Varanasi: SC to hear plea for ‘Wuzu’ at Gyanvapi mosque on April 14

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine on April 14, a plea for alternative arrangement for ‘wuzu’ for worshippers at Gyanvapi mosque, Varanasi. The plea said that due to Ramazan, the number of worshippers have increased.

Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi mentioned the matter on behalf of Muslim side before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.

The bench told Ahmadi that this is a procedural issue. The counsel requested the court to hear the matter on Monday and said “the water for wuzu is being used for a drum. There are more worshippers due to Ramazan.”

He further added that he is insisting because of Ramzan. However, the Chief Justice said it would be difficult for Justice Surya Kant, who was part of the earlier bench, to join for hearing. After hearing brief submissions, the bench said it will hear the matter on April 14.

In November last year, the apex court had extended the protection of the area inside Gyanvapi mosque, where a ‘Shivling’ was found, till further orders.

The top court had said the interim order passed in May 2022, in connection with the protection of the area inside Gyanvapi mosque where a ‘Shivling’ was found, during a survey, will remain in operation till further orders.

Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Varanasi, in its plea, contended the ablution area of the mosque where the “said object” has been found which, the petitioner maintains, is in fact a part of an old fountain. The plea further added that it was sealed by the district authorities and remains sealed till date, and the washroom alongside the same also remains sealed.

The plea contended that it has created inconvenience for the worshippers where they are deprived of the wuzukhana needed for offering namaz as well as the washroom. It pointed that the door to access the washroom was through the ablution area and the same remains sealed.

Arab League condemns Israeli raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque

    [ad_1]

Cairo: The Arab League (AL) has condemned Israel for raiding the flashpoint holy site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem.

In a statement released after an urgent meeting held in Cairo on Wednesday, the pan-Arab body held Israel fully responsible for the consequences of the escalation that would threaten peace and security in the region, urging the international community to protect the Palestinian people and their right to freedom of worship, Xinhua news agency reported.

Early on Wednesday, Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which is holy to both Muslims and Jews, and clashed with dozens of Palestinian worshippers inside. At least 12 were injured during the clashes. Israeli police said they stormed the compound because Palestinians had brought fireworks, sticks, and rocks and barricaded themselves inside the mosque.

During the AL meeting, which was called for by Jordan, Palestine and Egypt, an Arab consensus was reached to “condemn the crimes of the occupation forces against worshipers in the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and categorically reject the Israeli violations that aim to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its sanctity,” according to the AL statement.

In an earlier statement, AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit strongly condemned the Israeli raids and called on the international community “to act quickly in order to stop Israel’s dangerous escalation, which threatens to ignite the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories”.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry voiced its strong rejection of the Israeli escalation at Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Israeli police’s “blatant attacks” on Palestinian worshippers.

“Egypt held Israel responsible for such dangerous escalation, which would undermine the truce efforts that Egypt is engaging in with its regional and international partners,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry also strongly condemned the Israeli raid on the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported.

The Ministry called on the international community to “assume its responsibilities by stopping these attacks and holding the Israeli government responsible for the crimes it is committing and their consequences”.

SRINAGAR: At least 14 Palestinians have been injured and hundreds arrested in an Israeli police raid on Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque, triggering clashes in the West Bank, cross-border strikes in the Gaza Strip and fears of wider escalation over the holiday period, media reports said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 14 people sustained wounds from rubber-tipped bullets, beatings, teargas inhalation and stun grenades, and added that Israeli forces had prevented its medics from reaching the area. Firas al-Jibrini, a Palestinian lawyer, said police arrested about 500 people who were taken for questioning.

As per media reports, Israeli police said they moved in after “several law-breaking youths and masked agitators” brought fireworks, sticks and stones and barricaded themselves into the mosque. Police said the youths chanted violent slogans and locked the front doors.

The Temple Mount, located in occupied East Jerusalem and holy to both Jews and Muslims, is regularly the scene of violence. This year’s overlap of Ramadan and Passover, however, increases the possibility of friction as the city hosts an unusually large influx of pilgrims.

Al-Aqsa is the third-holiest site in Islam and is typically packed with worshippers during Ramadan.
