Punjab guv sends forensic report on minister’s ‘objectionable’ video to CM Mann

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Governor Banwarilal Purohit has forwarded a forensic report of an “objectionable” video of a Punjab minister to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, said official sources on Saturday.

According to the report, the video was not morphed, said the sources.

The governor had sent the video to the Chandigarh Director General of Police to check its authenticity after Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira submitted it to him.

On May 1, Khaira handed over the “highly objectionable video of gross misconduct” of the minister to the governor for forensic verification.

Khaira also demanded that the minister be dropped from the Cabinet if the video was found genuine.

However, Khaira did not name the minister while submitting the video to the governor.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday claimed that one of Mann government’s ministers had tendered his resignation as his “obscene video” had been submitted to the Punjab governor.

Chief Minister Mann, however, said he had not received any resignation nor any such video.

Jaishankar hosts reception for foreign ministers attending SCO meet

    [ad_1]

Benaulim: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday evening hosted a gala reception for the foreign ministers of Russia, China, Pakistan and other member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), marking the beginning of a two-day conclave of the grouping.

The main deliberations of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers will take place on Friday.

The reception at the sea-side Taj Exotica Resort in Benaulim was attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and Pakistan’s Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Uzbekistan’s Bakhtiyor Saidov and SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming.

    MS Education Academy

The foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were also among those who joined the reception.

This evening’s cultural performance was an amalgamation of Indian classical and folk dance forms along with Bollywood dance styles, as a glimpse of Hindi cinema.

There was a special segment where representatives of the SCO countries showcased their dance performances.

India is hosting SCO conclave amid the escalating confrontation between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine and concerns over China’s expansionist behaviour.

The overall situation in Afghanistan including apprehensions that the country may turn into a breeding ground for terrorism under the Taliban rule as well as the fast evolving regional security situation are expected to figure prominently during the deliberations on Friday.

India is emerging as a key player among the SCO countries though China and Russia are seen as the major drivers of the grouping that is increasingly seen as an “alternative” to NATO.

India is hosting the SCO conclave when its ties with China are under severe strain in view of the lingering border row in eastern Ladakh.

People familiar with the preparation of the conclave said the foreign ministers will deliberate on overall challenges facing the region in the backdrop of the current geo-political turmoil and the state of bilateral ties between the member nations would not impact the discussions.

The SCO is an influential economic and security bloc and has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations.

The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

India and Pakistan became its permanent members in 2017.

India was made an observer at the SCO in 2005 and has generally participated in the ministerial-level meetings of the grouping, which focus mainly on security and economic cooperation in the Eurasian region.

India has shown a keen interest in deepening its security-related cooperation with the SCO and its Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS), which specifically deals with issues relating to security and defence.

  • Andhra ministers slam Rajinikanth for praising Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra ministers slam Rajinikanth for praising Chandrababu Naidu

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh ministers and leaders of ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) have come down heavily on Tamil superstar Rajinikanth after the latter praised former chief minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Tourism minister R. K. Roja slammed Rajninkanth for the praise lavished on Naidu. Roja, a former actor, called the superstar’s comments ridiculous.

While addressing centenary celebrations of TDP founder and former chief minister N. T. Rama Rao at Vijayawada on Friday, Rajinikanth had heaped praise on Naidu for his vision and the progress achieved by Hyderabad when he was the chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh.

    MS Education Academy

Roja reminded Rajnikanth that Naidu was the chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh till 2004 and during the last 20 years, Hyderabad has seen development without Naidu.

Water Resources Minister Ambati Rambabu described Rajinikanth as a “coward”. He said the actor announced his entry into politics but later ran away. “Rajinikanth is not competent to speak about politics,” he said.

The minister recalled that Rajinikanth stood by Naidu even when the latter removed his father-in-law NTR from power.

YSRCP leader Kodali Nani remarked that Rajinikanth may be a hero in Tamil Nadu but he is a zero in Andhra Pradesh. “Do we need to hear from Rajinikanth about Chandrababu Naidu,” he asked.

Nani said the Tamil super star spoke a lot about the great qualities of NTR. “I want to ask him why he did not come to help NTR when he was attacked at Viceroy Hotel in Hyderabad,” he asked, referring to the Naidu-led revolt against NTR in 1995.

The YSRCP leader said that nobody is ready to believe what all Rajinikanth said about Naidu’s vision. He also remarked that the actor does shoots for films for three days and spends six days in hospital.

Calling Naidu a visionary, Rajinikanth has said that it was Naidu’s vision of developing Andhra Pradesh that would take the state to great heights in the country in the coming years.

The veteran actor said that Naidu is planning to develop Andhra Pradesh with a Vision 2047, and if that project gets implemented, Andhra will reach great heights in India. He prayed to the almighty to give Naidu the strength and power to implement it.

Rajinikanth claimed that Naidu had spoken about the Information Technology (IT) industry boom in the late 1990s when no one had even thought about it.

The actor said Naidu spoke about Vision 2020 in 1996 and how the IT industry would become a boom. Business tycoons like Bill Gates also appreciated Naidu and then set up their companies, he added.

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif will attend the SCO defence ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on Friday through virtual mode, according to an official readout.

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu are among those who are visiting India to attend the meeting.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the meeting that is expected to deliberate on regional security situation including developments in Afghanistan.

