Mumbai woman who chopped mom into pieces made neighbours believe she was ‘alive’ in Kanpur

Mumbai: The Mumbai woman, Rimple Jain – who was arrested for chopping her widowed mother Veena Jain’s body into pieces – created an impression for nearly three months that she was ‘alive’ and had gone for treatment to her native place Kanpur, official sources said.

This and other aspects came out during her ongoing custodial investigations by the team probing the sensational case which came to light last Tuesday (March 14) stunning Mumbaikars.

Rimple – whose relations with her mother were strained – has stuck to her earlier version that she did not kill Veena, but merely chopped off her body into pieces and stored them in plastic bags in a cupboard at home.

She has claimed to the police investigators that her mother died under natural circumstances, allegedly due to a fall on December 27. But since she was scared of getting the blame for it, she resorted to a web of lies and deceit to fool the relatives and the neighbours.

The Ibrahim Kasam Chawl, where the body parts were discovered after the victim’s brother Sureshchandra Phulchand Porwal complained to Kalachowki Police, is situated adjacent to main road in a thickly populated residential-cum-commercial locality of south-central Mumbai, with public movement almost round-the-clock.

This made it difficult for her to dispose of her mother’s body parts without arousing doubts among their relatives or the neighbourhood.

Rimple also revealed she went and bought an electric marble-cutter from a nearby hardware shop – where a police team took her last week to verify her claim – and started cutting Veena’s body the very next day.

When some people around casually inquired after her mother, Rimple told them that “she has gone to Kanpur for medical treatment,” and the matter rested, even as she made frantic efforts to dispose of Veena’s body parts.

Hoping to misguide the snoopy neighbourhood, Rimple would walk up and down the common corridor, pretending to speak to her ‘mom’ on the mobile, asking her loudly “how are you”, “how is the treatment going on,” etc. so the neighbours could hear the ‘conversation’.

The police are attempting to ascertain the exact motives why she did not inform the family, relatives or neighbours of Veena’s death and resorted to a macabre act of cutting, chopping and preserving her body parts at home till they had started decomposing badly.

To ward off the stench, she used to spray a lot of room fresheners and perfumes at home, but despite all her attempts to hide it, the whole crime finally erupted in the open last Tuesday.

Mumbai woman held for killing mom, preserving chopped body pieces at home: Police

Mumbai: A 55-year-old woman was murdered and her body chopped into pieces which were found dumped in the cupboard and water tank in her house in Mumbai, following which police arrested her 23-year-old daughter, an official said on Wednesday.

As per the preliminary investigation, the woman was killed in December 2022, and her body parts are being preserved in her house since then, a senior police officer said without elaborating.

When asked how the body parts were preserved for such a long period and how the accused could have got rid of the foul smell, he said these aspects are being investigated.

While some parts of the highly-decomposed body were found wrapped in a plastic bag kept inside the cupboard of her tenement in Lalbaug area, other parts were found dumped in a water tank, a police official said.

He said the daughter of the woman was found sitting inside the room when police knocked on her door on Tuesday night.

The official said a relative of the woman had gone to the house of the deceased but found the door locked from the inside. The relative grew suspicious due to the foul smell and informed the police.

Police are awaiting a postmortem report and investigating the crime, the official said, adding a case of murder was registered.

“Prima facie, the woman was killed by her daughter in December 2022. If we assume that she severed the body parts at that time, it means she has been staying with the body parts for at least three months. We are trying to find out the motive,” the senior officer added.

Another Kota coaching student commits suicide, says ‘Sorry mom’ in suicide note

Jaipur: Another coaching student in Rajasthan’s Kota committed suicide by hanging himself, police said on Friday.

The incident took place in Kunhadi area of the city, which is a hub for students preparing for various competitive examinations, on Wednesday night.

Abhishek, 17, a resident of UP’s Badaun, UP, was living in a Kota hostel for the last two years and was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). He was not going to coaching for some time but was taking online classes from the hostel itself.

Police officials said that it was reported at 9 p.m. on Thursday that a student was not opening a room in Datar Residency for nearly 24 hours.

“We went to the spot and broke the door of the room. The student was found hanging from a noose. A suicide note has been found from the room.”

In the suicide note, Abhishek wrote: “I am apologising to you. I came to Kota on my own free will. No one pressurised me. Sorry Didi, Mummy Sorry Bhai, Sorry friends. Forgive me, I have lost. That’s why I want to die.”

