Adani tried to get to me through his ‘wheeler dealers’: Mahua Moitra

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has alleged that industrialist Gautam Adani tried to “get to me” and some other people through his “wheeler dealers” and criticised NCP leader Sharad Pawar for meeting the Gujarat-based businessman.

No politician should engage with Adani till government takes on charges levelled against him, she said.

Without taking Pawar’s name, Moitra said she hoped the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar puts the country first and not his old relationships.

    MS Education Academy

“Adani tried utmost to get to me & few others through his friends/ wheeler dealers. He couldn’t even find the door, let alone get past it. I have nothing to discuss on 1:1 basis with Adani. I firmly believe till govt takes action no politician should engage with this man,” she said in a tweet.

Moitra, who has been one of the the harshest critics of the Adani group, also tweaked a Hindi idiom to sharpen her attack — “Adani hamaam mein to saare hi nange hai”, which roughly means everyone being in the same boat as far as Adani is concerned.

“I have no fear in taking on Great Marathas. Can only hope they have good sense to put country before old relationships.

“And no, my tweet is not anti-opposition unity. Rather it is pro-public interest,” she said.

Industrialist Gautam Adani met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday morning at the politician’s residence, Silver Oak, in South Mumbai.

Mahua Moitra takes potshots at govt over Adani issue, shell companies

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Monday took potshots at the government while sharing a Corporate Affairs Ministry’s two years old press release which stated that more than 2.38 lakh shell companies were identified between 2018 and 2021.

She tweeted the official statement while tagging it to her earlier tweet posted in the morning, where she had tagged a response to a Rajya Sabha question on shell companies, with the government saying that data regarding offshore shell companies owned by Indian citizens is “unavailable”.

The question was by MP John Brittas – who had asked for “details of offshore shell companies whose Ultimate Beneficial Ownership (UBO) are held by Indian citizens”.

In its reply, the government said: “It is submitted that an offshore shell company is not defined in the Acts administered by the Ministry of Finance. Data/details regarding offshore shell companies owned by Indian citizens is not available.”

Sharing both responses, Moitra tweeted: “Government identified 2,38,223 shell companies without any specific definition in law. Blinkers on only when it comes to Adani Group family shells in Mauritius!”

“How can the government take action against Adani? Finance Ministry does not know definition of shell firm! Written answer in RS says no clue, hence no action,” she tweeted, while sharing a picture of the proverbial “three wise monkeys” and tagging Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Kavitha, Mahua Moitra react after Bilkis Bano’s rapist share stage with BJP MP

    [ad_1]

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha, and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra expressed their opinions on Twitter after one of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano rape case shared a stage with a BJP MP and MLA at a government program on Saturday.

Shailesh Bhatt, a convict in the Bilkis Bano rape case, was present at the launch of a group water supply scheme, along with Dahod BJP MP Jasvantsinh Bhabhor and Limkheda MLA Sailesh Bhabhor.

Kavitha tweeted, “Bilkis Bano Rapist openly shares stage with BJP’s MPs and MLAs.
What have we become as a community that perpetrators of heinous crimes against women are being celebrated and given a platform while the victims plead for justice.
    India is watching!”

Mahua Moitra wants to see rapists back in jail

Similarly, Moitra wrote, “Bilkis Bano’s Rapist Shares Stage With Gujarat’s BJP MP, MLA.

I want to see these monsters back in jail and the key thrown away. And I want this satanic government that applauds this travesty of justice voted out. I want India to reclaim her moral compass.”

MLA Jasvantsinh Bhabhor shared the photographs from the event on social media. He wrote, “At Limkheda taluka of Dahod district, Kadana dam bulk pipeline-based Limkheda group water supply scheme under the estimated amount of 101.89 crore works was laid. In which 43 villages of Limkheda taluka, 18 villages of Singhwad taluka and 3 villages of Jhalod taluka will benefit from this scheme.”

SC to hear pleas against premature release of convicts

Today, the Supreme Court will hear pleas against the premature release of 11 convicts who gang-raped Bilkis Bano and murdered her family members during the 2002 Godhra riots.

The Gujarat government granted remission to these convicts on August 10 last year, and they walked free on August 15, 2022.

The case will be heard by a bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna on March 27.

In March 2002, Bilkis Bano and her family were attacked during the post-Godhra riots, and she was gang-raped and left to die with 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter.

  • TMC’s Moitra targets BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for ‘fake MBA’

TMC’s Moitra targets BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for ‘fake MBA’

    [ad_1]

TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Friday asked Lok Sabha MP Om Birla if lying on the election affidavit and faking an MBA degree along with getting a ‘dodgy Phd’ are grounds for termination of Lok Sabha membership.

