Modern Technology To Be Used To Secure G-20 Venues: ADGP Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A high-level security meeting was held in Srinagar on Tuesday where the top officials of the security grid framed a joint strategy to ensure peaceful conduct of the upcoming G-20 event and to counter the possible fidayeen, drone, vehicle-borne IED, stand-off and grenade attacks.
The meeting evolved consensus that NSG will be used along with the Special Operation Group (SoG) of J&K police to counter drone, fidayeen, standoff, V-BIED (Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device ) any untoward incident while as Marrine commandos (MARCOS) will be given the responsibility of “lake and river domination.”
The security meeting was chaired by the ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar at Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar where officers of Police, intelligence agencies and security forces participated in the threadbare discussions regarding overall security arrangements to be adopted for safe and smooth conduct of upcoming G-20 being hosted at Srinagar.
“During the meeting, the ADGP Kashmir reviewed the security arrangements and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to ensure foolproof security for the summit. The officials also discussed the deployment of security personnel, traffic management, and crowd control measures to be adopted for the peaceful conduct of the summit,” the spokesman said.
As per the spokesman, the ADGP directed the officials to ensure that the security arrangements are put in place well before the summit, and the deployment of security personnel should be done in a manner that does not cause inconvenience to the local residents & tourists.
“The ADGP also emphasized the need to be vigilant and take measures to prevent any untoward incident during the summit. He further advised them that additional security measures should be placed at the vulnerable locations to avoid any untoward incident during the G20 summit,” the spokesman said.
He said that during the meeting, special focus was laid on the emerging threat of VBIEDs and other modes of potential terror attacks including potential fidayeen attacks, standoff fire & grenade attacks. “Counter measures to counter these terror threats were also discussed,” the spokesman said, adding that “ADGP Kashmir instructed all districts SSPs to focus on busting of terror modules by apprehending terrorist associates & generating preventive intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the valley.
Besides, all SSsP were instructed to conduct anti-terrorist operations on specific inputs. The officials discussed the deployment of additional security forces & use of modern technology to secure the venues.”

The police spokesman said that during the meeting, the ADGP also stressed the importance of river and lake domination in ensuring the security of the summit. “He also emphasized the need for the Marine Commandos (MARCOS) to be put in place to provide a strong security cover for the water bodies around the summit venues,” he said.
The spokesman said that the officials were also instructed to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies to gather information about any potential security threats and take necessary actions to neutralize them. (KNO)

Madrassa Plus project to impart modern education to ‘Huffaz’

Hyderabad: Imparting modern education to madrassa students is nothing new. The concept is now being sought to be implemented in a different way to make it more effective and popular. The Shaheen Group of Schools along with the Sahitiya Trust, Safa Baitul Maal and other organisations, have decided to educate 5000 ‘huffaz’ (Quran memorisers) in the modern subjects right at their madrassa. Billed as the ‘Madrassa Plus’ programme, it will be implemented in a mission mode method to ensure that the madrassa students are in a position to appear for the tenth class examination in just 18 months flat.
Beginning May 2, Madrassa Plus will be introduced for 100 students in 50 selected seminaries across the country. Through a bridge course, the students will be taught the basics of mathematics, science and English in the first three months. Thereafter they will be imparted government schools syllabus so that they could write the tenth exam in 18 months through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
Giving details of the programme, Dr. M.A. Qadeer (Shaheen Schools), Syed Aneesuddin (Sahatiya Trust), Prof. Amirullah Khan (Economist), Maulana Ghyas Rashadi (Safa Baitul Maal) told press persons here on Monday that 50 madrassa, mostly in UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and Assam, have been chosen for execution of the programme. Huffaz in the age group of 14 to 18 years will be coached in the modern subjects. In the coming years more madrassas would be brought under the ambit of Madrassa Plus, said Dr. Qadeer who has successfully tried the Hafiz Plus programme for the Shaheen group of schools.
For the madrassa students the whole thing will be free of cost. Food, accommodation and examination fee will be taken care of with the help of NGOs. The idea is to improve the economic status of madrassa students, who mostly remain unemployed or underemployed. “This project was actually visualised by eminent scholar, Maulana Abul Hasan Nadvi,” Maulana Rashadi said and denied that it would deprive madrassas and mosques of religious scholars.
Presently the madrassa system of education is under threat in parts of the country. The Madrassa Plus project is intended to protect the seminaries and also provide the students there best of education on all fronts of life, Prof. Amirullah Khan said.

