SC slams Karnataka govt’s call to scrap 4% Muslim quota

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court slammed the Karnataka government’s decision to scrap the 4% Other Backward Classes (OBC) Muslim quota on Thursday, stating the action is based on “absolutely fallacious assumptions.”

“The Karnataka government’s decision to increase 2% quotas for Vokkaliga and Lingayat each while eliminating the 4% OBC quota for Muslims appears to be shaky and flawed,” the Supreme Court remarked.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, told the Supreme Court that no admission or appointment will be made on the basis of the notification till the next date of hearing on April 18.

    MS Education Academy

Last month, the Karnataka government abolished the 4% OBC reservation for Muslims and reallocated it evenly among the strong Vokkaliga and Lingayat populations. Muslims who qualify for quotas are now classified under the economically weaker sections (EWS).

  • Maulana Azad’s erasure from NCERT books due to his Muslim identity: NCP

Maulana Azad’s erasure from NCERT books due to his Muslim identity: NCP

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to ‘erase’ the name of India’s first Education Minister and Bharat Ratna, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, from history because he was a Muslim.

NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said that the BJP-led government at the Centre is using the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) to wipe out Maulana Azad’s identity and his glorious contributions from India’s education system.

Citing instances, he said a para in the first chapter of the old Class XI NCERT political science textbook said: “The Constituent Assembly had eight major Committees on different subjects. Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad or Ambedkar chaired these Committees.”

    MS Education Academy

“However, in the new version of the same textbook by NCERT, the name of Maulana Azad has been omitted and the same sentence now reads: ‘Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel or B.R. Ambedkar chaired these committees’. This is truly unfortunate,” Crasto said.

Suspecting a systematic conspiracy to delete Maulana Azad from history, the NCP leader pointed out how last year the Minority Affairs Ministry had abruptly discontinued the ‘Maulana Azad Fellowship’, which was started in 2009 (by the former UPA government) to provide financial help to students from six notified minorities for a period of five years.

The NCERT comes under the Government of India which is currently led by the BJP, and therefore the question that comes to the mind is whether they are seeking to obliterate the name of India’s first Education Minister because of his religion, Crasto said.

“There appears no other reason why they would do this to the first Education Minister of Independent India and one of our leading freedom fighters. The NCERT must clarify and answer to the citizens why Maulana Azad’s name is missing in the new version of the textbook, and how it will rectify this error,” Crasto said.

Maulana Azad, a distinguished Islamic scholar, author, academician and a prominent freedom fighter, was elected as the youngest President of Indian National Congress aged 35, and later led the historic Khilafat Movement.

After Independence, Maulana Azad served as India’s first Education Minister for over 10 years, during which he laid the foundations for the country’s massive academic network. Acknowledging his contributions, his birthday – November 11 – is celebrated as National Education Day.

Muslim man poisons children, kills self after UP officials threaten to demolish home

    [ad_1]

A 50-year-old man named Mohammed Saleem, a resident of Shadi ki Madaiyan, Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh consumed poison along with his two children aged eight and six on Friday after administration sleuths arbitrarily informed him his house would be demolished.

The man and his daughter died on Saturday morning however, his son survived and is admitted to a local hospital.

The tragic incident took place after revenue officials allegedly visited Saleem’s house and told him that his house would be bulldozed as it was allegedly built on government land.

    MS Education Academy

The deceased was working at a tyre repair shop in his locality.

According to the locals, in 2016, Saleem purchased land for Rs 1,90,00 and built a house on it.

According to a report published in The Times of India, the land he purchased, used to be part of a dried-up pond.

Notably, 20 other people had purchased land next to Saleem which is part of the dried-up pond. They were unaware that the land was given on lease to the seller by the revenue department.

“In 2021, Saleem along with 20 people were served legal notices by the court of tehsildar in which they were asked that their houses have encroached on Garam Samaj land, however, the case related it is still pending in court and no further order was delivered as yet,” Sub-divisional Magistrate Nirankar Singh was quoted by TOI.

