Jim VandeHei, From ‘Win the Morning’ to ‘Choose Joy’
[ad_1]

VandeHei’s new Zen incarnation fits right in with the rest of Finish Line, a daily Axios newsletter that promises “tips & tricks for thinking smarter about life,” and works as a sort of Goop for aspiring CEOs, with nuggets of health, social-science and psychology, accompanied by frequent aspirational bits of feel-good wisdom. One contribution from Allen featured Palantir’s CEO explaining why you should run like a snail. Another, from VandeHei and Erica Pandey, promoted hand-strengthening exercises as a key to longevity.
“The idea behind Finish Line was, You’re watching Netflix with your significant other,” says Allen, whose byline also tops newsier newsletters. “You pick up your phone. You can doom scroll, and read something that makes you feel bad. Or you can actually use Finish Line to give you something healthy, helpful, hopeful.”
Perhaps that’s how civilians are meant to engage with it.
But I knew about the run-like-a-snail and the exercise-your-hands columns, not to mention the peace and love vibe, because I’m a journalist in Washington and there seems to be a whole culture built around fellow Beltway insiders emailing and Slacking and IMing one another excerpts from Finish Line, often accompanied by some version of “WTF.” Who are these guys, champions of “flood the zone” coverage, to be sermonizing about choosing joy or avoiding doomscrolling? Axios wouldn’t hire a career coach or fitness expert for political coverage — could it be that they’re elaborately pranking us by doing the reverse?
The common denominator of most of the folks who gawk at the leadership columns is that — unlike me — they interacted at some point as journalistic colleagues or competitors of VandeHei, whose former public image was as a leader who favored martial analogies and the chest-thumping style of a football coach’s locker room pep talk. As a cofounder of POLITICO, he willed a game-changing publication into being before leaving amid, to put it mildly, acrimony over his leadership and headlines about financial losses and a polarized culture. He started Axios soon after. Both publications have since sold. A few of my colleagues lived through all of this, but I only showed up six years afterwards. My sole experience with VandeHei was in a previous job as editor of a magazine that covered the fireworks of his departure.
Still, the spectacle of any Washington type suddenly not living up to a prior public image is always interesting. Was the old image incomplete? Or did something change to turn Mr. Admirer-of-People-Who-Break-Things into Mr. Admirer-of-Uncommon-Humility? Or is there some other dynamic going on, one that says something about the larger ecosystem of the capital?
“I’m no less hard-charging now,” VandeHei told me. “I still get up at 4:30 in the morning. I still work around the clock. I’m still, I think, demanding of myself and demanding of others. But I would like to think I’ve evolved as a leader about how I take that ambition and energy and harness it in a way that brings out the best.”
That’s more or less what you’ll get out of the columns, too — many of which deploy a familiar foil in order to illustrate the moral of the story: Jim VandeHei. The Jim VandeHei of a few years ago, that is.
In New Jim’s telling, Old Jim was perpetually screwing things up with his temper and impulsivity and ego. Old Jim’s booboos represent object lessons for New Jim’s wisdom, anchoring columns about the importance of being kind when firing people, embracing “soft power” to avoid running a sweatshop, or not descending into unwinnable conflicts.
It’s a charming literary device. To be sure, the screw-ups humble New Jim is pinning on callow Old Jim are generally misdemeanor offenses, the kind of stuff that’s relatively easy to cop to if you’re a man who sold his start-up for a mint — mostly small-ball tactical blunders, not big-picture blowups like the ones that punctuated the split from this publication.
Aside from one man’s reckoning (or not) with his own track record, the leadership columns actually reflect something bigger, both about society at this moment, and about how people boss in 2023. The Beltway culture that incubated most of today’s top journalists — and top political staffers, and top policy makers — was one that valued paying your dues, sucking up subpar wages and subpar treatment in order to establish yourself in a hyper-competitive game. Successful organizations were also high-burnout ones.
For reasons ranging from generational tastes to Covid-era labor-force challenges, it’s a model that is teetering.
“I think younger workers demanded something much different of us than we demanded of our employer when we got into the game, right?,” VandeHei says. “Like, let’s be honest, when we got a job, coming out of college, we wanted to get a paycheck. And we didn’t want someone to hit us, right? We never thought about culture.” Today’s journalism newbies, he thinks, are apt to say, “I want more. I want purpose. I want to make sure that you as a company care about things that are important to me, diversity and inclusion.”
Of course, he’s hardly the only one who has made that discovery. Management thinking everywhere in the knowledge industry has evolved — it’s just that most of the George Pattons suddenly finding their inner Dalai Lamas don’t seem quite so eager to share it with the world. VandeHei, with his self-promoting instinct (and a column to fill), opts to shout the new values from the rooftops, a Nixon-to-China reinvention that the political scribe might once have enjoyed covering. As such, he’s turned himself into perhaps the Beltway’s highest-profile example of a very 2023 model of leadership: The assertive empath.
VandeHei says people have ribbed him about the wise-man columns, so he’s not completely unself-aware. But in person he comes off as a true believer — and no one in-house suggested to me that there’s a secret dungeonmaster lurking beneath the public good-guy performance. It’s part of his style: In every one of his incarnations he has always been a zealous missionary for whatever leaderly religion he was espousing.
All the same, the other truth of modern media is that, just as the worker bees have changed, so have some of the stars. Arianna Huffington went from CEO to brand-name promoter of better sleep habits. Plenty of high-profile media figures have associated themselves with causes or values or styles without leaving their positions, too.

