Former law minister Shanti Bhushan dies aged 97

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Union law minister and eminent jurist Shanti Bhushan, who represented politician Raj Narain in the historic case that led to the annulment of then prime minister Indira Gandhi’s election in 1975, died here on Tuesday following a brief illness. He was 97.

A source close to his family said Bhushan was not keeping well for some time and died at his home in Delhi.

In the historic Raj Narain vs Indira Nehru Gandhi case, the Allahabad High Court in its verdict in June 1975 had disqualified Gandhi for a period of six years from contesting elections.

The plea was filed by freedom fighter and politician Raj Narain, who had unsuccessfully contested the 1971 Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh against her, accusing her of corrupt electoral practices.

Gandhi had moved the Supreme Court against the high court verdict. It triggered a series of events culminating into the imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975.

Bhushan, who was also a senior advocate, served as the law minister from 1977 to 1979 in the Morarji Desai cabinet.

Bhushan, whose sons Jayant and Prashant Bhushan are leading lawyers, was active in the legal profession till recently and had argued on a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored probe into the Rafale fighter jets deal.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said he was deeply pained by the news of Bhushan’s passing away. “My deepest condolences to the family members on his passing away. My prayers for the departed soul. Om Shanti,” he wrote on Twitter.

Shanti Bhushan had also filed a plea in the apex court challenging the roster practice of allocation of cases by the Chief Justice of India.

In its verdict on his plea, the top court had in July 2018 maintained that the Chief Justice of India is “the master of the roster” and has the prerogative and authority to allocate cases to different benches of the apex court.

In November 2010, Shanti Bhushan had stuck to his sensational allegation that there was corruption in the judiciary and had refused to apologise to the Supreme Court asserting he was willing to be jailed for contempt.

He had made the remarks when the apex court had asked whether he and his son Prashant were willing to tender an apology to avoid being hauled up for contempt.

In his political career, he was a member of the Congress (O) and later of the Janata Party. He served as a Rajya Sabha member too. He also had a six-year stint with the BJP.

He was vocal on the issue of corruption, and was among the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party, which he later quit.

Take hard line against upper castes: Bihar Minister in puported video

    [ad_1]

Patna: In a purported video of a phone conversation, Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekher Yadav, who recently made controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas, was heard telling his supporters to take a hard line against the “upper castes”.

A purported video of RJD national vice president Uday Narayan Chaudhary speaking to Yadav over phone went viral on social media, where Yadav was heard telling his supporters to target “upper castes but not the entire Hindu community”.

The video was reportedly captured when Chaudhary was in Simultala block of Bihar’s Jamui Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday. The farmers of Simultala have donated their land for construction of a school, and they urged Chaudhary to invite the state Education Minister there. After which, Chaudhary called Yadav over phone with his mobile speaker on, and the video of entire conversation was recorded by someone.

Yadav, during the conversation, was heard citing an example of “Mata Sabri” and “Nishadh Raj”. He also said that pick Ramcharitmanas or any other holy book and highlight points where people of upper caste were dominating. Yadav suggested his supporters to “avoid saying anything against Ram as it would turn outrageous, and Hindu people may get angry on it.”

The minister had earlier claimed that Ramcharitmanas, Manusmriti, and Bunch of Thoughts “spread hatred in society”.

His remarks stoked a huge nationwide controversy.

  • Odisha Minister assassination: Oppn questions ‘silence’ of CM, DGP

Odisha Minister assassination: Oppn questions ‘silence’ of CM, DGP

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Condemning the murder of Odisha Health minister Naba Das by a cop, Opposition BJP and Congress questioned the “silence” of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and DGP Sunil Bansal on issue.

Rejecting the crime branch probe ordered by the Chief Minister, the BJP demanded a CBI probe in the matter while the Congress demanded a SIT probe under the supervision of Orissa High Court.

Speaking to media persons, Odisha BJP president Samir Mohanty said, “Minister Das was not just a politician, he was an influential and powerful cabinet minister in the state. If such a personality is killed in broad daylight, one can easily assume the condition of a common man in the state.”

