Kerala doctor murder: Outraged medical bodies stage protest

    [ad_1]

Kollam/Thiruvananthapuram: Angry medical professionals came out on the streets protesting after a 22-year-old doctor was stabbed to death by a patient she was treating on Wednesday.

Condemning the attack, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) termed the incident as unfortunate and sad.

In a statement issued by KGMOA’s president Dr T N Suresh, the union of government medical professionals said all services except emergency treatment will be suspended today in Kollam district.

    MS Education Academy

It sought exemplary punishment for those responsible for the incident and demanded that stringent measures be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

KGMOA also urged the government to strengthen security in hospitals, ensure due precautions are taken when bringing the accused in custody for medical examination and urgently implement a triage system.

An IMA official said that doctors and nurses try their best to save lives but if their lives are in jeopardy, what should be done. “Such incidents should not happen. We (doctors) cannot continue working in such circumstances. It is unacceptable that our lives are in danger when we are trying to save lives. We had in the past too indicated our objections to such attacks on medical professionals. We are angry and sad over the incident,” he said.

Dr Vandana Das (22) was stabbed to death by Sandeep (42) while she was attending him in Kerala on Wednesday. Sandeep was brought there by police after being involved in a fight with his family members.

She was attending to Sandeep when suddenly he fatally attacked her with a pair of surgical scissors and a scalpel on her head, neck and chest.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of the doctor and said the incident was “shocking and extremely painful”. He said a thorough investigation will be conducted in the matter.

“Assaulting health workers in the line of duty is unacceptable. A thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident. The government will take strong action against attacks on doctors and health workers,” Vijayan said in a statement.

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission, based on media reports of the incident, on its own initiated a case and sought a report within seven days from the District Police Chief of Kollam.

The incident kicked off a political row over Health Minister Veena George’s statement before the media that the victim was a house surgeon and therefore, inexperienced and got scared when the attack occurred.

Criticising her statement, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K Sudhakaran questioned what the minister meant by the doctor being inexperienced.

“Does she mean the doctor was inexperienced to counter or defend against an attack by a man addicted to drugs and alcohol? The statement is a joke,” he told reporters.

Condoling the death of the doctor, Sudhakaran said it was sad and unfortunate that something like this happened.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and senior Congress leader V D Satheesan said the doctor’s murder has shaken the entire Kerala society.

He contended that it was a dangerous situation that hospitals are not safe places and alleged that the doctor was killed due to “negligence of the police”.

Education Minister V Sivankutty also condoled the death and said it was a shocking incident. He said the government will take all necessary steps under the law including departmental action against the accused, who is a school teacher.

The state government came under fire from the Congress and the BJP with both parties alleging that it has done little to ensure safety of healthcare workers at their workplaces.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan, while expressing shock and concern over the tragic incident, contended it was a shame that doctors and healthcare workers were not safe in Kerala.

He alleged that the “apathy and callousness” of the Pinarayi Vijayan government and its “misgovernance” was tarnishing the image of the state and bringing disrepute to it.

“Shocked to learn about the brutal murder of Dr Vandana Das and attack on hospital staff in Kottarakkara. Atrocious that dreaded criminals are cut loose, endangering the lives of life savers. Deeply concerned about the safety of doctors and healthcare workers in Kerala.

“Shame that doctors and healthcare workers are not safe in Kerala, which is a renowned global destination for medical tourism and has a rich legacy of various streams of medicine and healthcare. The apathy and callousness of @pinarayivijayan and the misgovernance of @CPIMKerala is tarnishing that image and bringing disrepute to the State. It’s a disgrace that @pinarayivijayan government can’t keep our doctors safe,” he tweeted.

Speaking along similar lines, Satheesan alleged it was deplorable that the state government has done little to ensure safety of healthcare workers.

He said there were widespread problems in the health department and in each case only inquiries were announced and beyond that nothing else happened.

The Congress leader attacked George too by saying that the minister had ordered the “most number of investigations in the state’s history”.

Tillu Tajpuriya murder: ‘How were 4 knives found in prison?’ HC to jailers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday questioned jail authorities over recovery of four knives from Tihar premises where gangster Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death allegedly by inmates belonging to a rival gang.

The court asked why no preventive or remedial action was taken by authorities when the incident took place as the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in jail premises.

Justice Jasmeet Singh issued notice to the Director General of Prisons (Delhi), Delhi government and Commissioner of Police on a petition filed by Tajpuriya’s father and brother seeking an investigation by the CBI into the “brutal murder” inside Tihar Jail premises on May 2.

    MS Education Academy

The petitioners, represented through senior advocate Maninder Singh, said they are DTC drivers and sought adequate security for themselves.

The high court directed the Delhi Police to ensure safety and security of both the petitioners, who are father and brother of the deceased, and listed the matter for further hearing on May 25.

