Mumbai: It’s hard to take our eyes off power couple Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli at Dior Mumbai Show.
Virat and Anushka attended the international luxury giant Christian Dior’s ongoing India-inspired pre-fall 2023 show in Mumbai.

Anushka can be seen in a beautiful yellow dress and a matching Lady Diana mini bag. She kept her tresses open for the look.

Virat, on the other hand, looked handsome in a khaki-toned suit and white shirt. He completed his stylish look with comfy white sneakers.

The couple flashed dazzling smiles as they posed for the paps at the event.

Anushka and Virat were also recently seen at the Indian Sports Honours event.

Set against the backdrop of the iconic Gateway of India, the French fashion brand celebrates the richness of Indian textiles and the show itself marks the first official calendar display by a prominent European luxury brand in India.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s current artistic director of women’s collections, has collaborated with Mumbai-based atelier Chanakya School Of Craft to put together the luxury brand’s ready-to-wear collection.

In fashion terminology, pre-fall fashion refers to small capsule collections released by designers just ahead of the fall fashion shows in February, before they arrive in stores in early summer. Pre-fall fashion is usually unveiled in a less formal, smaller-scale runway show to the primary Fall and Spring Fashion Week shows.

Apart from Anushka and Virat, Anaita Shroff Adajania, Maisie Williams, Shibani Akhtar, Ananya Panday, Sonam Kapoor, Athiya Shetty, Isha Ambani, and Radhika Merchant were among other celebs gracing the event.

  • Mumbai: Queer student claims not allowed at event over ‘inappropriate’ dress in TISS

Mumbai: Queer student claims not allowed at event over ‘inappropriate’ dress in TISS

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The students’ union president of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) who has chosen to be identified as queer has claimed discrimination at an event on the campus over “inappropriate” dress.

A TISS professor here said the institute is known for its inclusive nature and they will look into the matter if there has been any incidence where any student was made to feel discriminated against.

The alleged incident took place on March 25, when a speech was organised on “Ambedkar Nationalism, And the Need for Contemporary Collaborative Activitism”.

In a social media post, TISS students’ union president Pratik Permey said, “I was invited to the Ambedkar Memorial Lecture as a representative of the students’ union, to welcome the guests and do some formalities. When I reached the venue, around 6 pm I showed up in the usual dress. It was a blouse and a skirt.”

Around 7, Permey claimed, a professor and a few members of the organising committee said “for an event like this, you cannot wear something like that”.

Even if the institute wants to curb what students wear, it is not fine, said Permey. “Apart from being an indigenous and tribal person, I am also a queer. I also felt that my queerness was not allowed to represent or rather I was not allowed to because of my queerness,” Permey said.

The student union leader added, “I really felt violated and humiliated. My right and my freedom were curbed. I was not allowed to represent.”

A TISS professor said theirs is perhaps the only institution in the country with a gender-neutral hostel. TISS is known for its inclusive nature with all supportive mechanisms in place for students of all genders and identities to co-exist, said the professor.

“If there has been any incidence where any student feels discriminated, we will look into the matter. All students are assured of an inclusive atmosphere on the campus,” said the professor.

Mumbai: BMC announces 15 per cent water cut for a month from March 31

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A 15 per cent water cut will be implemented across Mumbai for 30 days from March 31 to fix a hole in a crucial supply tunnel, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Tuesday.

Water has been leaking from the tunnel after it was recently punctured in Thane while digging a borewell, BMC said in a release.

According to the civic body, its Bhandup water complex, which takes care of 65 per cent of the total water supplied to Mumbai, receives about 75 per cent of its supply through this 15-km-long tunnel that has a diameter of 5,500 mm.

“This tunnel got punctured in Thane due to the digging of a borewell and water is leaking on a large scale. It is necessary to isolate the tunnel completely for repairs and use an alternate transmission system for bringing water to Bhandup, during the repairs period,” said the BMC release.

The corporation said that the water supply to Mumbai and its suburbs will get affected during the switching over of transmission systems and repairs. Therefore, it has decided to impose a water cut of up to 15 per cent, said the civic body.

The BMC also appealed to citizens to use water judiciously and co-operate with it.

Mumbai Shocker: Cop forces rape victim to walk 2 km for medical test

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a Dalit woman lawyer – who had complained of rape, black magic practices and domestic violence by her in-laws and others – was allegedly made to walk around 2 km by a lady constable for her medical examination at a government hospital, her lawyer said here on Tuesday.

