Siddaramaiah takes dig at Modi for keeping mum on BJP MLA’s role in bribery case

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding alleged involvement of a BJP MLA in a corruption case filed by Lokayukta, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Sunday asked him whether he has changed his ‘Na khaunga, Na khane dunga’ slogan to ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’.

While the Hindi phrase ‘Na khaunga, na khane dunga’ translates to — would not take bribes, nor let anyone do so; ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’ means — you take bribe and give me its share.

The former Karnataka chief minister’s dig at Modi, through a series of tweets, came on a day when the Prime Minister was visiting Mandya and Dharwad districts of the state. Assembly elections are due in the state by May.

“Mr.@narendramodi, Why are you silent despite Lokayukta exposing rampant corruption done by MLA Virupaksha (Madal Virupakshappa) & his son? Do you also have share in that corrupt money?” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

“Will a corrupt and shameless MLA of @BJP4Karnataka be able to go on a display march without the support of the supreme leader of BJP like you?, Mr. @narendramodi .Are all @BJP4India leaders shameless?” he asked, in another tweet, adding “Did you, Mr @narendramodi, change your Na Khaunga, Na Khane dunga slogan to ‘Thum Khao, Muje bhi Khilao’?”

Virupakshappa is an accused in a bribery case where his son, a government officer, was caught by the state Lokayukta police while collecting money allegedly on behalf of the legislator.

Siddaramaiah, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, also asked the Prime Minister stating: “…Can we assume that till the share of the corrupt money reaches you, all these shameless corrupt leaders of @BJP4Karnataka will remain safe & roam scot free?”

  • Modi slams Rahul Gandhi for remarks on democracy in poll-bound Karnataka

Modi slams Rahul Gandhi for remarks on democracy in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Dharwad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday targeted Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on democracy in the country at an international forum and said no power in the world can harm India’s democratic traditions.

Without naming Gandhi and referring to the Congress leader’s remarks made in London — that structures of Indian democracy are under “brutal attack”, Modi termed it an insult to 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, the people of Karnataka, India’s great traditions and its citizens.

The PM’s statement is being seen with political significance, as Basaveshwara is highly revered in Karnataka, especially by the dominant Lingayat community who form the major vote base of the ruling BJP.

Modi was on his sixth visit this year to Karnataka, where Assembly elections are due by May.

“I have come to the land of Bhagwan Basaveshwar and I’m feeling blessed. Among the contributions of Basaveshwara, most important is the establishment of Anubhava Mantapa, this democratic system is researched across the world, and there are several such things because of which we say India is not just the largest democracy, it is also the mother of democracy,” he said.

Addressing a large gathering after inaugurating the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad here, he said, he has had the good fortune of unveiling the statue of Basaveshwara in London a few years ago.

“Statue of lord Basaveshwar is in London, but it is unfortunate that in the same London questions were raised on India’s democracy; the roots of India’s democracy have been nurtured by centuries of our history. No power in this world can harm India’s democratic traditions. Despite this some are constantly making it stand in the dock,” Modi said in a veiled swipe at Gandhi.

Such people are insulting Bagawan Basaveshwara, the people of Karnataka, India’s great traditions, country’s 130 crore aware citizens, he further said, adding “people of Karnataka should be cautious about such people.”

Earlier, in a veiled attack on Gandhi over his recent remarks in the UK, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said when India’s dominance on global platforms is growing, some people are criticising the country on foreign land.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi among others were present at the Dharwad event.

Karnataka is the engine of “high tech India”, Modi said. “It is important this engine gets the power of double engine government.”

  • ‘Grandfather of hypocrisy’: Posters come up with PM Modi as Ravana in Hyderabad

‘Grandfather of hypocrisy’: Posters come up with PM Modi as Ravana in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: On the day of the ED probe into BRS MLC K Kavitha in Delhi, BRS has put up posters across Hyderabad with one of them depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the ten-headed Ravana from Hindu mythology.

The poster also described the Prime Minister as the ‘destroyer of democracy and ‘grandfather of hypocrisy’.

Along with this, posters mocking the BJP for its ‘raid’ detergent also were put up by members of the BRS in the city.

Posters, featuring leaders who joined BJP from others parties and BRS MLC K Kavitha on the other hand, were seen in Hyderabad.

According to sources, Kavitha will be made to sit face-to-face with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai, who was arrested in connection with the liquor policy case on Monday night.

The MLC termed the summons as “tactics of intimidation” by the Centre against the Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the BRS, adding that the party will continue to fight and expose the Centre’s failures and will raise its voice for a brighter and better future for India.

“I would also like the ruling party at the Centre to know that these tactics of intimidation against the fight and voice of our leader, CM KCR, and against the entire BRS party will not deter us. Under the leadership of KCR Garu, we will continue to fight to expose your failures and raise voice for a brighter and better future for India,” Kavitha said in a tweet.

