ED arrests 4 in AP ‘Siemens Project’ money laundering case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday said it has arrested four people in connection with its money laundering probe into alleged diversion of Andhra Pradesh government funds meant for skilling youths in using advanced software.

Soumyadri Shekhar Bose alias Suman Bose, former managing director (MD) of Siemens Industry Software India Pvt Ltd (SISW), Vikas Vinayak Khanvelkar, MD of Designtech Systems Pvt Ltd, Mukul Chandra Agrawal, former financial advisor and authorised signatory of Skillar Enterprises India Pvt Ltd, and Suresh Goyal, a chartered accountant, have been sent to ED custody by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court.

The case pertains to diversion and misutilisation of crores of funds of the state government disbursed for implementation of “Siemens Projects” in which the government aimed at providing advanced software and technical skills to the local youth.

The money laundering case stems from a Andhra Pradesh CID PMLA regarding swindling of government money to the extent of Rs 241 crore in a dubious manner, the agency said.

The probe found “diversion and siphoning off government funds given to Designtech Systems Pvt Ltd through Skillar Enterprises India Pvt Ltd and thereafter, through a web of shell companies under the guise of supply of software, hardware, materials and services without any genuine supplies”, it said.

The purpose for such diversion of funds was to generate cash and thereby, siphon off money from the system without utilising the same for the Siemens Projects for which funds were sanctioned by the government of Andhra Pradesh, it said.

The ED said it has “established” a money trail of diversion of around Rs 70 crore till now.

  • Scientists agree that money can buy happiness

Scientists agree that money can buy happiness

    [ad_1]

New York: People get happy as they earn more, according to a new study which overturns the dominant thinking that money cannot buy happiness.

The study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper, shows that, on average, larger incomes are associated with ever-increasing levels of happiness.

Two prominent researchers, Daniel Kahneman from Princeton University and Matthew Killingsworth from the University of Pennsylvania, surveyed 33,391 adults aged between 18 and 65 who live in the US, are employed and report a household income of at least $10,000 a year.

For the least happy group, happiness rose with income until $100,000, then showed no further increase as income grew. For those in the middle range of emotional well-being, happiness increases linearly with income, and for the happiest group the association actually accelerates above $100,000.

“In the simplest terms, this suggests that for most people larger incomes are associated with greater happiness,” said lead author Killingsworth.

“The exception is people who are financially well-off but unhappy. For instance, if you’re rich and miserable, more money won’t help. For everyone else, more money was associated with higher happiness to somewhat varying degrees,” he added.

The researchers said that the study shows both a happy majority and an unhappy minority exist.

For the former, happiness keeps rising as more money comes in; the latter’s happiness improves as income rises but only up to a certain income threshold, after which it progresses no further.

These findings also have real-world implications, according to Killingsworth.

For one, they could inform thinking about tax rates or how to compensate employees. And, of course, they matter to individuals as they navigate career choices or weigh a larger income against other priorities in life, Killingsworth said.

However, he adds that for emotional well-being money isn’t all. “Money is just one of the many determinants of happiness,” he says. “Money is not the secret to happiness, but it can probably help a bit.”

  • ‘Our concern is ex-Army personnel should get money’, SC to Centre on OROP

‘Our concern is ex-Army personnel should get money’, SC to Centre on OROP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Ministry of Defence to come up with a roadmap for the payment of arrears under the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme by next week, and also told the ministry that it cannot take law in its own hands by issuing communication on payment of arrears in four instalments.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud told Attorney General (AG) R. Venkataramani to submit a comprehensive note by Monday next week showing steps taken so far and also the shortest possible time to pay the arrears.

“Our concern is that our ex-Army personnel should get the money… It is also sad that 4 lakh people have died… come with a good note on Monday…. what exactly quantum which has to be paid. Two, what are the modalities for payment, and three, what are the prioritization. The oldest people, you can take widows first of Army personnel, you can have some categorization…” Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmedi, representing the petitioner, contended before the court that 4 lakh pensioners have died since the filing of the OROP petition.

The bench, also comprising justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala, told the ministry to immediately withdraw its January 20 communication, which said OROP arrears will be paid in four instalments. “First withdraw this (January 20 notification)…then we will consider your application for extension of time”, the bench told the AG.

The Chief Justice queried AG, when are you planning to pay? Venkataramani contended that one instalment of OROP arrears to ex-servicemen has been paid but needs some more time for further payments. The AG added, “by March 31, another Rs 2000 crore will be paid and I want to take it entirely under my supervision, how best we can push it”.