The victim had lodged complaint of rape against her NRI husband, a tantrik, her brothers-in-law and other relatives for allegedly subjecting her to repeated rape, torture and other forms of abuse since her marriage, said Advocate Nitin Satpute.

Even her complaint was registered by the Bhoiwada Police a few days ago, but only after making a lot of efforts, and she was scheduled for a medical examination at the KEM Hospital in Parel on Tuesday, he said.

“A lady constable asked her for the taxi fare, which the victim woman, a lawyer practising at the Bombay High Court, did not have. So the lady constable made her walk for 2 km from there to the BMC’s KEM Hospital for her medical,” Satpute said.

He wanted to know “where are the Nirbhaya vehicles for such rape victims”, and how could the accused be made to walk for the medical test while the accused are being taken around in police vehicles.

Satpute has brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV), Pravin Mundhe, and is awaiting the police response.

Salman Khan threat email: Mumbai cops apprehend man from Rajasthan

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Mumbai police have apprehended a man from Rajasthan in connection with an email threatening actor Salman Khan that was received at the latter’s office here recently, an official said on Sunday.

The accused was nabbed by a team of Bandra police station and is being brought to Mumbai, an official said. The accused Dhakad Ram Bishnoi (21) is a resident of Siyagon ki Dhani in Rohicha Kalan village under the Luni police station in Jodhpur. He was on bail in a case of Arms Act, police said.

Jodhpur’s DCP (West) Gaurav Yadav said a team from Mumbai’s Bandra police station arrived here to arrest Bishnoi on Sunday. “They asked us to assist them in detaining Bishnoi. We provided them support and handed Bishnoi over to the Mumbai Police,” said Yadav.

The complaint about the threat e-mail was recently lodged at the Bandra police station by one Prashant Gunjalkar, who according to police, frequently visits the Bandra-based residence of Salman Khan and runs an artist management company.

When Gunjalkar was present in Khan’s office in Galaxy Apartment recently, he noticed an email had been received from the ID “Rohit Garg”. The sender of the e-mail, written in Hindi, said: “Goldy Bhai (gangster Goldy Brar) wanted to talk to Salman Khan face-to-face to close the matter”, adding, “Agli baar, jhatka dekhne ko milega (You’ll see something shocking)”, the police had said.

“After a detailed technical investigation into the case, police got information about the accused person’s whereabouts, following which a team was sent to Rajasthan and the man was apprehended,” the official said.

He is being interrogated by a police team about the threat to the actor, he said.

After the threat mail was received, the Mumbai police had registered a first information report (FIR) against gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. The FIR was registered under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 506-II (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the police said.

Yadav said Bishnoi had been arrested in September last year by the Sardarpura police for possessing illegal weapon and was out on bail.

However, no link between him and Lawrence Bishnoi or any other local gang has come to the notice during investigation so far, he added.

Jodhpur police officials said a case had also been registered against Bishnoi at Mansa’s Sadar police in Punjab on March 24 for sending a similar threatening mail to the father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.

A team of Punjab Police also reached Jodhpur to arrest Bishnoi on Sunday, he said.

However, the Punjab Police will have to wait to claim Bishnoi’s custody until Mumbai police completes its investigation, he added.

  • Apologise to journalist: Mumbai Press Club to Rahul over ‘Kyun hawa nikal gayi?’ remark

Apologise to journalist: Mumbai Press Club to Rahul over ‘Kyun hawa nikal gayi?’ remark

    [ad_1]

The Mumbai Press Club on Saturday released a statement condemning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on a journalist during his press conference on the same day.

The statement said that Gandhi publicly humiliated the journalist when the latter asked “tough questions” to the former.

“The job of a journalist is to ask questions and it is the duty of political leaders who call press conferences and engage with journalists to answer these questions with dignity and decorum. It is unfortunate that as the leader of one of the oldest political parties of the country, Mr Gandhi failed to respect the dignity of the Fourth Estate,” the Mumbai Press Club said.

The statement further read, “At a broader level, it is a matter of concern that political parties of all hues have been attempting to browbeat journalists using derogatory language and threats as a response to news reporting they find unpalatable. We once again appeal to all political actors to uphold the freedom of the press to report and provide critical comments. They must remember the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression is a cornerstone of our democracy.”

“In this context, it will be appropriate for Mr Rahul Gandhi to make amends and offer an apology to the journalist concerned,” it concluded.