For Wall Street, there’s no Morning in America for Biden’s economy
[ad_1]

And fresh risks loom for Biden’s reelection campaign economy, including a potentially market-shaking fight over raising the debt limit and the risk of a banking industry meltdown that’s causing lenders to tighten up on credit.
“The U.S. economy is unwell, and it’s starting to show,” Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, tweeted Thursday morning.
The government’s latest GDP report Thursday underlined those concerns. The Commerce Department reported the economy expanded by just 1.1 percent in the first three months of the year, well below expectations of 2 percent growth and down from 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.
Biden’s bullish comments echoed President Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America” reelection theme from 1984. Yet unlike then, the economy is clearly slowing now, presenting Biden with a potential hurdle to his securing a second term.
Still, the GDP report included some bright spots, including continued strong consumer spending, which drives about two-thirds of economic growth. And the economy has remained remarkably resilient, adding over 300,000 jobs per month in the first quarter, something Biden noted in comments on the growth figures on Thursday.
“Today, we learned that the American economy remains strong, as it transitions to steady and stable growth,” the president said in a prepared statement. “This past quarter, real personal disposable income increased and American consumers continued to spend, even as the overall pace of growth moderated.”
Yet most Wall Street banks and many economists — even left-leaning allies of Biden — predict a downshift once the impact of all the Fed rate hikes works through the system along with the fallout from tighter credit standards.
“We continue to expect economic growth to slow, and we are preparing for a range of scenarios,” Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf said on the bank’s recent first-quarter earnings call.
Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said on a call last week: “We see and our experts see a mild recession coming.”
Similar comments are peppering earnings calls across the finance industry. Few executives are predicting a major decline in the economy, but many believe the long run of modest or better growth will finally come to a close with the jobless rate starting to rise again from record lows.
And even some Biden allies like former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers are warning that the economy will have to decline significantly to finally break the back of inflation.
“I think we’re going to have difficulty getting near a 2 percent inflation target until and unless the economy slows down substantially,” Summers said at an investment conference this week.
The latest reading on the economy was driven by a declining housing industry slammed by higher interest rates. Consumer spending remained resilient but is also likely to come under more pressure as Covid-era savings run out and inflation continues to pinch wallets. And the report showed inflation rising, not falling as the Fed expects, meaning another rate hike is likely when central bank policymakers meet next week.
“This morning’s data was the worst of both worlds, with growth down and inflation up,” Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance, said in a client note.
And even Biden, in his reelection announcement, acknowledged that while he envisions greater prosperity ahead, he is aware of the risks, including prices that remain too high.
“We’ve got a lot more work to do, though,” he told union workers. “I know folks are struggling with inflation,” he said, but added that “it’s a global problem.”