“It is unfortunate that Naveen Babu, who has been in charge of the Home department for the last 23 years, has remained silent on the sensitive issue,” he added.

Though a cabinet minister was killed, the DGP and the Home secretary neither visited the spot in Jharsuguda nor spoke a word on the heinous murder, the state BJP president said.

He asserted that people will not accept it that the state police is investigating the case in which a cop has killed the minister. “By ordering a crime branch investigation, the state government has already decided what to do in this case. The crime branch has taken over a lot of cases in the past. But the findings are not encouraging,” Mohanty said.

To ensure proper instigation of the murder case, the BJP leader demanded a CBI probe into the case.

Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Jayanarayan Mishra (BJP) said, “We are not going to accept the story of the Odisha government that the accused police ASI Gopal Das was mentally unsound. A plot was created to kill the minister.”

Mishra also questioned “why the DGP is silent on this case”.

“As per the information available with us, the minister died on the spot. What was the necessity to airlift him from Jharsuguda to Bhubaneswar. Whether the Jharsuguda hospital authority had certified that Das was fit to airlift for further treatment?,” Mishra asked.

Claiming that the Crime Branch probe “cannot reveal the truth”, he demanded a CBI investigation into the incident.

Alleging there is a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the killing of the minister, Congress spokesperson Sudarshan Das demanded a probe by a SIT under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court.

“Though 48 hours passed to the incident, no action has been taken against any official, who is responsible for it,” Das said.

“There was a total failure of intelligence. But no action was taken till now. Why is the DGP and Home Minister (Chief Minister) not speaking up,” he asked.

Alleging that a conspiracy is being made “to suppress the truth behind the crime”, the Congress leader said that the Chief Minister should leave his Home portfolio on moral ground.

Reacting to the allegations made by the Opposition, senior BJD lawmaker Debi Prasad Mishra said, “As questions will be raised if the police will investigate the case in which a cop is the accused, a crime branch probe was ordered. To ensure transparency, the government has requested the Orissa high court to monitor the investigation by a sitting/retired judge.”

On the demand for CBI and SIT probe, Mishra said, “Let’s wait till the findings of the crime branch investigation has come up.”

The minister was shot dead by police ASI Gopal Krushna Das on January 29. The police ASI fired a single round of bullet from his service revolver at the minister’s chest. The ASI was arrested and has been sent to judicial custody.

  • MP minister Narottam Mishra plays anchor role in bringing back Katni mayor to BJP

MP minister Narottam Mishra plays anchor role in bringing back Katni mayor to BJP

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: At the function where Katni’s mayor (independent) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday, senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra was seen playing the anchor’s role, which was indicative of a new task assigned to him ahead of the Assembly elections.

Sources told IANS that during the State Working Committee meeting, which concluded last week at the party’s headquarters in Bhopal, Mishra was unofficially assigned the task to bring back the rebels into the BJP. Mishra was also given the role of strengthening the BJP cadres especially in regions where the party had lost in the 2018 Assembly elections.

Katni’s mayor (Independent) Preeti Suri along with three independent municipal councillors joined the BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state BJP president V. D. Sharma on Monday. When Suri and the three councillors entered the BJP’s conference hall, they were guided by Narottam Mishra and Katni’s BJP MLA Sanjay Pathak.

The strong political friendship between Mishra and Pathak has been a matter of discussion in the state unit of the BJP, especially since the duo had played a prominent role in delivering a setback to the Congress government in March 2020. The presence of both Mishra and Pathak during the Katni mayor’s joining was a clear indication that the duo played a role in bringing back Suri to the party.

“Mishra’s presence during the independent mayor’s joining is clear evidence that he has started working on the task assigned to him. It is the first step, more such developments will happen soon. Several parties’ rebels will be joining the BJP soon,” said a source in the party.