On receiving information about Abhishek’s suicide, father Aram Singh reached Kota on Friday morning. He said parents know how they raise children and teach them, but the coaching institutes “discriminate”.

“That’s why children are committing suicide. Why is such a situation arising? What is the atmosphere that children are committing suicide,” he questioned.

Aram Singh said that there is pressure from coaching institutes but there is no pressure from parents. “My son never told that he was upset. He used to keep stress to himself.

“Had I known that he will commit suicide, I would have taken it from here before. I say that the government should pay attention. The government should formulate a policy, so that the incident of suicide in our society is stopped.”

Five suicide cases have come to fore in just last two months in Kota.

I recently became a mom. It changed the way I view journalism

The week I came back to work after parental leave, my daughter decided she didn’t want to sleep. My husband was on a work trip, and I was waking up every hour and a half to go through the long list of things she could possibly need – whether it was milk, a diaper change, a cuddle or an extra layer of clothing.

On the third morning, I found myself attempting to run our early breaking news operation while feeding my five-month-old, desperately in need of a shower and coffee. My mother, who had come to help for a few days, waited to take over.

This was not the hard part, but it was the bleary-eyed setting for which the hard part would come.

Days before I returned to work, the Ukraine war had begun. The week I sat at my desk for the first time in months, photos of children’s bodies in Bucha flooded my screen. Still raw from the physical wounds of birth and the emotional rollercoaster of learning to keep my baby alive, I worked through tears as I figured out which newswires we would run, which stories should take precedence, and whose suffering mattered most that day.

It’s different as a mother, I knew instantly. I’ve always been sensitive – soft, even – in the face of my work. Interviews replay in my mind for months; writing difficult stories sends me into a dark place. And yet, though empathy is not specific to parents, this is my new, fresh layer of vulnerability. I think of children lost to war, children lost to viruses, children lost to mass shootings, children who became adults and then were lost to police violence. Then I think of the mothers – mothers who spent those harrowing hours bringing children into this world and then lost them.

In my new world, I see every photo or video and think: someone worked so hard to keep this person alive. Someone woke up every hour to feed this baby, to soothe her to sleep, to watch her every breath when she had her first fever. It doesn’t matter where the child was born, or to whom. When Tyre Nichols was killed, my husband sent me an article about his last moments. “I think it’s profound that in so many of these situations, people are calling out for their moms,” he said. I pictured his mother, RowVaughn Wells, and thought: I’m so sorry you couldn’t get to your baby.

Science and lore both claim that a mother’s brain is physically changed when she has a baby. The amygdala becomes attuned to your baby’s needs, and the crying is louder, the affection stronger, the smell of your baby sweeter. This new brain activity, along with – for lack of a better term – raging hormones, created a new self, a new me. My body was always ready to react, to jump up and run to her side. Instead of savoring a few hours of sleep, I would stay awake looking up things that could go wrong and how to avoid them.

Less clear is how your brain reacts to other people’s children, but some data shows that a parent’s new empathy for their baby extends to external stimuli as well. We also know that humans tend to extend their empathy to people they can relate to – whether it’s people who have undergone similar experiences, or those who look or seem more like them.

This seems self-serving – that we care more about people who remind us of us. But the science belies a more universal truth. “There is no hierarchy of suffering,” the psychologist and Holocaust survivor Edith Eger is known for saying. I believe there is another layer: there is no hierarchy of empathy. Being a mother does not make me inherently more empathetic than someone who didn’t give birth, nor does it mean I somehow know how to act in the face of the pain that so acutely affects me now. There are different angles from which we access the empathy we apply to the world.

Within the context of my own life, this is now mine: I witness the brutality of the daily news cycle against the soft and warm sweetness of my now toddler’s bedtime ritual.

As I edit a news story about Nichols, read the news about teenagers losing their lives to gun violence in my city, or plan an article about lawmakers choosing not to give families with poor children money, I wonder what to do with the way I now look at the world. Does it mean these stories of loss and suffering are too sharp and painful to be cast on thousands of people every morning, or that we need to spend more time with more people, attempting to capture their life piece by piece, in the public eye? Does it mean that I should do what many of my friends outside the media world tell me they’ve started doing – stop watching the news?

For now, 15 months after becoming a parent, I’ve chosen not to decide, and let myself be changed. I know there may not be any benefit to feeling everything, but it’s certainly better than feeling nothing. And eventually, maybe I can share this with my daughter and tell her that bringing her into the world taught me more about the work I do, the humanity I aim to distill into words, than perhaps anything else I’ve done.