On March 8, the BRS came down heavily on the Centre after the ED summoned Kavitha in connection with its ongoing probe in the Delhi excise policy case, saying that the central probe agencies have become an extended arm of the BJP.

Referring to the summons as “politically motivated”, BRS leader Ravula Sridhar Reddy had said that except ED and BJP, nobody really understands the case registered in connection with the new-withdrawn new Delhi excise policy.

In its investigation, ED has come to know that Pillai is one of the key persons in the entire scam involving payments of huge kickbacks and the formation of the biggest cartel of the South Group.

South Group comprises Telangana MLC Kavitha, Sarath Reddy (promoter of Aurobindo Group), Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (MP, Ongole), his son Raghav Magunta, and others. The South Group was being represented by Pillai, Abhishek Boinpalli and Butchi Babu, the federal agency investigation has revealed.

Pillai along with his associates was coordinating with various persons to execute the political understanding between the South Group and a leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Pillai has been an accomplice and was involved in the kickbacks from the South Group and the recoupment of the same from the businesses in Delhi, ED investigation reveals.

The ED had earlier said that the South Group gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders.

Pillai is learnt to be a partner of 32.5 per cent in Indo Spirits, which had got an L1 licence. Indo Spirits is a partnership firm of Arun Pillai (32.5 per cent), Prem Rahul (32.5 per cent) and Indospirit Distribution Limited (35 per cent), wherein Arun Pillai and Prem Rahul represented the benami investments of Kavitha and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and his son Raghava Magunta.

Kavitha, who is a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same case in December last year.

The excise policy was passed in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Cabinet in the middle of the deadly Delta Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

The Delhi government’s version is that the policy was formulated to ensure the generation of optimum revenue, eradicate the sale of spurious liquor or non-duty paid liquor in Delhi, besides improving user experience.

The CBI had filed a case against alleged corruption in the 2021-22 excise policy. The excise policy was subsequently withdrawn by the AAP government.

Sisodia was among 15 others booked in an FIR filed by the CBI. Excise officials, liquor company executives, dealers, some unknown public servants and private persons were booked in the case.

It was alleged that irregularities were committed including modifications in the Excise Policy and undue favours were extended to the license holders including waiver or reduction in licence fee, an extension of L-1 license without approval etc

  • BJP MPs called for Muslim boycott but Modi busy targetting KCR: Owaisi

BJP MPs called for Muslim boycott but Modi busy targetting KCR: Owaisi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday remarked that while MPs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have given calls for the economic boycott of Muslims, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is busy targetting Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and his family for his ‘leadership in Telangana’s inclusive development’.

Owaisi’s remarks towards the Prime Minister come on the same day as Kavitha’s probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for her role in the Delhi Liquour policy scam case.

“BJP MPs have called for economic boycott of Muslims; they’ve asked people to keep weapons at home. But Modi govt is busy targeting @TelanganaCMO & his family for his leadership in Telangana’s inclusive development,” he tweeted.

He was referring to BJP MP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma’s alleged remarks calling for a ‘total boycott’ of Muslims while speaking at a meeting organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in north-east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden in October 2022.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K. Kavitha on Saturday joined the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) probe in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy scam case.

She reached the ED office at around 11.05 a.m., and her statement will be recorded under section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

A woman deputy director level official will record her testimony.

Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, was summoned to join the probe on Thursday, but she wrote a letter seeking more time after which her questioning was postponed for Saturday.

On Friday, she staged a protest at Jantar Mantar and claimed that she had never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, adding that her name was unnecessaryily being dragged into the matter.

According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group which allegedly paid a kickback of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders.

The BRS leader might be confronted with the Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai who was arrested on Friday as the latter is also from the South Group.

“The South Group was represented by Abhishek Boinpally, Arun Pillai and Buchi Babu. Boinpalli facilitated the transfer of Rs 100 crore kickback in connivance and conspiracy with Nair and his associate Dinesh Arora. Now we will have to confront Pillai with Kavitha,” an ED source had said.

Sisodia is currently on ED’s remand.

There are possibilities that Kavitha might be confronted with Sisodia in connection with the alleged kickback.

  • Nirav Modi claims he has no funds to pay UK court fines

Nirav Modi claims he has no funds to pay UK court fines

    [ad_1]

London: Nirav Modi, the fugitive diamond merchant wanted in India to stand trial on fraud and money laundering charges, has claimed that he has no funds and is resorting to borrowing money to pay the court-ordered legal costs amounting to more than 150,000 pounds.

The 52-year-old former billionaire last year lost his legal battle in the highest UK court against being extradited to India in the estimated USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case. But his case is now said to be “statute barred”, indicating further pending litigation.

Meanwhile, Nirav remains behind bars at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London, from where he appeared via videolink for a hearing at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court in east London on Thursday over unpaid legal costs, or fines, of 150,247 pounds ordered by the High Court in London, related to his extradition appeal proceedings.