She was targetting BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for seeking the termination of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s membership from Lok Sabha while deposing before a parliamentary panel for the former’s remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the discussion on the Adani-Hindenburg row.

“Oh just btw isn’t lying on affidavit & faking an MBA degree from DU’s FMS & then getting a dodgy PhD also grounds for termination of Lok Sabha membership? Privilege committee, are you listening @ombirlakota?” she tweeted.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in 2020 in the Jharkhand High Court alleging that BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had submitted a fake degree to the Election Commission of India in his election nomination papers.

The PIL, filed by one Danyaal Danish, sought directions for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a high-level enquiry by the ECI.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Friday sought termination of Rahul Gandhi’s membership from Lok Sabha while deposing before a parliamentary panel over his privilege notice against the Congress leader.

Following Gandhi’s speech in the first part of the Budget Session, in which he commented on the Hindenburg-Adani issue, Dubey moved the privilege notice against him on February 7.

Presenting his case before Lok Sabha’s privilege committee chaired by BJP MP Sunil Singh, Dubey said despite Gandhi’s remarks expunged by Lok Sabha Speaker, they are still available on his and Congress official YouTube channels.

“Not only one but three types of privilege apply to him, and he is habitual offender and therefore his membership should be terminated,” a source quoting Dubey said.

Dubey also presented documents and reports to substantiate his point that all allegations made by Gandhi are baseless.

He cited expulsion of Subramanian Swamy 1976 from Rajya Sabha to buttress his demand for Gandhi’s termination.

Dubey also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is Lok Sabha member and leader of House and without notice one cannot make allegations against him.

Mohua Moitra hits back at Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Trinamool-BJP’ comment

    [ad_1]

Shillong: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Thursday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for calling her party the BJP’s “B team”.

Talking to reporters her, she said: “The monopoly of national parties in the country’s politics has ended.”

She asserted that there would be no chance for democracy in India if Trinamool was forced to rely on a two-party system.

“The Trinamool has fought the CPI-M for the previous 34 years, and we won West Bengal for the third time in a row,” she said.

Moitra also took a pot-shot on the recent war of words between the state’s ruling National People’s Party and its former ally, the BJP.

“Today (Chief Minister) Conrad Sangma might say something negative about (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah, and the Union Minister may respond to this. But once the election is over, they will be brothers again,” she said, urging voters not to fall in the trap of NPP and BJP.

“Despite the NPP-BJP combine in the state, Meghalaya did not witness development in the last five years.”

According to Moitra, her Trinamool is there to provide a good alternative to the people of Meghalaya.

  • IOC contradicts Adani after TMC’s Mahua Moitra raises stink of corruption in LPG deal

IOC contradicts Adani after TMC’s Mahua Moitra raises stink of corruption in LPG deal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Thursday took to Twitter to clarify on its initial pact for hiring Adani Group’s port at Gangavaram in Andhra Pradesh for LPG imports in addition to existing pacts with nearby ports, saying there is no take-or-pay agreement.

The statement, which came in response to TMC’s Mahua Moitra raising a stink of a scam in hiring of the port facility without a tender, contradicted Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd’s earning call presentation that said “MoU signed with IOCL for a take-or-pay contract at Gangavaram Port for building LPG handling facilities.”

Moitra, reacting to the news based on the statement in the presentation, tweeted, “Brazen theft”.

Tagging Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and CVC on Wednesday evening, Moitra said, “No tender. No CVC norms. Moving business from Vizag Port to Gangavaram. Skimming from coal, skimming from gas, now skimming from ‘chula’ in every household. Shame!”.

IOC in an unusual move on Thursday sent out a series of tweets to clarify its position.

“IOC has just signed a non-binding MoU with APSEZL till now,” it said, adding that it floats no tenders for hiring of facilities at ports to import LPG — a commodity that India is short of production.

“There is no take-or-pay liability or any binding agreement, as of now,” it said.

A take-or-pay contract means that the state-owned firm will have to pay for using the terminal’s full 5 lakh tonnes capacity a year even if it ships less than the committed quantity.

IOC currently uses state-run Visakhapatnam or Vizag Port, located adjacent to Gangavaram port, to import some 7-8 lakh tonnes of LPG annually.

APSEZL, the ports unit of the Adani Group, had revealed the plan while announcing the company’s third quarter financial results on February 7.

Moitra’s party is among the opposition parties which have been demanding a probe into allegations a US short seller has levelled against the Adani Group.

Hindenburg Research on January 24 accused the Adani Group of accounting fraud and stock manipulation, allegations that the conglomerate has denied as “malicious”, “baseless” and a “calculated attack on India”.

Listed companies of the Adani Group lost over USD 125 billion in market value in the last three weeks. Stocks of most group firms were up on Thursday.

