SFI plans BBC’s Modi docu screening on Jamia campus at 6 pm, university says ‘will not allow’

New Delhi: Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Wednesday announced it will screen the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus at 6 pm.
The university administration, however, said no permission has been sought for the screening of the documentary and “we will not allow” it.
The SFI’s Jamia unit has issued a poster informing the documentary will be screened at 6 pm at the MCRC lawn gate no 8.
When contacted, a Jamia official said, “They did not ask for a permission for the screening and we will not allow the screening. If students go out of their way to do something then strict action would be taken against them.”
The screening at the Jamia campus comes a day after a similar screening was organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University during which students claimed that power and internet were suspended and stones were thrown at them.

Kolkata: SFI seeks permission to air BBC documentary on Modi at Presidency university

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of Presidency University in Kolkata has asked for permission from the university’s administration to show the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Gujarat riots in 2002 on January 27 at 4 pm.
This comes as several students gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union office in New Delhi on Tuesday for a screening of the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ claimed the varsity administration cut power and internet to stop the event, prompting them to stage a protest after stones were thrown at them.
The Fraternity Movement, a students’ group at the University of Hyderabad also held a special screening of the first episode of the documentary on Saturday.
The SFI at Presidency University said it has sent an email to university officials to reserve the badminton court on campus, where the documentary will be shown on a large screen. The university administration has yet to respond to the request.

The documentary which is aired only in the United Kingdom looks at the escalating tension between the Muslim community and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Hindu right-wing organisations – Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The first part of the two-part series, reportedly reveals ‘never-seen-before’ or ‘restricted’ documents in detail. These reports were never published to the public.
The summary of the report mentions statements such as “extend of violence much greater than reported”, “widespread and systematic rape of Muslim women”, “violence politically motivated”, “aim was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”, “their systematic of violence has all the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing”.

Speaking to the BBC, former foreign secretary, Jack Straw (2001-2006) said he was personally involved in the investigations as the data and results provided were alarming.
“I was very worried about it. I took a great deal of personal interest because India is an important country with whom we (the UK) have relations. And so, we had to handle it very carefully,” Straw told the BBC, adding, “What we did was establish an inquiry and have a team go to Gujarat and find out for themselves what had happened. And they produced a very thorough report.
What was India’s response?
The BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi was criticised harshly by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.
It was described as a ‘propaganda piece’ with bias intended to advance a specific ‘discredited’ narrative.
“The documentary is a reflection on the agency that has made it. We think it is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias, lack of objectivity, and continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible. Can’t dignify such a film,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

PM Modi presents chadar for offering at Ajmer Sharif Dargah

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented a ‘chadar’ for offering at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on the occasion of 811th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
“Presented the Chadar which shall be offered at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani along with the President of BJP’s Minority Morcha, Jamal Siddiqui, met Modi at his residence to receive the ‘chadar’.
A delegation under the leadership of Irani will offer the chadar at the Ajmer Sharif Dargha.
Speaking to IANS, Siddiqui said, “We are on our way to Ajmer Sharif taking the ‘chadar’ presented by the Prime Minister with the prayer for peace and prosperity in the country. He wishes India to become a global leader. His message is all about peace and botherhood.”
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, also known as Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz, was a Sufi saint of the Chisti order. He is known to be the direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad.
Born in Sistan (present-day Eastern Iran and Southern Afghanistan), he travelled all the way from Lahore to Delhi, and finally settled in Ajmer. His tomb in Ajmer, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, is one of the holiest Islamic shrines in the world.
Muslims from across the world visit the Dargah every year to offer their prayers. Not only Muslims, people belonging to different religions also visit the shrine throughout the year.

To commemorate the death anniversary of the beloved Sufi saint, the Urs festival is celebrated each year in Ajmer during the first six days of ‘Rajab’, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar.
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti is also known for establishing the Chisti order of Sufi mysticism in India in the early 13th century. He was the first saint to incorporate the use of music and hymns into prayers. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad once appeared in Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti’s dream and asked the saint to become his representative in India.

JNU admin ‘advises’ students against screening of BBC documentary on Modi

The Jawaharlal Nehru College (JNU) administration has ‘advised’ its student union to cancel the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The documentary, ‘India: the Modi Question’, was scheduled to be screened on the JNU campus on January 24 at 9 pm.
In a statement released the previous day, the JNU administration said that no prior permission was taken from the administration.
“The concerned students/individuals are firmly advice to cancel the proposed programme immediately failing which strict disciplinary action may be initiated as per the university rules,” the JNU administration statement said.
“This is to emphasise that such an unauthorised activity may disturb peace and harmony of the university campus,” the university said.
Reacting to the circular, the president of the JNU students’ union, Aishe Ghosh shared an old tweet of the Prime Minister from 2019.
“I think the JNU Administration missed the tweet by our PM tweeted some years back. Just reminding. We take his words quite seriously,” Aishe tweeted.

The BBC documentary throws thorough investigations and unreleased documents of the ill-fated 2002 Gujarat riots when Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state.