According to officials, the magistrates at a procedural hearing for court fines granted his plea to be allowed to pay 10,000 pounds a month before a review hearing to take place in six months’ time.

On being asked how he intended to finance the monthly amount, Nirav told the court he had been borrowing money as he did not have sufficient funds because his assets had been frozen in India over the extradition proceedings.

In December last year, a two-judge bench in the Royal Courts of Justice in London refused Nirav Modi’s application for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court on suicide risk grounds and also refused his application to certify a point of law, which concluded his extradition appeal options in the UK courts.

This case may be subject to further litigation, UK Home Office sources have said, which is likely to indicate a parallel confidential political asylum appeals process.

In a final extradition appeal hearing in the case in the London High Court in November 2022, Justices Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay ruled that they were “far from satisfied that Mr Modi’s mental condition and the risk of suicide are such that it would be either unjust or oppressive to extradite him”.

Their verdict also accepted that the government of India will treat its assurances on Nirav’s medical care after being extradited and held at Barrack 12 of Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai with “appropriate seriousness”.

The dismissal of the appeal came three years after Nirav Modi was arrested in March 2019 on an extradition warrant based on Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) charges against the businessman.

There are three sets of criminal proceedings against the diamantaire in India the CBI case of fraud on the PNB which caused losses equivalent to over 700 million pounds, the ED case relating to the alleged laundering of the proceeds of that fraud and a third set of criminal proceedings involving alleged interference with evidence and witnesses in the CBI proceedings.

Then UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, had ordered Nirav’s extradition based on Judge Sam Goozee’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruling in April 2021.

‘Attacks on temples’: PM Modi raises issue with Aus PM Anthony Albanese

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday raised with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese the issue of recent attacks on temples in Australia even as the two leaders focused on concluding an ambitious trade pact by this year and bolster security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific during their first summit talks.

The two sides inked four agreements providing for cooperation in areas of sports, innovation, audio-visual production and solar power following the talks between Modi and Albanese.

The discussions were focused on boosting cooperation in clean energy, trade and investment, defence and security, critical minerals, migration and mobility, supply chains, education, culture and sports.

In his media statement, Modi said it is a matter of regret that reports of attacks on temples have come regularly from Australia over the past few weeks and that it is natural that such news worries everyone in India.

“It is a matter of regret that reports of attacks on temples have come regularly from Australia over the past few weeks. It is natural that such news worries everyone in India, disturbs our mind,” Modi said in the presence of Albanese.

“I conveyed these feelings and concerns to Prime Minister Albanese and he has assured me that the safety of the Indian community is of special priority for him. Our teams will be in regular contact on this matter, and will cooperate as much as possible,” he said.

In his comments, Albanese said Modi and he agreed on concluding the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) as soon as possible.

“I am hopeful that we will be able to finalise it this year,” the Australian prime minister, who is on a three-day visit to India, said.

Last year, India and Australia finalised the Economic Cooperation Trade Agreement (ECTA) and it came into force in December last. The two sides are now working on the CECA.

Modi said the bilateral security cooperation is an important pillar of India-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.

“Today we discussed maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, and enhancing mutual defence and security cooperation,” he said.

It is understood that concerns over China’s increasing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific figured in the discussions.

“In the field of defence, we have made remarkable agreements in the last few years, including logistics support for each other’s militaries. There is also regular and useful exchange of information between our security agencies, and we discussed further strengthening this,” Modi said.

The prime minister also noted that mutual cooperation to develop reliable and strong global supply chains also figured in the discussions.

In his remarks, Albanese described his country’s relationship with India as “multi-faceted” and said he was looking forward to hosting Modi in Australia for the Quad leaders’ summit in May and then returning to India in September for the G20 summit.

“Prime Minister Modi and I discussed the strength of our economic relationship demonstrated by the entry into force of the landmark India Australia economic cooperation and trade agreement,” he said.

On the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement, he said this “transformational deal” will realise the full potential of the bilateral economic relationship.

“I am proud of the existing cooperation between Australia and India on solar and hydrogen, two technologies that are critical to our energy transition goals and the opportunities for us to work more closely to secure critical mineral supply chains,” Albanese said.

“I’m pleased that today we have exchanged terms of references for the Australia India Solar Task force,” he said.

The visiting leader said Modi and he discussed the increasingly uncertain global security environment and committed to strengthening the Australia India defence and security partnership to address shared challenges as well as to work towards an open, stable and prosperous Indo Pacific.

“I welcome increased defence information sharing between Australia and India, including in the maritime domain,” he said.

Albanese said Australia is honoured to be hosting the Malabar naval exercise this year.

“I am also pleased to report that officials have made significant progress on a new migration and mobility partnership arrangement. This arrangement will promote and support the mobility of students, graduates, academic researchers, business people and other professionals,” he said.

“I am pleased to have exchanged a revised sports memorandum of understanding today which will promote cooperation between our sport-loving nations, including recognising equality, diversity and inclusion in sports,” he said.
