Hyderabad: Mir Alam Tank musical fountain worth Rs 2.5 cr lies ignored

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Musical fountain at the Mir Alam Tank, developed at the cost of Rs 2.55 crores has nearly submerged in the stinky water while it remains completely ignored by the development authorities of the state.

The 40-metre-long and 9-metre-wide fountain structure was set up on the very facet of the Mir Alam Lake, between Tadban to Aramghar roads.

Equipped with music and multimedia effects, the fountain was launched by the Telangana municipal administration and urban development minister KT Rama Rao, in the presence of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and home minister Mahmood Ali on April 19, 2022.

    MS Education Academy

However, the fountain worked for no more than two days and had since remained nonfunctional with overgrown bushes drowning the project into a costly dismay.

Developed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the fountain was inaugurated to fascinate its viewers but the set-up ended up submerged into the water, hidden by water hyacinth with only steel poles set to fence the area left behind as its remains.

Speaking to The Siasat Daily, Ramanthapur corporator Yousuf Danish points out the fact that the fountain never was lit up more than two days post-inauguration.

Pointing to the encroachments around the tank, Yousuf says that no measures have been taken by the state government to safeguard its investment.

Back then, authorities laid a separate drainage line to divert the sewerage water from the colonies of Hassannagar and surroundings into Musi. However, it seems like the pollution control measure haven’t worked out.

Though the Telangana government have taken up the task of beautification around the lake, maintenance with regular checks is essential.

‘Disco Dancer’ gets second life as a Salim-Suleiman stage musical

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: ‘Disco Dancer – The Musical’, a homage to Bollywood of the 1980s and the spirit of the Mithun Chakraborty-starrer after which it is named, premiered on Friday at the NSCI dome in Mumbai.

The event was a starry affair, with ‘Disco Dancer’ Mithun Chakraborty walking the red carpet with son Namashi, along with a galaxy of entertainers, from Bollywood star Suniel Shetty, the show’s presenter, who came with son Ahan, to the music directors Salim-Suleiman and Anu Malik, actors Arshad Warsi, Sunny Leone (with husband Daniel Weber), and Neil Nitin Mukesh, and playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan.

Also present were members of Bappi Lahiri’s family. It was Bappi Lahiri who composed the music for ‘Disco Dancer’ and also sang one of its hit numbers, ‘Yaad Aa Rahi Hai’. The film, which was emblematic of Bollywood’s obsession with ‘disco music’ at one point of time, is remembered for such ageless tracks as ‘Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja’ sung by Parvati Khan and the anthemic ‘I am a Disco Dancer’ belted out by Vijay Benedict.

    MS Education Academy

Talking to the media, Shetty said that he was very happy with the way things turned out for the show and hoped it would open up new opportunities for fresh talent.

There are not many takers for the concept of stage musicals in India, Shetty pointed out, adding that it seemed difficult for the art form to crack through an audience base that is crazy about films and cricket.

Donning a black shirt paired with black pants, and looking suave in his salt-and-pepper look, Shetty amented that stage musicals haven’t really taken off in India. He said it was because “clubbing acting, singing and dancing together on stage in front of a live audience is not a cakewalk for the cast by any stretch of imagination”.

Shetty said the production had been named ‘Disco Dancer – The Musical’ because it was “perhaps one of the few films whose every song was a runaway success”. The title of the musical also pays homage to the ‘Disco King of India’ (Bappi Lahiri), who passed away on February 15, 2022.

The stage musical, which brings back Bappi Lahiri’s cult classics in a reimagined score by Salim-Sulaiman, has been put together by Shetty and the music company, Saregama.

Hyderabad: Double-decker bus, musical fountain wow Sunday Funday visitors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Sunday Funday event at Tank Bund which resumed yesterday after a long gap saw thousands of visitors who got a glimpse of newly launched double-decker buses and musical fountain at Hussain Sagar.

At the event, people were seen enjoying watching the musical fountain show that took place between 7 pm and 10 pm. The fountain waves were seen dancing to the tunes of various songs including Oscar-nominated Naatu Naatu.

