Various forms of the legislation, dubbed the “FairTax Act,” have been around for decades and attracted little serious attention from Republican leaders. But a spokesperson for Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia, one of the 21 GOP holdouts who initially blocked McCarthy’s speakership bid and is a co-sponsor of the legislation, said McCarthy promised that the legislation would go through the committee process.

Forcing the discussion of the unpopular tax puts the GOP in a political bind that seems doomed to repeat itself for the House’s slim majority. McCarthy must walk a tightrope between appeasing the renegade factions of his caucus and disassociating the party from policy proposals that could hurt Republicans at the ballot box.

The newly anointed chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), said he’s committed to having a committee hearing on the legislation in which members can have an open and transparent debate.

Supporters of the legislation argue that it would create a fairer, more transparent tax system. It would eliminate federal income, payroll and estate taxes and replace them with a 23 percent — or depending on the way you calculate it, 30 percent — national sales tax.

But many Republican members of Ways and Means are so far treating the legislation like it’s radioactive.

“I have no opinion yet,” said Rep. Carol Miller (R-W.Va.) when asked about the bill.

“Let me withhold that for now,” said Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa, who is one of the 10 new GOP members to join the committee this Congress.

    Others were more blunt.

“There’s never going to be a vote for it,” said Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), a policy wonk on the committee who proceeded to give his view of how FairTax is technically flawed. Schweikert said a more effective version of the idea would involve taxing goods at each point that value is added to them in the supply chain, rather than all at once at the point of sale.

Sensing the political peril of the legislation, longtime tax critics from The Wall Street Journal editorial board to Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform have launched their own offensive against the legislation.

“The Fair Tax isn’t happening and won’t survive regular order, despite assertions from Democrats like Chuck Schumer and President Biden,” ATR said in an email blast. “In fact, House co-sponsorship of the Fair Tax Act is at a 20-year low. Support has been dwindling for the past decade, dropping by two-thirds since 2013.”

But the chief sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), issued his own broadside disputing what he called the “myths” surrounding the bill.

Taking on one of the biggest criticisms — that a national sales tax would hit lower-income folks as well as retirees particularly hard, while the rich would benefit disproportionately — Carter’s release said: “The FairTax is the only progressive tax reform bill currently pending before Congress.”

“Each household will receive a monthly prebate based on federal poverty levels and household size that will allow families to purchase necessary goods, such as food, shelter, and medicine, essentially tax-free. This is similar to our current individual exemption and refundable tax credit system.”

Democrats aren’t wasting time debating the fine points.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, in a Wednesday press conference, depicted the legislation as part of an extreme Republican agenda that would also target Social Security and other entitlement benefits.

“I believe it would cause the next Great Depression if we would impose it. Thank God there are firewalls in Leader Jeffries and Democrats in the House.” Schumer said of the national sales tax, contending that data shows the tax would raise the cost of a household by $125,000, the cost of a car by $10,000 and the average grocery bill by $3,500 a year.

A hearing on the FairTax bill wouldn’t be unprecedented. The Ways and Means Committee held one in 2011 when former Republican Rep. Dave Camp chaired the panel. It mostly faded from sight after that.

Camp, who is now at PwC, cited some pressing questions he thinks the legislation raises.

“Will it fill the revenue? Is it regressive? And what happens to state income tax?” he said in an interview this week.

  • Eric Adams’ annual New York City address underpins message for national Democrats

Eric Adams’ annual New York City address underpins message for national Democrats

    [ad_1]

    image

Adams is the latest in a long line of politicians to focus his rhetoric on the working class. His predecessor, Bill de Blasio, at one point promoted the slogan Working People First. However, Adams has repeatedly stressed that his upbringing by a single mother who worked cleaning houses and his first career as a cop give him insight into the plight of millions of New Yorkers that other politicians can lack.

“Don’t let it fool you — I may wear nice suits,” said Adams, who was dressed for the occasion in a dark suit offset by a white pocket square and magenta tie. “But I’m a blue-collar cat.”

On the subject of crime, which largely impacts low-income communities, Adams has urged fellow Democrats to talk more frankly about the successes of policing and the immediate boost that solving crimes can provide to the public’s confidence in government.

“The party, I believe, articulates long-term solutions to a problem. And that’s fine to do so and we should have a long-term plan. … But people are saying, what about right now?” he said during a Wednesday appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “How are we going to intercede with that 16-year-old child that was stabbed, or that mother who was shot by a random bullet?”

