India’s retail inflation above RBI’s target level for second month

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Retail inflation in India remained above RBI’s 6 per cent upper tolerance band for the second straight month in February 2023, with the Consumer Price Index pegged at 6.44 per cent, government data released on Monday showed.

The retail inflation in rural and urban India was 6.72 per cent and 6.1 per cent, respectively. Among groups, cereals and products, and fruits, among others, contributed to the elevation in retail inflation in February.

Further, Consumer Food Price Index in February was 5.95 per cent, data showed.

Retail inflation on vegetables, however, declined 11.61 per cent.

Notably, India’s retail inflation, based on Consumer Price Index, during the month of December was at 5.72 per cent, versus 5.88 per cent in November and 6.77 per cent during October.

India’s retail inflation was above RBI’s 6 per cent target for three consecutive quarters and had managed to fall back to the RBI’s comfort zone only in November 2022.

Under the flexible inflation targeting framework, the RBI is deemed to have failed in managing price rises if the CPI-based inflation is outside the 2-6 per cent range for three quarters in a row.

Since May last year, the RBI has increased the short-term lending rate by 250 basis points, including the latest 25 bps hike, to tame inflation. Raising repo rate helps in cooling demand in the economy and thus helps in managing inflation.

Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline.

Meanwhile, average retail inflation in India is projected to be at 5.3 during the next financial year 2023-24, the Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said last month while announcing monetary policy outcomes.

The projection, he had said, was based on the assumption of a normal monsoon.

The average inflation in Q1 2023-24 is expected at 5.0 per cent, Q2 at 5.4 per cent, Q3 at 5.4 per cent, and Q4 at 5.6 per cent, respectively.

For the current financial year 2022-23 ending March, inflation was projected at 6.5 per cent, with an average of 5.7 per cent in the January-March 2023 quarter.

Despite five-star hotels and top restaurants, the taste of Hyderabadis can be experienced in the narrow and busy streets. The city residents are usually seen surrounding the food stalls in the streets across the city. For a street food lover, we recommend visiting Kukatpally (IDL Lake), Madhapur, Charminar, Sindhi Colony, Gachibowli (DLF), Tolichowki and Sainikpuri.

  • No child marriage in Assam in last one month, says CM

No child marriage in Assam in last one month, says CM

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Despite heavy criticism on the police crackdown on child marriages in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that not a single instance of a child marriage had occurred in the state in the previous month due to government’s action.

On February 3, the Assam government launched a ferocious campaign against child marriages throughout the state, registering over 4,000 cases. As many as 3,145 people had been detained as of Tuesday.

“In Assam, not a single child marriage has occurred in the past month. A significant accomplishment, this. Everyone has praised our efforts to combat this social threat,” Sarma remarked during a Press conference in the city.

He claimed that out of all those detained, the courts had granted bail to about 900 people.

“Initially I thought they would be let out of the jails in seven to eight days. But after 14-15 days, the majority of them got bail. The judiciary also praised our action, according to Sarma.

The Gauhati High Court stated on February 14 that there was no need for custodial interrogation of the accused in such circumstances, noting that the widespread arrests made as part of the campaign against child marriage caused “havoc in the private lives of people.”

  • Ramzan 2023 in UAE: Only 30 days away for month of fasting

Ramzan 2023 in UAE: Only 30 days away for month of fasting

    [ad_1]

The first day of Sha’ban 1444 AH (Anno Hegirae in Latin or “in the year of the Hijra”) – 2023 begins on Tuesday, February 21, and serves as a reminder that Ramzan is just around the corner – only 30 days away.

According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, the crescent moon — which indicates the beginning of the Hijri month— of Sha’ban observed on Monday, February 20. Therefore, Tuesday, February 21, will be Sha’ban 1.

Therefore, Monday was the last and 29th day of Rajab 1444 Hijri.

Muslims around the world begin to prepare for the fast of Ramzan from dawn to dusk in the month of Sha’ban. Many people fast on some days of the month to prepare their bodies for Ramzan.

Earlier this year, Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, a member of the International Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, noted that the first day of Ramadan is likely to be Thursday, March 23, 2023.

On the other hand, Eid ul Fitr, marks the end of the month-long fast. Eid ul Fitr is expected to begin on Friday, April 21, 2023.

The start of Ramzan and Eid-Al-Fitr will be confirmed closer to the date, based on the moon-sighting tradition.

    What is Ramzan?

In Islam, Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar— a lunar calendar consisting of twelve months beginning with Muharram, and ending with Zul-Hijjah. Each month starts with the sighting of the moon. Eid Al-Fitr, on the other hand, marks the end of the month-long fast.

The calendar has been observed for more than 1,440 years and is used to date important Islamic events including the start of Ramzan, Eid-Al-Fitr, and the beginning of the Haj.

Ramzan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and is believed to be the month during which the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and abstain from food and drink during this period.
