Lokayukta forms special teams to arrest Karnataka BJP MLA in bribery case

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Lokayukta has formed seven teams headed by Deputy Superintendents to arrest BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, who is the prime accused in the bribery case.

Sources said that the teams have already begun tracking and search operations across the state.

The sources also said that the teams have launched a hunt in various locations of Bengaluru and Davangere cities. At the same time, they have also prepared to issue him a notice of inquiry to appear before the Lokayukta police.

The notice will be sent to accused BJP MLA’s residences in Bengaluru, Davanagere, legislatures’ house and office of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL). MLA Virupakshappa was the Chairman of KSDL and he resigned from the post following the trap incident.

The Lokayukta sleuths are also probing the source of more than Rs 6 crore cash found at the residence of Prashanth Madal and Rs 2 crore at the private office.

Prashanth Madal, the son of MLA Virupakshappa, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 40 lakh cash allegedly towards allotment of a tender for procuring raw materials for KSDL on behalf of his father. Prashanth Madal has been arrested and presently is in judicial custody. The authorities have seized Rs 8 crore from residences and offices later. The development is seen as a serious setback to the ruling BJP government.

We are descendants of Ram-Krishna: Rajasthan Congress MLA Shafia Zubair

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Congress MLA Shafia Zubair has said that people from Mev community, including herself, were “descendants of Rama-Krishna.”

“People from the Mev community reside in Alwar, Bharatpur, Nuh and some parts of Mathura, where Lord Krishna was born. I also got a little history traced from the people who wrote the genealogy to know what our history is. It came out that Mevs (people hailing from the Mewat region) are descendants of Ram and Krishna,” she said during a debate in the state assembly on grant of allocation to the Education Department yesterday.

“The blood does not change with change in religion. We have the blood of Ram and Krishna only,” the MLA from Alwar’s Ramgarh added.

While, Congress MLA Ameen Khan said that India is not a secular country.

“We do not consider this country as secular at all. Secularism came to an end on October 31, 1984 (when former PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated),” Khan said.

“We know Hinduism very well. A Hindu also protects another human being,” he added.

Reacting to the statements of Congress leaders, cabinet minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said that he was not present in the house during Ameen Khan’s speech.

“If Shafia Zubair has given a statement like this (descendants of Ram-Krishna) then she is absolutely right,” he added.

  • Delhi court discharges AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in rioting case

Delhi court discharges AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in rioting case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday discharged AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in a case of alleged rioting and stone pelting on police personnel in May 2022 while opposing a demolition drive being carried out by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Special Judge Vikas Dhull passed the directions on an appeal filed by Khan against a magisterial court’s order.

The metropolitan magisterial court had directed framing of charges against Khan and others under sections 147 (rioting), 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of his public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant).

The sessions court on Wednesday said the magisterial court’s order suffered from “grave illegality” and was not sustainable in the eyes of law.

The judge said that the magisterial court had placed heavy reliance upon the statement of witnesses, even though video recording was not supporting the allegations made by the witnesses, to come to a prima facie view that charge is required to be framed against the revisionist and other accused persons.

The judge said there were two views possible, one of which, based upon the statement of witnesses, raises a suspicion only that revisionist and other accused persons had committed the offence alleged by the witnesses.

However, the other view, which was made out from the video recording did not raise a grave suspicion that revisionist and other accused persons had committed the offence alleged by the witnesses in their respective statements, the judge noted.

“It is a settled principle of law that if two views are possible and one view raises a suspicion only, then accused needs to be discharged. In the light of above discussion, the impugned order suffers from grave illegality and is not sustainable in the eyes of law,” the judge said while discharging Khan.

The metropolitan magistrate had on January 20 ordered framing of charges against Khan and others.

According to police, Khan, who was the area MLA, along with his supporters, had formed unlawful assembly and pelted stones on Delhi police personnel, besides damaging public property while opposing a demolition drive being carried out by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation in Kalindi Kunj area on May 12, 2022.

Reasonable force had to be used at the spot to curtail the crowd, police said, adding that several police officials got injured in the stone pelting.

The unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had formally come into existence on May 22 last year. It was reunified by merging three civic bodies – North, South and East municipal corporations or NDMC, SDMC and EDMC.

Maha: FIR against Telangana MLA Raja Singh for ‘provocative’ speech in Latur

    [ad_1]

Latur: Police have registered a case against suspended BJP leader and Telangana MLA T Raja Singh for alleged hate speech in Maharashtra’s Latur city, an official said on Tuesday.

Singh has been accused of delivering an inflammatory address to create communal tension, at an event on February 19 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the official said.

Various organisations had urged the Latur superintendent of police to take action against Singh, warning of a protest if their demand was not met, said the official.

He said the Shivaji Nagar police station in the city on Monday booked Singh under Indian Penal Code sections, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language).

In August 2022, Singh was arrested in Telangana for his alleged remarks against Islam and Prophet Mohammed, prompting the BJP to suspend him from the party.

  • Hyderabad: Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh gets new bulletproof car

Hyderabad: Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh gets new bulletproof car

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The city police department replaced the BR (bulletproof) vehicle of Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh and provided him with a white coloured Fortuner bullet resistant vehicle on Monday. The vehicle was sent to his residence.

However, the MLA is out of town on some personal work and police department officials communicated to him about the decision to replace his old black car with a white coloured vehicle. BJP Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh, who is currently still under suspension, is reportedly also exploring all options including contesting as ondependent candidate from Amberpet constituency once held by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy.

Earlier, Raja Singh held a protest demanding his vehicle be replaced because it is developing snags. In early February, Raja Singh held a protest outside chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s official residence Pragathi Bhavan. The Goshamahal left his car there after one of the tyres came-off while he was commuting. The next day, he went to the Legislative Assembly on his motorcycle.

Raja Singh reportedly faces a security threat and has been provided with a BR vehicle and has also been extended with a 2 + 2 security cover. Raja Singh is also currently facing a gag order from the Telangana high court, which doesn’t allow him to hold rallies or public events in the state.

With state elections approaching in the next six months, Raja Singh has managed to circumvent the gag order by participating in Hindutva rallies outside the state. He has been doing the same from the last few weeks in Maharashtra. It has been learnt that the two-time Goshamahal MLA is reportedly exploring all options, including contesting as an independent candidate from Amberpet constituency that was earlier held by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy in Hyderabad.

BJP looking at other faces for Goshamahal?

Sources closer to the MLA said Raja Singh is quite confident of his win from Goshamahal or Amberpet seat in 2023 assembly elections. The Goshamahal constituency has six sitting BJP corporators and at least two of them are aspiring to get an MLA ticket from the party because already Raja Singh contested twice.

Raj Singh is currently out on bail after he was arrested for his derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad last year, which led to several protests. While quashing Singh’s detention in jail under the PD Act last year, the High Court, as part of its bail order, warned the BJP MLA was told not to make provocative speeches or speak in public.

So far, a case has already been registered against him in recent times for violating the court orders (with the Mangalhat police station). He was served another notice by the Hyderabad police on January 29 for a hate speech in Mumbai. Raja Singh is currently unable to carry out political campaigns or hold public rallies as he would have ideally done in the run-up to the polls. It is unsure how the state judiciary will react to him making speeches outside, with the logic that it is beyond the HC’s jurisdiction.

    BJP exploring other options?

On the other hand, sources also told Siasat.com that the BJP state leadership reportedly interacted some members of the Lodh Kshatriya community, which Raja Singh belongs to. Sources said at least two members of the community had evinced interest in contesting the elections this year from Goshamahal if the party gives them a ticket. Nevertheless, community elders however said they don’t want any conflict in the community over politics.

  • Telangana: Supreme Court hears pleas on BRS MLA poaching case

Telangana: Supreme Court hears pleas on BRS MLA poaching case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Supreme court bench comprising Justice BR Gavai, and Justice Aravind Kumar heard the BRS MLA Poaching case on Monday.

Senior advocate Dushyant Dave, representing the state government, requested the case be transferred back to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and asked for the Telangana High Court verdict to be struck down.

He told the bench that CBI is under BJP and that it should not investigate the issue.

