Ban on loudspeakers in mosques: Gujarat HC seeks state govt’s reply

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has sought the state government’s reply on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on the use of loudspeakers for reciting azaan’ (call to prayer) in mosques.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice A J Desai and Justice Biren Vaishnav on Monday allowed Shaktisinh Zala, a Bajrang Dal leader, to join the PIL after the original petitioner Dharmendra Prajapati sought to withdraw it citing threats.

Zala’s lawyer urged the court to allow him to join the litigation in the absence of the original petitioner.

The court listed the matter on April 12 while directing the government to file a reply.

The PIL has sought a ban on the use of loudspeakers for azaan’ at mosques in Gujarat claiming that they add to noise pollution and violate the fundamental rights of citizens.

The petitioner said a muezzin at a mosque in his neighbourhood uses a loudspeaker to recite azaan’ five times a day, causing “great inconvenience”.

Mosques in UAE to offer absentee prayers for Turkey, Syria earthquake victims

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: All mosques across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are going to offer absentee funeral prayers for Turkey, and Syria earthquake victims on Friday.

It was decided to offer prayer following Juma’s prayer after UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed mosques to offer absentee prayers.

Apart from Sheikh Mohamed ordering the provision of USD 100 million for the relief of earthquake victims, UAE has sent a team for the search and rescue operations.

UAE residents who are willing to help the victims can make donations at the Turkish Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Red Crescent, Turkish Red Crescent, UNICEF, etc.

Earthquake death toll surpasses 21,500 in Turkey, Syria

Meanwhile, the death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria four days ago has surpassed 21,500, according to the latest data released by authorities and rescuers.

The death toll from the earthquakes climbed to 17,674 in Turkey, with 72,879 injuries, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Thursday.

International search and rescue teams, including an 82-member Chinese rescue team that arrived in Turkey on Wednesday, rushed to the quake-impacted zone to assist in rescue efforts.

  • Entry of women into mosques for offering namaz permitted: AIMPLB to SC

Entry of women into mosques for offering namaz permitted: AIMPLB to SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the entry of women into mosques for offering namaz inside is permitted.

The board said a Muslim woman is free to enter a mosque for prayers and it is her option to exercise her right to avail such facilities as available for prayers in a mosque.

The AIMPLB said this in an affidavit filed in the apex court which is seized of a plea relating to the entry of Muslim women into mosque for offering namaz.

“It is submitted that the questions raised in the present petition are not in the background of state action. The practices of religion in the places of worship (which in the present matter are mosques) are purely private bodies regulated by ‘Muttawalis’ of the mosques,” the affidavit, filed through advocate M R Shamshad, said.

One Farha Anwar Hussain Shaikh has filed a petition in the top court in 2020 and has sought a direction that the alleged practices of prohibition of entry of Muslim women into mosques in India are illegal and unconstitutional. The plea is likely to be heard by the apex court in March.

The affidavit said the AIMPLB, being a body of experts without any state powers, can only issue advisory opinion based on Islamic principles.

It said the AIMPLB and the apex court, for that matter, cannot enter into the arena of detailed arrangements of a religious place, which is completely privately managed entity for religious practices of believers in religion.

“Considering the said religious texts, doctrines, and religious beliefs of the followers of Islam, it is submitted that entry of women into mosques for offering namaz inside mosques is permitted,” it said.

“Thus, a Muslim woman is free to enter into a masjid (mosque) for prayers. It is her option to exercise her right to avail such facilities as available for prayers in a masjid,” the affidavit said.

It said the AIMPLB does not want to comment on any contrary religious opinion to this effect.

The affidavit said that Islam has not made it obligatory on Muslim women to join daily five times prayers in congregation nor is it obligatory for woman to offer weekly Friday ‘Namaz’ in congregation, though it is so on Muslim men.

“The Muslim woman is differently placed because, as per doctrines of Islam, she is entitled to the same religious reward (sawab) for praying as per her option, either in masjid or at home,” it said.

The affidavit said there is no religious text authorising “free intermingling” of genders in any masjid.

“It is submitted that the Masjid An-Nabawi in Medina has separate spaces/chambers for men and women inside the mosque. In the area surrounding the Masjid An-Nabawi, designated and separate spaces are available for men and women worshippers with temporary barricades in place demarcating them,” it said.

The affidavit said when it comes to performing namaz around the Kaaba in Mecca, there are temporary arrangements by putting barricades to provide separation between men and women worshippers during the prayer.

“The etiquettes of prayer, particularly no free inter-mixing of both sexes, are adhered to willingly, strictly, and sincerely by all worshippers whether men or women,” it said.

Saudi Arabia: 34 Women Appointed to Key Roles in Two Holy Mosques

In the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina, the Saudi Arabian government has appointed 34 women to leadership positions. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Mosques has stated that the appointments are intended to enhance visitor services at the two holy mosques.

According to the statement, the move “is part of the qualitative changes the Kingdom seeks for qualified Saudi women to serve female visitors to the two holy mosques.”

In August 2021, Saudi Arabia appointed two women as assistants to the head of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia announced the appointment of 32 women as drivers in the Haramain Express Train Leaders Program.

The oil-rich Kingdom has taken a number of measures to empower women in recent years, including allowing women to drive and enlist in military service.

Saudi Arabia restricts external loudspeakers in mosques

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has issued directives to restrict the use of external loudspeakers in mosques across the country, local media reported.

The Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Dr Abdul Latif bin Abdul Aziz Al Sheikh has set the number of external loudspeakers at four which are only to be used in mosques to make the prayer calls.

Dr Al-Sheikh instructed all imams to remove excess loudspeakers, if any, from mosques and store them in warehouses for later use or give them away to mosques that do not have enough.

The minister’s directives come about two months before the month of Ramzan, which is expected to fall on March 23.

In 2021, Abdul Latif Al Sheikh, issued a circular limiting the use of external loudspeakers to only use the loudspeakers for Azaan (call for prayer) and iqamah (the second call for the congregational prayer).

He added that the decision indicates that “the loudness level of the devices should not exceed one-third of the degree of the loudspeaker device.”
