The government’s plan to increase its control over the judiciary has sparked the largest protest movement in Israeli history and triggered a grave national crisis, including even warnings from the president of civil war.
On Saturday, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets as they
have every week since the start of the year — in many cases bringing parts of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to a standstill. It has also raised the hackles of Israel’s closest allies, testing its ties with the United States.
Police unleashed water cannons on masses of protesters who whistled and waved Israeli flags as they marched down Ayalon highway in Tel Aviv on Saturday night. “Shame! Shame!” they chanted in Hebrew. As the protesters advanced, officers on horseback violently rammed into the crowds. “Haven’t the Jewish people suffered enough?” read one protester’s sign.
The judicial proposal has drawn intensifying criticism from across Israeli society — including from former prime ministers and defense officials, high-tech business leaders, Israel’s attorney general and American Jews.
In recent weeks, discontent over the overhaul has even surged from within Israel’s army — the country’s most popular and respected institution, which has historically been an apolitical unifier. A growing number of Israeli reservists have threatened to withdraw from voluntary duty in the past weeks, posing a broad challenge to Netanyahu as he defiantly plows ahead with the judicial changes while on trial for corruption.
“The events taking place in Israeli society do not spare the Israel Defense Forces — from all sides, feelings of anger, pain and disappointment arise, with an intensity I have never encountered before,” Gallant said. “I see how the source of our strength is being eroded.”
In security-minded Israel, the unrest has prompted concern about the Israeli military’s stability as it maintains its 55-year-old occupation of the West Bank and faces threats from Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group and from its archenemy Iran.
Violence both in Israel and the occupied West Bank has escalated over the past few weeks to heights unseen in years. On Saturday, a Palestinian shot and wounded two Israeli soldiers in the northern West Bank town of Hawara, the site of a violent settler rampage last month.
“This is a clear, immediate and tangible danger to the security of the state,” he said, referring to the judicial plans. “I will not take part in this.”
Gallant stopped short of saying what, if anything, he would do if Netanyahu ignored his plea. But his strong statement of concern for the polarized nation marked the first crack in Netanyahu’s coalition, the most right-wing and religiously conservative government in Israeli history.
Despite mounting dissent, the government passed a key part of the overhaul on Thursday, approving legislation that would protect the Israeli leader from being deemed unfit to rule because of his trial and claims of a conflict of interest. Critics say the law is tailor-made for Netanyahu and encourages corruption.
That day, Gallant met with Netanyahu, reportedly to voice concerns that protests by Israeli reservists and other security forces were hurting Israel’s international image and power of deterrence. After the meeting, Netanyahu nonetheless announced that he would become directly involved in the overhaul, declaring his hands “untied.”
Israel’s attorney general issued a sharp rebuke on Friday, warning that Netanyahu had broken the law by announcing his direct involvement in the overhaul while facing criminal charges — a stern statement that raised the specter of a constitutional crisis.
Netanyahu is on trial for fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of scandals involving wealthy associates and powerful media moguls. He denies wrongdoing and dismisses critics who say he could find an escape route from the charges through the legal overhaul his government is advancing.
Supporters of the judicial overhaul — which includes plans to increase the coalition’s control over judicial appointments and diminish the Supreme Court’s ability to strike down laws passed by Parliament — say it will restore power to elected legislators and make the courts less interventionist. Critics say the move upends Israel’s system of checks and balances and pushes it toward autocracy.
In spite of the backlash, Netanyahu has dismissed offers for a compromise, including from Israel’s mainly ceremonial president earlier this month.
“For the sake of our security, for the sake of our unity, it is our duty to return to the arena of dialogue,” Gallant said.

Noida: Uttar Pradesh minister Asim Arun on Saturday said the rule of law applies to everyone whether it is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, SP’s Azam Khan or a BJP politician.
Responding to an allegation by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who has said that the BJP was trying to lodge false cases against opposition leaders and get them disqualified, the social welfare minister said a member of the ruling BJP had to lose his membership of the UP Assembly last year after his conviction.
Vikram Saini, a two-term MLA from Khatauli, was disqualified as a legislator in 2022 after he was sentenced to two years in prison by a court in a case related to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
“He had a criminal case against him and he got convicted in it. His seat fell vacant and bye-election was held on it,” Arun said.
The BJP fielded his wife in the bye-election but the RLD candidate won from there.
“The crucial element here is we all know what Rahul Gandhi said. Do you feel it amounts to defamation? I feel yes, it does. You read the lawbook and according to Section 499 (of the IPC), it is clearly defamation,” Arun said.
“Second, the speed of justice. The case was lodged in 2019 and it’s almost four years and the speed should be even greater, particularly for MP/MLA courts because they were made to ensure speedy legal proceedings in such cases,” the former IPS officer said during a visit to the National Capital Region.
Whether it is Azam Khan or his son Abdullah, every case has gone through a robust legal process, he said.
“Now Rahul Gandhi or other politicians who have been convicted have legal recourse and I am sure they must have taken that route. Either their conviction may not have got commuted or the sentence stayed because of which they have been disqualified. This is fundamentally about the rule of law, which must apply to everyone including politicians, which is happening,” the minister said.
Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail after a Surat court convicted him in a 2019 criminal defamation case on Thursday. The next day, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification disqualifying him as an MP.

