Holi: DU female students protest against ‘curbs’ on movement

    [ad_1]

Women students at Delhi University’s Rajiv Gandhi Hostel for Girls (RGHG) raised slogans and protested on Wednesday against university hostel curfews that prohibit students from leaving the premises until 6 PM, due to Holi.

The section officer issued a notice on March 2 informing hostel residents that visitors would not be permitted on Holi and that they could only leave after 6 PM.

“Residents can only go out after 6 PM on 8th March. No guests/visitors will be allowed on the day of the Holi festival,” the notice stated.

Students expressed outrage at the movement restrictions, claiming that they were uncalled for and arbitrary. Women students reported being confined to dorms on International Women’s Day, which this year coincided with the Holi celebration.

Nevertheless, university authorities stated that the warning was provided every year and that students might leave after signing an agreement.

Students at the RGHG complex yelled chants in opposition to the transfer on Wednesday afternoon, alleging that the hostel’s gates were sealed to prevent students from leaving.

  • Imran Khan announces to launch ‘Jail Bharo’ movement from next week

Imran Khan announces to launch ‘Jail Bharo’ movement from next week

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has announced that the “Jail Bharo” movement will start next week Wednesday from Lahore, Geo News reported.

“We will fill jails, they [authorities] will have no space left to hide,” Khan said while addressing the audience through his televised video and warned the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led (PDM) government.

Blaming the incumbent coalition government for its “political victimization” of his party leaders and allies, Khan claimed that the police entered the homes of PTI workers in Multan and were tasked with such threatening tactics.

In his televised address from Lahore’s Zaman Park residence from where he has been residing since being shot in the legs on November 3 last year, Khan said, “They want to enslave us by threatening to put us in jails.”

In the wake of sedition cases filed against his party leaders including Fawad Chaudhry, Azam Swati and Shahbaz Gill, Imran Khan on February 4 announced “Jail Bharo Tehreek” and asked PTI workers and supporters to prepare for movement across the country, reported Geo News.

The interim government is strongly against the PTI, he added.

While referring to the caretaker setup, he said: “The man with a questionable character was brought in. We have a list of 23 people who had inflicted atrocities of which 16 were brought in.”

The PTI chief also recalled the “torture” inflicted on his party’s leaders highlighting the treatment meted out to Swati, Gill, and Fawad.

“Never in history have such acts been committed against political opponents,” Khan lamented.

The tensions between the incumbent government and the PTI have heightened, with no sign of respite as the elections in two provinces — Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — near, following the party’s decision to dissolve the assemblies. Punjab and KP assemblies were dissolved by the PTI on January 14 and January 18, respectively, according to Geo News.

Firing fresh broadside at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI chief said: “It is dangerous that the CEC [Chief Election Commissioner] is showing his inability on conducting the election.”

Khan’s fresh criticism comes hours after President Arif Alvi summoned CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja for an urgent meeting on February 20 regarding the announcement of the date for fresh general elections.

He said that they dissolved the provincial assemblies of Punjab and KP as per the knowledge that the country’s Constitution clarifies that the elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of any assembly.

“The caretaker government and the interim chief ministers would be illegal on the 91st day,” he added.

No disaster could be bigger than that when the judiciary failed to ensure the implementation of the Constitution, he said while hitting out hard at the polls organizing authority. “There is no justice where the rule of law collapses.”

Khan said that they had been claiming that the coalition government did not have the mandate and they cannot run the country.
Blaming the interim government for obstructing the probe against the assassination attack on him in Wazirabad on November 3 last year, the PTI chief said “its job is to only conduct elections”.

“The interim government first comes and stops the [joint investigation team] JIT and steals records. When an officer goes to collect the JIT report, it is found that only 11 pages of the report are remaining,” he said, adding that the JIT records are being claimed to have gone missing.

The former premier, lambasting the interim setup in Punjab, said that all links were pointing at them and they were worried about being caught, reported Geo News.

  • Oregon overturns ‘second amendment sanctuary’ law in blow to gun movement

Oregon overturns ‘second amendment sanctuary’ law in blow to gun movement

    [ad_1]

An Oregon court dealt a blow to the state’s “second amendment sanctuary” movement, deciding on Wednesday that local governments cannot ban police from enforcing certain gun laws in a ruling that could hold national ramifications for anti-gun control efforts.

At the center of the lawsuit was a 2020 measure passed in Columbia county, a conservative area in the Democratic state, that argued state and federal gun laws did not apply in the county and banned local officials from enforcing the regulations. The rural region was one of some 1,200 in the US, from Virginia to New Mexico to Florida, to pass a second amendment sanctuary resolution.

The Oregon state court of appeals ruled the law, which included fines for officials who enforce most federal and state gun laws, violated a law granting the state the authority to regulate firearms. The ordinance would effectively “create a ‘patchwork quilt’ of firearms laws in Oregon”, the court found.

“It would have the potential to lead to uncertainty for firearms owners concerning the legality of their conduct as they travel from county to county,” Judge Douglas Tookey wrote.

The gun sanctuary movement, which first took off nationwide in 2018, had not yet faced a major legal challenge. The ruling will have wide implications in Oregon, where multiple localities have declared themselves second amendment sanctuaries. The state attorney general has sued two other counties that declared themselves sanctuaries. One of those counties eventually rescinded their ordinance.

“Today’s opinion by the court of appeals makes it clear that common sense requirements like safe storage and background checks apply throughout Oregon,” the attorney general, Ellen Rosenblum, said. “Hopefully, other counties with similar measures on the books will see the writing on the wall.”

Gun safety groups, some of which argued the ordinance violated the US constitution, applauded the decision. Eric Tirschwell, the executive director of Everytown Law, called the court’s decision “a win for public safety and the rule of law”.

“Opponents of gun safety laws have every right to advocate for change at the ballot box, statehouse, or Congress, but claiming to nullify them at the local level is both unconstitutional and dangerous,” Tirschwell said.

The Oregon Firearms Federation, a supporter of the Columbia county ordinance, criticized the ruling, saying it included “false attacks” and “calls into question the legitimacy of the court and the likelihood of getting fair rulings from it”.

Imran Khan asks supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement in Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday asked his workers and supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement across the country, media reported.

Khan’s comments come in the wake of sedition cases filed against his party’s Senior Vice-President Fawad Chaudhry and former member of the National Assembly Shandana Gulzar, while Senator Azam Swati and Shahbaz Gill were booked earlier for speaking against the military.

During his televised address, the deposed Prime Minister said his party could have opted for a nationwide strike, but will choose to fill the prisons instead in light of the fears that the country’s economy might deteriorate further, Geo News reported.

“We have two options: Considering what they have been doing, we could have gone for a wheel-jam strike and demonstrations – which is also a way and a democratic one.”

“But since the state of economy is so bad, it’ll worsen. Therefore, I ask all my workers, the Pakistani nation and everyone to prepare for Jail Bharo movement,” Khan said, Geo News reported.

The former premier, while addressing the youth and nation, added that his party won’t stay quiet on the violence being inflicted on his party’s members. “Instead of causing destruction, we would now prepare Jail Bharo movement.”

“It was their plan to weaken Tehreek-e-Insaf by frightening and threatening,” the PTI chief said.

Khan claimed his party never committed such atrocities in its tenure as the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in the centre has.

“Fawad Chaudhry was picked up from home at 3 a.m. What did Shandana Gulzar do that made her a terrorist. As the court gives bail to Sheikh Rashid, more cases are being filed against him,” the PTI chairman said, insisting how action has been taken against every person who called out the regime change, Geo News reported.