Apart from it, food stalls at the Tank Bund saw huge rush.

The organizer of Sunday Funday, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) distributed saplings free of cost. At the stalls set up by HMDA, there were around 5000 saplings of various varieties.

For the event, authorities restricted the traffic movement on Tank Bund and barricaded the road.

Musical fountain, double-decker bus made Sunday Funday event attractive

Recently launched double-decker bus and India’s largest musical floating fountain which was recently inaugurated by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) at Hussain Sagar made Sunday Funday event attractive.

The fountain which was launched near NTR Marg has a height of around 90 meters. It is 180 meters in length, and 10 meters wide. It is developed at a cost of Rs 17.02 crore.

The musical floating fountain boasts several exceptional features, including three laser sets that display a range of themes, mist fairy fog to create a cloud effect along with music, 800 jet high-powered nozzles, and 880 underwater LED lights that add to the dynamic visual experience.

On the other hand, double-decker buses returned to the roads of Hyderabad with the launch of three electric double-decker buses recently. It has historical relevance in Hyderabad. It was Nizam who had started the conventional double-decker buses that plied in the city until 2003.

These buses are predominantly plying around the race track covering Tank Bund, Necklace Road, Paradise, and Nizam College stretch.

    Initiative suggested by KTR

As Tank Bund is located in the center of the city and it is one of the oldest hangout spots for the citizens of Hyderabad, many people from all over the city visit the spot to spend leisure time, especially in the evenings.

In order to enable citizens to enjoy the beauty of the place and keeping safety of citizens in mind, minister for municipal administration and urban development K.T. Rama Rao suggested traffic free Sundays on the Tank Bund road from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Later, the initiative, Sunday Funday at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, received a massive response with people thronging the place with their families, clicking photos, and spending time in leisure.

Do you still think you would be working in a bookshop or as a painter if you hadn’t made it as an actor? EtienneJ
I think I’ve got too much energy to work in a bookshop. But I’ve never worked in one. Maybe it is really energetic. I loved painting up to my early 20s, but completely dropped it. When I’m old, or no one wants to give me an acting job, I’m going to pick it up again, because it’s something I still love.

Your grandad was a British spy in the German army who changed his name from Stellmacher. Can I set you up with a scriptwriter and your next role? jesseriley
That is true. He was a spy. He had a Ukrainian mother and a German father. We don’t know how he got to work as a spy for the British. After the war, he changed his name to Whishaw. It’s something I’m really interested in. My Auntie Ingrid and I are trying to research it, but we keep coming up against dead ends. If we could find a proper story, I’d be very interested. Spies fascinate me and I’m fascinated by my grandad. He was a mysterious and forbidding man.

Ben Whishaw in This Is Going to Hurt
Whishaw in This Is Going to Hurt. Photograph: Ludovic Robert/BBC/Sister/AMC

What was the goriest operation you had to perform in This Is Going to Hurt? Did the series change your perception of the NHS? Dantadanta and CarterP
There was a really gory scene where we had to deliver a baby from a dead woman. It was horrendous, even in a pretend way. She came back to life when another doctor put his hand up inside her ribcage and massaged her heart. Even I couldn’t watch that bit. The series did change my perspective. I had to really think about what it’s like to work for the NHS. It’s easy to forget the people who do are human. They are fragile, exhausted and have private lives, but we conveniently forget that. I so wish we would fund it properly, but I don’t know what we have to do to make the government wake up.

How did you get into acting and what is your favourite of the films you have made? Disneylover12345
I got into acting when I was a child. I always loved dressing up and that didn’t ever stop. I got into it more seriously as a teenager when my dad took me to a youth theatre, near to where we lived. It was run by a very brilliant man, who treated us like adults. We did lots of amazing, experimental and weird productions. I fell in love and I realised maybe it could be my life. And the favourite film I’ve been in is Paddington 2, because it’s so popular.