Replying to Moitra’s tweet, IOC said it imports LPG at various ports, including Kandla, Mundra, Pipavav, Dahej (in Gujarat), Mumbai and Mangalore (in Karnataka) on West Coast and Haldia (in West Bengal), Vizag (in Andhra Pradesh) and Ennore (in Tamil Nadu) on the East.

Two more import terminals are coming up at Kochi in Kerala and Paradip in Odisha. “These will be used in due course of time,” IOC said.

“IOC enters into agreements with various ports on a regular basis to enhance capability to supply LPG across India. For hiring of LPG terminals, OMCs evaluate the infrastructure for suitability for catering to the nearest market at a reasonable cost. No separate tender is invited,” it said.

    OMCs are Oil Marketing Companies.

“LPG demand in the country is on a constant increase. There are 31.5 cr connections after the Ujjwala Scheme; up from 14 cr earlier. OMCs are constantly on the lookout for new port facilities which make commercial sense in Logistics,” IOC said.

Providing detailing about the terminal hiring pacts on the east coast, the company said currently there are only two terminals near Vizag — one by South Asia LPG (a joint venture of France’s TotalEnergies and HPCL) and East India Petroleum Limited (a private company).

“SALPG charges Rs 1,050 and EIPL charges Rs 900 as charges with lower capacity vessel unloading capability,” IOC said.

“EIPL facility has no captive connectivity to be used on a continuous basis. IOC has just signed a non-binding MoU with APSEZ till now. APSEL has offered a price of Rs 1,050 for LPG import terminaling charges with facility of unloading of bigger vessels of refrigerated LPG directly,” it added.

The Gangavaram port would allow handling of bigger vessels.

“This gives an additional advantage compared to SALPG & EIPL as bigger vessels can be quickly unloaded. Such an arrangement will save freight & demurrage due to extra time for evacuation. There is no take-or-pay liability or any binding agreement, as of now,” IOC said.

While 0.7 million tonnes per annum of LPG is imported at Vizag port now, the new port is for handling 0.3 million tonnes.

“Vizag will continue to be utilised. Availability of multiple terminals will give operational flexibility, increase competition among terminal operators & an opportunity for competitive rates,” it added.

Mahua Moitra asks if IT action on BBC will be followed by one on ‘Mr A’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday asked if the “raids” on the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) offices would be followed by one on “Mr A” in an apparent dig at Adani Group chief Gautam Adani.

The Income Tax Department on Tuesday conducted a survey operation at the BBC’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion, officials said.

“Since agencies doing these Valentine Day ‘Surveys’ how about @IncomeTaxIndia, @SEBI_India & @dir_ed conduct one on govt’s most valued sweetheart Mr. A?,” she said in a tweet tagging SEBI and the Enforcement Directorate.

The surprise action comes weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary, “India: The Modi Question”.

The action, it is learnt, was initiated by the director general of the Income Tax Department in Mumbai across three premises.

“Reports of Income Tax raid at BBC’s Delhi office. Wow, really? How unexpected. Meanwhile farsaan seva for Adani when he drops in for a chat with Chairman @SEBI_India office,” the TMC MP said in another tweet.

US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research, in a report, has alleged financial irregularities and stock manipulation in shares of Adani Group companies and the opposition has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the issue. The Adani Group has dismissed the allegations as baseless.

Mahua Moitra to replace Raghuram in Roadies

    [ad_1]

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra stoked a controversy on Tuesday when she yet again used an abusive and unparliamentary word during the ‘Motion of Thanks’ on the president’s address.

After she used the abusive words, the chairperson of the parliament mentioned that none of her words would go on record as the House will not tolerate any harsh words used by its members.

However, the abusive behaviour of Mahua Moitra turned out to be blessing in disguise for her as MTV Roadies, a reality show popular for having abusive judges, invited Mahua Moitra as judge.

We have been searching for a popular person who’s also abusive, Mahua Moitra is a natural fit and the way she abuses matches with our existing judges Raghuram and Rajiv” said MTV Roadies director.

Mahua Moitra responded to the MTV Roadies invite with unparliamentary language. She said “Bhakk.. Har@mi.. maad₹&@, TMC..

This man topi-pehnau-ed this wonderful nation: Mahua Moitra on Adani in LS

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday launched a stinging attack on the government over the Adani-Hindenburg issue and said the billionaire businessman had ‘topi-pehnau-ed (duped)’ the country.

While participating in the debate on the ‘Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address’ in Lok Sabha, Moitra, without naming Adani, said that a famous person whose name starts with ‘A’ and ends with ‘I’ and is not Advani, who stinks of crony capitalism, had duped everyone.