Suri, who won the mayoral seat as an independent candidate from Katni in July last year, is an ex-BJP leader. She was suspended from the party for six years due to anti-party activities a few years back. “Even though she (Preeti Suri) was out of the BJP for the last few years, but her heart was always with the party. We welcome her rejoining the party,” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

With this, the BJP will now have 10 mayors out of the total 16 in Madhya Pradesh. In the mayoral elections held in July last year, the ruling BJP had won seven against the Congress’ five mayoral posts. One mayoral seat (Singrauli) was won by the debutant AAP.

Cyberattack may be behind power breakdown: Pak Minister

    [ad_1]

Peshawar: Pakistan’s Minister for Power Khurram Dastgir said the government is probing the massive January 22 electricity outage across the country from different angles as the possibility of a cyberattack on the system cannot be ruled out.

“An inquiry will be completed very soon. Although there are very fewer chances, a cyberattack on the national grid cannot be ruled out,” Dawn news quoted Dastgir as saying at a news conference.

The Minister said that a probe had been ordered immediately into the power breakdown, adding that a detailed report would soon be submitted to the ministry.

Last week, Dastgir had said that they have not been able to find out the reason behind the fault that caused the countrywide power breakdown, adding the federal government will also probe the possibility of “foreign intervention” into this, The News reported.

A major power breakdown caused by “frequency variation” in the transmission system, hit large areas of the country at around 7.30 in the morning on January 22.

The electricity wasn’t fully restored till late at night, bringing life to a standstill in Pakistan as several cities were left without electricity.

“There are concerns, and have to be investigated if a foreign intervention was made via hacking our power distribution system,” Dastagir had said.

The Minister said that the “possibility of foreign intervention through the internet is low”, however, the matter will be probed as there have been multiple incidents recently, The News reported.

  • Watch: Rahul Says China Holds 2000 Sq Km in Ladakh, Asks Home Minister to Attempt Jammu to Kashmir Yatra

Watch: Rahul Says China Holds 2000 Sq Km in Ladakh, Asks Home Minister to Attempt Jammu to Kashmir Yatra

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Asking Home Minister Amit Shah to opt for a Jammu to Srinagar yatra if the security situation has improved in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the Chinese sitting on Indian land must be dealt with by the centre. He was speaking to the media in Srinagar after the conclusion of the 134-day-long yatra during which he addressed 15 news conferences.

Rahul said a Ladakhi delegation clearly said that 2000 square km of the Indian Territory was taken by the Chinese.

“Government is under the impression that the Chinese have not taken any land from India. I recently met some ex-army people and even a delegation from Ladakh has clearly said that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory has been taken over by the Chinese,” Rahul said. “They also said that many patrolling points that used to be in India are now firmly in Chinese hands.”

Terming it “extremely dangerous”, Rahul said: “The approach Government is following by completely denying that the Chinese have taken our land is dangerous and it will give them more confidence to do more aggressive things. We have to deal with the Chinese firmly and tell them they are sitting on our land, won’t be tolerated.”

Asked about the situation on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir, Rahul Gandhi said he met people and is extremely unhappy.

“Target killing and bomb blasts are happening in Jammu and Kashmir and if the security situation has improved then the conversation the security personnel are having with me should not have been required,” Rahul said. “If the situation is so good why don’t the BJP people walk from Jammu to Lal Chowk? Why doesn’t Amit Shah walk from Jammu to Kashmir if the situation is so secure? I don’t think that argument holds.”

Congress has alleged a security lapse during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kashmir. Earlier on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that police arrangement “completely collapsed” during Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir and he had “to cancel” his walk.

Responding to a volley of several questions about Jammu and Kashmir, Rahul said the restoration of statehood should be the first step.

“Statehood and restoration of the democratic process is a fundamental and very important first step. The other steps will come later and I do not necessarily have to comment on it here,” he said. “All states have an assembly. The democratic process is the right of the people and it should be restored in Jammu and Kashmir. A solution should be found for the people of Ladakh as well.”

In response to a question about the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution in 2019, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress Working Committee has already made its stand clear on the issue. Notably, Article 370 granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked by the Modi government on August 5, 2019.