I saw Women Talking last year and it was my favourite film of the year. What was your experience on set with a predominantly female cast? What was distinct about Sarah Polley’s directorial style? sophiarubino
It was wonderful to work with that group of people. They were all great fun, no egos, and we were an ensemble, which is rare on a film set. Normally, you go back to your trailer, but we spent every day in a big room together. Sarah says it was happenstance, but I think it was intentional. She is sensitive and aware; she doesn’t want friction or stress. She listens, asks questions and watches everything like a hawk.

What animal did you study at drama school? Please say it was a bear! WeirdDug
A horse. I spent hours watching this horse in a field in my village and fell in love with it. Most people at drama school hated the exercise, but I loved it.

Which Hugh Grant would you rather fight again? The one from A Very English Scandal or the one from Paddington 2? djshuggg
The Hugh in English Scandal is very complex, so definitely the Hugh in Paddington 2. His musical sequence at the end is so great. Maybe we could meet again in a musical. I’m surprised no one has done Bridget Jones: The Musical. Surely that must be in the works?

I heard you sing in Mojo at the Harold Pinter theatre in 2013. Your voice is rich and melodic – I was stunned! Do you secretly yearn to take a big musical lead? ard1970
I could only sing as that character, for some reason. I really can’t sing. I wish I could. I see other actors who are amazing singers, but I’m not, sadly. That character somehow gave me access to a voice I don’t actually have.

I was a close friend of your school drama teacher, Nessa Brown. She was so proud of you and now I’m proud on her behalf. What are your memories of her? JaneCQ
That’s a lovely question. Vanessa was a very special person, for lots of reasons. She was astoundingly honest; brutally honest, at times. I was 16 and we were doing a play. Halfway through the rehearsal, she said: “Oh, stop acting!” She wasn’t frightened to push you, but it was always with love and intelligence. She was a real rebel spirit. We kept in regular contact. I really miss her.

If Paddington were promoted to Q, what gadgets would he invent for James Bond? TopTramp and crodd
Oh God, I hate these kinds of questions because I’m not a gadget person. A bulletproof duffel coat and exploding marmalade sandwiches sounds about right!

Ben Whishaw as Q and Daniel Craig as James Bond, in the 2012 movie Skyfall
Whishaw as Q and Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall. Photograph: Sony Pictures/Allstar

I saw your Brutus at the Bridge theatre. You were magnetic and lucid; a privilege to watch. As Richard II, your deposition speech took my breath away. What is the key to Shakespeare? Will you return to the theatre? Which Shakespeare would you do next? Hermione, KeepRunning, aquietanon and Justsit
The key to Shakespeare is not to be afraid of it. What made Shakespeare revolutionary is that he allowed real rhythms of speech to come through within the iambic pentameter. Characters in Hamlet forget what they are saying, or change their minds, just like real people. It should sound as natural as someone chatting to you. It’s poetry, but natural and everyday. I’m not planning to do any more stage work. I don’t think there are any more Shakespeares I’d be good at, unfortunately.

How do you immerse yourself so completely in such different roles? milinovak
I love the challenge of how you have to launch off one into another. You can go from Paddington Bear to Shakespeare to TV comedy. Someone told me a story about Helen Mirren playing Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra. Apparently, before she’d go on stage to play this beautiful queen, she’d go into this alter ego of a fish-and-chip seller from the East End. She needed to launch from the opposite to balance out. I really understand how you need these different energies. Once you’ve done one kind of role, you need to go in the opposite direction.

Watch the trailer for Women Talking.

What is the best advice you have been given? carolodonovan76
In my late 20s, I did a film with Jane Campion [Bright Star]. She could tell I was a people pleaser and made it clear that wasn’t going be helpful on this particular project. She gave me the space to not be like that. It’s not helpful to feel like you have to please all the time. You have to find something deeper within yourself than a wish to be liked, or to keep the peace. That’s something I’m still very interested in.

The Guardian has called you “Britain’s most likable actor”. Are you? LaurenceN
I never think of myself as likable. I don’t think of the characters I’ve played as likable. They are kind of messy. You can’t aim to be likable. Maybe I’m just likable because I’m Paddington. Who doesn’t like him?