Soon after she concluded her speech, there were angry exchanges between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP members. Moitra was heard using certain objectionable words to which the Chair objected and urged members to avoid cuss words.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi asked Moitra to apologise out of morality and said if she does not it would reflect on her culture.

Moitra brought two birthday caps in the House to press her argument that the businessman being most talked about had “topi-pehnau-ed” the government.

She demanded that an enquiry be ordered against the activities of the Adani group.

Beginning her address by quoting from President Droupadi Murmu’s address, Moitra said, “Every word I utter is going to be an oblation and offering a truth into my ‘maha yagna’ of nation building.”

“I want to start off by saying as an ex-investment banker, I want companies to thrive. But I want honest, hardworking Indian companies to strive and not trapeze artists. As an MP colleague of mine likes to say the Chair always asked me not to get angry. I will not be angry for what I have to say. I will only say that we’ve all been fooled,” she said.

Moitra also alleged that the businessman gives the impression that doing things for him means that one would be in the prime minister and home minister’s good books.

Referring to a statement by the Adani group in which it had said that short-seller Hindenburg’s report was a calculated attack on India, she said, “The pride of India is not the wealth of one individual, pride of India lies in the robustness of its institutional structures.”

She said a company which is in infrastructure makes five to 15 per cent returns if they are lucky and if they get everything right, but the multiple with which this company ‘A’ was trading was absolutely outrageous.

Even Google, Amazon and Microsoft don’t trade on such multiples, she said.

“Honourable home minister, he has topi-pehnau-ed you…he is getting security clearances from the ministry of home affairs…Madam, finance minister he has topi-pehnau-ed you,” the TMC leader said.

“This man has been allowed to use LIC, SBI to get money as and when he likes. Honourable civil aviation, he has ‘topi-pehnau-ed’, you shipping minister, he has topi-pehna-ed you petroleum minister, he has ‘topi-pehnau-ed’ oil PSUs…power minister he has topi-pehnau-ed you,” she said.

“India is on its way to becoming the third largest economy in the world. Don’t let him smear your time in government, with a stink of crony capitalism. Please immediately order a full complete and thorough investigation into all matters…Our country’s reputation is at risk,” Moitra said.

She also said the House too has historically seen some of the greatest debates, some friendly, some not so friendly sparring matches.

“But it is more and less a sacred place where elected representatives could speak their minds without fear of favour…Today and I say this with a heavy heart, Lok Sabha is a space which stands out more for what cannot be said in this hall, then what can we say. The list of unmentionables is actually far longer than the list of mentionables,” she claimed.

“We cannot say China, we cannot say Pegasus, we can not say BBC, we cannot say Morbi, we cannot say Rafael, and sometimes we cannot even say Modi ji…,” she said.

The opposition has been demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the allegations of fraud and manipulation made by the US-based short seller Hindenburg Research against billionaire Gautam Adani’s companies that triggered an unprecedented stock crash. The group has denied the charges.

The opposition parties have alleged that the meltdown in Adani Group shares is a ‘mega scam’ that involves common people’s money as public sector LIC and SBI have invested in them and have questioned the government on steps taken by it.

  • Wealth of one person does not represent India’s pride: Mahua Moitra at MBIFL

Wealth of one person does not represent India’s pride: Mahua Moitra at MBIFL

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: India’s pride should not be represented by the wealth of an individual and authorities like SEBI should make it clear what kind of role they play in the economic sector, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra said here on Saturday.

She was apparently referring to the Adani saga that has rocked the country’s stock market.

Speaking at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL 2023), the opposition MP said she has been raising concerns about the rise of some particular business houses from 2019 but SEBI failed to even provide a reply.

“When Hindenburg, the short seller from the US, asked SEBI why they have not replied to my questions, they said they were yet to reach a logical conclusion to provide answers. This was to my questions in 2019,” the West Bengal MP recalled.

Earlier addressing the issue of “Women in Power Politics”, she said it is unfortunate that a law was needed to ensure that women who make up 50 percent of the population get a proportional representation.

Pointing to gender inequality that exists in today’s world, she said that in politics, like in every other field, qualities that are seen as admirable in men are a disadvantage for women.

“If you are tough, know your mind, have a clarity of vision…You are called depressive. You are called bossy. But the same qualities in a man are qualities to be lauded,” she said, eliciting a round of applause from the audience with a sizable section of women.

Answering questions about her transition from the corporate world to politics, Moitra said it was a steep learning curve for her.

“All parameters that one holds as success are not applicable in politics and it is not a level playing field. A person who has achieved a lot in his or her professional career may think that it would help them. But those accolades mean nothing if a class ten dropout or someone with criminal cases against them are more capable in winning elections,” she added.