Earlier this month, the apex court agreed to take up a plea filed by Telangana Police challenging the high court order which upheld the CBI probe into the alleged criminal conspiracy behind an attempt to poach BRS MLAs by the BJP.

A division bench of the High Court on February 6 upheld the earlier order of a single judge on December 26, 2022 transferring the case to CBI.

The plea argued that the high court did not appreciate that the CBI directly works under the Centre and is under the control of the office of the Prime Minister and the Home Ministry. The state government alleged the involvement of some top BJP leaders to poach its four MLAs, was an attempt to topple the government.

The plea said: “The Bharatiya Janata Party is in power in the Central Government and the allegations in the FIR are squarely and directly against the said party adopting illegal and criminal steps and methods to destabilise the Government of Telangana, the Hon’ble High Court therefore could not have entrusted the investigation to CBI in any case.”

“The High Court has unnecessarily drawn the conclusion that release of the CD by the Chief Minister on 03.11.2022 amounted to interference with the investigation and therefore concluded that investigation was not fair and violated the rights of accused for fair investigation,” it added.

  • Maha: BJP MLA ‘resurrects’ demand to rename Ahmednagar as ‘Ahilyanagar’

Maha: BJP MLA ‘resurrects’ demand to rename Ahmednagar as ‘Ahilyanagar’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A BJP MLA in Maharashtra has resurrected his demand to rename Ahmednagar as ‘Ahilyanagar’ – after the legendary warrior queen, ‘Punyashlok’ Ahilyadevi Holkar, here on Monday.

BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar raised the plea on grounds that Ahilyadevi Holkar (1725-1795) was born in Chaundi village in Ahmednagar district to a Marathi family, and later went onto become the queen of the Malwa state (from 1767 till her death).

Speaking to mediapersons, Padalkar expressed confidence that under Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ leadership, the decision would be taken soon.

Earlier in June 2022, Padalkar had written to then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray with a similar plea, even as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had wanted Ahmednagar to be rechristened as ‘Ambikanagar’.

The demand comes close on the heels of the recent renaming of Aurangabad as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and Osmanabad as ‘Dharashiv’.

Another a clamour to rename Pune as ‘Jijaunagar’ — in the memory of Jijamata, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — was raised last month by Nationalist Congress Party MLC, Amol Mitkari.

Incidentally, former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had authored a book titled ‘Matoshree’ on Ahilyadevi Holkar, the Indore airport has been named as ‘Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport’, two universities have been named after her in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra (Solapur), several roads, buildings, public places have been named in her memory, a statue of her stands in the Parliament complex, busts and statues have been put up in different parts of India, among others. She has also been immortalised in several films, documentaries and television serials.

  • BSP MLA murder case: Yogi, Akhilesh trade barbs on crime in UP

BSP MLA murder case: Yogi, Akhilesh trade barbs on crime in UP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed noisy scenes on Saturday as Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav sought to corner the state government over the killing of a prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA murder case, drawing a sharp retort from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Adityanath alleged that Samajwadi Party not only nurtured criminals, but also made them MLAs and MPs, and said his government will “decimate” (mitti me mila denge) the mafia.

Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, was shot dead outside his residence here, the police said.

Police on Saturday registered an FIR against several people, including former MP Atiq Ahmed. The mafia-turned-politician is currently lodged in a Gujarat jail. Atiq was a SP MP from Phulpur parliamentary constituency (in Prayagraj).

When the House assembled for the chief minister’s speech on the Governor’s address at 11 am, the SP and Yadav tried to corner the government over Pal’s killing.

The chief minister termed the Prayagraj incident “sad” and said the government has taken cognizance of it.

He said, “I would assure the House that the action which has been taken under the zero tolerance policy, its result will be out soon.”

Without taking any names, the UP chief minister said, “Who had nurtured the criminals and the mafia? The mafia whose name is emerging in the Prayagraj incident, is it not true that the Samajwadi Party had made him an MP.”

“He was a mafia nurtured by the SP. Our government is working to break its back. We will decimate (Mitti me mila denge) them,” Adityanath said.

