‘Anti-nationals’ are those misusing power to divide Indians: Sonia Gandhi

    [ad_1]

    New Delhi:
Launching a scathing attack on the government on B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday alleged that the regime in power is “misusing and subverting” the institutions of the Constitution, and the people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”.

Penning an article in The Telegraph on the 132nd birth anniversary of Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, Gandhi said today the real “anti-nationals” are those who are misusing their power to divide Indians against each other on the grounds of religion, language, caste and gender.

“As we honour Babasaheb’s legacy today, we must remember his prescient warning that the success of the Constitution depends on the conduct of the people entrusted with the duty to govern,” the Congress parliamentary party president said.

She alleged that today, the regime in power is misusing and subverting the institutions of the Constitution, and weakening its foundations of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice.\

Gandhi alleged that liberty is “threatened” by misusing the law to harass people rather than to protect their rights and equality is “assaulted” by “favoured treatment to chosen friends” in every sphere, even as the vast majority of Indians suffer economically.

“Fraternity is eroded by deliberately manufacturing an atmosphere of hatred and polarising Indians against each other. The resultant injustice is amplified by pressuring the judiciary through a sustained campaign,” Gandhi said.

At this junction in our nation’s history, people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”, she said.

“All Indians wherever they stand political parties, unions and associations, citizens in groups and as individuals must play their parts at this critical time. Dr. Ambedkar’s life and struggle teaches critical lessons which can serve as a guide,” the former Congress president said.

She said the first lesson is to vigorously debate and disagree, but ultimately work together for the nation’s interest.

The history of India’s freedom struggle is full of sharp disagreements among Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, and many others, she noted.

These debates naturally attract interest, as they offer many perspectives on serious questions about our future, she added.

“But we must not forget that ultimately, all the eminent men and women who fought for our freedom worked together for our independence and to shape our nation. Their ups and downs at different times only shows that they were fellow travellers on a common journey, and they were well aware of the fact,” Gandhi said.

Dr Ambedkar’s conduct as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s Drafting Committee exemplifies this principle, she asserted.

She said the second lesson to learn is to encourage a spirit of fraternity, the bedrock of the nation.

“Babasaheb believed deeply in the importance of nurturing a brotherhood of Indians as one people, saying ‘without fraternity, equality and liberty will be no deeper than coats of paint’,” she said.

In his final speech, he discussed how the caste system strikes at the roots of fraternity and called it “anti-national”, Gandhi recalled.

“This phrase is abused by those in power today, but Dr. Ambedkar explained its true meaning the caste system is ‘anti-national’ because it brings about separation, generates jealousy, antipathy in short, because it divides Indians against each other,” she said.

“Today, the real ‘anti-nationals’ are those who are misusing their power to divide Indians against each other on the grounds of religion, language, caste and gender. Thankfully, despite the regime’s efforts, the sense of fraternity runs deep in Indians,” Gandhi asserted.

She cited the example of crores of Indians from all walks of life protesting against religious divisiveness, raising their voices for livelihoods of farmers, and helping each other to their best abilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying those instances prove that sense of fraternity runs deep beyond doubt.

“We must always nurture this sense of brotherhood and defend it from attacks in our households, communities, and organisations,” she said.

The third lesson from Ambedkar is to always fight for social and economic justice, Gandhi said.

“Dr. Ambedkar fought for the rights of Dalits, as well as the rights of all individuals and communities who were marginalised. The system in the Constitution for backward classes and minorities is flexible and expansive, and has enabled progressive action for their welfare,” she noted.

“Today, the challenges of ensuring social justice have taken new forms. The economic reforms of 1991 introduced by the Congress government have increased prosperity, but we now see growing economic inequality,” Gandhi said.

“Reckless privatisation” of public sector units is narrowing the system of reservation which offered security and social mobility to Dalits, Adivasis and OBCs, she argued.

The advent of new technologies is threatening livelihoods but also creating opportunities to organise better, and ensure greater equality, she said.

“The challenge is to learn from Babasaheb Ambedkar and ensure social justice in these changing times, and act on our convictions in our public and private lives,” Gandhi said.

She also quoted Babasaheb Ambedkar’s last words in the Constituent Assembly “If we wish to preserve the Constitution… let us resolve not to be tardy in the recognition of the evils that lie across our path…nor to be weak in our initiative to remove them. That is the only way to serve the country. I know of no better.”

These words must be our resolve in the years to come, Gandhi added.

Ambedkar’s remarkable life remains an enduring inspiration today for all Indians, she said.

  • BJP MLA demands action against Azam Khan for allegedly misusing govt land

BJP MLA demands action against Azam Khan for allegedly misusing govt land

    [ad_1]

Difficulties for Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan do not seem to be abating. The demand for action has intensified on Darul Awam, the Samajwadi Party office of Azam Khan in Rampur. Allegations have surfaced that the place from where Samajwadi Party’s district office Darul Awam is being operated in Rampur is government land. In 2012, Azam Khan had taken it from the government on lease for 30 years for Rs. 100 per year to open the office of his Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. It has been alleged that Azam Khan is running the party office in the name of the trust.