Ecuadorian justice takes a Japanese company to trial for modern slavery

It’s historical. Ecuadorian justice has brought a company to trial for the first time for the crime of trafficking in persons for the purpose of labor exploitation: Furukawa Plantaciones CA, a Japanese firm that markets and exports abaca, a variety of banana used to make paper money in half the world. The judge in charge, Susana Sotomayor, also named Marcelo Almeida as the direct perpetrator and Hugo Chalen and Paúl Bolaños as co-perpetrators of the crime, to which is also added that of child and adolescent labor. Iván Segarra, former field administrator and Adrián Herrera, manager since 2019, the other two defendants are dismissed. Although both the Prosecutor’s Office and the private prosecution appealed this latest decision, they celebrate this first step in which they have been working for almost four years. “We believe that calling Furukawa to trial was very accurate and coherent given the more than one hundred elements collected by the Prosecutor’s Office,” explains Alejandra Zambrano, a lawyer who is a member of the case’s litigation team. “Above all, it seems fair to the victims, who have the right to demand accountability, sanctions, and reparation,” she added minutes after the hearing held this Monday.
“This is not another case. In no way,” said Sotomayor, who stressed that the victims had in common “vulnerability in their history and lack of job opportunities.” It is the first time in the history of the Andean country that a company and three senior officials will sit on the bench for practices of modern slavery. After basing the strength of the case on the intervention of at least eight State portfolios, the judge intoned the “mea culpa”: “I ask myself a question: What was the participation of public institutions before the start of the criminal process? Are they not the calls to guarantee the right to integrity of Ecuadorians? Aren’t these institutions the ones that have to guarantee the health of citizens? Aren’t these state institutions the ones that have to provide guarantees to citizens? What happened? What happened to these institutions?
These emphatic statements by the judge are also questioned in the other process currently open in the Constitutional Court, in which it is currently being debated whether or not the State is responsible. Patricia Carrión, a lawyer for the Ecumenical Commission on Human Rights, says that “they won half.” “They, the dismissed, are also part of those indicated by the victims of the case. The Japanese company had been in the spotlight since 2018, with a report from the Ombudsman’s Office, published in the first half of the following year, which reported a situation of servitude or modern slavery during the almost six decades of the company’s history. . The agency detailed “subhuman” housing conditions, child and adolescent labor and the absolute absence of labor rights from its own census of 1,244 people. That is why he urged ten State portfolios to put an end to the abuses. Air India to acquire modern fleet, orders 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing

New Delhi: Air India, part of the Tata Sons conglomerate, on Tuesday announced that it has signed letters of intent with Airbus and Boeing to acquire both widebody and single-aisle aircraft.
The order comprises 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777-9s widebody aircraft, as well as 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft. The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines, and the B777/787s by engines from GE Aerospace. All single-aisle aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a video call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, Campbell Wilson, CEO, Air India, and Guillaume Faury, CEO, Airbus, on the occasion of the launch of a partnership between Air India and Airbus.
The Prime Minister highlighted the rapid expansion and growth of the civil aviation market in India, which will give impetus to greater connectivity between India and the rest of the world, and will in turn encourage tourism and business in the country.
Complimenting the strong presence of French companies in India, Modi also recalled the recent decision by French aerospace engine manufacturer SAFRAN to set up its largest MRO facility in India to service aircraft engines for both Indian and international carriers.
Commenting on the occasion, Tata Sons Chairman Chandrasekaran said: “Air India is on a large transformation journey across safety, customer service, technology, engineering, network and human resources. Modern, efficient fleet is a fundamental component of this transformation. This order is an important step in realising Air India’s ambition, articulated in its Vihaan.AI transformation programme, to offer a world class proposition serving global travellers with an Indian heart.
“These new aircraft will modernise the airline’s fleet and onboard product, and dramatically expand its global network. The growth enabled by this order will also provide unparalleled career opportunities for Indian aviation professionals and catalyse accelerated development of the Indian aviation ecosystem.”
The first of the new aircraft will enter service in late 2023, with the bulk to arrive from mid-2025 onwards. In the interim, Air India has already started taking delivery of 11 leased B777 and 25 A320 aircraft to accelerate its fleet and network expansion.