Bengaluru: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday security in the ocean needs to be strengthened as most of the narcotic drugs are shipped in Pakistan and go via Iran to Sri Lanka and Africa.
He stressed that drug control was not just the Centre’s fight but of the states, societies and citizens.
“At least 60-70 per cent of drug smuggling happens through the sea route,” he said addressing the regional conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ for southern states and Union Territories.
“We need to have a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach sparing none who are involved in drug trafficking.”
He highlighted the need to investigate the chain of networks down below when a big fry was caught.
“When we catch a big fry, we need to investigate the entire chain of networks down below. When we catch a drug addict, we need to investigate those who supplied them”, he said.
“If drug addiction is not controlled, it will become an incurable ulcer in the body”.
“We have set a goal of a drug-free India. We have the target of (becoming) a developed nation by 2047 and a five trillion (USD) economy in 2025. Drug-free society is the foundation to achieve these goals. All the governments should join hands. We have to make the eradication of drug menace a people’s fight,” Shah said.
Shah urged all the government departments such as revenue, social welfare, education and culture should join hands with the health department in the drive against drugs. Drug detection, network destruction, culprit detention and addict rehabilitation are the four pillars of the fight against narcotics.
“I am sorry to say that the detention of culprits is taken very lightly. We are not being stern against them. We should not take drug cases in isolation. We have to deal with it sensitively. You have to fight collectively through detection of drugs, destruction of networks, detention of culprits and rehabilitation of those addicted.”
According to Shah, there are strong provisions in the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, which are not being implemented effectively.
“Please review it and find out how many properties of drug dealers have been confiscated, and how many of them have been jailed using these laws,” he suggested.
He reminded the officers that the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has adopted a zero tolerance policy against drugs to make India drug-free country.
He further said that under the platinum jubilee of the Indian independence, it was decided that during the 75-day campaign starting from June 1, 2022, 75,000 kg of narcotics will be destroyed.
A total of 5,94,620 kg of narcotics worth Rs 8,409 crore has been destroyed so far, over achieving the target manifold, Shah said.
The Union Minister noted that his ministry has adopted a three-pronged approach to crackdown on narcotics, which includes strengthening institutional structures, empowerment of all agencies related to control of narcotics and launching an awareness campaign.
Shah told the gathering that a total of 1,257 cases were registered between 2006 and 2013, which increased by 152 percent to 3,172 between 2014 and 2022, while, the total number of arrests during the same period increased by 260 percent to 4,888 from 1,362.
Similarly, during 2006-2013, 1.52 lakh kg of drugs were seized, which doubled to 3.30 lakh kg during 2014-22. Drugs valued at Rs 768 crore were seized during 2006-2013, which rose by 25 times to Rs 20,000 crore during 2014-2022.
During the event, 9,298 kg of seized narcotics worth Rs 1,235 crore were destroyed.
Apart from this, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Rashtriya Raksha University and the Government of Karnataka to open a new campus of the University at Shivamogga.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Thursday that while utmost caution has to be exercised in the wake of rising Covid cases in the state, the saving grace is there aren’t any Covid clusters in Kerala at present.
George told the media that at the moment, what is required is exercising caution, adding that all the arrangements are in place with regard to facilities required in case the need arises.
“There are no Covid clusters in Kerala, but increasing number of cases is being reported. Facilities are being assessed and wherever required, they will be augmented,” George said.
Ever since a spike in the number of Covid cases was reported, especially in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts, George has been pressing for the use of masks in public places.
At present, Kerala has over 1,100 active Covid cases, with an average daily new case tally of more than 100.

Bhubaneswar: The charge sheet in the murder of minister Naba Kishore Das will be filed within prescribed time frame, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told the Odisha Assembly on Tuesday.
Replying to the discussion on demand of grants for the Home and General Administration Departments, he said: “The investigation is still under progress and within the time frame given by law for filing of charge sheet, the same would be done.”
Noting that except himself, no police officer or any other authority has made any statement or briefed anyone including the media on the sensitive murder case so far, he asked: “Where did the opposition find this point about the government saying that the accused person is mad or the government trying to show that the accused person is mad?”
Alleging the opposition is lying for narrow political gains, Patnaik said his government has always stood for justice.
“In this particular case, we have two objectives. Unveil the truth behind this murder and to ensure conviction of those involved,” he said.
Patnaik further said the police followed all scientific procedures involving professional agencies, including those from other states and the Central government for investigation of the case.
He said that the entire investigation is being monitored by a retired High Court judge appointed by the Orissa High Court itself, but even then, the opposition is accusing the government of hiding something in the investigation. This is deplorable and smacks of political opportunism, he said.
“I assure the people of my state that in all the sensational cases alleged by the opposition, justice will be done and the culprits will be convicted and when that happens people will judge the narrow political mindset of the opposition,” Patnaik said.
On the allegation made by the opposition that the law and order situation in the state is precarious, Patnaik said: “Getting investment to a state is a reflection of the law and order situation in the state. No investment comes when the law and order situation is poor in a state. Odisha gets one of the highest investments in the country.”
Similarly, good growth in industrial production and agriculture production, transport and major logistical movements is also an indicator of law and order situation, he added.
“Our railways make one of the highest profits in the country and there is absolutely no problem in the transport situation in the state,” Patnaik pointed out.
Besides, the state has not faced any dislocation in conduct of major events like the Hockey World Cup, Ratha Yatra, elections and examinations because of law and order situation, he said.
Specific issues like communal harmony, left-wing, extremism or labour related issues – Odisha has been the best in handling all these issues, he added.
Stating growth and revenue generation are directly proportional to the law and order situation of the state, Patnaik said: “We record highest growth rates on a continuous basis and our revenue generation is increasing year after year. So, when the opposition talks about lawlessness they should keep these facts in mind.”