Women Talking is in UK cinemas now

  • Senate musical chairs: California prepares for political battle over Feinstein vacancy

Senate musical chairs: California prepares for political battle over Feinstein vacancy

    [ad_1]

Dianne Feinstein, the 89-year-old who served as California senator for three decades, has yet to announce her retirement. But the contest to succeed her in two years is already shaping into a bitter battle.

After months of shadow campaigning and whispered political leveraging, earlier this month, Katie Porter – the whiteboard-wielding progressive congresswoman – became the first to officially declare her candidacy. Barbara Lee, the old-school leftist with an ardent antiwar record, has reportedly told colleagues she is running. Adam Schiff, icon of the anti-Trump liberal resistance, has reportedly begun prepping for a run. Silicon valley congressman Ro Khanna is expected to jump in as well.

In California’s open primary system, it’s possible, and likely, that two Democrats will face-off in the 2024 Senate race. Until then, voters may need to brace for what is sure to be a protracted, pricey two years of campaigning.

And we’re likely to see an “avalanche” of candidates to come, said Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University.

Porter’s early announcement drew criticism for coming not only before Feinstein had announced her retirement, but also amid a spate of severe storms in California. Following Porter’s announcement, Schiff pointedly used his campaign fundraising list to raise money for flood victims.

Katie Porter reads a book in the House Chamber during the fourth day of Speaker elections.

But Porter’s declaration also earned praise, for publicly owning up to the political plots that many ambitious California lawmakers have so far been devising in the dark. Concerns about Feinstein’s cognition and fitness to serve have been circulating for years, and quite a few candidates have been eyeing her seat for just as long.

“The sooner you can get out the door and start talking to donors and consolidate support, the stronger you’ll be,” Schiller said. Porter already had $8m in her campaign war chest after beating back a Republican challenger in her competitive Orange county district, south-east of Los Angeles and managed to raise more than a million in the first day after announcing her run for Feinstein’s seat. Schiff has nearly $21m.

Meanwhile Lee, a beloved Bay Area politician who has served in congress since 1998, hasn’t had to do a lot of fundraising so far. She’s got just over $50,000 on reserve. In a state that is dominated by the Democratic party, the ultimate victor could boil down to who has the most funding. And how each candidate manages to differentiate themselves from fellow lawmakers who ultimately agree on most major policy decisions.

“They’re not going to run on very slight policy differences,” Schiller said.“They’re going to run on who will be the strongest, most energetic – and they will use that word, energetic – advocate for the state of California.”

Porter, who is a protege of senator Elizabeth Warren (and has already been endorsed by the senator) has built a reputation as a sharp interrogator at congressional hearings, and staunch defender of women’s rights. Her victories in purple Orange county will also have trained her to persevere in politically chequered California.

Meanwhile, Schiff became a household name after serving as lead impeachment manager pursuing Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. While Schiff has earned the ire of criminal justice and immigrant rights advocates in California for his “tough on crime” record as a California legislator prior to being elected to Congress, he will likely be received as a more centrist and moderate alternative to the more leftist contenders.

Adam Schiff speaks to members of the media after final hearing of the January 6 panel.

Lee, the only member of both chambers of Congress to vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force after 9/11, can rely on her unwavering progressive record. “I can personally attest to her courageous, bold, principled stances,” said Aimee Allison, president and founder of She the People, an organisation aimed at boosting the political power of women of colour.

In the Bay Area, which has historically been the state’s political powerhouse and produced a spate of governors and senators including House speaker Nancy Pelosi, Feinstein, governor Gavin Newsom and vice-president Kamala Harris, Lee has strong support and has earned her bonafides working with the Black Panthers, then as a lawmaker pushing to limit defense spending, enacting gun control measures, climate legislation and protections for women’s rights.

When Newsom was considering whom to appoint to the Senate seat vacated by Harris, Lee was a top contender. Now Allison and many other Californians are hoping to see a Black woman ascend to the Senate – at a time when there are none in the chamber. “Black women are the drivers of so many Democratic wins throughout the country at every level,” Allison said. That they aren’t represented at all in the Senate “is a travesty”, she said.

