There should be no politics over terrorism: Ghulam Nabi Azad

Jammu: DPAP chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said there should be no politics over terrorism and that terror in any part of the world is not in the interest of public.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also credited the BJP-led Centre for bringing peace to the region, but said several things like the abrogation of Article 370 and reconstituting Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories should not have been done.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party event here, Azad said, “Terrorism in any part of the world, including Jammu and Kashmir, is not in the interest of the public. It is the public which suffers huge losses and are forced into poverty and illiteracy. Before terrorism, J&K was a prime destination of tourists from around the globe.”

He said tourism has revived over the past two years as peace is beneficial to everyone. “There should be no politics over terrorism,” he underlined.

The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) leader also credited the Centre for “ending the culture of strikes and stone-pelting” in the Union territory (UT).

On the growing terror incidents in Rajouri and Poonch district of Jammu region where 26 security personnel and nine civilians were killed in eight terror attacks since October 2021, he said it is a cause of concern for the entire country, people and the border state.

“Three major incidents took place this year in the Rajouri-Poonch belt, consuming innocent lives. Such incidents should not have happened,” he said, adding that people should join hands with security agencies to root out terrorism from the region.

Azad also reiterated his demand for holding of early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and said an elected government is much better than the Lt Governor administration as members of the legislative assembly in 90 constituencies can help address the problems of the people in a better way.

It’s wrong: Ghulam Nabi Azad on Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

    [ad_1]

Kathua: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday termed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha a “wrong thing” and does not bode well for democracy.

Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. He was later disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case.

“I am against this, whether he is Rahul Gandhi or Lalu Prasad Yadav or any other MP or MLA. It is against natural justice that on one side a judge delivered a judgement and on the other the MP or MLA is disqualified,” Azad told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Kathua district.

It is a wrong thing, he said.

“Earlier, the rule was that he or she won’t be disqualified till the last court does not award him punishment. There are 20 steps before reaching the last court. This does not go well with the democracy,” the former Congress leader said.

“Earlier Lalu Prasad Yadav was disqualified and now Rahul Gandhi. This way, the entire parliament and assemblies will become vacant,” he said, adding, “There should be a separate yardstick for political leaders.”

Raising the pitch against the BJP over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha, Congress leaders and workers held protests across the country on Sunday, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accusing the government of “trying to silence” a “martyr’s son” for raising the voice of people.

The BJP, however, slammed the Congress and asked if it was agitating against the country’s Constitution or the law under which Rahul Gandhi was convicted or to justify his remarks against the entire backward community of the country.

  • Ghulam Nabi Azad Sends Legal Notice To Jairam Ramesh For His Derogatory Remarks

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former colleagues, Jairam Ramesh and Ghulam Nabi Azad are at loggerheads once again, as Azad has slapped the Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh with a defamation notice for reportedly calling him a “slave”, “Mir Jafar” and a “vote- cutter”.

In the notice, which has been sent through Azad’s legal counsel Naresh Kumar  Gupta, the DAP chief seeks compensation of Rs 2 crore from the Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh for causing damage to his “unblemished reputation”.

“That you Mr Jairam Ramesh (Notice Receiver)… always remain in search of occasion to tarnish and harm the growing dignity, respect, honour conferred upon him (Azad) at national level, by way of repeated posts in your Twitter account word ‘Ghulam’ in order to inflict injury to lower him in the estimation of others, soon after Mr Azad was honoured by Padam Bhushan Award,” the notice read.

Its pertinent to mention that  earlier in January , the senior Congress leader took at jibe at Ghulam Nabi Azad’s DAP by calling it “ Disappearing Azad Party” after the exit of the leaders from the newly formed DAP.

Earlier during Bharat Jodo Yatra’s J&K leg, Ramesh had called DAP chief “Mir Jafar” and alleged that he had been propped up by the BJP to cut the Congress’ votes in J&K.

The notice emphasized that the name calling was a deliberate attempt to defame Azad in public and tarnish his image and said that the Congress General Secretary had committed an offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 500 ( punishment for defamation) and was liable to pay monetary compensation.

Mr Ramesh used the name “Ghulam” that translates to “slave”, deliberately and intentionally, to defame the leader in the public, Gupta said in the notice.