“At long last, after many months of difficult negotiation, I’m delighted to finally share that Air India has signed letters of intent with Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GE Aerospace and CFM International for a fleet of brand-new aircraft,” said Air India CEO Campbell Wilson in a communication to the employees on Tuesday.
In addition to the 470 aircraft on firm order, Air India has secured a number of options and purchase rights.
“These give us the option, but not the obligation, to take additional aircraft at already-negotiated production slots and/or prices so that we can nimbly accommodate further growth and manage risk,” the CEO informed the employees.
The firm part of the order alone is not just the largest order ever made by an Indian airline, it is one of the largest single aircraft orders by any airline, anywhere, ever, and testifies to India’s unique combination of extraordinary scale and growth opportunity, Wilson said in the communication.
The acquisition of new aircraft, which will come with an entirely new cabin interior, complements Air India’s previously announced plan to refit its existing widebody B787 and B777 aircraft with new seats and inflight entertainment systems. The first of these refitted aircraft will enter service in mid-2024.
The Air India group currently comprises full-service Air India, as well as two low-cost subsidiaries — Air India Express and Air Asia India — which are in the process of merging.
Its parent, Tata Sons, recently announced its intention to merge Air India with full-service airline Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines in which the former holds 51 per cent share. In steady state, subject to regulatory approval, the group will comprise a single full-service airline, Air India, and a single low-cost airline, Air India Express.

Indian mission reaches out to students after modern slavery fears in UK

London: The Indian High Commission here on Friday appealed for students to contact the mission for help and counselling amid fears that over 50 of them may have become victims of modern slavery while working at care homes in North Wales.
The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), a UK government intelligence and investigative agency for labour exploitation, reported earlier this week that it had succeeded in getting a court order against five individuals for labour abuse.
The GLAA said it has identified “more than 50 Indian students as being potential victims of modern slavery and labour abuse over the last 14 months” in relation to the case.
“We were concerned to read this news. Indian students who have suffered this, please contact us at pol3.london@mea.gov.in, and we will provide help/counselling. We assure you of confidentiality in our response,” the High Commission tweeted.
Five people – Mathew Issac, 32, Jinu Cherian, 30, Eldhose Cherian, 25, Eldhose Kuriachan, 25, and Jacob Liju, 47 – are suspected of recruiting and exploiting vulnerable Indian students working in care homes across North Wales and have been handed a Slavery and Trafficking Risk Order (STRO).
All five, originally from Kerala, were arrested by GLAA between December 2021 and May 2022 and while investigations remain ongoing, there have been no criminal charges brought against them at this stage.
They are said to have links to care homes in Abergele, Pwllheli, Llandudno, and Colwyn Bay across the region, either by working there themselves or having a direct family link to someone who works in them.
GLAA said Issac and his wife Jinu Cherian also supplied workers through Alexa Care Solutions, a recruitment agency registered in May 2021.