As per a TOI report, Mehtab Jahan, wife of Saleem, claimed that several officials visited their house and told her husband that their house would be demolished soon as per court order.

She further alleged that previously they had received a notice from the tehsildar court demanding them a ransom of Rs 64 lakh.

“I have lost my daughter and husband. I want justice from the government,” she said.

Relative of Saleem alleged that, on Thursday, the revenue officials took Saleem’s thumbprint on some documents however, the officials are denying it now.

“As Saleem is not a reader, they took his thumbprint on some documents, nothing of which he understood,” said a relative.

  • ‘2nd largest Muslim population..’: Sitharaman denies violence against minorities

‘2nd largest Muslim population..’: Sitharaman denies violence against minorities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday slammed the reports appearing in Western media about violence against minorities in India, especially Muslims, saying that those commenting on such issues should come and see the reality on the ground as India has the second largest Muslim population in the world and the minorities are not only growing exponentially, they have been incentivised and doing their business in the country.

In an interaction with Adam Posen of the Peterson Institute of International Economics in Washington DC, during her ongoing tour of the US, the finance minister gave Pakistan’s example, saying that it was created as an Islamic country which had promised to treat minorities equally, however there the minorities and even several Muslim sects, which don’t agree with the majority community, have been “decimated and diminished in numbers”.

“In sharp contrast, minorities in India have only grown in numbers since 1947 and have been doing their businesses comfortably…They have been getting scholarships. India has the second largest Muslim population in the world. The answer also lies in the fact that investors have been coming to India. I will say that please come and see for yourself the reality, rather than listening to those who haven’t even seen what is happening on the ground,” she said during the interaction, which focussed on “resilience of the Indian economy amid tightening of Indian conditions”.

    MS Education Academy

She was responding to a question by Posen on violence against Muslims in India as reported by Western media and also opposition MPs losing their status (referring to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Parliament).

Meanwhile on the Indian economy’s resilience, the finance minister said that “it is due to the enterprising nature of Indians. Despite suffering and loss of lives, we took up Covid-19 as a challenge and helped each other. The government extended support to people through targeted approach and undertook humanitarian steps.”

Speaking on supply chain disruptions, the finance minister said, “Given the shocks witnessed due to supply chain disruptions, MNCs have become prudent and are diversifying. India is poised for a more important role in the global value chains. India is attractive because of its skilled youth and large domestic market.”

Highlighting India’s future goals, Sitharaman said, “Today, we are reaching saturation in providing basic facilities to citizens such as houses, electricity, transport, etc., and are empowering them. Emphasis is there on financial inclusion so that all have bank accounts and benefits reach them directly. Going forward, we are focusing on skilling and digitisation so that there’s greater ease of living, transparency and formalisation of the economy.”

On emerging markets and G20, she noted that India is carrying forward agendas of earlier G20 Presidencies, bringing issues on table that India considers important and also making way for the future G20 Presidencies to build upon the legacy of India’s G20 Presidency.

“Emerging Markets have G20 Presidencies for three consecutive terms from Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023 and Brazil next year. This will bring views of the Emerging Markets to the front and also the voice of the Global South on to the G20 table,” Sitharaman added.AA

She further said that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are also holding a roundtable on Global Sovereign Debt.

“Initial discussions happened at the first G20 FMCBG in Bengaluru. India’s G20 presidency will create discussion and sharing of information on this issue and it will be taken forward positively,” the finance minister added.

On the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Sitharaman added that it should be more open about issues.

“WTO has to be progressive and fair to all members. It has to give voice to all and not just hear but also heed. There’s a continuation of a moratorium since 1998 on electronic transmissions despite evolution to the digital age. Shouldn’t there be a change in WTO policy in terms of a moratorium? We don’t have to reverse the benefits of globalisation but make it more transparent,” she emphasised.

Bengaluru: A court in Karnataka’s Kanakapura on Monday sent five cow vigilantes, including main accused Puneeth Kerehalli, to police custody for seven days in connection with a case in which a Muslim cattle trader was allegedly beaten to death for transporting cows and buffaloes illegally.

