Kalaburagi: Senior Congress leader and former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that ‘Manuvada’ and ‘Hindutva’ encourage murder, violence and discrimination.

The former CM said he is also a Hindu who follows Hindu Dharma but stands against Hindutva.

“Hindutva and Hindu Dharma are different. I’m always projected as anti-Hindu and anti-Hindu Dharma. I’m not anti-Hindu Dharma. I’m also a Hindu, but I’m anti-Manuvada and Hindutva,” Siddaramaiah said.

Addressing a gathering here, he said, “Does any religion encourage murder or violence? But Manuvada and Hindutva encourage murder, violence and discrimination. That’s the difference between Hindu Dharma and Hindutva.”

The Leader of Opposition had earlier too made his anti-Hindutva stands clear.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka by May.

Odisha minister murder case: Munda demands probe by an independent agency

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP leader and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda on Saturday demanded investigation by an independent agency into the brutal murder of Odisha minister Naba Kishore Das.

Speaking to media persons here, Munda said the murder of the minister is a major concern for the law and order situation of the state. “If such an incident happens to a minister, then what would be the condition of the common people in the state?” he asked.

If such a situation arises in between police and a minister, whom will the common people trust? Munda further asked.

Therefore, the case should be investigated by an independent agency so that truth can come out, he demanded.

The Tribal Affairs Minister also blamed the Odisha government for non-inclusion of 169 communities into Odisha ST List.

“It is not a political issue. It is a constitutional matter. It cannot be resolved by making political statements,” he said.

The state government has not submitted a concrete proposal for inclusion of the communities in the ST list, Munda said.

As per process, he said, proper anthropological research is needed to be done about the communities. After examining those, the Centre can include the genuine tribals in the list.

“In the 120 cases, there is no document, no research is done. If we will take those into consideration after receiving just a piece of paper, the entire India will tell us to make them tribals,” the Minister said.

Munda is here to inform the people about the programmes and welfare measures taken by the Modi government in the Union Budget 2023-24.

Meanwhile, the state crime branch, which is investigating the minister’s murder case, has got another four-day remand of accused police ASI Gopal Krushna Das (now dismissed).

Crime branch ADG Arun Bothra briefed justice J.P Das about the status of investigation. Justice Das, a retired judge of Orissa High Court has been appointed to monitor the high-profile case.

Das said he was briefed about the status of investigation in the case and overall, it is going in the right direction. However, he is yet to see the documents. Das also informed that he will soon visit the crime spot at Brajarajnagar in Jharsuguda district.

The investigation in the sensational murder case is on the right track, justice Das reportedly said after crime branch ADG Arun Bothra met him at his house in Cuttack and briefed him on the progress in the probe.

CBI questions Jagan’s OSD in Vivekananda murder case

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned Krishna Mohan Reddy, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

The central agency also quizzed Naveen, who works in the house of the chief minister.

The CBI officials questioned the duo for six-and-a-half hours in Kadapa.

The federal agency had issued notice to Krishna Mohan Reddy and Naveen on the basis of call data of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy.

The CBI officials are understood to have questioned the duo as to what had happened on the day when Vivekananda Reddy was murdered. They collected information about phone calls made or received by them.

Last week, the CBI questioned Avinash Reddy, who is a cousin of the chief minister. He was grilled for more than four-and-a-half hours.

Vivekananda Reddy, paternal uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered mysteriously at his residence at Pulivendula in Kadapa district on March 15, 2019, a month ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him. He was killed hours before he was to launch the YSR Congress Party’s election campaign in Kadapa.

Though three Special Investigation Teams (SITs) conducted the probe, they failed to solve the mystery.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Sunitha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The CBI filed a chargesheet in the murder case on October 26, 2021, and followed it up with a supplementary chargesheet on January 31, 2022.

In November last year, the Supreme Court transferred to a CBI court in Hyderabad the trial and probe into the larger conspiracy behind the murder.

The apex court observed that doubts raised by Sunitha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Retd HC judge to monitor crime branch probe into Odisha minister’s murder case: Official

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A former Orissa High Court judge will monitor the police crime branch investigation into the murder of health minister Naba Kishore Das, an official said on Wednesday.

The home department had earlier requested the Orissa High Court to name a judge to monitor the investigation being carried out by the crime branch of the police.

The administration had made such a request to the high court to “maintain transparency in the investigation” in the wake of a demand for an impartial inquiry into the incident, a home department official said.

“The high court suggested the state government to engage Justice (Retd) J P Das to supervise and monitor the probe,” he said.

The state government had earlier announced the crime branch inquiry into the incident immediately after the state health minister was murdered.

Das, 60, breathed his last on January 29 evening, hours after he was shot by a policeman at Gandhi Chhak in Brajrajnagar area of Jharsuguda district, where he had gone to attend an event.

Earlier, the opposition BJP had demanded a CBI probe into the incident, claiming that the “Odisha police could not deliver justice as a policeman was the prime accused in the case”.

The Congress also demanded a court-monitored special investigation team to probe into the incident or a judicial inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Odisha assembly informed the Election Commission that the Jharsuguda assembly seat fell vacant after the death of Das on Sunday.

According to norms, an assembly or Lok Sabha constituency cannot remain vacant for more than six months, the official said.

“As the election to the Odisha assembly is due next year, a by-poll to Jharsuguda seat may be held. The EC will take the final call,” he added.

Narendra Dabholkar murder: CBI tells Bombay HC its probe is complete

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday informed the Bombay High Court that it has completed its probe into the 2013 killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, and submitted the report to the competent authority for its decision.