A similar incident took place in Hyderabad when a special screening took place at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), on January 21.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – lodged a complaint with the University administration over its screening following which a probe was initiated.

CPM youth wing says BBC documentary on PM Modi will be shown in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: DYFI, the youth wing of the ruling CPIM in Kerala, on Tuesday announced that the controversial BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” would be shown in the state.
The announcement, on its Facebook page, by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) comes in the wake of the Centre’s directions to block multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the documentary.
The two-part BBC documentary, which claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of that state, has been trashed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a “propaganda piece” that lacked objectivity and reflected a “colonial mindset”.
The directions on blocking access were understood to have been issued by Apurva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Friday using the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021.
The central government’s move has received sharp criticism from opposition parties like the Congress and the TMC for imposing “censorship”.
At the same time a group of 302 former judges, ex-bureaucrats and veterans slammed the BBC documentary as a “motivated charge sheet against our leader, a fellow Indian and a patriot” and a reflection of “dyed-in-the-wool negativity and unrelenting prejudice”.

DGPs meet: PM Modi calls for exchange of data across agencies

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised the importance of the National Data Governance Framework for smoothening the process of data exchange across agencies.
Addressing the all India DGPs conference on its last day, PM Modi called for greater cooperation between the state police and the Central agencies. The three-day conference started on January 20.
He further suggested making the police force more sensitive and training them in emerging technologies.
The Prime Minister suggested that “while we should further leverage technological solutions like biometrics, there is also a need to further strengthen traditional policing mechanisms like foot patrols, etc”.
He recommended repealing obsolete criminal laws and building standards for police organisations across states, and suggested prison reforms to improve jail management.
Modi further discussed strengthening the border as well as coastal security by organising frequent visits by officials.
He suggested replicating the model of the DGPs and IGs conference at the state and district levels for discussing emerging challenges and evolving best practices among their teams.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s emphasis on making Supreme Court judgments available in regional languages.
“At a recent function, the Hon’ble CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. He also suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters,” Modi wrote on Twitter and shared on the site the relevant clip of the CJI’s speech delivered at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in Mumbai.
The prime minister has in the past often pitched for making judicial verdicts more accessible to the common man by making those available in regional languages.
“India has several languages, which add to our cultural vibrancy. The central government is undertaking numerous efforts to encourage Indian languages including giving the option of studying subjects like engineering and medicine in one’s Matru Bhasha (mother tongue),” Modi said in another tweet.

Debt per Indian increased by 2.53 times in 9 years of Modi govt: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress alleged on Sunday that debt, unemployment and inequality have risen in the country under the Narendra Modi government and the debt on every Indian has increased by 2.53 times in the last nine years.
Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said the astronomical increase in the government’s debt due to “Modinomics” has crushed the common people as the debt per Indian has increased from Rs 43,124 to Rs 1,09,373 since 2014.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleged that the “friends” of Prime Minister Modi kept “picking pockets” as the media diverted public attention.
“How did the wealth of the prime minister’s ‘favourite friend’ increase by eight times during the pandemic? How did the wealth of the prime minister’s ‘favourite friend’ increase by 46 per cent in one year? “The media kept diverting the attention of the public, while the ‘friends’ of the prime minister kept picking pockets. The earnings of the poor were stolen by ‘friends’,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
Vallabh alleged that the economy has witnessed a K-shaped recovery under the BJP-led regime and asked why the debt per Indian saw a 2.53-time jump in the last nine years.
“From 1947 till March 31, 2014, the total debt of the Indian government increased to Rs 55.87 lakh crore. Why, in the last nine years, it grew to Rs 155.31 lakh crore, a jump of 2.77 times? “Why is the money borrowed just helping in a K-shaped recovery, with 50 per cent of the population owning three per cent of the country’s total wealth and ending up paying 64 per cent of the GST collected?” he asked at a press conference here.
“The Modi government is burying our future generations in debt. The debt per Indian increased from Rs 43,124 to Rs 1,09,373 in the last nine years. The debt per Indian has become 2.53 times higher than what it was in 2014, in the last nine years of the Modi government,” Vallabh alleged.
He said in absolute terms, the debt per Indian has increased by Rs 66,249 in the last nine years.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for 2022, India’s debt to GDP was 83 per cent, far above other emerging markets and developing economies that have an average debt of 64.5 per cent, the Congress leader said.
He cited figures of the outstanding internal and external debt and other liabilities of the Indian government.
Vallabh said according to the Oxfam report, the wealthiest five per cent in India own more than 60 per cent of the country’s wealth, while the bottom half of the population (50 per cent) together share just three per cent of the wealth.
On the other side, 64 per cent of the Rs 14.83 lakh crore collected in Goods and Services Tax (GST) came from the bottom 50 per cent of the population, with only three per cent of the amount coming from the top 10 per cent.
“The above borrowing is just helping in a K-shaped recovery, with some sectors doing well but not others. The (COVID-19) pandemic hit the middle-and-low-income groups and small and medium industries harder. As a result, the growth in consumption (Private Final Consumption Expenditure or PFCE) fell from 25.9 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) of financial year 2022-23 to 9.7 per cent in the second quarter (Q2).
To a question on the government blocking access to a BBC documentary on the 2002 Godhra riots, Vallabh said, “There is a scheme of the government of India called ‘Block in India’, like ‘Make in India’, ‘Startup India’. The government does not want difficult questions to be asked. If the BBC headquarters were in Delhi, the ED (Enforcement Directorate) might have been at their doorsteps by now.”