BJP MLA Akash Saxena has complained about this to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alleging that Azam Khan has run the office of the Samajwadi Party at this place in violation of the terms of the lease. The demand of the BJP MLA is that the government should take over the land after canceling its lease. The district administration has also started an investigation into the complaint of the BJP MLA. According to the Rampur district administration, the matter is being investigated, and action will be taken based on evidence.

Azam Khan had taken this land on lease in 2012 as soon as Akhilesh Yadav’s SP came to power in Uttar Pradesh. Two leases were written, one for 25109 square feet area and the other for 16072 square feet area, with the rent for both fixed at only Rs. 100-100 per year. Both these leases were written between Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust Chairman Azam Khan (lessee) and the authorized officer (lessor) PN Tripathi, Deputy Secretary, Department of Secondary Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, on behalf of the Governor of UP.

This land was given to Azam Khan’s Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust to build a university and its office, but the BJP MLA alleges that Azam Khan is continuously conducting his party’s political activities from here and is using it for SP’s district office, which is a violation of rules. Therefore, the lease should be canceled, and action should be taken against Azam Khan for misusing government land.

Earlier, the office of Murtuja Higher Secondary School and District Basic Education Officer Rampur was established on this land. After taking this land on lease, Azam Khan has run his Rampur Public School in one part and SP office Darul Awam on the other part. However, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust had leased this land for the purpose of opening an office for building a university, which was taken. That’s why now BJP MLAs are demanding that the lease be canceled and the land be handed over to the government.

On the complaint of the BJP MLA, the district administration has started an investigation of this matter in Rampur. In this matter, Samajwadi Party leader Mashkoor Ali Munna says that all the work of Samajwadi Party is done from Azam Khan’s office Darul Awam in Rampur, and the meetings of the party are also held from there only. However, Azam Khan has not revealed whose land it is until now.

  • BJP, like Congress, will be over for misusing central agencies: Akhilesh

BJP, like Congress, will be over for misusing central agencies: Akhilesh

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday asserted that the BJP would be politically finished in the days to come, “just like the Congress”, for allegedly misusing central agencies against opposition parties.

Yadav also pressed for the caste census which, he said, would be a major issue in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“Earlier, the Congress used to misuse the central agencies, and now the BJP is doing the same. Congress is now finished. The BJP, too, will meet a similar fate. They are only sending agencies after those parties who are fighting the BJP,” he told a press conference here.

Asked whether the “misuse” of the central agencies will increase as the 2024 Lok Sabha election approaches, Yadav said, “It might be the case but it won’t help the saffron camp as preparations for the Lok Sabha polls would start in the next few months,”.

Speaking about the political resolution adopted in the two-day national executive held here from Saturday, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the party would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the BJP is defeated in UP and the country in the election next year.

“Uttar Pradesh is the only state which can stop the BJP as it has the largest number of seats. We will defeat the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The entire country is looking up to the Samajwadi Party. The BJP has told many lies, be it prices of diesel, petrol or LPG or price rise,” he said, adding that the saffron party is working for big corporate houses.

On Saturday, senior Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav said that the party has set a target of winning at least 50 of the total 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 elections.

Asked what would be the plans of the proposed opposition front ahead of the general elections, Yadav said it won’t be disclosed.

“The goal is to defeat the BJP. Presently efforts are on to forge an opposition front. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao are making efforts (on their own),” he said.

When asked whether the Congress would be kept out of such a proposed opposition front, Yadav said, “The Congress is a national party, so it has to decide its role,”

Speaking on the Delhi Police action against Rahul Gandhi, Yadav wondered whether the BJP did it to help the Congress.

“Nobody knows whom the BJP is trying to target. They might take action against someone, but their target might be someone else,” he said.

The Delhi Police on Sunday reached the residence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a notice issued to him over his “women are still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Yadav claimed that several political parties are keen on having a caste census in the country as it will help to reach out to various castes.

“Right now, the big issue is caste census. You can take along everyone only when you conduct a caste census. Social justice is never possible without a caste census. In 2014, the BJP’s slogan was Acche Din. In 2019, its slogan was Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas. So they must conduct it. All political parties from North to South favour the caste census. But the BJP is trying to avoid it,” he said.

He claimed that Congress during the UPA-2 regime had promised to conduct a caste census but later “backtracked” on it.

“Like the Congress, the saffron party is also not keen on conducting it. During the UPA rule, several leaders of various regional parties met then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The then Home Minister P Chidambaram assured them they would look into it. But nothing moved forward,” he said.

When asked whether the SP would contest elections outside Uttar Pradesh, Yadav replied in the affirmative.

“Wherever we have an organisation, we would contest the elections,” he said.

Akhilesh slams Centre for misusing central agencies, to meet Mamata this evening

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday slammed the BJP-led government at the Centre for misusing central agencies to “harass leaders and public representatives of opposition parties”, who pose a threat to the saffron camp.

Yadav, who is in the city to chair his party’s two-day national executive, is scheduled to meet West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday evening.

