Dhanbad: The police on Thursday rescued a youth, a resident of Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, from a rampaging mob that claimed that beef was found in his house.

Six people including three police personnel were injured and the force used batons to disperse the attackers who also ransacked police vehicles and set on fire some goods kept in front of the house of the accused.

Slaughter of bovine animals and selling their meat are banned in Jharkhand.

The situation is under control now, Nirsa Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Pitamber Singh Kherwar said.

The incident occurred at Bhurkunda locality under Nirsa police station, around 190 km from the state capital Ranchi, where some villagers reportedly found a slaughtered cow and its meat in the house of a person identified as Nasruddin Ansari.

Soon, a mob assembled there and started throwing stones at the house. Some household goods kept in front of it were torched.

Ansari and his family members manage to flee but his son Sahabuddin was caught by the mob and he was tied to a tree, police said.

The situation came under control after Superintendent of Police (rural) Reeshma Rameshan reached the spot and assured the villagers to take action against the culprit.

Nirsa MLA Aparna Sengupta also reached the village and tried to pacify the villagers.

Later, The MLA, administrative officials, and the police held a meeting with villagers to ensure peace in the village.

  • Four Muslim men acquitted from 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blast case

Four Muslim men acquitted from 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blast case

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday acquitted four convicts in the Jaipur serial bomb blast case which rocked the state capital on May 13, 2008.

A division bench of Justices Pankaj Bhandari and Sameer Jain acquitted these four convicts who had presented 28 appeals in the High Court. The hearing on this entire case was going on for 48 days.

In its verdict, the bench reportedly said that the investigating officer did not have legal knowledge. Therefore, instructions have been given to the DGP to take action against the investigating officer as well. The court has also asked the Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry into the investigating officer.

Syed Sadat Ali, the lawyer representing the accused, said that the High Court has termed the entire theory of ATS wrong, which is why the accused have been acquitted.

He said that four accused were sentenced to death by the sessions court. “We had come to the High Court against that decision. One of the accused is a minor. The court has accepted that he was 16 years old at the time of the incident. The court acquitted the accused by saying that there is no proof against the accused. ATS and Prosecution have not been able to prove the allegations. Neither planting bombs has been proved nor was it proved that the accused had bought the cycle.”

“The court made strong remarks about the Investigation Officer while giving the verdict. The court has ordered DGP Rajasthan to take action against Rajendra Singh Nayan, Jai Singh and retired IPS officer Mahendra Chaudhary, who were the investigating officers of the entire case. In the 10-page judgment, the court said that the theory of the police does not match with the entire case.”

On May 13, 2008, there were serial bomb blasts at 8 places in the walled city. In these, 71 people were killed, while 185 were injured. The court found Mohd Saif, Saifur Rahman, Sarwar Azmi and Mohd Salman guilty of murder, sedition and the Explosives Act.

A total of 13 people were made accused in this case by the police. Three accused are still absconding, while two are lodged in jails of Hyderabad and Delhi. The remaining two criminals have been killed in the Batla House encounter in Delhi. The four accused were lodged in Jaipur jail and were sentenced to death by the lower court.

Former BJP state chief Satish Poonia said: “The acquittal of all four convicted in such a big offense by the high court raises doubts on the advocacy of the Ashok Gehlot government of Rajasthan.

“The manner in which the evidence was presented by the ATS, and later it was clipped and edited and the manner in which the court said that the prosecution was not done properly and the evidence did not come in a proper manner, raises doubts on the side of the investigation.”

Hate Speeches: Muslim intellectuals who met RSS chief disappointed

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Muslim intellectuals, who held a meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) supremo Mohan Bhagwat, are upset over the affirmative action on hate speeches by the Hindu organisation.

“There is virtually no let up in Consistent Barrage of hate speeches, calls for genocide and acts of violence against Muslims,” said the Muslim intellectuals in a letter after the March 7 meeting.

The letter also draws attention towards the “anti-Muslim” marches by Hindu bodies in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra against the minority community which were “full of hatred” and included call for boycott of Muslim businesses.

The Muslim leaders urged the RSS chief to speak on the issue and ask the state government to take strictest action against hate-mongers. The letter is written by SY Qureshi, Zu Shah, Najeeb Jung, Saeed Sherwani and Shahid Siddiqui.

According to sources, the response comes after eminent Muslim citizens and religious organisations met RSS leaders in March at the residence of former Delhi L-G Najeeb Jung and discussed the issue of harmony within the communities.

The Muslim side openly wanted an appeal from the RSS and its affliates against the lynchings besides an end to the hate propaganda on television channels daily.

Indresh Kumar, Krishna Gopal and Ram Lal represented the RSS side.

During the meeting, the RSS had raised the issue of cow slaughter and use of the word ‘kafir’ for the majority in India.

To this, the Muslim side suggested declaring the cow as a national animal for a uniform law on the issue and added that they will ask their community not to use the word ‘kafir’ publicly.