The notice stated that the “imputation and defamatory aspersions” remarks made against Azad in press statements were based purely on malice, and have caused the DPAP chief “mental agonies, torture, harassment” and tarnished his image, “which can’t be repaired”.

Mir Jafar, who served as the commander of the Bengal army under Siraj-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, betrayed him during the Battle of Plassey, paving the way for British rule in India. Since then, his name has become a synonym for “traitor.”

Gupta advised Jairam Ramesh to tender an “unconditional apology” through print-electronic media and on social media to Azad, or through any sort of communication, within two weeks from the date of receipt of the legal notice.

  • J&K: Spare poor from encroachment drives, appeals Ghulam Nabi Azad

J&K: Spare poor from encroachment drives, appeals Ghulam Nabi Azad

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Democratic Azad Party (DAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad Saturday demanded a formal order from the Raj Bhavan to spare the poor in the ongoing anti-encroachment drive.

He also announced his party was putting on hold its proposed UT-wide agitation against evictions as he has been given assurances the poor will not be evicted.

“I met Union Home minister Amit Shah and requested him that poor people should not be evicted from their houses, or poor shopkeepers from their shops through which they earn their livelihoods. The J-K LG has also given a statement that the poor will be spared. So, we have decided to postpone our agitation on their assurances,” Azad said, addressing his party workers at Sonwar here.

Since the eviction notice came, many political parties issued statements but none came out on the roads to protest. “I am proud of my party and my party colleagues that they protested across J-K.”

Earlier in the day, his party members took out a protest march from the party office at Sonwar and blocked the main road near Sonwar Chowk. They demanded a rollback of the eviction order.

Welcoming the statement by J-K LG, Azad said it cannot be any government’s policy to make its own people homeless. “Most of these people are poor. There are 50-60 lakh households, which is half of our population. It cannot be a policy of any government to make people homeless,” the former Congress general secretary said.

He said conflicting statements by the J-K administration have created confusion, and therefore the Raj Bhavan should issue a formal order making it clear that poor people and small shopkeepers will not be evicted.

“A written order from the Raj Bhavan should be issued which notifies how much land a person should have under his possession which can be spared. I think 99 percent of the people will come under that ambit,” he added.

He said lakhs of canals of land are illegally occupied in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, and the government provides them electricity, water, roads, schools, and hospitals.
Whichever party is in power be it Congress, or the BJP, or the AAP, their biggest poll promise is regularisation of such land, he said.

“If it can happen to the costliest land in the country, then why not in J-K, the former J-K chief minister said.

The DAP chairman said his party was not in favor of the illegal occupation of government land by rich and influential people. But there should not pick and choose while dealing with the big fishes, he said, adding, influential people from any political party, “even from mine”, should not be spared.

He said some people with as little as one or two marlas of land have also got notices. “Such people have small shops on that to sustain their life. They are not businessmen like Ambani or Adani.”

“I respect both of them as they have played a role in the country’s economy, in giving employment. I took their names only to make a point that there are no businessmen like them. We have very small businessmen who earn their livelihood for their sustenance,” he said.

He said this government has done a lot of good things, but “I do not understand, why they are trying to put water, through the land issue, over their good deeds”.

Asked about a reported J-K chief secretary directive to officers to check if anybody making negative statements on the anti-encroachment drive has himself or herself encroached upon government land, Azad said no one can be stopped from making any statements in a democracy.

“No one can suppress the voice of the people,” he added.

  • Those who have grabbed huge chunk of land illegally must not be spared: Ghulam Nabi Azad

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 04: Democratic Azad Party (DAP) Chairman and former J&K chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday said that those who have grabbed a huge chunk of land must not be spared in the ongoing anti-encroachment drive across the Union Territory.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that in democracy, nobody can suppress the voices of people.

While welcoming the statement of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, he asked his party workers to end their agitation as LG has assured that poor will not be touched.

“We are in favour of the government’s step against those who have grabbed a huge chunk of land illegally. We urge the government not to touch people who have set up their business units or shops on just one or two marlas of land so that they are not forced to starve,” he said.

He added such measures are certainly not aimed at getting political benefits, but would go against the incumbent government that has done a tremendous job on ground by putting an end to stone pelting, giving a boost to tourism sector and other related things—(KNO)