“The ED, CBI, and Income Tax are political weapons of the BJP. Here in Bengal, the instances are less. In Uttar Pradesh, several of our (SP) leaders, including MLAs, are in jail in false and fabricated cases,” he told reporters after reaching Kolkata airport.

“The BJP sends the ED and CBI to harass those opposition parties which threaten it,” he said.

Samajwadi Party is holding its two-day national executive in Kolkata from March 18 to discuss policies and strategies for the assembly election in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh later this year and the Lok Sabha poll in 2024, sources in SP said.

Yadav is also scheduled to address the workers meeting at Moulali Yuva Kendra this afternoon.
He will then go to Banerjee’s residence to meet her, the sources said.

The two leaders share a very cordial relationship.

Yadav had lent his party’s support to TMC during the 2021 Bengal assembly poll, which was reciprocated by Banerjee when she campaigned for the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister during the 2022 election in that state.

BJP aping Cong in misusing probe agencies, will meet Cong’s fate: Akhilesh

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said the Bharatiya Janata Party is following in the footsteps of the Congress in using probe agencies to carry out “political raids,” and will meet the same fate as the Congress.

He was replying to a reporter’s question about the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioning Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi and issuing summons to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

Central probe agencies like the CBI, ED and Income Tax were working at the BJP government’s behest, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister told reporters.

The Congress, when it was in power, used the ED, CBI and I-T department to conduct raids on several political leaders in the country, he said.

“The BJP is doing nothing new by following the same path. If Congress has been today razed to the ground, the BJP will meet the same fate,” Yadav further said.

The SP leader was here to attend a function in the family of former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh was “not on the path of truth, and bulldozer has replaced the path of non-violence,” Yadav said to another question.

  • Pak probe agency accuses Imran of misusing interim bail

Pak probe agency accuses Imran of misusing interim bail

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistans Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday accused PTI Chairman Imran Khan of “misusing” his interim bail to skip court hearings as it petitioned a banking court hearing his prohibited funding case to form a medical board to examine the former Prime Minister, media reports said.

The FIA had in October 2022 booked Khan and other PTI leaders in connection with their party allegedly receiving prohibited funding, Dawn reported.

The case was filed by the state through FIA’s Corporate Banking Circle in Islamabad.

Later, a special court in Islamabad had granted him an interim bail, in which he kept getting an extension on medical grounds, after he received bullet wounds in an assassination bid at a rally in Wazirabad on Nov 3 last year, Dawn reported.

In a fresh application filed with Islamabad’s banking court today, the FIA said a bail application filed by Imran was pending before the court.

“After getting an interim bail, the accused is misusing the concession and not appearing before this honourable court and in fact, he is not cooperating with the process of law and till date, neither he joined the investigation nor he is appearing before the court on one pretext or the other,” the agency said, Dawn reported.

It also said that a “stereotype medical certificate” was being presented from a cancer hospital, “although the petitioner alleges he has issues related to orthopedic”.

The FIA pointed out that the medical report presented by Khan was issued by a hospital which was owned by him, “thus the said reports are otherwise not credible”, Dawn reported.

The agency said, “The principles of fair play and justice requires that the accused is to be examined by the board of expert doctors on the subject from PIMS or polyclinic and if their reports can be entertained.”

“It is respectfully prayed that order of the constitution of a medical board and examination of accused may graciously be passed and said board may kindly be directed to submit report qua physical health or mobility of accused in the light of injuries claimed by him on his leg in the best interest of justice,” the FIA said in its prayer to the court.

  • LG should not stop teachers from going abroad by misusing powers: Sisodia

LG should not stop teachers from going abroad by misusing powers: Sisodia

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday said that Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena should not stop Delhi government school teachers from going to Finland on a training programme by unconstitutionally misusing the law.

Sisodia said that on the one side there is the government of Punjab which can send its teachers abroad for training but under the same constitution, there is the government of Delhi that wants to send its teachers abroad for training but the LG is stopping them from doing it. This is happening because he is misusing the powers given to him by the unconstitutionally amended GNCTD Act, alleged Sisodia.

“Because of the unconstitutional power given to the LG by the central government of BJP, the Delhi government is not able to send its teachers for training abroad. If the teachers have to be sent abroad for training, then the consent of the LG is not required, but due to the unconstitutional amendments made in GNCTD Act by the Central Government, the LG is stalling everything,” Sisodia told in a Press briefing.

Sisodia further said that to provide excellent education to the children of Punjab, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann had promised the people of Punjab that their children will get a quality education if AAP comes to power in the state. Simultaneously, learning from Delhi’s experience, the Punjab government has started sending teachers on international training in its very first year itself.

“But the file to send Delhi teachers to Finland for training has been in circulation since October. According to the constitution, the governments of all the states of the country have full right to work on education. The Delhi government should have as much freedom as the government of Punjab or any other state to send its teachers to foreign countries for training. But it is unfortunate that the LG in Delhi is misusing the law to stop teachers from getting global exposure,” Sosodia added.