The morning routine backlash: you can get up at 5am – but it won’t make you popular
[ad_1]
Name: The 5-9 morning routine.
Age: New. It is a trend.
Really? Wasn’t it an 80s song, by Sheena Easton? And another 80s song, by Dolly Parton? And a film? And a common way of describing many people’s working day? No, that is 9 to 5. We’re talking about 5-9. Actually, we’re talking about the 5-9 backlash, but first we had better deal with what 5-9 is.
Not 8.55, then? Nope.
Nor a children’s clothes size? No, it’s the four hours before 9, so from 5am to 9am.
Not a time I know much about, but go on. Then this could be for you. The 5-9 routine has become a thing.
What kind of thing? A lifestyle one.
Where? TikTok, obviously. It’s about getting up at the crack of dawn, doing your fitness thing, your yoga, a cold water wild swim, beauty routines, a super-healthy breakfast, followed by a bit of drumming, Duolingo, perhaps decluttering the house, all before work …
That’s really a trend? A big one.
How big? More than 200m views on the platform.
It’s making me feel tired and depressed just thinking about it. Well, it turns out, it’s not just you.
Yay! Go on. So, @margaretskiff posted her own “5-9” video, which shows her waking up bleary-eyed when the alarm goes off at 8.30am, then spending half an hour lying in bed squinting at social media and playing games on her phone.
Totally relatable. And that takes her to 9, right? Yeah, she pulls a crumpled sweatshirt over the clothes she slept in, wraps a blanket around herself and hops the two steps to her desk, where she sits down to work.
Many views? More than 3m.
Not bad. Not 200m though, is it? More than 400,000 likes, too …
Including me; I like it. The comments show she is not alone out there. “I feel at home here,” and: “My people,” are among the comments.
Any breakfast? Not in this one, but she has a bagel in another video. Another anti 5-9er, @cameraonkira, makes her breakfast sandwich before taking it back to bed and settling down for a bit of Netflix.
Love it. It’s almost as if a lot of what you see on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram is a scroll through an unattainable dream, so it’s reassuring to stumble across something that looks as if it’s happening on the planet you inhabit. Hey, you could be on to something there.
Do say: “Alexa, cancel the alarm!”
Don’t say: “Sleep? Sleep is for wimps.”

Mumbai: Woman CEO on morning walk killed by SUV in freak accident
[ad_1]
Mumbai: A 39-year-old woman CEO was killed when she was hit by a speeding SUV that met with a freak accident around dawn on Sunday, officials said.
According to the police, at around 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, the victim, who has been identified as Rajlaxmi Rajkrishnan, was walking along the Worli promenade, a venue popular with joggers and walkers.
Suddenly, a speeding SUV coming from behind crashed into a road-divider, and as the driver lost control, the vehicle hit Rajlaxmi with full force at a high speed, an eyewitness said.
Rajlaxmi was flung into the air and landed several feet away, seriously injuring her head even as other shocked walkers-joggers rushed to her help.
They also pinned down the SUV driver, who has been identified as Sumer Merchant (23), who also sustained minor injuries.
The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The Worli Police initially detained Merchant for questioning before arresting him in the afternoon.
Merchant has been charged with the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act pertaining to rash and negligent driving, causing hurt etc.
The police have sent his blood sample for test to confirm if he was in an inebriated state.
The deceased woman was the CEO of a tech firm and also a member of a local joggers’ group, while the accused is linked to the entertainment industry.