The top court made it clear that the defence ministry’s January 20 communication was completely contrary to its verdict and it cannot unilaterally say it will pay OROP arrears in four instalments.

At the outset, the bench said, “We saw that the communication of January 20, the ministry cannot law in its own hand…issued letter…. after we had fixed time…”. The bench added that if this communication is not withdrawn, it will ask the secretary of defence to be present in the court.

On February 27, the Supreme Court slammed the Ministry of Defence over its January 20 communication in connection with the payment of arrears of OROP in instalments to eligible pensioners of the armed forces.

The apex court was hearing an application filed by Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM), in which they have sought setting aside of the defence ministry’s January 20 communication.

Last year in March, the apex court had delivered a judgment on the plea filed by the IESM through advocate Balaji Srinivasan against the Centre’s formula.

The apex court on January 9, 2023, had granted time till March 15 to the Centre for payment of total arrears of OROP to all eligible pensioners of the armed forces.

Later, the government moved the apex court seeking extension of time till March 15, 2023 for payment of arrears of OROP scheme to all eligible pensioners of the armed forces.

The Centre has so far two extensions from the apex court to clear the arrears after it had first moved the top court in June, last year, and sought three months to compute and make payments in accordance with apex court verdict.

  • ED summons NCP MLA Hasan Mushrif for questioning in money laundering case

ED summons NCP MLA Hasan Mushrif for questioning in money laundering case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has summoned senior NCP leader and MLA Hasan Mushrif for questioning in a money laundering investigation being conducted against him and others, officials said Saturday.

The politician has been asked to depose before the federal probe agency in Mumbai next week so that his statements can be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

The ED had conducted searches at multiple premises linked to him in January. Some fresh searches were conducted over the last few days in Kolhapur and some other locations.

The money laundering case is linked to a probe related to alleged irregularities in the operations of some sugar mills based in the state that are connected to Mushrif, including the Sar Senapati Santaji Ghorpade Sugar Factory Ltd to which his three sons are linked.

Mushrif (68) is a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from the Kagal seat in Kolhapur. He is also the vice president of the party headed by Sharad Pawar.

BJP leader Kirit Somiaya had in 2021 alleged that the former rural development minister (Mushrif) indulged in corrupt practices by holding ‘benami’ entities through his family members and companies. The NCP had then dismissed these charges.

Karnataka: BJP sees red over viral video of Congressman showering money on dancing girl

  • Is liquor scam money being spent on Telangana’s welfare?: Bandi Sanjay

Is liquor scam money being spent on Telangana’s welfare?: Bandi Sanjay

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bandi Sanjay Kumar strongly opposed Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha’s statement that Telangana people would never bow before Delhi rulers.

“Is Kavitha indulging in illegal liquor deals for the sake of Telangana people? Is that ill-gotten money being spent on crop loan waiver or payment of salaries to the employees or towards unemployment allowance?” Sanjay asked.

Addressing a gathering at the state BJP office on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Sanjay wondered in what way the people of Telangana were concerned with the liquor scam involving chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter.

Stating that the people of Telangana had never bowed before to anybody in the country, Sanjay said they were now forced to bow their heads in shame because of the illegal liquor scam involving Kavitha.

“Kavitha’s wicket is down with the liquor scam and very soon, all the BRS wickets would be clean bowled. There is no question of leaving those who were involved in liquor scam and gambling activities,” he said.

The BJP president further alleged that womenfolk of Telangana were subject to insults and humiliation during the KCR regime.

“KCR’s son K T Rama Rao had no time to call on the family members of Dr Preethi who died by suicide due to alleged mental torture by her senior. But he would go to Sania Mirza’s last tennis match,” he criticized.

Bandi went on to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative for women’s welfare. “Apart from constructing 11 crore individual toilets, Modi granted gas connections to nine crore women, constructed houses for 3 crore women, and opened 25 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts for 25 crore women,” he pointed out.

On the other hand, KCR had shown no respect to women. “During his first stint as chief minister, there was not a single woman in his cabinet. There may never be a woman president in BRS. There is no women’s commission. For KCR, only his daughter Kavitha represents the entire womenfolk – whether it was for playing Bathukamma or holding meetings of women,” he said.

Pointed out that BJP had reserved 30 percent of its organisational positions for women, Sanjay said, “The party had made a tribal woman as the President of India; eight women as governors, four as chief ministers and 11 women MPs as Union ministers.”

Assuring that a good number of women who had the chance of winning would be given the party tickets in the upcoming Assembly elections, Sanjay urged women vote to vote in favor of BJP.