Ro Khanna questions the panel during a House Committee on oversight and reform hearing.

It’s still unclear whether Khanna will run against Lee if she declares – having hinted that he might make way for his fellow Bay Area progressive if she runs. Khanna, who has positioned himself to run for either Senate or the presidency in recent years with political tours around the US, has branded himself as someone who can bridge populism and the big tech that dominates his Silicon Valley district.

Other potential contenders will make themselves known soon. Markedly missing from the field so far is a Latino candidate, in a state where 40% of residents are Latinx. Alex Padilla, the state’s junior senator, is the first Latino senator elected from California.

Some politicos think Newsom himself may declare a run – even as others speculate that he is positioning himself for a presidential run.

Feinstein still hasn’t said she’ll retire. But since Porter announced, “we’re all focused on the Senate race of 2024 – you can’t put that back in the box”, Allison said. “So the people who are serious about running for Senate – they’ve got to get started.”

  • David Crosby: a maddening musical genius who thrived through the chaos | Alexis Petridis

David Crosby: a maddening musical genius who thrived through the chaos | Alexis Petridis

    [ad_1]

By all accounts, including his own, David Crosby could be a tricky and difficult character. His career was regularly punctuated by angry arguments, bitter fallings-out, sackings, general discord. Joni Mitchell once waspishly suggested he was “a human-hater”. His former bandmate Roger McGuinn described his behaviour while a member of the Byrds as that of a “little Hitler”. Perhaps the best way to describe him was mercurial. He could be utterly charming and mischievously funny – fans gave him the affectionate nickname the Old Grey Cat – and incredibly generous to other musicians: Mitchell, among others, owed him a great deal. He could also be impossible: overbearing, mouthy, convinced of his own brilliance.

The thing was, he was right: Crosby genuinely was brilliant. He was blessed with a beautiful voice and an uncanny gift for harmony: in the early years, when the nascent Byrds were still blatant Beatles copyists called the Beefeaters, his vocals could make even their weakest material sparkle. He was a fantastic, forward-thinking songwriter. The jazz-influenced Everybody’s Been Burned sounded impressively sophisticated – a cutting-edge example of pop’s increasing maturity – when the Byrds recorded it in 1966. It turned out that Crosby had written it in 1962 while still a struggling folkie. Listening back to the multi-platinum albums of Crosby Stills & Nash (CSN), what’s striking is how original and idiosyncratic his songwriting contributions were.

Yet the Byrds had initially demurred from recording his material: it was hard to find room in among the souped-up folk songs and Dylan covers and the work of the band’s frontman McGuinn and chief songwriter Gene Clark. But almost as soon as Crosby got space on their albums, he changed the band. He forced his fellow Byrds to listen to a collection of Ravi Shankar ragas and John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass over and over again while touring the UK: the two albums inspired the groundbreaking Eight Miles High, widely considered to be the first psychedelic single ever released. He was also the Byrds’ most enthusiastic chronicler of the LSD experience, which informed the frantic I See You and the suitably dazed-sounding What’s Happening?!?! on 1966’s Fifth Dimension.

Emboldened, Crosby didn’t just fight for more room on its follow-up, Younger Than Yesterday, he insisted the band record some of his most adventurous and outre material: not just Everybody’s Been Burned but Mind Gardens, which ventured into freeform territory, “neither rhymed or had rhythm” in Crosby’s words, and, in truth, wobbled a little unsteadily along the line that separates adventurousness from self-indulgence. He successfully lobbied for his song Lady Friend to be released as a single: it was both a flop and a superb song, richly melodic, boasting an intricate brass arrangement and complex vocal harmonies. Crosby performed the latter alone, wiping his bandmates’ contributions and replacing them with his own multi-tracked voice.

