Killing of Atiq Ahmed as heinous as Umesh Pal murder case: Mayawati

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday said the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in police custody in Prayagraj raises serious questions over the style of functioning of the Uttar Pradesh government.

It would be better if the Supreme Court takes cognisance of this “extremely serious and worrisome” incident, which is being discussed across the country, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said.

In a series of tweets, she said, “Now, instead of ‘rule of law by law’ in Uttar Pradesh, how appropriate is it that it becomes ‘encounter Pradesh’? Something to think about.”

“The shooting dead of Atiq Ahmed, who was brought from Gujarat jail and his brother Ashraf, who was brought from Bareilly jail last night in Prayagraj, in police custody, is just as heinous as the Umesh Pal murder case. It raises serious questions on the law and order of the UP government, and its style of functioning,” she said.

BJP leader Umesh Pal was killed by Atiq’s men in 2005.

Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup.

The brothers, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm. The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels. The last rites of Ahmed’s son Asad, who was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were performed here just hours before the shooting.

Briefing reporters about the incident, Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, Ramit Sharma said the three assailants, who were arrested immediately after the incident, had joined the group of reporters who were trying to get sound bites from Ahmed and Ashraf.

“In accordance with a mandatory legal requirement, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were brought to the hospital for a medical examination. According to preliminary information, three men posing as journalists approached them and opened fire. Ahmed and Ashraf were killed in the attack. The attackers have been held and are being questioned,” Sharma said.

Officials said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has formed a three-member judicial commission to probe the killing of Ahmed and his brother.

  • Viveka murder case: CBI makes key arrest

Viveka murder case: CBI makes key arrest

    [ad_1]

Kadapa: Stepping up the investigation into the 2019 murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday made a key arrest.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI arrested G. Uday Kumar Reddy at Pulivendula in Kadapa district. He is said to be a close follower of Kadapa MP Y. S. Avinash Reddy, the nephew of the deceased, who has been questioned by the agency multiple times in recent months.

The CBI team arrested Uday after issuing him a notice under section 41 A of the Criminal Procedure Code. He was earlier questioned by the CBI in the past.

    MS Education Academy

The investigation agency was shifting Uday to Hyderabad, where a CBI court is hearing the case since November last year following direction of the Supreme Court.

The development has come a couple of weeks after the Supreme Court constituted a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI and directed it to complete the investigation by April 30.

Uday, said to be an employee of Uranium mine at Tummalapalli in Kadapa district, had filed a private case against CBI S.P. Ram Singh in Kadapa Court last year. On the court’s direction, police had booked against Ram Singh in February last year following a complaint by Uday that the officer coerced him to give false testimony in the murder case. However, Andhra Pradesh High Court later stayed the case against the CBI SP.

On the day when Vivekananda Reddy was murdered at his residence, Uday had allegedly gone there along with Avinash Reddy and Shiva Shankar.

Uday was allegedly present at the residence of Y. S. Bhaskar Reddy, brother of the deceased and father of Avinash Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of present Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on the night of March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year while observing that doubts raised by Suneetha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Deceased’s brother Bhaskar Reddy and the latter’s son Avinash Reddy are facing allegations for their involvement in the murder. Avinash, cousin of the chief minister, has denied the allegations.

UP: Atiq Ahmad, his wife among 5 booked in forgery case linked to Umesh Pal’s murder

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Police have booked gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, his wife Shaista Parveen and son Ali in a forgery case linked to the murder of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

The FIR was registered on Saturday at Dhoomanganj police station here in which two more persons — Mohammad Sabir and Rakesh alias Nakesh alias Lala — have been named, the Prayagraj police said in a statement.

During the investigations in the Umesh Pal murder case, police had detained Rakesh for questioning, the statement said.

During interrogation, Rakesh said he had hidden a bag given by Parveen. Subsequently, the bag was recovered and two fake Aadhaar cards having the photo of Ali were found, police said, adding one of the Aadhaar cards carried the name of Sabir, son of Munne Siddiqui.

According to police, the case has been registered under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases have been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

In 2006, Atiq Ahmad and his aides abducted Umesh Pal and forced him to give a statement in court in their favour. Umesh Pal had registered a complaint in this regard.

  • Husband pleads guilty to murder of Indian nurse, 2 kids in UK

Husband pleads guilty to murder of Indian nurse, 2 kids in UK

    [ad_1]

London: A suspect charged with the triple murder of an Indian nurse and her two children pleaded guilty to the murders at a court hearing in eastern England on Wednesday and was remanded in judicial custody until his sentencing in July.

Saju Chelavalel, 52, appeared at Northampton Crown Court, where he admitted to killing wife Anju Asok, 35, and children Jeeva Saju, 6, and Janvi Saju, 4.

All three victims were found in December last year when emergency services were called to their home in Kettering to reports that they had suffered serious injuries. Forensic post-mortem examinations, which took place at Leicester Royal Infirmary following their deaths, concluded that all three died as a result of asphyxiation.

    MS Education Academy

“This was an absolutely tragic case and there are no words to articulate the devastation Saju Chelavalel caused when he chose to end the lives of Anju, Jeeva and Janvi,” said Detective Inspector Simon Barnes, Senior Investigating Officer from the Northamptonshire Police.

“I am pleased that he has pleaded guilty and spared Anju’s family and friends the pain of a trial. He will have to live with what he has done forever and I hope one day, he truly comprehends the pain his actions have caused,” he said.

The officer said that Anju Asok will be remembered as “so much more” than his victim as he described her as a dedicated nurse, loving mother, and loyal friend.

“My thoughts remain with her loved-ones and will continue to do so long into the future,” he said, extending his gratitude to all the officers involved in the case.

“This was a case that affected many people and it was through sheer dedication and professionalism that Chelavalel has been brought to justice so quickly,” he noted.

Chelavalel pleaded guilty to three counts of murder at Northampton Crown Court and will be sentenced at the same court on July 3. The judge has indicated that he would be handed a life sentence, with the minimum term before parole to be determined by the sentencing judge.

Anju Asok, originally from Viakom in Kottayam district of Kerala, had been employed at the local hospital in Kettering since 2021. She worked as a nurse in the orthopaedic department of Kettering General Hospital, which has since paid tributes to her as a “committed and compassionate” staff nurse.

The local police have also shared information about a remembrance ceremony held last month in memory of the deceased family at Kettering Park Infant Academy, where Jeeva and Janvi were enrolled.

The children in their respective classes were given a balloon either pink, blue or silver, to represent Janvi, Jeeva and Anju. The children then gathered outside and were joined by the rest of the school as the song Somewhere over the rainbow’ played and the balloons were released. A poem was read and a minute’s silence was held and the schoolchildren then filed back into the school past two new memorial benches.

“It was an honour to be invited to this ceremony and join the children in remembering Anju and their two classmates Jeeva and Janvi. We were privileged to be shown their classrooms and spend some time with their teachers,” said Detective Inspector Barnes.

“We were handed a beautiful remembrance book, full of pictures and messages from the children’s classmates and all of the staff. This is now with the family in India. Whilst my team and I have a professional job to do, we are not immune to the personal impact such tragedies cause. The school did the family proud in what was a very touching tribute. All three were much-loved and will be missed by everyone,” he added.