BBC documentary on Modi screened at UoH; ABVP files complaint

Hyderabad: Amid controversy over BBC’s documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his role in the Gujarat riots Fraternity Movement held a special screening of the first episode of the documentary on the campus of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), on Saturday.
On learning about the screening of the documentary, ABVP activists staged a protest and lodged a complaint with the University registrar and at the Gachibowli police station.
The release of the documentary has created a stir in the country with Twitter deleting posts on the same reportedly on directions of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting which also issued directions to block the first episode of the documentary.
‘India: The Modi Question‘ is a BBC documentary series, the first episode of which aired on Tuesday and was taken down from YouTube on Wednesday. On January 24, the second episode of the series is expected to air. The documentary series focuses on Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat’s chief minister.

Modi to flag off BJP’s campaign against BRS in run-up to Telangana polls

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking to raise the pitch against Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana in an election year with several Union Ministers and senior leaders making a beeline to the state.
The saffron party is planning a high-profile blitzkrieg to go on the offensive against BRS, the new name adopted recently by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to go pan-India.
Political analysts believe that the BJP is looking to continue the tempo built last year with a series of visits by party top guns and party programmes.
Though Assembly elections are scheduled towards the end of the year, the possibility of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao preponing the same is not ruled out and keeping this in view the BJP is galvanising itself into the poll mode.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lead from the front by addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad in February. He was scheduled to visit the state on January 19 but the visit was postponed.
The Prime Minister’s visit was finalised a couple of days after the BRS held inaugural meeting at Khammam, which was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and CPI general secretary D. Raja.
With Telangana Chief Minister KCR bracing for an active role in the national politics by portraying pan-India image and bringing non-BJP parties on a common platform to achieve the common goal of throwing out Modi government out of power in 2024, the BJP is apparently looking to mount pressure on him in his home turf.
As part of efforts to achieve its ambitious target of capturing power in Telangana, the BJP will be unleashing an aggressive blitz. In the next few days, several Union Ministers are scheduled to descend on Telangana.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to visit the state later this month. He may go to Komaram Bheem Asifabad district and visit Jodeghat where Gond leader Kumaram Bheem had laid down his life while fighting forces of Nizam, the ruler of then Hyderabad State.
Political analysts say the proposed visit of Shah will help BJP build a strong narrative against KCR-led government. The saffron party has been targeting him for not celebrating September 17 as Liberation Day due to its ‘appeasement politics’ and fear of his ally the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
“The BJP may look for more such opportunities to step up its attack on KCR in the run-up to the polls,” says an analyst.
BJP leaders have been slamming KCR for friendship with Owaisi’s party, implementation of four per cent reservation for Muslims and the proposal to enhance the quota to 12 per cent and second official language status to Urdu.
As the elections draw nearer, the saffron party is likely to intensify efforts to capitalise on sensitive issues for polarisation along religious lines.
The BJP in Telangana has been aggressive ever since it bagged four Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2019 and scored victories in two Assembly by-elections in 2020 and 2021 and significantly increased its tally in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Projecting itself as the only viable alternative to TRS (now BRS), the BJP leaders see a realistic chance of coming to power in the state in 2023.
The BJP has been raking up emotive issues which could help in garnering votes of the majority community, especially in constituencies in and around Hyderabad and other urban pockets of the state.
After Bandi Sanjay became the BJP state president in 2020, the party went into an overdrive to draw political mileage from sensitive issues. In what is seen as an attempt to challenge AIMIM on its home turf, he launched his state-wide Praja Sangram Yatra from Bhagyalaxmi temple abutting historic Charminar.
In fact this temple, whose legality was questioned several times in the past sparking communal tensions, has become the focal point of BJP’s politics over the last couple of years.
BJP launched its poll campaign in GHMC elections in 2020 from the same temple. It was also visited by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during GHMC polls and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in July during BJP’s national executive committee meeting here.
Bandi Sanjay, who is also a member of Lok Sabha from Karimnagar, allegedly delivered a hate speech in May. Police complaints were filed against him at various police stations in the state for making provocative remarks against mosques and madarsas.
The BJP leader demanded digging under all mosques. Alleging that Muslim rulers in Telangana demolished several temples and built mosques over them, demanded digging work at all mosques, saying there was a possibility of finding Shiva Lingams underneath.
The BJP MP also stated that if BJP comes to power in Telangana, it will abolish all madrasas, do away with reservation for Muslims, and remove Urdu as the second official language.
Family rule by KCR and alleged corruption are the other issues BJP leaders are likely to highlight during the campaign in the run-up to the polls.
BJP leaders are confident that the upcoming visits by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other top figures will help consolidate the gains the party claimed to have made last year with series of visits by the Central leaders and conduct of the BJP national executive meeting in Hyderabad.