That didn’t go down terribly well with the other Byrds, becoming a symbol of increasingly strained relations between Crosby and the rest of the band. The others hated celebrity, remaining surly and taciturn in interviews. Crosby loved fame, rarely missing the opportunity to offer his lengthy thoughts on drugs, politics or free love to journalists or indeed live audiences. Then there was his increasingly domineering attitude in the studio: “I was,” Crosby later said, “a thorough prick.” The band fired him midway through the making of their next album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, although tellingly they kept his songs: Draft Morning, Tribal Gathering and Dolphin’s Smile were all flatly brilliant, although clearly not brilliant enough for the band to endure his presence any longer.

Crosby seemed uncertain what to do next. He encountered Mitchell performing in a coffee shop and kickstarted her career, helping her land a recording contract and producing her debut album. And he stockpiled new songs, waiting for the opportunity that finally presented itself when the Hollies’ Graham Nash turned up at a house in LA where Crosby and Stephen Stills, formerly of the Buffalo Springfield, were jamming, and added a third harmony to the duo’s vocals.

Everything clicked perfectly on CSN’s eponymous 1969 debut. The trio’s harmonies, usually arranged by Crosby, were astonishing. All writers, they had a surfeit of great material: even in such exalted company, Crosby’s Guinnevere, an expansive product of his obsession with finding new tunings for his guitar, stood out. And the album’s sound and mood, relaxed even on rockier tracks such as Crosby’s Long Time Gone, fitted the moment: music to soothe listeners as the 60s party drew to a messy conclusion. It was a huge hit, establishing CSN as the premier example of that most late 60s of concepts, the supergroup. But there were issues. Relations in the band could be volatile, a state of affairs not much helped by their increasing enthusiasm for cocaine. They became more volatile still when Stills’ brilliant but erratic former Buffalo Springfield bandmate Neil Young joined, and Crosby’s girlfriend Christine Hinton was killed in a car accident: Nash opined that Crosby was “never the same” after identifying her body.

Still, for a while at least, the music continued to flow from him. Not just Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s (CSNY) multi-platinum album Déjà Vu – home to Crosby’s twitchily paranoid Almost Cut My Hair – but the frankly extraordinary 1971 solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name: haunting, richly atmospheric, the vocals frequently wordless and, on closer I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here, authentically unsettling, it might be the fullest expression of Crosby’s restless sense of adventure.

Said adventurousness was there again on 1972’s Graham Nash David Crosby, recorded by the duo when CSNY proved incapable of holding together long enough to follow-up to Déjà Vu. The album’s poppier material was Nash’s work, while Crosby came up with more expansive and exploratory exercises in mood and atmosphere of which Games was a particularly great example. The duo would reconvene, making the beautiful Wind on the Water, after CSNY’s famously turbulent 1974 tour came to a premature conclusion. The quartet had been lured back together by the prospect of making vast sums of money, although the omens were there – they had already tried and failed to record a new album. Proceedings swiftly degenerated into a bacchanal of coked-out excess and off-key vocals that Crosby dubbed “the doom tour”.

But things were even more doom-laden than Crosby thought, or the sunlit tone of Wind on the Water suggested. His increasing addiction – he moved from snorting cocaine to freebasing and using heroin – began to affect his writing, at least in terms of quantity. A man who had battled the Byrds to get as many of his songs as possible on their albums managed only three compositions on 1977’s CSN, an album that sold 6m copies: if the sense of exploratory magic that sparkled throughout Crosby Stills and Nash’s debut had been replaced by solid professionalism, its sound fitted neatly with that year’s vogue for smooth, Californian rock (tellingly, it was at No 2 in the US charts when Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours was at No 1). Thereafter, he stopped writing almost entirely. He cobbled together a solo album from unreleased songs he had written in the 70s. Rejected by his record label, it nevertheless provided the source for his solitary contribution to CSN’s next album, 1982’s Daylight Again: that the implausibly lovely Delta was one of its scattered highlights only underlined the talent that Crosby seemed intent on throwing away.