  • Karnataka: Rollback of Muslim quota likely to turn into crisis

Karnataka: Rollback of Muslim quota likely to turn into crisis

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Withdrawal of 4 per cent reservation for Muslim community by the ruling BJP government is likely to snowball into a crisis-situation in the poll-bound Karnataka.

As the major political parties engage in a war of words over the issue, members of the Muslim community came out in the open on Tuesday to protest against the BJP government’s decision.

The ruling BJP had withdrawn reservation of Muslims under 2B category and sent a proposal to the Centre. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced that the 4 per cent quota for Muslim will be given to Lingayats and Vokkaligas.

Chief Minister Bommai maintained that the reservation quota for Muslims will be intact as they will be moved to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota.

Muslim groups and political parties have come to the streets lately demanding that their quota should remain untouched. The protests have been staged in Belagavi, Chitradurga and Mandya cities of Karnataka.

The Minority Unit of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and Muslim community members had taken out a protest march in Belagavi. The agitators raised slogans against the ruling BJP party. They had also submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner’s office.

Members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a protest on the road in Chitradurga raising slogans against the government. SDPI had built a platform near DC Circle for the protest. As the police denied permission, the protest was staged on the road.

Various Muslim organisations and SDPI staged a protest against withdrawal of reservation. The protest was staged near the Vishveshvaraya statue in Mandya.

Former CM and JD (S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy raised a concern that what if Muslim community takes to the streets like the Banjara community? Who will be responsible for the consequences?

“I appreciate the conduct of Muslim community at this hour. The BJP government had taken decisions as per whims and fancies. If Muslim community members had come to streets angered by withdrawal of their 4 per cent reservation, innocent people would have lost their lives,” he reiterated.

Kumaraswamy further stated that the national parties should not indulge in creating conflicting situations between castes. Both parties are indulging in this, he added.

The protest by Banjara community members over a new reservation decision by the BJP government turned violent in Shikaripura of Shivamogga district. The agitators had pelted stones on former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s residence and even attacked police.

  • No Constitutional provision for Muslim reservation: Amit Shah

No Constitutional provision for Muslim reservation: Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Two days after the BJP government in Karnataka scrapped four per cent OBC reservation for Muslims, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday defended the move, saying there is no provision in the Constitution to provide reservations on the basis of religion.

Addressing a rally in poll-bound Karnataka’s Bidar, he slammed the Congress for providing reservation on the basis of religion in the state.

Shah said that the reservation for Muslims introduced by the previous Congress-led government in the state was not as per Constitution.

In its last Cabinet meeting before the polls, the Basavaraj Bommai government on Friday scrapped the four per cent OBC reservation for Muslims and distributed it to two dominant communities – Veerashaiva-Lingayats and Vokkaligas.

The Cabinet decided to move OBC Muslims to the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.

Shah said the Congress provided reservation to the minority as part of its polarisation politics. “The BJP scrapped that reservation and provided reservations to Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities,” he added.

He also inaugurated the ‘Garota Shaheed Smarak’ and a memorial of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel during his visit to Karnataka on Sunday. The 20-ft tall statue of Sardar Patel is a symbol of his significant role played by the country’s first Home Minister, he said.

He also highlighted the sacrifice of people in Gorata village who were allegedly killed by Razakars of Nizam, the ruler of Hyderabad State, for hosting a 2.5-ft tall tricolor. Sheh said now, a 103-ft tall tricolour has been hoisted on the same land.

The Union Home Minister also targeted Congress party what he calls vote bank politics. He alleged that the party never commemorated the martyrs of independence and Hyderabad liberation.

“Due to Congress’s politics of polarisation and their greed for vote bank, they never commemorated the people who sacrificed themselves for independence and Hyderabad mukti,” he said.

  • Madani to move court against Karnataka decision on Muslim quota

Madani to move court against Karnataka decision on Muslim quota

    [ad_1]

Saharanpur: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, has said that it will challenge in court the Karnataka government’s decision to remove Muslims from the 2B category of ‘Other Backward Classes’ (OBCs), which gave them 4 per cent reservation.

Maulana Mahmood Madani, president of the organisation, termed the move a “grave injustice meted out to Muslims”.

Madani told reporters in Deoband that: “The decision does not go hand-in-hand with Prime Minister Modi’s Pasmanda Muslim upliftment. The Prime Minister, on one hand, is promoting development policy for the marginalised section of Muslims, and on the other hand, his party’s government in Karnataka is snatching away the reservation from them and distributing it among other classes.”

The 4 per cent OBC Muslim quota has been divided between the Vokkaligas and Lingayats. Muslims eligible for quota have been categorised under economically weaker sections (EWS) now.

He argued that various official statistics and reports confirm the fact that the Muslims of India are economically and educationally at the lowest rung of development.

“Hence, no community deserves reservation more than the Muslims,” Madani said.

Calling the move as “the worst example of electoral opportunism and appeasement”, Madani said, “This move only aims to create discord between the two communities. We will approach the court against it.”