Odisha minister Naba Kishore Das dies of bullet injuries: Hospital officials

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das died after battling bullet injuries for several hours after being shot by a policeman, Apollo Hospital officials said.

A team of doctors operated on him after he was airlifted from Jharsugada to Bhubaneshwar, hospital officials said.

Das, who was 60-years old, was shot through the heart at Brajrajnagar town around 1 pm when the minister was on his way to attend a programme in the district.

“On operating (it) was found that a single bullet had entered and exited the body, injuring the heart and left lung, and causing massive internal bleeding and injury.

“The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care. But, despite best of efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” the hospital said in a statement.

In a statement, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who was believed close to Das, said “I am shocked and distressed over the very unfortunate demise of Minister Naba Kishore Das.”

Patnaik described Das as a “grass root person” and said he was “loved and respected by all, cutting across parties and sections of people.”

Das was shot by Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das, who is believed to be suffering from mental disorder.

In a video footage in possession of PTI, Naba Kishore Das is seen bleeding from the chest with people trying to lift the injured minister, who seemed unconscious, and place him on the front seat of a car.

Initially, he was taken to the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital, the SDPO said.

Das was airlifted to Bhubaneswar in an air ambulance and admitted to Apollo Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, Prateek Singh said a green corridor was set up in the state capital for ferrying the minister to the hospital from airport.

Tension prevailed in Brajrajnagar in the wake of the incident, with supporters of the BJD minister questioning “security lapses”.

Telangana minister KTR faces heat from NSUI leaders in Nizamabad

    [ad_1]

Nizamabad: A few leaders of the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party showed black flags and attempted to stop the convoy of Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, IT and Industries KT Rama Rao.

Minister KTR visited Nizamabad to inaugurate several developmental projects.

“Few people from NSUI showed black flags to the convey of Minister KTR. They tried to stop the convoy but we took them into custody. Around 5 to 6 people including Congress corporator Gadugu Rohit have been taken into custody,” Nizamabad Commissioner Nagaraju said.

Hitting out at the minister, Congress corporator Gadugu Rohit had warned that he and his supporters would stop KTR from entering the city.

“Tomorrow Minister KTR is visiting Nizamabad for a few inaugurations and party programs. We are questioning him, how can you come to Nizamabad? Why did you do for Nizamabad? You have not given double-bedroom houses to anyone in Nizamabad urban. You are just playing with the innocent Muslim community. Kavitha who stays here has not brought any money to the municipal corporation. If you have any shame, do not step into Nizamabad. On behalf of the Congress party, we will stop your program tomorrow by any chance. We have the people’s support for this,” Rohit said in a video released by him.

Will India welcome Pakistani artists again? Here’s what IB Minister says

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: First Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival kick-started in Mumbai recently. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur lighted the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the 1st SCO Film Festival. Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, actress Hema Malini and other prominent personalities were present during the inaugural ceremony.

During the event, Anurag Thakur also spoke about the ban on Pakistani artists. He said that not only Pakistan but other nations were also invited to the film festival. He informed that Pakistan has refrained from participating in it. “Whenever a multinational tournament has happened we have included all those countries that are a part of the world. It’s their decision to attend or avoid it. We have sent the invitation to all the members of SCO,” he was quoted saying in the ETimes report.

“If I talk about the members it’s a long list. See we have sent the invitations from our side we have opened the gates for everyone,” he further added.

When asked about revoking the ban on Pakistani artists, the Minister said, “please, for now, let us keep it to the SCO festival only.”

It is clear that Pakistan was invited to participate in the festival only. The ban on artists has not been yet revoked. It is relevant to mention here that the latest Pakistani film ”The Legend of Maula Jatt’ starring Fawad Khan, Hamza Abbasi and Mahira Khan also remained in headlines last month as makers were planning to screen the film in India. The screening of the movie was later cancelled.

Various Pakistani artists like Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mahira Khan and others have amassed a huge fan following in India. After the URI attack in 2016, Pakistani artists were banned from performing in India.