It directed the Tihar jail authorities to file an affidavit as to how four knives were found in prison and asked the jail superintendent concerned to be present in the court on the next date of hearing.

A CCTV video from Tihar Jail which emerged on social media purportedly showed Tajpuriya being attacked in front of security personnel and also when they were carrying him away after he was stabbed.

Tajpuriya was assaulted with improvised weapons allegedly by four members of the Gogi gang inside the high-security prison on May 2.

The accused attacked him for a second time when he was being carried away by security personnel, according to the footage.

In the footage, it appears that the security personnel are mute spectators while the assailants kept repeatedly attacking the gangster.

According to jail officials, seven personnel of the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TNSP), who were on duty at a Tihar prison cell when Tajpuriya was stabbed to death, have been suspended following the incident.

The development comes days after Director General of Delhi Prisons Sanjay Beniwal wrote to the Tamil Nadu Police asking them to take action against its personnel.

A meeting was also conducted with officials of the TNSP regarding the alleged negligence on part of their personnel during which they had assured to take departmental action against their personnel, a jail official had said.

“The Tamil Nadu Police has now suspended seven of its personnel and called them back,” a jail official said.

The TNSP personnel were deployed at cell number eight where the incident took place, the officials said.

But he was still alive and was being carried away by the prison security personnel when the accused attacked him for a second time, according to the footage.

  • Viveka murder case: Prime accused surrenders in CBI court

Viveka murder case: Prime accused surrenders in CBI court

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Yerra Gangi Reddy, the prime accused in former Andhra Pradesh minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case, surrendered in CBI court on Friday on the direction of the Telangana High Court.

The CBI court remanded him to judicial custody till June 2. He will be shifted to Chanchalguda Central Jail.

On April 27, the High Court had cancelled the bail of Gangi Reddy and directed him to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court by May 5.

    MS Education Academy

The High Court ruled that as the CBI is scheduled to complete the hearing on June 30, Gangi Reddy may be granted bail on July 1 on a personal bond of Rs 1.50 lakh.

Recently, the Supreme Court extended the deadline for completing the investigation into the sensational case till June 30.

The CBI sought the cancellation of the bail on the ground that Gangi Reddy is the main accused and has been influencing key witnesses in the case.

Gangi Reddy is having political backing and is trying to put pressure on the witnesses through his connections, the CBI counsel had argued.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Andhra Pradesh police, which was then investigating the murder case, arrested Gangi Reddy on March 28, 2019.

Reddy was granted default bail by a local court at Pulivendula on June 27, 2019 as the SIT had failed to file chargesheet in the specified period. After the CBI took over the investigation and filed the chargesheet, it had approached the court to cancel his bail. The court had dismissed the CBI petition.

Later, the Andhra Pradesh High Court also upheld the decision of the lower court.

Subsequently, the CBI had approached the Supreme Court, challenging the order of the High Court.

The Supreme Court in November last year transferred the trial in the murder case from Andhra Pradesh to CBI court in Hyderabad. Consequent to this, the apex court asked the CBI to approach the Telangana High Court for cancellation of bail of Gangi Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of present Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on March 15, 2019, weeks before elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad while observing that doubts raised by Suneetha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

UP: Atiq Ahmad’s 2 jailed sons among 6 booked for attempt to murder, extortion

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Police here have filed a fresh FIR against gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad’s two sons Umar and Ali, who are currently in jail, and four others on charges of attempt to murder and extortion.

The FIR was registered at Khuldabad police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by a builder, Mohammad Muslim, police officials said.

Atiq and his brother Ashraf, both of whom were booked in the Umesh Pal murder case, were shot dead here on April 15 by three men posing as journalists while they were being escorted by police personnel to a hospital for a checkup.

    MS Education Academy

Mohammad, a resident of Chakia, started working as a builder in 2006. Atiq, his brother Ashraf and their henchmen encroached on his land and demanded money from him, according to the FIR.

Fearing Atiq, Mohammad left Prayagraj and went to Lucknow. However, Atiq’s henchmen kept threatening him, the officials said.

Mohammad owns land in Devghat village which is worth about Rs 15 crore. Atiq’s aide Asad Kalia visited Lucknow several times and threatened Mohammad to force him to transfer his land in the name of Ali and Umar Ahmad, they said.

A few years ago, Mohammad was surrounded, forced into a car and taken to Atiq’s office, where he was locked in a room and beaten up, they added.

On the basis of Mohammad’s complaint, an FIR under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 386 (extortion), among others, of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Umar and Ali Ahmad, Asad Kalia, Ehtesham Karim, Ajay and Mohd Nasrat, the officials said.

While Umar is lodged in Lucknow jail, Ali is lodged in Naini jail.

Atiq’s third son, Asad, who was also named in the Umesh Pal murder case, was gunned down in a police encounter on April 13.
