voice of the People Party in Meghalaya and the Tipra Motha in Tripura.

    According to the rules, a political party is granted national status only if it is a recognised state party in four or more states or has 2% seats in Lok Sabha

    It should be noted that once a party loses its national party status, its members cannot use a common symbol in states where the party is not recognised. Hence, TMC candidates will not be able to use their party’s symbol for the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections.

    Reacting to the development, AAP’s Raghav Chadha tweeted, “In just 10 years @ArvindKejriwalji’s party has done what it took decades for big parties to do. Salute to every Aam Aadmi Party worker who shed blood, sweat, faced lathis, tear gas and water cannons for this party. Congratulations everyone for this new beginning”

    Gurugram: Gurugram Police arrested three Iranian nationals who allegedly posed as policemen and duped a Yemen national, police said on Monday.

    The Yemen national visited India for his wife’s medical treatment in Gurugram.

    The accused, who came to India on valid visas, were held from Delhi on April 5 and were taken on remand, police said.

    The Iranian nationals have been identified as Hossein Rezaeifard, Marammad Hussain Peerfalak and Abdol Salam.

    After investigating the accused, police learnt that the three used to target foreign nationals who were here for medical treatment.

    Posing as police officials, the accused used to approach the foreign nationals by posing as police and ask for their wallets to check if they are carrying any narcotic substance, following which they used to escape with the money in the wallets.

    In this case, the accused also duped the victim of 4300 (USD) and other documents. The victim told the police on January 15 he was on his way to the guest house when the trio posed as police officers, duped him and escaped the spot.

    “The accused were professional criminals and committed three similar types of crime in Delhi and Gurugram. They arrived in India 5/6 months ago and committed the crime. The accused are taken on police remand for further probe,” Preet Pal Sangwan, ACP (crime) said.

    SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department Civil Secretariat has issued a new government order on the selection criteria for engagement of faculty and other positions in all government medical colleges and government dental colleges of J&K. The new criteria have been formulated by a committee of principals from all government medical and dental colleges and have been accepted by the administrative department.

    The new selection criteria, issued under Government Order No.282-JK (HME) of 2023, dated April 4, 2023, are applicable for engagement on faculty posts, including Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor/Lecturers, and Registrars/Demonstrators/ Tutors in all Government Medical Colleges and Government Dental Colleges of J&K.

    The assessment criteria for selection for the post of Professor have been divided into three categories. The first category includes academic qualifications, with 50 points allotted on a pro-rata basis concerning marks in MBBS/BDS. The second category covers special attributes, such as teaching experience as Professor/Associate Professor in government-recognized institutions. The weightage for teaching experience will be calculated at one point for every completed quarter year beyond the basis of eligible teaching experience. The third category relates to research publications, with at least four publications required, including two as Associate Professors.

    However, the new government order has received criticism from doctors from national medical colleges across India. In response to the order, doctors have demanded an unambiguous equivalence to the scoring system to equate the marks or percentage of MBBS, or the implementation of a true competitive examination in the form of MCQs, to be put in place for these posts.

    “The Criteria of including MBBS Marks on the selection of Registrar & Consultants is highly impractical. This undermines all the extra qualifications & research work by Doctors applying for the job,” stated the FAIMA Doctors Association.

    The spokesperson for Resident Doctors Association GMC Srinagar has released a statement calling for the government of the union territory of J&K and its policy-making bodies to reconsider the decision and revoke the unjust order.

    The doctors have expressed concern that subjecting marks percentages from different evaluation systems to compete under a single umbrella will create an unjust and unethical platform for future recruitments of Registrars, leading to alarming repercussions and sidelining of genuine competitors. “It has been highlighted that there are differences in grading practices between universities and countries, which is the main reason for the discrepancy in MBBS marks.

    In light of this, there have been calls for a standardized MCQ paper to be used as the main criteria for selecting candidates for registrarship, medical officer, and other faculty positions,” said a doctor from a national medical college.

    The doctors have implored the government to take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that future recruitments are based on a fair and just system. It is unfair to rely solely on MBBS marks as the main criteria for selection, given the variability in grading practices. A standardized MCQ paper would be a more objective and fair way to evaluate candidates for these positions.

    This new government order has been deemed unjust and discriminatory towards the doctors who have trained at national medical colleges. They have demanded that the government take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that future recruitments are based on a fair and just system.