Gandhi was holding his first news conference after being dismissed as a Lok Sabha member on March 24.

The journalist was asking a question about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) accusation that Gandhi’s comment about Modi’s surname is an ‘insult to the OBC (other backward classes) community’.

In response, the Congress politician told the journalist, “Don’t pretend to be a pressman…Kyun hawa nikal gayi?”

Mumbai man goes berserk, stabs 5, kills 2 in residential building

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In a shocker, a middle-aged man went on a stabbing spree in a Mumbai residential building on Friday, attacking five persons, of which two have reportedly succumbed to their injuries, before he was overpowered, police said.

The attacker, identified as Chetan Gala, 54, was arrested after the mayhem which occurred around 3.30 pm, sending panic waves in the locality.

According to officials at the Dr D.B. Marg Police Station, the incident occurred at the Parvati Mansion building, with old-style common passages in a residential neighbourhood of Grant Road.

Locals who shot videos showed Gala rushing to another person on the second floor of the building and repeatedly stabbing him till he collapsed in a pool of blood.

Then he nonchalantly walked down to the first floor where another man was descending the stairs and the crowds below warned him to run to safety as the attacker was coming behind him.

At least two other panicky residents could be seen running around with the people assembled below screaming at the attacker.

The exact motives behind the serial killing bout is not clear and the police have lodged a FIR and probing further.

The injured were rushed to the Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and the BMC’s Nair Hospital nearby where the condition of two is said to be serious.

Police said that the accused Gala suddenly stepped out brandishing a knife and started stabbing people at random around, targeting at least five.

Horrified locals called up the police and a team rushed there to take control, and managed to overpower him soon.

Activist Harsh Mander denied permission to speak at TISS Mumbai

    [ad_1]

Human rights activist and author Harsh Mander was reportedly refused permission to speak on Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom day at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai.

The postponement of Mander’s event at TISS comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs’ request for a CBI investigation into Aman Biradari, an organisation founded by Mander, for suspected violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

The event organisers, Progressive Students’ Forum, claimed that the TISS administration placed unjustified limitations on the Bhagat Singh Memorial Lecture (BSML) just one day before the event.

“BSML is an event held in the campus premises annually for the remembrance of revolutionary figure Bhagat Singh to offer alternative perspectives to the Sangh appropriation of the legendary freedom fighter. It involves cultural events and an address by guest lecturers. For the fifth edition, renowned social activist and ex IAS officer Harsh Mander who has spearheaded campaigns such as Karwan-e – Mohabbat and Right to food and Aishe Ghosh, President of the JNU student’s union and political activist who came into prominence during the anti-CAA protest were set to join the gathering,” read the statement by PSF.

Students protested in front of the Director’s Bungalow on March 21st and 22nd in response to the cancellation. Following the demonstration, the administration granted permission to the left student body but rejected permission to outside guest lecturers or specialists.

Delhi University professor and writer Apoorvanand called the incident, ‘Indian democracy is at work’.

“Indian democracy at work: Harsh Mander told that he was not welcome in TISS, Bombay to give his talk to mark the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh. Before that NLU, Lucknow canceled his talk. CBI, ED, NCPCR have already initiated action against him,” he tweeted.

Mander’s talk was also recently cancelled by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow.

Mumbai: Tattoo helps police track down accused in 15-year-old case

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Mumbai police on Thursday arrested a 63-year-old man who was absconding for the past 15 years in a housebreaking and theft case after working on the input that the accused has a tattoo on his hand, an official said.

Armugam Pallaswami Devendra Mudaliar, then a resident of Antop Hill in central Mumbai, was nabbed from the Fort area in South Mumbai, the official said. He was working for a travel agency using a fake identity.

Mudaliar, who faces more than five cases in Mumbai and Gujarat, was wanted in a theft and housebreaking case registered in 2008 at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police station, he said.

As he was untraceable, a local court declared him as absconding, he said.

The RAK Marg police recently started the investigation afresh and began looking for him at Kalyan, Bhandup and Mahim, he said.
Initially, police got the information that Mudaliar had fled to Tamil Nadu and there were even speculations that he was no more, he said.

A team working on the case learnt from police records that Mudaliar has a tattoo on his hand. The team also found his signature, he said.

With the help of these details, police tracked Mudaliar to the city’s Fort area on Thursday, he said. After verification of the tattoo and his signature, police arrested him in the 15-year-old case, he said.