Further attacking the Samajwadi Party, Adityanath said, “They are the mentors of criminals, and they have been doing it continuously. Crime flows in their veins. They have learnt nothing except crime. The entire state knows about this, and today they are giving justification.”

“The mafia leader who had perpetrated this act yesterday, is out of Uttar Pradesh, and became MLA and MP because of the assistance of the Samajwadi Party. Is it not true that in 1996, that mafia leader became a MLA from Allahabad West seat. In 2004, these people made him the Lok Sabha MP. Our government will finish them off, he said.

Referring to the address by UP Governor Anandiben Patel, Adityanath said, “People who could not give respect to a woman Governor in the House, how can they give respect to women?”

He also took a jibe at the SP while referring to SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav’s “boys commit mistakes” quote.

Haryana: Congress MLA demands high-level probe into charred bodies case

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Aftab Ahmed, Congress MLA from Haryana’s Nuh, on Tuesday demanded a high-level probe into alleged abduction and murder of two Muslim men from Rajasthan, even as he claimed the minorities are feeling “unsafe” in the state.

“I demand that a high-level probe be initiated into the Bhiwani incident. Negligence of policemen and other officials led to two youths losing their lives…action should be taken against erring personnel,” Ahmed said while speaking during Zero Hour in the state assembly here.

Nasir and Junaid, both residents of Ghatmeeka village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15 and their bodies were found in a charred car in Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani the next day. The family members of the deceased had named five men allegedly linked to the Bajrang Dal in their complaint to the police.

The Congress MLA said the accused are “gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) or connected with them whose track record stated to be criminal. It appears that state government is protecting them”.

“The incident in Bhiwani is horrendous… In Nuh district too, heinous incidents have taken place in the past,” he said, adding that “the minorities are feeling unsafe in Haryana today”.

“At other places too in Haryana, incidents against minorities have been on the increase in recent years on which action taken is not satisfactory,” he alleged.

He said Haryana is known for its brotherhood, “but today seeds of hatred are being sown in this land. And government is failing in checking these things”.

“The Minorities Commission was disbanded in 2015. I demand that it should be re-constituted so that problems and concerns relating to minorities can be addressed,” he said.

In its FIR lodged on February 16, the Rajasthan Police named five accused — Anil, Shrikant, Rinku Saini, Lokesh Singla and Monu Manesar — on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victims’ family. Later, four more suspects’ names were added to the FIR registered at Gopalgarh police station in Bharatpur.

Bhiwani Killings: Congress Haryana MLA blames state govt, police

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed on Sunday blamed the Haryana government and the state’s police for the alleged abduction and murder of two men whose charred bodies were found in the state’s Loharu area.

Ahmed visited Ghatmeeka village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district to meet the family members of Nasir and Junaid alias Juna, who were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on Wednesday. Their bodies were found inside a burnt car in Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani on Thursday morning.

Blaming the Haryana government, Ahmed said it should have taken action when the incident came to light.

Lives could have been saved if action was taken, he said.

“The Haryana government and the police are completely responsible for the incident. We will raise the issue in the Assembly.

“I appeal to the (Ashok) Gehlot government (in Rajasthan) to give strict punishment to those who let down humanity and hang them to give justice to the victims’ families,” Ahmed told reporters in Bharatpur.

Rinku Saini, who has been arrested by Rajasthan Police in connection with the alleged abduction and murder, has told investigators that the duo was taken to Haryana Police by cow vigilantes, an officer said on Saturday.

The police will verify the claim, the officer added.

The claim corroborates the statement of Mohammad Jabir, a relative of the victim, that the two were first taken to the Firozpur Jhirka police station in Haryana but police refused take their custody as their condition was serious.

Junaid had a criminal record of cattle smuggling and five cases were registered against him at different police stations, a Rajasthan Police officer said.

The last rites of the victims were conducted on Friday after authorities announced a financial aid of Rs 20.50 lakh to each of their families.

A Rajasthan court on Saturday sent Saini to police remand for five days in connection with the case while Haryana authorities moved to cancel the arms licence of Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar, who is among the four evading arrest.
