Eid-ul-Fitr 2023 Moon Sighting: Here’s when the moon is likely to be seen in the country – Kashmir News

Every Ramzan is a nail-biting finish for fasting Muslims. As the month draws to a close, the exact date for Eid-ul-Fitr, which ends Ramzan, depends on the sighting of the new moon.

For theological matters, Islam follows a lunar calendar. The lunar year, however, adds up to about 354 days. Thus Islamic months are out of step with the solar year and the date of Eid falls back by about 11 days every solar or Gregorian year.

The month of Ramadan Or Ramzan is currently going on which is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims worldwide gear up to welcome Eid ul Fitr, a joyous and triumphant day where the faithful individuals claim the ultimate prize; their return to a state of purity.

According to the Islamic calendar, fasting is observed in the ninth month of the year and Eid is celebrated on the first date of 10th Shawwal. On this day the fasts of all the fasting people are completed. However, the date of celebrating Eid is finalized according to the sighting of the moon. The day when the moon is visible, that day is called Chand Mubarak. The date of Eid is first announced in Saudi Arabia

The precise date of this festival is decided by the sighting of the crescent moon. The International Astronomy Center has announced that Islamic countries are expected to sight the crescent of Shawwal on Thursday, April 20, which will likely be the end of Ramadan, Gulf News reported.

“However, it may not be possible to spot the crescent with the naked eye or a telescope from all parts of Asia and Australia, although it is possible that some Islamic countries may be able to sight it,” the report stated further. If the moon is sighted on Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on April 22, Saturday.

According to The Saudi Astronomical Society that astronomical calculations indicate that Friday will be the first day of the month of Shawwal and Eid Al-Fitr.

Based on the society’s astronomical calculations, Thursday (April 20) will be the last day of Ramadan, which is also the day all Islamic countries will investigate the new moon of Shawwal and Eid al-Fitr.

The head of the society Majid Abu Zahra said: “The sun will set from the horizon of Makkah Al-Mukarramah on the day of the investigation at 6:42 in the evening.

At that time, the moon will be above the horizon at a height of 04 degrees and its angular separation from the Sun ‘elongation’ will be 05 degrees, and its illumination is 0.2 percent. It will set at 7:06 in the evening 24 minutes after sunset, and thus the conditions for entering the month of Shawwal will be astronomically fulfilled.”

He noted that seeing the moon with the naked eye or telescope will not be possible, but could be seen with a CCD camera.

    Traditions of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is often called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast.” The practice of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the holy month of Ramadan (“Sawm”) is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims believe that it was during the month of Ramadan that the text of the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Fitr with prayers called “Salat Al Eid” in Arabic. There is no audible call to prayer for the Eid prayers. Muslims will gather in mosques or open spaces and offer two units of prayer – called “Rakat”. The prayers are followed by a sermon, in which the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for every being across the world.

It’s a tradition to wear new clothes and on the way to the mosque, eat something sweet such as a date, and recite a small prayer called a takbeer.

Other key elements of the Eid celebrations are giving money to the poor (known as ‘Zakat al-Fitr’, the amount to be given depends on the possessions someone has), sending Eid greetings and feasting with families.

For many Muslims, Eid al-Fitr is a festival to show gratitude to Allah for the help and strength he gave them throughout the month of Ramadan to help them practice self-control.

The phrase commonly used by Muslims as a greeting on this day is “Eid Mubarak”, which is Arabic for ‘blessed festival’. The proper response to Eid Mubarak is “Khair Mubarak”, which wishes goodness on the person who has greeted you.

  • Saudi Arabia calls on Muslims to sight Shawwal moon on Thursday

Saudi Arabia calls on Muslims to sight Shawwal moon on Thursday

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court on Friday called on all Muslims living in the kingdom to sight the crescent moon of Shawwal 1444, 2023 on Thursday evening, 29 Ramzan corresponding to April 20.

In an announcement, the Kingdom’s court called on Muslims who sight the moon with the naked eye, or through binoculars to report to the nearest court and register their testimonies, or report to the nearest centre that can contact a court.

If Thursday, April 20, is the last day of Ramzan, Shawwal will fall on Friday, April 21, as the Islamic month is 29 or 30 days long according to the lunar calendar. But, if it completes 30 days, Shawwal will fall on Saturday, April 22.

    MS Education Academy

The sighting of the crescent of Shawwal will also mark the day of Eid Al-Fitr which will begin either fall on Friday or Saturday.

    What is Shawwal?

In Islam, Shawwal is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar or lunar calendar consisting of twelve months beginning with Muharram, and ending with Zul-Hijjah. Each month starts with the sighting of the moon. Eid Al Fitr, on the other hand, marks the end of the month-long fast.

The calendar has been observed for more than 1,440 years and is used to date important Islamic events including the start of Ramzan, Eid-Al-Fitr, and the beginning of the Haj.

The month of Shawwal is also of special importance to the Muslims. It is during this month that Allah has bestowed the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. The month is considered to be Allah’s reward for the successful completion of Ramzan.

Fasting for a period of six days in the month of Shawwal is of immense virtue to the Muslims. It also compensates for any short falling that one might have made during the fasting of Ramzan.

  • UAE: Rashid Rover’s moon landing date announced

UAE: Rashid Rover’s moon landing date announced

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A Japanese spacecraft carrying the United Arab Emirates’ Rashid Rover – the Arab region’s first mission to the Moon – is scheduled to land on the moon on Tuesday, April 25 at 8:40 pm UAE time.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) on Wednesday took to Twitter and wrote, “The landing date and time of the HAKUTO-R lander, carrying aboard the Rashid Rover, on the surface of the Moon, is set for April 25 at 8.40pm (UAE time).”

“The date is subject to change depending on the mission’s operations. Alternative landing dates are April 26, May 1, and 3 May,” MBRSC added.

    MS Education Academy

Built by an Emirati team at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), the Rashid rover has spent more than four months in space since its launch on December 11, 2022.

The rover was sent into space from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on March 21 and has since been gradually approaching the surface.

MBRSC further said that the Rashid Rover is currently orbiting the Moon at an altitude of about 100 km at perilune (periapsis – the points in the orbit that is closest to the center of the moon) and about 2,300 km at apolune (apoapsis – the points in the orbit farthest to the center).

At around 7:40 pm on April 25, the lander carrying the Rashid Rover will perform multiple orbit control maneuvers to reach a 100km circular orbit around the Moon before starting the landing sequence.

During the landing sequence, the lander will perform a braking burn, firing its main propulsion system to decelerate from orbit. Utilizing a series of pre-set commands, the lander will adjust its altitude and reduce velocity to make a soft landing on the confirmed site of Atlas Crater in the Mare Frigoris.

Before landing, the team will prepare by participating in 12 simulated rehearsals at ground stations.

On the surface of the moon, the rover will conduct scientific tests that are expected to contribute to qualitative developments in the fields of science, communication technologies, and robotics.

The mission’s primary goal is to study lunar plasma and provide answers about lunar dust, the lunar surface, the movement of the moon and how different surfaces interact with lunar particles.

The rover will also send back images and collect data on lunar soil and dust once it reaches the lunar surface.