Judge Appanna Savadi pronounced the order after the accused were produced before him.

Karnataka police arrested the cow vigilantes who ran Raastra Rakshana Pade, from Rajasthan on April 5 – five days after the body of 35-year-old Idrees Pasha was found on April 1.

Iranian Prez calls for ‘united front’ among Muslim states to support Palestinians

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has called on Muslim states to form a “united and consistent” front in support of the Palestinians against Israel.

In a phone conversation with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Raisi said that Iran and Algeria share common stances on regional and international affairs, particularly the Palestine issue and the protection of the Palestinians’ rights, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement posted on the website of the Iranian President’s office.

The Algerian President said that he hoped that “Palestine would be liberated from the Israelis through cooperation among Muslim states”.

    MS Education Academy

The phone conversation followed last week’s escalation of tension along the Israeli borders with Lebanon and the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip. Militants from southern Lebanon and Gaza fired rockets at Israel, while Israel responded with airstrikes.

The latest round of escalation followed Israeli raids earlier last week at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, a flashpoint holy site in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israeli police clashed with dozens of Palestinian worshippers. The Israeli police said “dozens of law-breaking youths” attempted to barricade themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque “to incite riots”.

4% Muslim quota: Karnataka Congress chief vows to cancel BJP’s call

    [ad_1]

Karnataka: Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday said that if the grand old party came to power in the assembly elections, it would cancel the scrapping of 4 percent Muslim quota by the ruling government.

In March, the Karnataka government decided to scrap the four per cent quota for minorities and add it to the existing quota of two dominant communities of the poll-bound state.

The 4 per cent reservation given to Muslims under 2B classification of the OBC category will now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota of Vokkaligas and Lingayats for whom two new reservation categories of 2C and 2D were created during the Belagavi Assembly Session last year.

    MS Education Academy

While talking to ANI, Shivakumar said, “Without any complications, we raised our two lists. BJP could not raise its list yet…More lists will come…As soon as our government comes, we will cancel the reservation issue and will protect the minority interest.”

On Thursday, Congress released the second list of 41 candidates for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly Election 2023 and also marked a seat for the regional outfit Sarvodaya Karnataka Party. The announcement was made following the meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Parliamentary Board would finalise and release the list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state on April 8.

The Chief Minister added that the selection of the candidates has been done based on winnability.

The Congress had on March 25 announced its first list of 124 candidates, which included names of former CM Siddaramaiah and State Party chief DK Shivakumar.

The Assembly election in Karnataka is scheduled to be held on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

    [ad_1]

While the country faces religious disharmony, the students of the Shaheen group of institutions belonging to different faiths have organised Iftar for their Muslim friends in Karnataka’s Bidar, setting a perfect example of fraternity.

The month being Ramazan, the students have made an effort to prepare iftar plates loaded with fruits, fried items, and Rooh Afza (fruit drink) on daily basis.

While the Muslim students break their fast in the evening, their non-Muslim friends serve them food and drinks on dastarkhwan (dining spread).

While they actively engage in preparing iftar, a Hindu student said, “We find peace in doing this and we also want to be a part of Ramadan.”

Wishing ‘Ramzan Mubarak’ to everyone, the student also said that she feels happy witnessing an environment like this.

This act of unity and friendship between students of different faiths highlights the importance of mutual respect and understanding that still prevails in many areas of the nation.

Another student, who volunteered at the event said that it was the first time that she has experienced Ramzan and added, “I really feel lucky in helping Iftar for my Muslim friends.”

Lauding the efforts of the students, the founder of the institution, Dr Abdul Qadeer said that it is overwhelming to see the suited spirit among students.

As many as 4500 participate in the Iftar programme daily.

“On our campus, Muslim and non-Muslim students observe the Iftar daily, while Muslims break their fast, the non-Muslim students serve them while they send out messages of peace and love,” said Abdul Qadeer.

He further hopes and says that he prays that these students in the future lead to the betterment of society and the nation by setting an example of religious harmony.