“Defence Ministers of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan will participate. India has invited Belarus and Iran, currently observers in SCO, to participate in the SCO defence ministers’ meeting,” the defence ministry said.

“Defence Minister of Pakistan would be participating virtually. The ministers will discuss matters related to regional peace and security, counter terrorism efforts within SCO and an effective multilateralism,” it said in a statement.

The ministry said Singh will be holding bilateral meetings with the participating defence ministers on April 27 and 28 where bilateral defence related issues and other matters of mutual interest will be discussed.

It said India has ancient civilizational, cultural and spiritual ties with the SCO member countries.

“India’s membership of SCO in 2017, was therefore, a reaffirmation of New Delhi’s keenness to deepen these historic ties.India considers SCO as an important regional group to promote multilateral, political, security, economic and people-to-people interactions in the region,” it said.

The ministry said India continues to bring more ideas and initiatives to strengthen cooperation among SCO countries.

“Under its Chairmanship, this year, India organised two defence related activities to enhance interoperability amongst SCO member states,” it said.

“The first being a workshop on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and the second was a seminar of SCO countries defence think-tanks on the issue of armed forces contributing to military medicine, healthcare and pandemics,” the ministry said.

SCO Defence Ministers Meeting: Rajnath likely to hold talks with Chinese counterpart

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India, as the Chair of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in 2023, will host the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting here on April 28, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to hold bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Gen Li Shangfu. Before the SCO meet, the 18th round of India-China Corps Commander level talks held on Sunday, but it failed to make headway on the contentious issue of the Depsang Plains and de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

The repeated attempts by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to violate the LAC, leading to tension in Ladakh, spurred the institution of the Corps Commander-level meetings.

    MS Education Academy

While the two sides agreed on mutual withdrawals from Pangong Tso, Gogra, and Hot Springs, the Depsang Plains and Demchok remain points of contention and tension.

Now all eyes are now on the visit of the Chinese Defence Minister.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), established in 2001, comprises Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan besides India. Apart from the member states, two observer countries – Belarus and Iran – will also be participating in the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting.

The Defence Ministers will discuss amongst other issues matters concerning regional peace and security, counter terrorism efforts within SCO and an effective multilateralism.

According to the Defence Ministry officials, the theme of India’s Chairmanship of SCO in 2023 is ‘SECURE-SCO’. India attaches special importance to SCO in promoting multilateral, political, security, economic and people-to-people interactions in the region. The ongoing engagement with SCO has helped India promote its relations with the countries in the region with which India has shared civilisational linkages, and is considered India’s extended neighbourhood.

SCO pursues its policy based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, non-interference in internal affairs, equality of all member states and mutual understanding and respect for opinions of each of them.

Rajnath Singh is likely to hold bilateral meetings with other Defence Ministers of participating countries on the sidelines of the meet, the officials added.

  • Indian ministers rebuke Der Spiegel for ‘racist’ cartoon mocking population size

Indian ministers rebuke Der Spiegel for ‘racist’ cartoon mocking population size

    [ad_1]

A cartoon in the German magazine Der Spiegel poking fun at India as it becomes more populous than China has been castigated as “racist” by Indian ministers.

The cartoon shows a rickety old Indian train packed with people and swarms of passengers atop it. On a parallel track, a sleek Chinese bullet train is seen with just two drivers, looking surprised at the sight of the Indian train.

According to United Nations projections published on Monday, India has a population of 1,425,775,850, surpassing China for the first time.

Kanchan Gupta, senior adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, tweeted: “Hi Germany, this is outrageously racist. Der Spiegel caricaturing India in this manner has no resemblance to reality. Purpose is to show India down and suck up to China.”

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the minister for electronics and information technology, also reacted angrily, tweeting: “Dear Cartoonist at @derspiegel… Notwithstanding your attempt at mocking India … it’s not smart to bet against India under PM @narendramodi ji…. In a few years India’s economy will be bigger than Germany’s.”

Some Indians pointed out that it was true that during busy festivals when millions of Indians rush to go home, some trains do look like the one in the cartoon.

Western criticism has always rankled Indian governments but under Narendra Modi, the resentment is much sharper.

Any negative coverage, such as the recent BBC documentary, India: The Modi Question, which examined the prime minister’s role in the 2002 anti-Muslim riots, is routinely dismissed as a malicious conspiracy to defame Modi and, by association, India.

In 2021, Modi himself made the same claim during an election rally in Assam, complaining that Indian tea and yoga were being maligned by foreigners.

“These days there are conspiracies against the nation. They are trying to malign the image of Indian tea worldwide. Some documents have revealed that such conspiracy is being hatched by forces sitting in a foreign land,” he said.

Last week, Baijayant Panda, an MP and spokesperson for the ruling Bharatiya Janata party, wrote a column in the Hindustan Times accusing the western media of outright prejudice against India.

Panda accused the media of ignoring India’s progress and, without naming it, singled out the New York Times for what he called its bias and routine India-bashing. He added: “What is peculiar is the abandonment of objectivity in the single-minded pursuit of a predetermined narrative.”

In 2014, the New York Times published a cartoon mocking India’s feat in putting a robotic probe into orbit around Mars. It showed an Indian farmer with a cow knocking at the door of a room marked Elite Space Club. After protests, the newspaper published an apology.