During Thursday’s speech, Adams touted a recent drop in crime in New York City, which he has attributed to his support for the NYPD, the relaunch of a controversial plainclothes unit and his focus on seizing illegal guns.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported this effort, especially Governor [Kathy] Hochul and President [Joe] Biden,” the mayor said. “They understand that fighting the scourge of illegal guns is a top priority for our city.”

Adams has appeared happy to clash with left-leaning members of the party who are skeptical of the NYPD. And he pledged Thursday to focus during the upcoming year on shoplifting, robberies and burglaries while also pushing — again — for changes to the state’s criminal justice laws in Albany with an eye toward keeping a small number of repeat offenders in custody.

“We know who they are, and we need to get them off our streets,” he said.

Other planks of his working people’s agenda include apprenticeships and career training to steer more students into higher paying jobs. The mayor noted that the unemployment rate for Black New Yorkers was three times higher than white residents.

He also pledged to provide free internet for more low-income New Yorkers while streamlining the process of receiving food assistance and other social service programs from the city. Health officials will begin providing free health care to those who have spent more than seven days in a homeless shelter and will begin to roll out centers specifically geared to residents experiencing mental health challenges. The city will also seek legislation that would allow New Yorkers to retain public benefits for six months after starting a new job, and will expand access to fresh food by beefing up city investment in a program to help connect people with groceries.

“You can’t have Whole Foods in Park Slope and junk food in Brownsville,” the mayor said in one of many off-script remarks that drew applause from the crowd of politicians who gathered for the speech.

Adams’ effort to define his brand of Democratic politics comes as he seeks other wins on the national level.

On Thursday, the mayor reiterated his call for the federal government to provide aid for the more than 40,000 asylum-seekers who have arrived in New York City, and plugged the city’s bid to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

And on Thursday he made other major policy announcements, including a citywide composting program and rezonings in Manhattan and Staten Island.

“City government must work to improve the public good, support an economy that works for all, and care for the working people who make it possible,” Adams said as he rounded out his address. “Jobs, safety, housing, and care — without these pillars of support, cities crumble, institutions fall, society weakens. We will not allow that to happen in New York.”

  • January 26, a National Day or Invasion Day for Australia?

January 26, a National Day or Invasion Day for Australia?

    [ad_1]

Australians are ambivalent towards its National Day or Foundation Day which also falls on Jan 26.

While Indians celebrate Jan 26, to commemorate the establishment of their Constitution in January 1950, Australians celebrate their National Day on Jan 26, because the colonial British arrived in Australia on Jan 26.

The day marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove and the Union Flag being raised by Arthur Phillip, proclaiming British sovereignty.

The National Day celebrations have been continuing since early 1800s.

By 1935  Australia Day, was being celebrated all over Australia.  But soon after one also saw Indigenous Australians marking the day as Invasion Day.

The problem continued as people felt that aboriginals must be given a place in country’s identity. The National Day thus became a rallying point to remember the hardships felt by the Aboriginals under the Colonialists.

However, for long time now the Indigenous people of Australia have been holding it as Invasion Day, Survival Day to highlight the fact that the land of the indigenous people were taken away by the conquerors.

There is also a demand that the date be changed or it should not be celebrated but those who want the date changed are still in the minority. Many want that these celebrations should include more and more indigenous people and items, as all of them are part of Australia.

The problem actually arises from the fact that the Constitution of Australia does not recognise the Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders, or the original occupants of Australia.

Even this 2023, large protests took place and marches were carried out from Parliament House to Federation Square and many other parts of the country.

The idea was to protest against Australia Day and highlight the alleged injustices faced by Aboriginal people.

The Aborgines want power and feel that they are the sovereign of the country as it is their land.

The problem would clearly be solved if the Constitution was amended with people voting that they want to recognise indigenous Australians in the Constitution.

At the time of framing of the Australian constitution by the European settlers the land belonged only to them and the  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were not considered as part of the new nation.

The original settlers are thus “missing” from the Constitution of Australia itself. It is only now to strengthen the country and its unity that amendments to the Constitution are being thought of.

The recognition it is felt will lead to greater unity, democracy and protect the right of all Australians sharing equally as citizens of the country reconciling all their differences.