The submission came following a query by a division bench comprising Justices A.S. Gadkari and P.D. Naik, which asked whether the investigation into the murder of Dabholkar — who was shot dead in Pune on August 20, 2013 – was complete.

To this, the CBI counsel, Additional Solicitor-General Anil Singh, said that the investigating officer of the agency has already submitted to the concerned authorities that the probe is over and no further investigation is required.

On Singh’s request, the bench allowed three weeks’ time to the CBI to confirm whether its probe is over to enable the high court to decide whether it should continue monitoring the same.

Singh said that the CBI has carried out the investigation, and no further probe is needed, adding that the IO has also filed his report which is pending before the competent authority. So far, 15 out of 32 witnesses have been examined in the trial, which commenced in September 2021, Singh informed the court.

The court’s order came on a petition filed by Dabholkar’s daughter, who had sought a high court-monitored probe, contending that the CBI investigation was not satisfactory and it had left loopholes in its probe.

The founder of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS), Dabholkar was gunned down while on a morning walk in Pune, allegedly by members of a right-wing group, Sanatan Sanstha.

Mohsin Shaikh murder case: Pune court acquits Hindu outfit leader, 19 others

    [ad_1]

Pune: A sessions court has acquitted Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) leader Dhananjay Desai and 19 others in the June 2, 2014 murder of IT professional Mohsin Shaikh during the violence.

The Defence lawyer advocate Milind Pawar who was representing Dhananjay Desai said that all the accused were acquitted on Friday as the evidence on record was not strong enough.

“All 20 accused including Dhananjay Desai have been acquitted by the Session court today citing lack of evidence,” he said.

The defence lawyer further said that the prosecutor failed to prove the charge of “criminal conspiracy” on which police had arrested.

“We had argued in the court that Dhanajay who was allegedly part of a group who had beaten Shaikh was in Yerwada jail on the date of the incident in a different case, but Police have accused and arrested Dhanajay Desai on the charge of criminal conspiracy but Public Prosecutor failed to prove the case,” he further said, adding that the witnesses in the case failed to identify all the accused saying there were dark during the incident.

Mohsin Shaikh, 28-year-old was killed by a mob during the violence which had erupted at Unnatinagar and adjoining localities in Hadapsar over an objectionable post on social media.

The case dates back to June 2014 when Shaikh was returning home with a friend after offering evening prayers when he was randomly targeted and attacked by the mob and attacked with hockey sticks and cricket bats. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Police had booked 22 people, including two minors, in the case. The two minors were acquitted earlier. The remaining 20 accused were acquitted on Friday.

Additional sessions judge SB Salunke of the Pune session court pronounced the order.

YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy appears before CBI in murder case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Congress Party Lok Sabha MP from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh Avinash Reddy on Saturday appeared before the CBI officials here in connection with the murder of Vivekananda Reddy, younger brother of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in 2019.

The probe agency had earlier summoned him on January 24 but the MP sought more time, following which the CBI has given him a new date of January 28.

Sources said he was called as witness in the case.

Avinash is cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The CBI had filed a charge sheet in the murder case on October 26, 2021 and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on January 31, 2022.

Vivekananda Reddy was the brother of Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy. He was found murdered at his residence in Pulivendula, the constituency now represented by his nephew, on the night of March 15, 2019, weeks before the State assembly elections.

The Supreme Court in November transferred the high-profile murder trial of Vivekananda Reddy to a special court in Telangana, after taking note of allegations by the deceased’s widow and daughter about influential people attempting to scuttle the trial in his home State.

  • Pune techie murder case: All accused including Hindu group leader acquitted

Pune techie murder case: All accused including Hindu group leader acquitted

    [ad_1]

Pune: Nine years after the murder of an IT professional Mohsin Shaikh rocked Maharashtra, a Pune Sessions Court acquitted all 20 accused including the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) President Dhananjay Desai, here on Friday.

Reading out the verdict on Friday, Pune Additional Sessions Judge S.B. Salunkhe said that the evidence brought on record was not strong enough to convict Desai and other co-accused and the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts, lawyer Sudhir Shah said for one of the accused.

“It was a conspiracy to frame me and the police were misused… I was innocent,” Desai remarked briefly after the court verdict.

Shaikh, 28, had allegedly posted some objectionable content on social media pertaining to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the late Balasaheb Thackeray and others, which resulted in protests and violence in Unnatnagar and surroundings of Hadapsar, on June 2, 2014.

At that time, Shaikh, who hailed from Solapur, was returning home with his friend Riyaz A. Shendrare after offering prayers in a mosque and was targeted by some motorcycle-borne men armed with hockey sticks, cricket bats, stones and other weapons, who created mayhem in the vicinity, attacking people and properties.

Seriously hurt in the attack by a cricket bat blow, Shaikh died while under treatment in hospital, and his brother Mobin Shaikh lodged an FIR.

In his complaint, Mobin stated that the attackers intercepted his brother Mohsin and his friend Riyaz at Satav Plot around 9.15 p.m. as he sported a beard and wore a light-green Pathani suit.

After investigations, the Pune Police charged Desai of inciting passions through inflammatory speeches in January and March 2014 in Manjari and Lonikalbhor areas in Hadapsar.

A total of 21 people, including a minor, all said to be HRS activists, were nabbed in the case and all secured bail later, as their lawyers argued about political motives, with the state assembly elections which were due then.

Taking strong cognizance, the government of the then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had appointed eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor, but after objections from some groups, he finally opted out in May 2017.

Later, the government appointed the District Government Pleader Ujjwala Pawar as the SPP and after her retirement, Dhaigude Patil continued the matter.

The Sessions Court verdict on Friday has evoked sharp reactions from various political parties in the state.