  • Owaisi slams BJP for scrapping 4% Muslim quota in Karnataka

Owaisi slams BJP for scrapping 4% Muslim quota in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Karnataka government for abolishing the 4 percent reservation for Muslims in the state.

He termed the decision as part of PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Muslim outreach’ program.

“Karnataka BJP govt removes reservation for poor Muslims in education & jobs This is @narendramodi’s “Muslim outreach” & love for Pasmanda Muslims. Whether it’s hijab or reservations, the target is Muslims’ progress in education & employment,” he tweeted.

The Karnataka government on Friday announced its decision to scrap the four percent quota for minorities and added it to the existing quota of two dominant communities of the poll-bound state.

The 4 per cent reservation given to Muslims under 2B classification of the OBC category will now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota of Vokkaligas and Lingayats for whom two new reservation categories of 2C and 2D were created during the Belagavi Assembly Session last year.

The cabinet decided to bring the religious minorities under the EWS category.

The decision comes ahead of the Assembly elections.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting on Friday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the religious minorities quota would be done away with and brought under the 10 percent pool of the EWS category without any change of condition.

“The four percent (reservation for minorities) will be divided into two between 2C and 2D. The four percent reservation for the Vokkaligas and others will be enhanced to six percent and Veerashaiva Panchamasali and others (Lingayats), who are getting five percent reservation will now get seven percent,” the CM explained.

The Cabinet had abolished the 3A and 3B categories of reservation for Vokkaligas and Lingayats respectively and replaced them with two new categories of 2C and 2D last December.

Defending the decision to abolish the quota for Muslims, Bommai said there was no constitutional provision for religious minorities.

Citing a court verdict striking down the reservation provided for minorities in Andhra Pradesh, the CM said the architect of the Indian Constitution B R Ambedkar too had said that reservations were for caste.

“However, we cannot drop that community entirely. With a view that there should not be any problem, the religious minorities…if someone challenges reservation to them, we decided to take a proactive decision. In fact they will go from 4 per cent to the 10 percent pool of the EWS group without any change of condition,” Bommai explained.

Muslims are divided into three reservation categories 1, 2A and 2B.

The extremely backward religious minorities, who form the sub-sects of Muslims such as Pinjara, Nadaf, Daroji, Chapparband and are enlisted in category 1, will remain undisturbed and in the same reservation list.

Similarly, the government did not touch the Muslim communities under 2A category.

“Some other Muslim sub-sects in the 2B category will not be disturbed. They will only be moved to the EWS quota on the same conditions,” Bommai said.

There are some more small backward communities, who find mention in the Backward Commission’s report.

“They never figured in any list including the backward list. They are not in any category. Regarding them, the Backward Commission has mentioned in its second list. I will study the report in detail. Our government will take further decision on it in the coming cabinet.

Already, a recommendation has been sent to the Centre to include two shepherd communities Kadu Kuruba’ and Gonda Kuruba’ spread over four districts in the ST category.

Further, the Union government has made some references to two to three communities including Kadu Gollaru and Koli communities seeking the opinion of the department.

Bommai also said that the government will notify the communities under the EWS category.

Also, a decision was taken with regard to the SC community that 6 percent reservation would be given to SC left sub-category, 5.5 per cent to SC right, 4.5 per cent to touchables and 1 per cent to others.

Hailing the announcement, Adichunchanagiri Math pontiff and Vokkaliga leader Nirmalanandanatha Swami said the demand was made for 12 per cent reservation keeping in view the condition of the community.

“Given the situation, the government has increased the reservation from four per cent to six per cent for which we thank the government. We welcome the move,” he said.

The Panchamasali community of the Lingayat sect and the Vokkaligas have been demanding a hike in reservation for quite a long time.

Muslim players in English Premier League granted break for fasting during Ramzan

    [ad_1]

The referees in the Premier League and English Football Association (EFL) have reportedly been asked to pause evening matches in the United Kingdom during the holy month of Ramzan to allow Muslim players to break their fast.

According to the British “Sky Sports” network, the Referees Committee of the English Football Association (EFL) instructed the referees to allow the players to break their fast during the matches that will be held in the evening in Ramzan.

It is worth noting that some of the most known footballers in the country, including Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, and Chelsea’s N’golo Kante, are expected to take part in the dawn-to-dusk fast that this month begins, in compliance with their faith.

As per media reports, the referees will give the players the opportunity to drink water or soft drinks when it is time to break the fast.

Before kick-off, officials will be encouraged to identify any players who may need to break their fast during the match.

It is noteworthy that the English Premier League competitions will witness three full rounds, in addition to six postponed matches throughout the month of Ramzan, with a total of 36 matches within three weeks.

The English Premier League previously witnessed a similar situation on April 26, 2021, when referee Graham Scott stopped the match between Leicester City and Crystal Palace in order to allow space for the players— Wesley Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyate o break the fast, but this was not on official instructions.

It was believed to be the first time that an English top-level fixture had been paused to allow Muslim players to eat and drink mid-game, with Fofana tweeting his thanks afterwards.