Reports to the Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline three months later claimed that Indian workers employed by Alexa Care were not being paid correctly or were having their wages withheld.
Significant concerns were raised at the same time about the workers’ appearance and that they always appeared to be hungry, the agency revealed.
“We are all aware that staffing levels have been a cause of concern in the care sector for some time, and have not been helped by the COVID pandemic,” said GLAA Senior Investigating Officer Martin Plimmer.
“Unfortunately, where labour shortages exist, there is an increased risk of opportunists using the situation for their own financial gain, usually at the expense of workers that they are exploiting.
“Tackling the exploitation of workers in care homes is one of the GLAA’s top priorities, and this order is crucial in restricting the activities of those we suspect would otherwise commit slavery or trafficking offences,” he said.
The STRO comes with a series of stringent conditions on the accused, including preventing them from arranging work, transport or travel for anyone and allowing the GLAA access, at any reasonable time, to where they are living to establish and confirm that the order is being complied with.
Breaching the order is a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
“Through our investigations, we have concluded that such an order is proportionate to protect further workers from being potentially exploited and abused,” added Plimmer.
The GLAA said it had worked with Care Inspectorate Wales and other relevant local authorities over the course of the investigation.
Under UK and international law, modern slavery is seen as a serious crime where victims are exploited, controlled or held captive, and threatened or punished to stop them from escaping or reporting the crime.
According to British police, modern slavery includes human trafficking when victims are taken between countries or around a country so they can be exploited.

Journey of Vainu Bappu as father of modern astronomy is rooted in Hyderabad, reveals writer Dinesh Sharma

Hyderabad: With the concentration of scientific institutions, universities and academic bodies, private R&D companies and technology-based industries, Hyderabad is regarded as a leading science city in India. A multitude of factors led to the making of modern Hyderabad and the journey spans over a century.
“Hyderabad Kaiku?” was the subject of a talk by the New Delhi-based columnist and author Dr Dinesh C. Sharma at the India Science Festival (ISF) being held at Hyderabad Public School.
The very foundation of Hyderabad in 1591 symbolised the power of knowledge and science, Sharma said. “To think of building a magnificent structure like Charminar needed expertise in several fields – design, engineering, material science, chemistry, architecture, mathematics, metallurgy, town planning, mineralogy, water systems and of course, aesthetics, philosophy, religion and so on,” he said.
Elaborating on the modern era, Dr Sharma said a Nobel Prize-winning discovery was made on Hyderabad soil. The Indian Military Hospital where Ronald Ross discovered the science behind malaria transmission is located right in Begumpet. Also located in the same area was the Nizamiah Observatory which participated in the international project to map the sky in the early part of the twentieth century. “Few people know that it was in this observatory that a young boy got introduced to stars and went on to become the father of modern astronomy and astrophysics in India in later years. That was Vainu Bappu,” Sharma said.
When Hyderabad was integrated with the Union of India in 1948, there were just two scientific research institutions – Central Laboratories for Scientific and Industrial Research (CLSIR) which went on to become the Regional Research Laboratory (now Indian Institute of Chemical Technology); and the Hyderabad Science Society, besides Osmania University. These two institutions, according to Dr Sharma, played a pioneering role in developing an ecosystem for research in Hyderabad. It was at RRL that a popular drug molecule, diazepam, was ‘reverse engineered’ in 1972, paving the way for the foundation of the pharma industry, along with the public sector unit, IDPL.
Dr Sharma said the foundation of the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) was a watershed moment that seeded software and IT revolutions. “It created a pool of manpower in computer hardware, software, design, and applications. ECIL got software developed at various institutes which then got interested in software development. The Administrative Staff College of India had a large group for software development. People trained in ECIL joined private companies. Wipro’s first set of employees came from the R&D division of ECIL.” Yet another catalyst was the Computer Maintenance Corporation (CMC).
“Hyderabad’s S&T contributions have touched the lives of millions of Indians – affordable medicines, lifesaving vaccines, digital products. Hyderabad was the birthplace of e-governance in the 1980s even before the term was coined. Another invention from Hyderabad that strengthened our democracy is the electronic voting machine,” said Dr Sharma, who has been the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow. Highly trained manpower, robust institutions and favourable policies at various points in time have all come together to make Hyderabad a science city. The science and technology heritage of the city needs to be celebrated.