Just how intent he was is laid out in his 1988 autobiography Long Time Gone, a book that spares few details in documenting his descent: the open sores that covered his face and body, the squalid conditions in which he and partner, Jan Dance, lived, the crowd of dealers and fellow addicts he surrounded himself with – so sinister that even the musicians still willing to work with him dubbed them “the Manson Family” – the endless string of drug and firearms busts. At one juncture, Crosby had a drug-induced seizure while driving a car at 65 miles an hour. At another, Dance was held hostage by a dealer to whom Crosby owed money while he was out on the road. His addiction was such that he refused to let go of his freebase pipe even when a policeman was arresting him backstage. Nash began publicly expressing the view that Crosby was going to die; Young responded to his plight with the scathing Hippie Dream, a song that depicted Crosby in his ruin, “capsized in excess”. His deterioration was made very publicly visible during a chaotic CSNY performance at Live Aid. Running unsteadily through their brief set, Crosby looked decades older than his fellow musicians. “A 14-year addiction to heroin and cocaine has left David Crosby looking like a Bowery bum,” wrote Spin magazine.

Backstage at Live Aid, Young had suggested he would consent to a new CSNY album if Crosby cleaned up. After Crosby emerged from a nine-month stretch in prison on drugs and weapons charges – a sentence that almost undoubtedly saved his life – Young proved true to his word. Soulless and stilted, American Dream was a largely awful album – Compass, which Crosby had written in prison, was a rare highlight among a dearth of decent material – and, if anything, the subsequent CSNY album Live It Up was even worse, a hopeless attempt to marry their harmonies to the booming drums and glossy synth production that was still mainstream US rock’s default setting. It was a problem that also afflicted his post-prison solo albums Oh Yes I Can and Thousand Roads, although anyone prepared to dig deep would find a scattering of songs suggesting his skills were undiminished – the reflective and rueful Tracks in the Dust, the wordless Flying Man on the former, the Mitchell co-write Yvette in English on the latter. And, as Crosby put it: “I was just glad to be there at all.”

Meanwhile, CSN remained a huge live draw – even more so when Young could be inveigled to join them – while Crosby’s solo career began to blossom. He formed the jazzy trio CPR with James Raymond, who had only found out he was Crosby’s son when he was 30. Raymond also worked on his father’s strong 2014 solo album Croz. Mischievous as ever, Crosby was an enthusiastic participant in CSNY’s confrontational 2006 Freedom of Speech tour, its setlist weighted in favour of Young’s recent Living With War, an album that protested against the George Bush administration and the conflict in Iraq. Their performances provoked boos and walk-outs from conservative fans, but Crosby remained gleefully unrepentant: “Who are these people who come to a CSNY show and complain that we’re political?”

Age and sobriety didn’t diminish Crosby’s capacity to cause trouble. A projected CSN album with Rick Rubin had to be abandoned because Rubin couldn’t get along with him. Next, he fell out very publicly with both Young and Nash – he criticised both for leaving their wives for younger women – which brought both CSN and CSNY to a permanent conclusion. Crosby occasionally expressed regret, but in reality seemed energised by the finality of their split.

Certainly there was a noticeable upswing in the quality of his music. Recorded with much younger musicians, 2018’s Here If You Listen was the best and certainly the most consistent album Crosby had made since the early 70s. On its opener Glory or the poignant Your Own Ride (“I’ve been thinking about dying, how to do it well,” sang Crosby, who was plagued by ill health) it suggested an artist enjoying an unexpected creative Indian summer, an impression underlined by last year’s Live at the Capitol Theatre, which melded CSN classics, songs from If I Could Only Remember My Name and more recent material into an impressive summation of his career.

He also became an enthusiastic user of Twitter – he was still tweeting the day before he died – on which he was variously funny, provocative, infuriating, generous, wilfully argumentative, clearly obsessed with music, and never above reminding the world of his own talent. He was still tweeting right up to his death: his anger about US politics and the environment, praise for photographs of particularly well-rolled joints, approving retweets of fans praising his music – and of an old quote from his former bandmate Stills, a final moment of consensus about their motivation: “The joy of making a wonderful noise together.”
